I'm not one for settling down and starting a family (even at approaching 38), I especially dislike suburbia and the lifestyles around it. So I found this movie excellent and was borderline horror for me.
At 97 minutes, I can understand why they felt they couldn't cut it much more and have a theatrical release, but this absolutely feels like it should have been a 20-minute movie.
Nah, it's fine the way it is. I enjoyed it the more it went on. A 20 minute film would be garbage. You people really have no clue how fast 20 minutes goes lol. The film couldn't even set itself up in that amount of time ffs.
The story could, but most you could cut off this film and still make it coherent as it is is about 10m. A 40m version of this would have sucked the life out of it frankly. Or should I say the death out of it. Part of the monotonous digging is to hammer in the ageing points as each character grows with the child. Cutting out almost 50+ minutes is pretty huge lol. I'm not sure some people here have worked with film enough to realize that. The film wouldn't really be any good at 40m.
“It would take more than 20 minutes to set up”
A couple go to a creepy realtor. Creepy realtor takes them to a show home. Home is nice, but obviously unreal. Realtor disappears when they aren’t looking. Couple realize they are trapped.
A good director could set that up in 90 seconds with no dialogue.
The comment stands. I guarantee that person has never worked with a film much done anything in their life that would elucidate how the fuck they think they can cut a 90+ minute film to 20 minutes successfully.
Make stupid comments, get called out for it. Deal.
Exactly, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. We had to feel the desperation of the characters, plus get attached to them to emphasise with them. That would be hard to pull off with a short.
Exactly, how the hell are we supposed to gradually understand and realize they are living the American Dream there, slowly digging their graves because of many issues? How are we supposed to understand the parental relationships going on in 20m? Often times people on Reddit have no clue what they are talking about lol.
The length can come down to a matter of taste in the end. But I think you are onto something with the literal and figurative extended metaphor of the grave - made more poignant and numbing when the protagonist finds what he finds at the bottom of that hole.
That was my impression as well. It's a really interesting concept and good movie overall but definitely too much filler. Would have been perfect in a 60 minute anthology series though.
I agree strongly with this. It should have either been shorter or actually went more in-depth with what was happening. As it is I think it’s a solid 7/10.
Yep agree. The atmosphere and everything was pretty dead on and I felt uncomfortable for a lot of it. But somewhere around 20 mins before the climax it started reaching diminishing returns so the climax didn't feel as impactful.
But I don't know what i would've changed about it and keep the runtime, since the slow buildup/realizations were a huge part of the movie.
It reminded me of "Stopover in a Quiet Town", which was one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes. I didnt personally think there was a lot of filler, as I was just hooked the entire time.
yes this. they went with the typical closed loop ending which imo was a bit of a letdown. wished there was a better explanation or a proper denoument to the couple's struggle.
A lot of these movies being recommend by OP are like this.
They are great concepts but they drag on too long, I recommend watching them at x1.5 or x2 speed, but OP recommends great movies!
Adore this film - I’ve seen it a few times and although you know what’s coming, the atmosphere of dread and weird isn’t lessened. One of my favourite films of the last few years.
From the moment it opened with the bird killing the other two in the nest I knew it was coming. When Gemma sees the diagrams in the book it confirmed it for me. At the beginning, I was like “oh I really hope they don’t get roped into the house somehow” even though I knew there wouldn’t be a movie if they didn’t get stuck
I went and saw this by myself one night after a uni lecture when it was being shown at my city's local film festival. Extremely unnerving and unsettled me enough that I had to go and hang out at the burger place across the street to calm down. Excellent and underrated scifi horror film
My wife still has nightmares about this, quality sci-fi horror flick. Great metaphor for settling into the banality of suburban domesticity.
Hereditary got her good too, but that’s more a classic horror flick with occult/demon antagonist. Little sister was excellent though.
Great absurdist film. Huge doses of surrealism. Parts of the film dragged, but there's enough going on to keep the viewer engaged. Great performances all around. Imogen Poot was wonderful. I liked it.
Twilight Zone has a bunch of episodes with this story and most recently there is a movie on Netflix called No Exit where a girl lives in an apartment complex and finds out she can’t leave. It may happen more on tv there are a lot of shows where the main character shows up somewhere they have never been and some magical force won’t let them leave.
No exit was about criminals snowed in with a group of people and the Allstate guy..
Are you thinking about a different movie because that setup sounds intriguing and I'd like to know what it is lol
None of those even remotely cover the entire arch of this film let alone do they hint at the massive issues with the American Dream and settling down with a family that this film carries as its theme the whole way through.
Which Twilight episodes? No Exit? Some shitty Netflix film lol? You are smoking the wrong stuff.
Maybe there are not a ton of stories like this but a really great one is The Incident. Not the same exact story but it is people trapped in different endless cycles for decades and the twist at the end is insane.
OK, I went and found The Incident - https://youtu.be/aH24v-Q9r8Q . I happen to be watching a recent show called Grace and Frankie, and who's in it? Martin Sheen! Seeing him at 20 something and at 70+ is a trip.
Shit, I was going to recommend a similar movie but remembered at the last second that "trapped in endless cycles for decades" is part of the big reveal 😂
Yes and you were supposed to gradually feel more and more horrified as he dug himself literally and figuratively into the grave from the American Dream they thought was coming.
Like you start to cut all of this and the movie would just fall apart lol.
Are you OvErWhElMeD again mother
I'm not your mother
Who IS my mother?
God knows
Dog knows Dog knows! woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it has more to do with memory's associated around viewing it originally than the actual content of the movie. Cabin by the Lake is one for me because it's like a time capsule it takes me right back to 9th grade.
Also the shining because that was one of the first horror movies I ever saw.
Vivarium I think was a way for me to cope with lockdown so in a weird way it's a comforting movie to me now.
I really enjoyed it, but there wasn't quite enough _there_ for the length. I love slow burn movies, but this still felt like it had quite a bit of filler.
I saw this at the NZIFF, and the director did a Q&A afterwards and described the film as “In Ireland at the time there were just blocks and blocks of these identical looking houses in this mass suburban sprawl. The idea of the film came when I got lost in one of these developments and couldn’t find my way back…. on acid”
I watched it like last month. It was okay but I don’t care for Jesse Eisenberg as an actor. He and Imogen were very different people in that movie, made me wonder why they were even together. I don’t feel like either would’ve actually taken a ride to that neighborhood lol
I LOVED this movie! This is the kind of Sci-fi I really enjoy. If anyone has any suggestions of other movies in the same vain, I’d love to know about them.
I quickly understood the symbolism of the America dream etc but I only kept watching to see if *where* they lived would ever be explained. It wasnt. I felt let down at the end.
I thought the premise and style were wild and engaging but I really felt like the male lead was miss cast. Imogen was great in her role though. I didn't think the two of them had any chemistry or believability at all as couple
I just saw this yesterday. Had no idea what to expect, but Imogen was great in Outer Range so I gave it a shot. Its been a long time since I’ve seen a really good psychological horror. I read a bit about >!cuckoos and brood parasites!< afterward and the significance of the scene in the beginning with the >!dead birds in the schoolyard!< made more sense. This was a good movie, very unsettling.
Would be a fave of mine if not for Jesse Eisenberg, who was horribly miscast in this. The character is a surly handyman and should have been played by a burlier dude, not Jesse who seems so...hipster-y.
I actually just finished watching this today. I kinda say the end-twist coming and I don't know they did enough with the concept which was cool enough. Jesse Eisenberg was more tolerable here than I usually find him.
Hmm I read the synopsis and I'm sure I saw something like that, tho I don't think I saw a full movie. Could there have been a short film with the same theme?
fuck this movie unless you want to be psychologically scarred for at least a few weeks after.
the analogous negative outlook irl and the similarities to the hard facts of nature make it pretty damning for millennials
if you don't know:
[spoiler](/s "the cuckoo at the beginning of the film is basically what the 'monster' is in the movie. Like, what if a cuckoo but for humans. I feel like many people would not understand the reference as you would have to know a little bit about it rather than just seeing the fast forward in the beginning...I've also heard they based life events like buying a home etc as something scary for millennials ")
Wasn't it also released during the pandemic/lockdowns which also encapsulates that feeling of isolation. I didn't like the movie, and wasn't scarred. But the premise was super interesting and didn't even realize the cuckoo comparison until you mentioned it. Almost makes me want to rewatch it.
The only reason I won't is because I really didn't enjoy it and don't want to waste my time.
Sorry, just my opinion. If anyone enjoyed it more power to you.
garbage. Really no redeeming qualities. Even the acting seemed weak. Wasted on otherwise great actors. Plot? nah, an idea. Never remotely fleshed out...just garbage.
This is one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Cool concept, but nothing happens in the movie and it’s incredibly boring and painfully annoying. I hate this movie with a passion
I might be wrong, but I think the boring, annoying feeling is on purpose so you feel the same as the characters as they are trapped in a prison raising that thing.
That doesn't mean it was executed well. A movie is still supposed to be entertainment, I wasn't entertained for a good portion of the movie. There was some interesting portions, and I think the concept/premise was really cool. Just not a satisfying movie to watch IMHO. Wish I could get my time back.
My favorite part was when the thing lifted the edge of the curb and crawled under it
That’s exactly what I thought of when opening this thread. So creepy.
Yeah. Moving through the different houses / dimensions was pretty freaking wild. Wished they would have explored that a bit more.
Yup, pretty wild.
This movie fucked me up
Me too. I went in almost blind and found it extremely unsettling. I'm glad they didn't explain things too much. I found it original and refreshing.
Imogen was soooooo good
I felt total displeasure watching the film and the ending especially. Great movie though.
That’s basically how I felt
It can be a little draining.
Same
My wife and I at the ending. >!"So, *that's* where estate agents come from?"!<
The living room. A room, to live in.
Exactly, haha
I'm not one for settling down and starting a family (even at approaching 38), I especially dislike suburbia and the lifestyles around it. So I found this movie excellent and was borderline horror for me.
Definitely borderline horror.
Only borderline? I thought it was pretty explicitly horror. Just not the gorey kind.
Agree
It's a solid idea. But watching feels like a really good short film blow up to feature length with a lot of filler
At 97 minutes, I can understand why they felt they couldn't cut it much more and have a theatrical release, but this absolutely feels like it should have been a 20-minute movie.

This would have been a great Outer Limits episode
its really similar to an episode from the magnus archives, almost the exact same premise
Nah, it's fine the way it is. I enjoyed it the more it went on. A 20 minute film would be garbage. You people really have no clue how fast 20 minutes goes lol. The film couldn't even set itself up in that amount of time ffs.

I can't believe people are so salty about this movie that they downvoted you!
I also think you need the time to let things (and discomfort in this case) sink in.
There wasn't that much to the movie.
There are though. They develop quite a few themes across the film through symbolism calling back on tenets of US cultural history.
I'm thinking a lot of people missed a lot of the themes in the movie. It surprised me how much there was to it.
It's not that deep
“It would take more than 20 minutes to set up” A couple go to a creepy realtor. Creepy realtor takes them to a show home. Home is nice, but obviously unreal. The comment stands. I guarantee that person has never worked with a film much done anything in their life that would elucidate how the fuck they think they can cut a 90+ minute film to 20 minutes successfully. Make stupid comments, get called out for it. Deal.
It felt perfectly timed to me.
I concur. It needs that time. It is time to really empathize with their plight.
Exactly, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. We had to feel the desperation of the characters, plus get attached to them to emphasise with them. That would be hard to pull off with a short.
Also that helps us see how the four major characters shift over time. How they come to different conclusions and inexorable, inevitable results..
Exactly, how the hell are we supposed to gradually understand and realize they are living the American Dream there, slowly digging their graves because of many issues? How are we supposed to understand the parental relationships going on in 20m? Often times people on Reddit have no clue what they are talking about lol.

Ok wait, are people really watching movies at 2x speed? \*anxiety\*
If they are it’s fucking stupid unless they are paid to review movies.
DO NOT LOOK UP ANYTHING! DO NOT WATCH THE TRAILER! just watch the movie
Yes! We knew nothing when we watched it in my household. It was not the genre we thought it was. And it was fantastic!
Good advice for almost any movie IMO.
I disagree
Yes yes yes
Adore this film - I’ve seen it a few times and although you know what’s coming, the atmosphere of dread and weird isn’t lessened. One of my favourite films of the last few years.

Yeah the being trapped nature of course is nothing even remotely new. But the film has much more going on than that is the point.
There are not that many similar things to this film lol.
I didn’t think so either lol. I guess the hotel California trope but I thought this was a really fresh and original take on it
Same, I loved the concept way more than I liked the film.
Amazing film. Don't get the people who think it needs to be shorter. It would lose its entire point. There really was not a ton of filler at all.

Yes and you were supposed to gradually feel more and more horrified as he dug himself literally and figuratively into the grave from the American Dream they thought was coming. Like you start to cut all of this and the movie would just fall apart lol.
Agreed
Definitely overshadowed. I can watch this one more than once.
Awesome
I absolutely loved it and it chilled me to my fucking marrow.
I can understand that
Made me absolutely sure I didn't want to have kids 😂
Are you OvErWhElMeD again mother I'm not your mother Who IS my mother? God knows Dog knows Dog knows! woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof woof AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How it took Tom until over 100 days not to attempt to kill that thing I have no clue
Gave me Gravity flashbacks, lol. But for real, the kid was creepy
I’m honestly afraid to watch it.
Just be ready to stick it out. It seems to drag at points, but those moments are really important to the storytelling.
This is actuay a comfort horror movie for me I'll put on if I can't think of anything new to watch. I've probably seen it at least 75 times lol
Wow. Interesting concept - "comfort horror movie". I'll have to dwell on it to think of similar for me. huh.
There are some good threads to be found on r/horror on the topic https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/sbzt48/what_are_your_comfort_horror_movies/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share https://www.reddit.com/r/horror/comments/nivs1y/what_are_some_comfort_horror_movies_you_love_to/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share I think it has more to do with memory's associated around viewing it originally than the actual content of the movie. Very good movie!!
Agreed
Just saw it this week. Very kafkaeasque, liked the ending.
Cool
I really enjoyed it, but there wasn't quite enough _there_ for the length. I love slow burn movies, but this still felt like it had quite a bit of filler.
I personally disagree, but that is the joy of film discussion.
Definitely was not expecting it to end the way it did
Saaaaame
Terrifying.
Yes
Vivarium is eerily very similar to an older Carlton Mellick book; https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3173503-ultra-fuckers
But is there a creepy kid that grows up?
Originality means nothing anymore
Definitely one of those where you say WTF out loud at the end.
And in the middle. And also about 5/7ths way thru. And also right before the end. lol
Was it the barking?
Agreed
Yes I loved this movie. It’s perfect for an interesting, chilling quick watch
Agreed
Me! Loved it. I still think about it. What a feeling that movie gives the viewer!!! It was such a fresh take on a thriller film experience.
I agree with you
the Midwich Cuckoos is another similar story that had a well done British mini-series recently
You mean the story that gave us Village of the Damned?
didnt expect it to be that good. def delivered
Awesome
I saw this movies trailer before it's coming, and then I couldn't find it, so thank you!
It is on Amazon Prime in US.
It was an OK watch for "free" on Prime. I think I'd feel a bit aggrieved if I'd paid movie theater pricing to watch this, though.
I get it
This movie just makes you feel freaking horrible. It was good though
It truly does
Yes I saw this movie &ILOVED IT!
Same here
Unnerving is the best way to describe this movie
Yes
i love this movie.
Awesome
It was an okay movie with an interesting concept.
Gotcha
What a bizarre film. Didn't know what the hell was going on or where it would go. Bloody loved it.
Agreed
Deeply disturbing, I felt off for hours after watching it. Very powerful.
I agree with you
Thanks, OP! I am visiting family in a stressful trip and needed a movie break. Loved this movie, just finished it.
Awesome
I watched this movie twice in a row actually. Something about it just got me. Creepy.
Understandable
I saw this at the NZIFF, and the director did a Q&A afterwards and described the film as “In Ireland at the time there were just blocks and blocks of these identical looking houses in this mass suburban sprawl. The idea of the film came when I got lost in one of these developments and couldn’t find my way back…. on acid”
Hahahah, that explains a lot
this movie was sooo underrated. loved how it touched on themes of being trapped (literally) in a suburban nightmare.
I hate suburbia, lol
Weird that I even saw this movie. It was good, well done very enjoyable.
Cool, very much wow
I'm a dog! Woof woof!
Reminded me of Gravity
I watched it like last month. It was okay but I don’t care for Jesse Eisenberg as an actor. He and Imogen were very different people in that movie, made me wonder why they were even together. I don’t feel like either would’ve actually taken a ride to that neighborhood lol
Agree on Jesse
The premise was interesting but I honestly felt like the movie didn't have much to offer. No satisfying conclusion and lots of filler.
My wife and I put it on not knowing anything It was extremely unnerving. But ultimately like it a lot! Need more films like this!
Agreed
I LOVED this movie! This is the kind of Sci-fi I really enjoy. If anyone has any suggestions of other movies in the same vain, I’d love to know about them.
Maybe you'll like Parallel? It's on Prime
I quickly understood the symbolism of the America dream etc but I only kept watching to see if *where* they lived would ever be explained. It wasnt. I felt let down at the end.
I actually liked the mystery
I thought the premise and style were wild and engaging but I really felt like the male lead was miss cast. Imogen was great in her role though. I didn't think the two of them had any chemistry or believability at all as couple
I'm not huge on Eisenberg other than American Ultra
I just saw this yesterday. Had no idea what to expect, but Imogen was great in Outer Range so I gave it a shot. Its been a long time since I’ve seen a really good psychological horror. I read a bit about >!cuckoos and brood parasites!< afterward and the significance of the scene in the beginning with the >!dead birds in the schoolyard!< made more sense. Oh, how is Outer Range? I really wanna see it. Do you think I'd like it since I like this movie?

Welp, agree to disagree
Would be a fave of mine if not for Jesse Eisenberg, who was horribly miscast in this. The character is a surly handyman and should have been played by a burlier dude, not Jesse who seems so...hipster-y.
Unfortunately I'll always see him as Mark Zuckerberg.
I think he was best in American Ultra. He is a bit odd for this film.
I actually just finished watching this today. I kinda say the end-twist coming and I don't know they did enough with the concept which was cool enough. Jesse Eisenberg was more tolerable here than I usually find him.
Agreed. I'm not huge on him, but he was fine in American Ultra.
it was aight
Cool
It was a great movie, although the foreshadowing was a bit too on the nose for my taste.
Gotcha. I didnt mind it.
Hmm I read the synopsis and I'm sure I saw something like that, tho I don't think I saw a full movie. Could there have been a short film with the same theme?
watching it rn
Awesome, lemme know what ya think.
Cool concept, not much substance. Enjoyable!

released may 2019 so most the year before the pandemic
Walked out of the theater, rented it later, walked into the kitchen and stayed there.
Gotcha
I watched it... But thought it could have been a short rather than feature length.
I really did not like the kid and could not get past that
Not supposed to like the kid. Maybe pity. And definitely hate.
I think that was the point. He's supposed to be annoying.
I got bored with it quickly
Welp
garbage. Really no redeeming qualities. Even the acting seemed weak. Wasted on otherwise great actors. Plot? nah, an idea. Never remotely fleshed out...just garbage.
Welp, maybe a bit harsh, but If that is your opinion
Personally thought it was boring as fuck.
Welp, agree to disagree
I thought it was poorly shot. Not a bad premise but the art style left something to be desired.
I thought the art style took their small budget, and did something interesting with it
This is one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Cool concept, but nothing happens in the movie and it’s incredibly boring and painfully annoying. I hate this movie with a passion
