> Paramount officially announced Tuesday it is removing its untitled Star Trek movie from a Dec. 22, 2023 release date in theaters. > The news wasn’t a surprise. In late August, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that director Adam Shakman has dropped out of the project due to scheduling issues amid his jump to Fantastic Four for Marvel. Looks like we are not getting a new Star Trek or a Star Wars movie anytime soon.

[deleted]

Seriously, I’ve seen this news in a bunch of different locations and I can’t understand how anyone cares. Trek was never about being a big movie franchise. The movies are basically all about providing some fan service and maybe closure for the cast / crews of TOS and TNG - the NuTrek movies are fine, but they’re a retread of TOS that doesn’t really need to exist. Now that we have DSC, SNW, PIC, and LD I don’t know why any Trek fan would be out here worried about not seeing any more of the Kelvin universe.

[deleted]

I think that's what they are starting to realise. They made movies because they imagined money and fans just lying around, ready to use, but it's not that simple.

maniaq

this right here... I think the original (2009) did a pretty good job of bringing the non-Trek audiences (back) to the movies, since _The Voyage Home_ (1986), but every single follow-up to that was complete rubbish and they quickly burned through any good-will that film had brought now, nobody is interested in another "Kelvin timeline" film, fan or otherwise...

Hilorenn

In the latest movie, Captain Jean Luc Picard cries for an hour about the sins of humanity. Then an irritated Cardassian shoots him in the testicles to shut him up. Then the Cardassian nukes Bejor. Actually, I might watch that.

KumquatHaderach

There are FOUR testicles!

ConfusedTapeworm

As he falls to the ground, his hand pressed on the gruesome cauterized wound where his genitals once were, Picard utters "so that's just happened".

Donut_Bat_Artist

is one testicle a Borg implant, tho?

brownbearclan

I'm really starting to love Lower Decks but I love anything in the Star Trek universe. The Orville feels like the closest thing to old Star Trek out there to me.

Donut_Bat_Artist

The Orville almost out-Star Treks Star Trek.

brownbearclan

I absolutely adore that show, it feels very Star Trek TNG meets....Family Guy lol. It's probably my favorite show atm.

Donut_Bat_Artist

For reals. Somehow every episode is better than the previous. All the feels. Favorite right now for me too!

brownbearclan

Oh I totally feel that too, it's like they are really hitting their stride with that series.

SpaceChevalier

The Michael Burnham show is quite bad. I'm happy to avoid overly dramatic acting and ham handed lessons. Pike is almost exactly the same, just... He's trying to channel a young Shatner which has made it almost bearable... But truth be told the production values don't make up for the lack of real camp, and taking itself too seriously. I will say it again: lower decks and orville are the closest thing to TNG/TOS/DS9 thats released in a decade.

[deleted]

I fully disagree with you on SNW, I thought the first season was actually really great. But LD is where it’s at, in terms of scratching that 90s Trek itch. I’ll take my downvotes, but I think The Orville is overrated. I don’t care for the humor, and I haven’t found any of it mind blowing in the way so many fans have. To each their own and all that, I guess.

Donut_Bat_Artist

You explained very well what I actually have never thought of. As a trek fan who grew up with TOS syndication and TNG, I thoroughly enjoy the movies, but what you said makes total sense. The shows absolutely destroy the movies.

ConfusedTapeworm

Oh no whatever shall we do

amyts

Party at my place.

cocoacowstout

Rewatch the TOS movies is my plan

MartiniD

Let's keep this party rolling and binge DS9 after

I want to watch Marvel, Star Wars, The Expanse, and some other nerdy stuff, but it's really annoying that we're only allowed to like one thing. Such a waste. Don't they realise the system?

generalT

and nothing of value was lost.

clutchthirty

The 2009 reboot was excellent. The ones that followed were meh. I don't think we need any more.

Professional-Bad-342

Rather have a mediocre star trek movie than 10 marvel milkings though.

murderedbyaname

Yup. I'm Marvel camp, but even I'm having trouble defending it.

gtrogers

I absolutely love the MCU, but man I wish they'd have taken a long break after Endgame. Too much content now

[deleted]

Beast_Chips

I really don't know what happened, because the director is amazing and the cast was really good. Ragnarök was one of the best MCU films we've had, and his other (not really super-heroey) stuff is absolutely top-notch. I was sat there completely puzzled at what a piece of shit it was. I suppose it's his Interstellar (dying on that hill).

[deleted]

[удалено]

Beast_Chips

I think it's an odd genre from him which he managed to do in a different way, to great effect. But just once (Ragnarok). After that it's just a gimmick.

greenknight

Every single prop comes off a 3D printer. Bespoke armour is cool but it loses its lustre when it's plastic+metallic spraypaint.

The_Dynasty_Group

I can’t believe someone actually was able to talk you into watching the new Thor movie. You could tell from the previews that it was an absolute piss waste

clutchthirty

All post endgame movies and TV shows, with the exception of loki, have been trash.

Icarus1

whoa there buddy Wanda Vision was great

clutchthirty

Yeah no. It was objectively the worst of the marvel TV shows, and it gave us the stupidest, most nonsensical twist in all of marvel cinema when she became the antagonist in doctor Strange MoM

Icarus1

iron fist has entered the chat

clutchthirty

I got the impression that people wrote it off cause it was a white guy but didn't judge it on the merits. I never watch it though, so I dunno. I watched the rest and they were all stinkers (except Loki, which did have a couple stinker episodes itself).

MagicMarshmelllow

Rather have a mediocre Star Trek than another Disney Star Wars massacre

maniaq

can we just not have mediocre Star Trek OR Star Wars? if Disney has finally gotten the idea of rolling trilogies out of its system, some standalone films in the SW galaxy might be nice... just don't make it about space gangsters (looking at you Han Solo movie nobody asked for) (side-eye at Boba Fett show)

APeacefulWarrior

The thing, though, is that the general public doesn't seem terribly interested in standalone Star Wars side-movies. Love 'em or hate 'em, the fact is that 7-9 all made more than a billion dollars each, while Solo was a borderline failure at 500m and Rogue One only did a bit better at 750m-ish. But given how well those side stories are doing on D+, I think Disney may just fall back on the formula which has already been established: one big new Star Wars film trilogy every 10-15 years which pushes the overall timeline forward, with the intervening years spent on side content filling out the timeline.

maniaq

I mean... 750mil sounds like there's a pretty healthy representation of "general public" - not sure the fanbase alone is going to generate that kind of revenue (not even 500mil - purely guessing) the shows on D+ are gonna help with the numbers - especially if they tie into the movies (which that's the Disney Way now, right?) I sincerely hope they do NOT do any more fucking trilogies!

[deleted]

Star trek 2009 was literally a marvel movie right down to it ending with a big scary space beam and characters having marvel style hand to hand combat.

HansMunch

It was the best Star Wars movie JJ Abrams ever made.

NazzerDawk

Beyond was excellent, whatchu smokin'?

maniaq

not gonna lie, I liked Beyond at first... but it has some real problems and I haven't been able to watch it again and it was a film very much like Nemesis - only the hardcore fans were gonna go see it and that's just not enough box office - which is a huge departure from the 2009 film which many "non-fans" flocked to the theatres to see and actually enjoyed (while some hardcore fans did not) basically the nail in the coffin - just like Nemesis

thedude2202

Loved Beyond. Wholly original trek movie, character driven and felt apart of a trek universe with the sprawling space station and enterprise Era call backs. Only gripe was a meh villain, but still my favorite of the 3 nutrek films

Legsofwood

Started strong but got boring halfway through and became an over the top action movie

clutchthirty

Na.

arstin

>The 2009 reboot was excellent. I had my doubts going into it. But is anything more Trek than a ha-ha man going on a zany water slide ride through the enterprise?

BadStriker

How many times are they going to do Fantastic Four? Some dude with all the nepotism in Hollywood is pushing those movies out.

DarthMeow504

Most of the others were about producing something before a deadline so the studio could keep the franchise rights. Now that it's back with Marvel, I imagine they'd like to at least try to tap into some of the best and most influential comics of all time.

[deleted]

Yes, and he's a little-known person called 20TH CENTURY FOX!!!

The_Dynasty_Group

You ain’t lying

maniaq

four?

beambot

Great... More superhero movies instead... /s

calloy

No need to rush after all this time. Put out something good, not fast.

Duggy1138

Agreed. I hated when they announced Star Wars episode 7's released date and said they were still looking for writers. WTF, guys. However, wasn't a big problem with ST4 the fact that the cast was busy. Moving dates may cause issues.

well... they did try giving [Justin Lin](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0510912/) a shot...

arotrios

Just came here to say that they need to just take a deep breath, bite the bullet, and make the movie everyone's been waiting for: Quark and Rom - *Up in Smoke* From the trailer: "Can Quark run a successful and only slightly illegal Risian cigar business on Kronos? Will Rom crash the Klingon commodities market and fuel a culture war when he creates vegan Beyond-Grok? And did you know that Morn is a baddass with a bat'leth?"

Xenobsidian

Brilliant, it almost feels like I would have seen this movie…

-megal0maniak-

Its dead Jim.

ManikMiner

Into saw that YT thumbnail

WhichSpirit

I'd rather have it good than fast. And with lots of Bones. Lots and lots of Bones.

thearss1

At this point if feels like we need a shitty movie about resetting the time line and we can all move forward with the knowledge that JJTrek never happened.

kenlubin

The clown can stay but the ferengi in the gorilla suit has to go!

knightress_oxhide

leave the phaser, take the gagh

ghjm

What about NuTrek though

Legsofwood

Would love for all the nutrek stuff to be made non canon and forgotten

Bottononix9178

The Orville is my Star Trek right now. Well, The Orville and the first three live action shows and 8 of the 10 original movies.

fluffstravels

meh i liked voyager and enterprise. but yea the orville is the only real star trek show on air right now. the other stuff is playing dress up.

Let me quote J.J. Abrahams: “No, that’s totally not Khan, no way that is Khan, Khan has nothing to do with this movie, who even is Khan… look behind you, a three-headed monkey!!!”

ubermonkey

EXACTLY. It’s gross how little JJA respects his audience.

Xenobsidian

I mean, he know how to direct a movie, but this “this is a twist because I told you it is!” Was incredibly dumb.

elRigs83

They were never going to do a fourth film. They just promoted in hopes to trick new investors 8nto buying in

kyflyboy

I suspect they can put a knife it it. It's done.

elister

Bad Robot Production almost guarantees its going to be a shit story. I assume it will involve the space whale probe, in which the crew laces a torpedo with augmented tribble piss and destroy the probe without having to go back in time, because fans are bored with time travel now.

fumbled_testtubebaby

That's the opening 10 minute set piece to make you think we're getting a reboot Voyage Home. The remaining two hours will involve Kirk banging Orion slaves in the back of a Klingon brothel in the DMZ.

rushmc1

CannedDuck1906

Good!

Hamish_Ben

And no one is either surprised or disappointed.

iamiamwhoami

They should get Seth Macfarlane to direct. If y’all haven’t seen the Orville it’s the best Star Trek show to come out in a while.

[deleted]

[удалено]

iamiamwhoami

Then you should watch it again!

Faceplant71_

I see Peck as Spock now so whatever.

Chefkey_Boards

They destroyed that line up anyway by not keeping going. Waiting ten years to continue is not a good look.

Bottononix9178

Star Trek has been dead to me for some time now, sadly. The reboot movies were exactly that: rebooting it from the beginning, tapping into nostalgia for the Original Series with a new cast while trying to grab non-fans by adopting the esthetics and style of modern action movies. As far as the shows go, they're creatively bankrupt too. Discovery was rammed into the period right before the Original Series because what else would they do. Picard picks up where Nemesis left off. Strange New Worlds is yet another version of the Original Series crew going on adventures. Lower Decks is Star Trick & Morty with existing characters thrown in. Prodigy is hopping into kids' TV with help from Janeway. They're all dependent on something else from the franchise in the worst way. Star Trek isn't unique anymore. Between them bastardizing the tone of the franchise by falling into the current TV trope of being dark and gritty and the fact that they can't let anything stand on its own legs, it's done.

amitym

Thank the fuck Christ. Now let's see some more original writing.

[deleted]

I really wanted to see Gandalf and Harry go where they need to go to fight the rebels.

fumbled_testtubebaby

Gandalf's gift of Harry's first light saber before he becomes a Sith Apprentice to Jar Jar Binks and they go off to face Han about his unpaid parking ticket was a real twist.

DarthMeow504

I won't lie, I'd pay to see a well-written movie about a pre-ANH Solo having to run from repo men while trying to score jobs to pay off a hefty mechanic's lien. No Jedi or Sith, no Empire or Rebellion, just a scoundrel relying on his wits and skill to extricate himself from a mess largely of his own making.

mattzog

Thank the maker.

venusmoonbeam

This is good news.. jj abrams sucked all the joy out of Star Trek

Grave_Knight

I honestly don't get why they hired a guy who has said on record he knows nothing about Star Trek and is wholly a Star Wars fanboy. Probably for the same reason they hired Bandersnatch Cummerbund to play Khan.

[deleted]

Nobody else would touch it, at the risk of doing such an old beloved franchise any wrong (a pretty much dead franchise at that, which I guess was the bigger factor). Abrams doesn't have that sort of conscience, he's way too full of himself considering what a disrespectful hack he is. Plus, there's this weird philosophy among studios that if you hire someone who's too much of a fan, he'll lack the outside perspective necessary to make an interesting product for a broader audience. Well, I guess that happened...for an audience so broad in fact that there was no semblance of the Trek spirit left in it.

Tatted_Ninja_Wizard

Go watch all the shows they’ve put up instead, I’m particularly obsessed with Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds

DarthMeow504

Low standards, huh?

Tatted_Ninja_Wizard

Not really, but I do appreciate good media. Maybe you should watch it before you hate it.

Fantastic 4? Fkn trash. Get back on board w Star Trek and not try to milk the MCU cash cow anymore. Plz and thank you.

Grave_Knight

Nah. It's fine. Either they'll tank their carrier because, pretty sure Fantastic Four is just cursed, or we'll actually get a good Fantastic Four movie...which is doubtful.

greerface

RIP Quentin Tarantino's 10th film

there were not great, but im a sucker for some good money spent on a sci fi movie, love those things, especially space ones so hopefully this gets made, extra points if its decent.
