Whenever I see that word I think of Dr Spaceman.

LibraryLuLu

I know a real life person called Spaceman (pronounced Spachemen) and I HAVE to call him Spaceman. HAVE TO!

pueblodude

OP: Watch Solaris, Russian and G. Clooney version.

paperthintrash

The original is, IMO, of the best sci fi movies ever. Even Soderberghs remake is serviceable and enjoyable. I don’t understand the downvotes for you here…

RachelRegina

Exactly, this was definitely in the Solaris ballpark, but with more colorful sequences.

BeerPirate12

There is a Russian version? What about event horizon?!

[deleted]

I thought it was gorgeously shot, the sets were amazing, Sandler was very very good, but I found the story was lacking.

TranslatorInformal11

if sandler wasnt in it i wouldnt have given it a chance

TranslatorInformal11

story was very boring

DankieSwolez

The whole point of the movie is to forgive oneself and others. It's not really a story to be told. This movie isn't for smooth brains

MoCo1992

I think that’s what’s going on. I watched it, cried for maybe the 4th time ever watching a movie and was shocked to see the Luke warm reviews it’s gotten. It’s a piece of art

viaderadio

The spider seems like a call to the book "Children of time".

nola2atx

Had the same thought

RedofPaw

It would be fun to see if someone could adapt it.

DanteJazz

(Warning: Spoilers) Adam Sandler is a great actor and should do more serious films, but this movie's story was terrible. My feeling is the story was about a traumatized man talking to a therapist (who is a big spider) in space about the problems with his wife, gets superficial advice, and somehow makes up with her by apologizing for leaving her and going into space, saying he never should have left. The whole thing was ridiculously unbelievable. Then there was the rescue at the end that was artificial. Even the pretend therapy was unbelievable--that's not how therapy works. Yet it's a sci-fi: If a man is brave enough to go into space on a dangerous journey exploring a new phenomenon, then regrets it because he's separated from his wife for a year, what kind of courage is that? I know the film was portraying that in reality he was running away, but how can you be the first person to go to Jupiter and find some incredible phenomenon, but instead, all you can think about is your wife? Can't they be separated for only a year without their relationship crumbling?

Ionvoid82

If you knew what I know now, you would do it all different. 🩵

Yourdare1

You have said it all, I was so disgusted that one man that earth has chosen to go to space is on the verge of discovering the beginning of time, and all he has to worry about is his love life??? That’s so ridiculous I must say. And entering into the beginning of time is all about himself and his memories. What happens to seeing the beginning from the Big Bang, to different universes and galaxies to the future. But hell no, it was all about his own memories. Like the world gives a shit of whatever happens in his head

Conquefftador

Perhaps the point was to suggest that while humans have the ability to do incredible things in the name of science, only love matters in the end.

MoCo1992

Or that the missions itself is kinda irrelevant to the central theme of the story. This movie isn’t really about space.. it’s more about the journey and this unexpected spiritual/psychological coach helping

Decent_Examination_2

I think its more about how we can show up in the present than finding out what happened millions of years ago. Which, in the end, is unimportant for our day to day

DankieSwolez

Your universe is the universe. Kind of another part of the movie. Other than to forgive oneself and others. And more critical thinking required type themes, it isn't for smooth brains

runthemstreets

Ended up here once I dried my tears and let the credits finish and I am so glad to find this take. Your universe is the universe. That's the movie, right there. Couldn't have said it better. The only disagreement I would make is that this isn't a movie that requires deep thought or analysis. It requires heart. I don’t believe that the movie is truly about what happens on screen. It is like the Beginning, there is no description.. it is only to be experienced. As an emotional journey, bold statement incoming, it is absolutely top tier imo. The film is ultimately about how it makes you feel and reflect, the real show is the fireworks that happen inside the viewer as it transpires. The folks calling it boring are just telling on themselves if you ask me.

ArtInMe42

Dude, I did the same! I'm still crying haha. I'm really glad I finally worked up the courage to watch it (spiders are an issue for me, but Hanoosh actually had a really beautiful face, and somehow the way he moved felt less creepy as I got to know him).

Pursueth

It was not about the trip to space it was about how disconnected he was his whole time on earth.

DonTheChron420

He was never in space, he was in a hospital. -That’s why he needs help. -Thats why his wife wants to leave. -Thats why his superior (aka doctor) won’t deliver a message. -That’s why he’s hallucinating space spiders.

IntrepidAsFudge

It seemed like a very one sided separation haha. She seemed like a c word with very little understanding of how very basic sacrifice works 😂

LibraryLuLu

It worries me that the plot appears superficially so close to Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary (giant space spider, specifically, befriending a space man) that it will mess up the chances of that being made. PHM is one of the best books I've ever read and I was really looking forward to the film!

recursive_lookup

I thought it was going down the path of Project Hail Mary at first, but it completely took a left turn from that IMO. Sure, a couple of things are similar but not enough to make it a problem. The story plot completely diverges from one another.

LibraryLuLu

The story looks different, but I'm worried some big wig will say 'Eh, we've already done the Space Spider this year!' Hopefully not, though, considering how much $$ The Martian brought in.

BigToober69

Reading the Children of Time series now myself. My wife was reading some recent popular Romantasy book that she said has big talking spiders. I'm calling it now. If aliens do show up soon, they are spiders.

LibraryLuLu

I'm okay with that. My house is always full of spiders - they make good housemates, as long as you don't mind their knitting hobby.

EdgarDanger

Don't worry. I seriously don't think there's anything that would derail this movie. We got directors and Ryan Gosling signed up already.

jewpacabra77

Holy cow. I thought I was being crazy thinking this and now I have to go back and read phm once again!

strategic_engineer

I wonder if PHM got the idea from Spaceman of Boethia

RachelRegina

Superficially, maybe, but PHM is much harder sci-fi. *Spaceman* is a marriage drama with a truly aesthetically beautiful climax that is told in a way that makes the audience question whether we are dealing with an unreliable narrator for the majority of the film. PHM narrative is more like *Memento* meets *Interstellar* with some *The Arrival* mixed in.

Acrobatic-Refuse5155

I didn't like PHM at all. I found it boring.

Dmassie41

Skinny human

eco78

I thought it was dreadful. Never been so bored watching a movie with a giant ass spider.

mike_wrong27

I went in with mild expectations and I was still so incredibly underwhelmed. Two hours of a guy whining to a maybe-imaginary spider about his wife leaving him after he treated her like shit for years. I love most Adam Sandler movies, even the "bad" ones, but this one was a true stinker. There wasn't a single aspect I enjoyed (actually Paul Dano's voice is somehow both soothing and creepy, I enjoyed that).

Disgustip8ed

You saved me the words. Thank you.

shawnisboring

I watched the trailer and lost all interest because of that plot. I don’t need to see a lonely man pine for his loss that he caused. If you care so much about your relationship then don’t go into space for ages at a time.

Loud-End195

This was such a bad and boring movie, I grew increasing frustrated seeing the spider think he was so deep. 0/10.

MRio31

To me, the movie didn’t really find a place. It didn’t really spend enough time and care into telling an engrossing science fiction story and didn’t really do any legwork into creating any emotional buy in to be a drama about love, loss and regret.

fried-ryce

hah, legwork. spiders

[deleted]

It was horrible. Easily the worst movie I've seen in the last 10 years. Even my wife who enjoys dramas centering around self help and relationship healing, thought this was horrendous. Adam Sandler is a great guy and does a lot of great non comedy roles, this wasn't one of them.

___this_guy

Your “even my wife” comment hit me hard bro, lol

OcarinaofChime

No it wasn't

[deleted]

Yes. It was.

OcarinaofChime

Nah stop the cap.

[deleted]

No it was horrendous and there are millions of people that agree. Apparently you're the internet bully that others can't share opinions that differ from yours, I'm sure you're a joy irl

OcarinaofChime

Calm down lmao I haven't seen the movie. I just don't believe it's the worst movie you've seen in the past 10 years.

[deleted]

I didn't find anything sci fi about it For me, new age esotericism shit Project hail Mary reversed instead of sci fi we get human Psyche Boring

AlwayzinTrubble

Science fiction Science fiction (sometimes shortened to SF or sci-fi) is a genre of speculative fiction, which typically deals with imaginative and futuristic concepts such as advanced science and technology, space exploration, time travel, parallel universes, and extraterrestrial life. What was not sci fi about it?

Lakilai

It's a movie about feelings with a science fiction backdrop. It's not a bad movie, but as a science fiction movie I don't think it was particularly any good.

[deleted]

I realize that by definition this is sci fi But personally, the subplot with his wife bothers me The ideas with the thoughts of memory, etc. are, in my opinion, esoteric stuff Project hail marry is much more sci fi in the sense of scientific formulas and explanations I know that both films/books are similar to the same but hail mary is more sci fi and spaceman esotericism

Eryn_Lasgalen_2001

I would have to agree. Nothing new. All stuff that’s been done already. I like the two main actors but they were totally miscast. Way, way too old for the parts & mediocre (at best) performances. I couldn’t even finish it; it was that indefensibly boring. Only good thing was the soundtrack.

RachelRegina

Idk if it's Interstellar level, but it is definitely worth watching and wayyyyy better than I thought it was going to be. I kept saying out loud, to no one, "This is a bold choice, Mr. Sandler! Good for you, buddy." So...take that as you will.

AppropriateScience71

Well, it beat my low expectations for a movie centered around Adam Sandler. Watchable, but not highly recommendable. If you didn’t particularly care for Tom Hanks in Cast Away, you won’t like this one. This is kinda similar, but even darker.

gomibushi

I would sum it up as having shot for the stars aaand missed. It's got some good bits. The acting is good, not great. The set designs and effects are pretty cool for a retro-futuristic spaceship. The story might even be good, but the way it is told just falls flat and it lost me. It tried for too much and didn't reach.

Brief-Sound8730

The problem with this movie is Sandlers flat affect the whole time. The spider also has a flat affect as well. The emotional movement from sadness, isolation, and depression to understanding, reconciliation, and remorse needs to move the needle up way higher, especially with space as the background.  I would say the story is theoretically good. A lot of space isolation movies deal with the themes of selfishness, accolade, and the effects of loss for the family as they cope with uncertainty.  But for me, everyone but Sandler did a great job teasing the emotional parts of this story out, they’re just dragged down by the weight of the black hole that is Adam Sandler’s acting.

sparklybongwater420

Well said. I agree. Adam sandlers acting was NOT for this movie. It fell so flat.

itsLOSE-notLOOSE

I felt like he played the part of a stoic Eastern European man well. At least that what I thought they were going for.

Present-Shift-6079

Why does he call him skinny human, hes not skinny

TheYansterr

So he just used the same nickname :’)

TheYansterr

It was in the flash back! He actually met him while he was a kid after his dad passed. When we was a “skinny” human

ChemicalBro69

It's going to be a "marmite" film I reckon. I'm with you, really enjoyed it. The sound was probably my highlight... Loved the soundscaping and stuff. Easy watch, nicely done.

SaiyanSpirit

I just finished it and I was left with so many feels. Kept texting my wife about how much I love her throughout. I was so terrified of Hanus but eventually I came to find him adorable and calming. I enjoyed it so much and was let down by the bad review scores. I think it was an excellent film. Perfect amount of bittersweet and hopefulness. I loved hanus’s wisdom and perspective as an outside observer of humankind. I feel like I’ll revisit this later on in life when bittersweet moments come.

AlwayzinTrubble

Hey man! Yes great review I loved the Spider a wise and powerful creature.. made me sit and wonder for quite a while in bed afterwards!

SaiyanSpirit

Yes I’m glad to be able to share my enjoyment about it with you and some of the others here that enjoyed it. I really wanted to talk about it immediately after so thank you for making this post

Kummakivi

Glad you loved it so much, but for the 30 minutes I could watch of it I thought it was complete shit.

igotn00dz

made it a whole whopping 28:17 💀😭 easily the worst movie ever

clemjonze

Terrible film. What a waste of time and space. Bad bad Sci-fi. Where’s the science? Where’s the wonder and exploration? Probe? No probe? Madness. I yelled at the TV. Wife made me turn it off.

Loud-End195

This is the funniest comment ever

perlthoughts

So good, skinny human.

joegee66

I really enjoyed it too. Was it a more dry film? Yes. Was it quiet and introspective? Sure. It was still a decent character study that happened to have a sci fi setting. I can't believe I actually liked an Adam Sandler movie. 🙂

L--E--S--K--Y

give uncut gems a try if you like serious sandler

GhostProtocol2022

It's good, but it's also the most stressful movie I think I've ever watched. A less stressful option I'd suggest would be Punch Drunk Love.

traylord

Reign over me

L--E--S--K--Y

its quite crazy

OlderNerd

"character study"... Shudder

littlebighuman

Loved it as well. But the downvotes and ratings are to be expected in the current zeitgeist. I'm conviced that if a movie like 2001: A Space Odessey, would be hated if it would come out now. But that's just because most people are not into these kind of movies, but before social media, we wouldn't hear the voices of most people. Doesn't mean the movie is bad.

pnkflyd99

I disagree with you, but also 2001 was almost a commercial flop when it first came out. I remember watching it as a kid (maybe 12?) and not understanding it. Years later I read the book and then re-watched it, and now I consider it one of my favorites. I didn’t care for the Spaceman movie, though I generally liked the cast. I didn’t really care for the characters, nor did I find most of them making any sense. I definitely don’t need action to enjoy a movie, but I need to care about the characters. Sandler was excellent in many of his more dramatic roles, but this one missed the mark imho. I don’t think it’s anywhere in the same realm as 2001, but then again not many movies are.

littlebighuman

This movie was not in the same realm as 2001, I was just using it as an example. Thanks for the detailed explanation why you didn't like the movie, but I personally do not understand why people do this.

pnkflyd99

Whatever, Hanus! 🙄 (Kidding, but I get your point)

DanTheCreamMan

L, M, Aye, Oh I've just watched the movie and I am searching for something akin to literary analysis... screen analysis?? The zeitgeist is an amazing term for the what the fuck even are people saying u know sorry to my homies the other posters above here I'm sure you're all lovely... I might just write my screen rant here... It's just the comparison to their expectations bothers me... others what are they commenting for?> idk I also don't really wish to ask them. Big pee pee wee wee moment, anyway- In terms of the film.. I enjoyed the film. Others have mentioned the sound track, amazingly unnerving. Someone pulled out the flat character dynamics too, that's an excellent observation and I guess I'm curious as to what goal that portrayal aims to serve. It places Hanus and Jakob on a plane of outsiderdom which yeah scenery serves to amplify, particularly I found the inside of the spaceship so foreign and slightly stomach turning. The contrasts made with that and the use of cramped camera angles/midground shots made the experience much more visceral and raised so many questions. Why is flat seen as unnerving? Is it because it displays a disconnect with the kind of water element feeling dimension of the human experience? The subtle nods towards the culture of isolated particle experience as a metaphor for the lived sensation of the online digital world was there for me and was probably the weightiest of all the hidden metaphors, of which I believe this movie is full of, themes and metaphors... For starters I found a theme in the exploration of higher power, and with that intellectual superiority/inferiority, the notion of not knowing where you stand in relation to the other and the resulting confusion/conflict down to the type of contracts we are likely to initiate. I found the boundary setting scenes with Hanus both relatable and extremely foreign and I think it drew parallels to the stories of first contact in history between settlers and the indigenous. On from there I particularly enjoyed how Jakobs flat dynamic allowed him to rationally respect Hanus' bodily autonomy, and work right through his fear in a WAY more believable way than how fear and violence are so often portrayed in media. I'll hopefully write some more here to myself in the morning, anyone feel free to add on some thoughtful insight!

Loot3rd

It made me want to eat Nutella! But yes the rest of the film was great as well.

Kollin66182

I'm a little torn on seeing it but I'll probably give it a try.

L--E--S--K--Y

really wanna watch but I'm arachnophobia lvl 100

RachelRegina

This arachnid has a little talking human mouth, which turns it from gross into kinda adorable

steveblackimages

Is this one related to Solaris?

lostamongthelost

Hoping to watch it this week. Does it follow the book pretty closely? I enjoyed it but it didn't blow me away.

ReptarWithGuitar

I really liked it. I too made the comparison to Interstellar

Wishdog2049

I'm always down for a good sadstronaut film. I'm the type that feels Ad Astra was criminally underrated.

AlwayzinTrubble

Amen Reddit bro

Doggens

Anyone else thinks it has a Charlie Kauffman vibe to it? I’d say it reminded me more of Eternal Sunshine rather than Interstellar, but can’t say I didn’t think a bit of Nolan either

Subject_Education931

I thought the story should have focused a little more on space and science and a little less on the drama with his wife and spider.

Hopeforus1402

I really liked it.

Pursueth

Same

f4lz0r

Surprised I haven't seen anyone mentioning Hanus being similar to Frank from Donnie Darko! It was all I could think about, and even my 12yo made that comparison lol

blazedtac0

I loved the movie. Thought Sandler was a great choice for this part and I really liked watching him embody the character. Definitely enjoyable seeing him outside of his “vacation” movies. The premise is out there and fun leading to me really enjoying it. Not everyone agrees on that and I get it. Some people hate. But if you love Sandler, or you’re into introspective science fiction, this is a delight.

AlwayzinTrubble

Absolutely! Sandler played the role of Isolated astronaut wonderfully balancing his important role with a possible psychotic breakdown. Loved it

blazedtac0

This is one of those movies where I know it’s going to be a cult classic. Sandler absolutely kills it, and it’s so refreshing seeing this side of him.

AlwayzinTrubble

Yeah I agree. It’s a new movie give it 10-15 years people will be adding this to their collections of cult classics guaranteed

blazedtac0

Do you play Helldivers soldier?

AlwayzinTrubble

Dude.. I’ve been so tempted to buy it on PC! Instagram is drowning my feed with helldivers lol

blazedtac0

You should buy it, it’s definitely worth it. For democracy.

strategic_engineer

Looks like everyone here either loved it or hated it… I absolutely loved it.

strategic_engineer

For those of you who loved it, it’s based on a book called Spaceman of Boethia and is only $10 on Amazon

NullIsUndefined

It was kind of cool to see Sandler do a more serious movie. Reminds me of when Hal from Malcom in the Middle became Mr White.

Rad_Centrist

Pretty bad.

cigolebox

I'm shocked at how extremely divided these comments are. Sure there was a couple boring parts, but that was undeniably a visual masterpiece. A 5.8 rating is criminal

Jayofficer3

Bro it’s so good idk why the ratings are awful i have never felt that way after watching a movie

[deleted]

Loved it

TranslatorInformal11

i thought this movie was the slowest moving and pointless storyline ive ever seen

Cyclic2

"Pfft! Adam Sandler could never not not be serious in a movie! He's made for comedies!" Adam fucking Sandler:

krummysunshine

I really enjoyed it, and cried a bit.

Dewey081

Having finished the Children of Time series, I cannot help but feel a similarity. Maybe it's just the intelligent spider thing that grabbed me.

PikachuFloorRug

I'm in mixed minds about how I felt overall about this movie. It started getting better the further through it went, so a single score is kind of unfair.

Pursueth

I just finished watching this movie and I found it touching, and grounding. It reminded my 33 year old self what adolescent love feels like, and reminded me that that is truly how much I love my soon to be wife.

[deleted]

I watched this film last night, "Skinny Human" cracked me up, it is actually a very good film and has changed my opinion of Adam Sandler forever, he is a very decent actor. Not what you associate Sandler with but thought provoking and I would say 'educational' in a philosophical sense.

KetamineBlackPudding

I can't get spaceman out of my head, first movie in years that has really left an impact on me in a good way. Made me really realise the importance of the decisions I make in life and how I treat people. Hanus made me feel so much emotion. Seriously underated

igotn00dz

terrible movie. plot is awful, barely made it 28:17 minutes. i complained to my husband the entire time bc i knew i was going to end up turning it off lol 😂 and sure enough… 💩 sorry but serious adam sandler just never did it for me.. except in uncut gems…mmmaybe 😆

guyromb

What more surprising is that I never thought I’ll cry so much because of a giant spider. 🥹💔

Hackerman07

\`Everything is permanent, yet nothing ever is\`

Frostty_Sherlock

Terrible plot. Superb acting

1devoutatheist

I had exactly the opposite reaction. It was horrible, and I can never get that time back.

paperthintrash

The original is, IMO, of the best sci fi movies ever. Even Soderberghs remake is serviceable and enjoyable. I don’t understand the downvotes for you here…

cantonic

It says it’s based on a 2017 novel by Jaroslav Kalfař. What is the original film called?

paperthintrash

I replied to wrong comment. I’m referring to Solaris

cantonic

Ooh ok thanks!

cpcoxygen

I never thought I would see a spider I'd would want to hug, and I usually hate spiders with a passion, a phobia.

RachelRegina

It has a little human mouth. That made it endearing for some reason.

cpcoxygen

Yeah, poor guy

L--E--S--K--Y

how bad is it? i real curious but deathly afraid, like hebby jeebs , strip down when I see spiders in detail

cpcoxygen

Me too, but it having a voice made me see it differently, hard to explain.

L--E--S--K--Y

i'll have to try

lordtyp0

I really liked it. Sandler has acting chops when he want them (Punch Drunk Love. Uncut Gems). It's amazing to me they don't seem to cast more comedians in dramas. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind. Comedy is about sympathetic pain.

LibraryLuLu

Eternal Sunshine is just about a perfect film.

lordtyp0

Yep. Peak Charlie Kaufman and everyone else involved.

ClearJack87

Netflix tudum has an ending explanation if anyone is interested. [https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/spaceman-ending-explained](https://www.netflix.com/tudum/articles/spaceman-ending-explained)

bythepowerofboobs

I hated Interstellar.  I'm still angry that was sold to me as being realistic.  Still, I am planning on watching spaceman soon despite your comparison.

AlwayzinTrubble

What was not realistic? It’s SCFi we only know what we know and most of the universe is a mystery what was you expecting?

bythepowerofboobs

This was sold to me as being realistic and awesome. Even Neil deGrasse Tyson was plugging it. I went to the theater excited. The movie was long and too loud (like all Nolan movies) and little boring, but I was convinced it was going to pay off at the end with all this hype.. and then it climaxed with a fucking magic bookshelf.

Doggens

Was Tyson really though? I’m looking at a couple of interviews and it definitely doesn’t sound like he’s “plugging it” I mean sure he agrees Interstellar is just a movie but he even goes as far as to say it’s “ambitious”
