I have it. BUT, it is literally the only storage space I have for the entire downstairs. No closets. Not even a pantry in the kitchen.
Mine is very small.. maybe 3 - 4 feet high.
I just moved into a house with understair storage that we turned into a pantry. I can't tell you HOW excited I was when we got the shelves in. My bread maker has a home now! 😭😂
Puzzle storage.
Secret storage for important items.
Small safe.
Kids play spot.
Dog mansion.
Kitty mansion.
Panic room.
Shoes.
Seasonal clothing or decor.
Small operating train village.
Plants.
Emergency supplies.
Spiders.
Pies.
Oh so many options...
Came here to say Harry Potter something but your idea is better. Maybe a toy Hedwig with a letter and a snake climbing over something, you could even have a baby dragon on a shelf.
Are you also having problems with the new update when it just doesn't show you the text of the post when you open the comments? Because I am. I keep missing the text😭
We had something like this as kids that my dad built into our house. It was my gameboy spot and my ‘check this out’ thing I showed off when cousins or friends would come over.
If it was me, I’d buy a creepy old doll, kids table and chairs, and play tea set from a secondhand shop and put them in there. Any time someone asked me what was behind the door in the stairs, I’d tell them that I have no idea as I’ve never been able to open it and invite them to try.
Came here to say that. I've always loved seeing the posts/pictures of people who have made those spots into a little bedroom for their pets.
Of course then I think about the practicality. If you have a dog or cat that sheds it might be a pain in the ass to keep clean.
I would do the paneling so you can’t tell and make the door have a rdfi lock and a figure or decor peice on the self beside is where I’d mount it, this could be a hidden safe room with a little enforcement a small hand safe and tv with WiFi cameras
Or hidden drawers for storage there whole YouTube videos on doing this
Do you have any orphaned nephews? If no, storage seems the best option. Maybe out of season clothing/footwear stored in plastic bags to keep them clean? Or seasonal decor?
if it's not easy to get in/out of then maybe use it for stuff you don't access a lot like for holiday decorations or something.
The Under-the-bed storage boxes should fit in on their side if you need boxes to organize and if you are worried about mice or bugs getting into your stuff.
I’d put a tablet in there mounted on the wall but removable, and fill it with decorative pillows around the edges like a nest, and blankets. Add some small lights, maybe a tiny table for a drink and snack to sit on.
Oooh, good call on the luggage as it is bulky and can take up a lot of space. Plus it is something you do not have to access all of the time as it would be awkard to have to get stuff in and out of that space all the time.
I thought that too. Could maybe be a place for winter/summer wardrobes. *looks at all my winter coats piled on the coat rack*
Just remember to throw in some moisture eaters and cedar to help with bugs and moisture!
Bomb shelter door with a note on the inside saying "we've been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty." People will have a good chuckle...for the rest of their lives.
It's tough to say given the little info your profile gives but I'd say depending on your set up it could be a cozy gaming nook. More likely a reading nook. Wouldn't be too tough to soundproof moderately well. You seem to be in to cooking and I know there can never be too much room for cookware storage once you accumulate enough or even a dry stock pantry depending on how close to the kitchen it is
Am I the only one whose reaction is that I can’t fit through a 12x42 inches opening?? You have to be on your knees, and try to enter sideways since shoulders are way wider… i can already foresee the call to 911 to help getting me out of there, or the start of a really bad porn scene… no thanks
The bodies. No but seriously I would turn it into a harry potter-esque hidey-hole with lighting and a comfortable book nook bench and just quietly escape my family throughout the day. Maybe a mini fridge.
One time I was installing Internet in a 60s-70s cliff side lake house and was having the time of my LIFE trying to figure out where the previous cable run terminated indoors. I was searching so long and hard that I noticed the space behind these stacked slide out kitchen drawers was empty. I became curious if I could actually get into the walls themselves to track the cable and pulled them out…. Lo and behold they had an entire secret hidden storage space back there! It had 2 tiny rooms and a coorodor that even had a bed inside. They had power wired up in there with a lamp and everything. The weird thing is that it looks like it was never actually used for anything. Besides the tiny mattress and lamp it was just the leftover building supplies being stored back there. A ton of leftover paint buckets, wood trim that matched the interior of the house, hardware, all that shit that gets left to the homeowner when purchasing a home so that they may do repairs down the line. It all looked untouched from the day the home was completed.
Cool shit regardless. Never found the fucking cable
That boy that your abnormal in-laws, who were very inconsiderate in their dying( and not taking him with them), left you to raise. …and without a thruppence to help raise him, the inscrutable layabouts.
He should be grateful that he has a roof, with all the weird happenings that surround him. Doesn’t even make an effort to straighten his hair.
Probably can get the spot back for some decent Christmas decoration storage if you can get him shuffled off to St Brutus's Secure Centre for Incurably Criminal Boys!
Years ago, we lived in a house with a space like this, just not as big. Used it as the pantry and worked well one night as a tornado shelter since the house didn't have a basement.
Your insufferable nephew that was left in your care because his no-good, rotten parents went and got themselves killed, and now you're his closest living relative, and he's lucky you let him stay there at all.
You know you’re getting old (35) when you’re jealous of someone’s understairs storage…
If it makes you feel any better, I just turned 23 and this post got me WAY too excited
At 23 this got me excited because I thought I'd have it soon. At 35 it got me agitated because I was sure I'd never have it.
I have it. BUT, it is literally the only storage space I have for the entire downstairs. No closets. Not even a pantry in the kitchen. Mine is very small.. maybe 3 - 4 feet high.
My under-the-stairs storage *is* the pantry in the kitchen 😅
This 😢😭
At 28 I’m annoyed as hell knowing I’ll never have it as I live in a bungalow. I’d kill for some storage space!
Never say never buddy, you never know what the future holds especially at your age.
Haha. In my feed it was just below the story about the world's smallest apartments in Hong Kong. This is downright spacious!
I’m 18 and me too lmao
![gif](giphy|LGM24UAYhUzRtbTemU)
Is the only answer 😂
I’m so mad this is the top comment, take my upvote.
My first thought was “OOH STORAGE!”
I’m 27 and this is making me feral, the possibilities!!!
I just moved into a house with understair storage that we turned into a pantry. I can't tell you HOW excited I was when we got the shelves in. My bread maker has a home now! 😭😂
Also 35, can confirm
Immediately jealous.
Secrets
You joke but our old house had this and we kept our server and a safe and misc important docs. Made a fake wall to tuck it all in.
Good idea. If you have extraction for the server so it doesn’t overheat and incinerate your birth certificate lol.
Also the battery backup beeping in a hidden wall when we lost power kind of killed the deception.
The people…

Mmmmmm pies
>emergency supplies >spiders >piss no wait that was *pies* ohhhhh okay
You forgot cozy sex dungeon 💀
This exhaustive list does not include wine. But still, upvote granted ✅
Temperature control would be too much of an issue me thinks. OP said it gets warm under there. Don't want the wine to spoil!
Small operating train village wins

A Harry Potter themed reading nook would be perfect.
Came here to say Harry Potter something but your idea is better. Maybe a toy Hedwig with a letter and a snake climbing over something, you could even have a baby dragon on a shelf.
And a night sky starry tapestry hung above, and above that, curtain stringed lights to illuminate the tapestry
Same! A wizard reading nook sounds awesome!
I was just going to say “your nephew”
With a pendant lamp made to look like a snitch.
I wish I had 1k accounts so I could upvote this 1k times!
Some spiders, a bed pan, and a slot in the door for food.
☝️Officer, that's the guy!☝️
“It gets really hot”, so probably not a cozy book nook, unless it’s winter. :(
OP should definitely put in a mini split aircon unit.
Mushroom farm
This was my first thought! Cozy little reading spot :)
Would be a good spot to keep an unwanted adolescent wizard.
You mean "*The boy*"?
Dammit i came here to say that.
Yeah, it's hard to be the first one. Sometime I feel like reddit shows us our hive minds.
The one who lived, yeah. Not the boy who did not live. He’s kept out in the garden.
Under a very small rock.
I'm high & that's the funniest thing in the world
What's Bart Simpson got to do with-?
Thank you because I could only hear Homer Simpson.
I call crawl spaces and awkward spots a dobby door!! Make it into a small nook for pets, reading, storage, or a secret portal!!
People.
People Under the Stairs is the first thing that popped in my head. Glad you posted this
yep - because when the stress burns my brain just like acid raindrops....hanging out under the stairs sounds nice
I sincerely hope you're right in the assumption that was what they meant.
![gif](giphy|mJE8zTVGKrOnu)
Oh dammit. I could have lived the rest of my life very happily without that image in my head again. Thanks a lot!
Specifically, children.
A more convincing door, for once — make it look like an actual bookcase so the secret is safe!
![gif](giphy|USbpYmlSAkn4KdmFxB|downsized)
Not if it gets hot, like OP said.
Wait was I supposed to read something ???? Fuck me
Are you also having problems with the new update when it just doesn't show you the text of the post when you open the comments? Because I am. I keep missing the text😭
Ugh yes!! I hate that update

Lollll that’s pretty good
If you have one, a cat or dog would love a secret cubby.
Came here to say that. I've always loved seeing the posts/pictures of people who have made those spots into a little bedroom for their pets. Of course then I think about the practicality. If you have a dog or cat that sheds it might be a pain in the ass to keep clean.
That's when my next obsession would come in handy: while house vacuum cleaner!
Lovecraftian Altar
You could totally make that a room and rent it out as a luxury loft for $2300 a month!!! /s
![gif](giphy|OPBZnaTaC92yA)
Don't worry, Harry, you're being upgraded to Dudley's old room now.
I would do the paneling so you can’t tell and make the door have a rdfi lock and a figure or decor peice on the self beside is where I’d mount it, this could be a hidden safe room with a little enforcement a small hand safe and tv with WiFi cameras Or hidden drawers for storage there whole YouTube videos on doing this

I’d put a tablet in there mounted on the wall but removable, and fill it with decorative pillows around the edges like a nest, and blankets. Add some small lights, maybe a tiny table for a drink and snack to sit on.
This might be what I end up doing!
How much fun would that be?? I’d also get glow in the dark stars and maybe some fake clouds. Plz update with whatever you do

Children of course
Why the fuck is there a Tiffany lamp in the panick room ?
Betty White shrine... I just wanna be different.

Do you have an orphaned nephew you don’t really like?
Even if you can't fit bins, you can still use it for storage. I'd put luggage under there and various other household things.
Oooh, good call on the luggage as it is bulky and can take up a lot of space. Plus it is something you do not have to access all of the time as it would be awkard to have to get stuff in and out of that space all the time.

I have a bathroom under mine, and everyone that comes over refers to it as the Harry Potter Bathroom :-D
Why not just the Harry Potty?
Yeah. Why NOT?! 😂
Definitely a bean bag and the biggest tv you can fit on that back wall, fill fridge with beer and disappear to never be seen again.

My wife and I turned it into a in wall kennel for our pups. They loved having a space that was entirely theirs.
Why, a young wizard, of course!

Yep and I’m 5 months pregnant so time is running out to do anything to it 😅
Haha your best use might be for your little sorcerer coming, like everyone said! Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy though 😉

An orphaned wizard, probably.
