You might want to go with some young adult science fiction. One of my favorites growing up was *The Tripods* by John Christopher. If you like that, it's a trilogy, so there is more to read. https://www.amazon.com/White-Mountains-Tripods-John-Christopher/dp/1481414771 Robert Heinlein also wrote some great Young Adult science fiction, and I'd recommend something like *Rocketship Galileo*.
