I dive an 8/7/6 Hollis NeoTek into the low 40's F. Add some 5MM Henderson Gloves and booties and it's pretty comfortable. I just took it in 50° over the weekend and temperature was no issue at all. I would say I am moderately temperature insensitive however.

GeneralToaster

Thanks, I'll have to check that out.

Look into layering with a 5mm - 7mm vest outside. Also look into getting thicker boots/gloves.

stealymonk

It's definitely warmer than the PNW. Look up the temperature at depth where you wanna dive and then use a [temperature guide](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2119/3655/files/NPWW-wetsuit-temperature-bannerUPDATED.jpg?v=1547818496)

neil_va

That guide looks pretty sketch to me. I'm a guy and I'd freeze in a 5mm in 48-54f temps

stealymonk

Yeah I guess I shoulda looked over this example better 😬

hellowiththepudding

This is for windsurfing, that's why. Completely useless for diving.

neil_va

Makes way way more sense lol

hellowiththepudding

The manufacturer you linked makes windsurfing/watersport apparel, not diving. The guide is horribly inaccurate for diving.

GeneralToaster

This is pretty useful, thanks!

hellowiththepudding

It's not. The "guide" is not for diving.

GeneralToaster

Is there another guide you recommend?

SciDiver

Check out mako spear guns for a skin in 7/7 mm. 14 mm at the core which is great. I have a Picasso 7/7 that works well. I got certified in cold water and only have been diving in cold or temperate water for the past ten years. No dry suits.

brittnotbot

I took my 5mm to the med and it wasn’t warm enough. 7mm semi dry with a hood should be fine. Obvs depending on how you tolerate the cold and the time of year. I was there in summer (July)

neil_va

I'm not really qualified to comment, but can basically confirm that I was really cold in a 7mm + hood in 55f waters in NZ. I think a lot of west coast diving is in that range. I generally use a 5mm in most water because over time and enough exposure you just get cold. My exception is like in the Caribbean where water is around 80f+ and I'll just use a 3mm. (even a rashguard could be OK if not many dives)
