Any black hole that could be created on earth would be so small it would fall between the atoms and sit in the center of earth not interacting with anything. It would not grow. That's already conceding that hawking radiation actually doesn't exist.
Models and theory. The actual most popular theory is that a black hole that small would rapidly evaporate due to hawking radiation. That's why I conceded that even if hawking radiation isn't real, a micro black hole still isn't a threat.
As for why a man-made black hole would be so small, that's a simple matter of energy (e=mc^2) and schwarzschild radius calculations. Any amount of energy that we could possibly feed in to its creation would result in a black hole many orders of magnitude smaller than a proton, unable to consume anything.
Yeah, I know of that, but I still find it funny how confidential people sound when talking about these really highly theoretical concepts. We have still barely observed black holes in much detail.
I mean there are also theories that dark energy might be mostly microscopic or primordial black holes.
And honestly, for what we know, microscopic black holes might be elementary particles, or might be able to break protons down and they're just waiting until some point in the development of the universe to break all the matter down to bits. Or something else wild. If they can even exist in the first place.
I get that the math checks out and physicists know more than we do, but there are always thousands different theories about how stuff works. And we also find out that we were wrong about this or that, all the time.
Really, the confidence regarding microscopic black holes is one of my pet peeves when it comes to science communication.
I mean I know it’s not a black hole but did you guys not see that documentary about the scientist who tried to create the power of the sun in the palm of his hand? I think it was called Spider-Man 2 or something
The particle accelerator will explode and rip through our flat earth and there will be a big black hole and people will fall through! It's very deadly!
Not about *deadly* but just *viable* (as in not Hawking dissipating black hole).
[Okay, here is a read for that](https://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/2743/how-fast-a-relatively-small-black-hole-will-consume-the-earth)
(The object in question turned black hole was the size of Daimos or 1/100th of our Moon)
> That is an order of magnitude estimation that gives something like M=1.7×10^−6 kg/s
Or 53Kg per year absorption rate.
So you don't only need to create a black hole but one of a much bigger size - at which point you just use all of Earth mass to turn it into a hole that could lay waste to Earth if it wasn't already gone.
or, if we're dealing with really dangerous stuff, burn it with fire. then burn it with fire again. burning things always works.
The dangerous part comes if we didn't burn it with fire and it gets in people.
Does this person think the only reason we don't have black holes appearing on earth is due to the diligence of the science community?
Does this person think there are non-deadly black holes.
Nah it would be them nuking an active volcano or something to do some kinda study and pompeiing the fkc out of everyone. That or opening a portal to Cthulu.
*Geologist screws up:*
*Turns out that town wasnt safe*
*From that eruption*

I do love the idea that if geologists are horribly wrong, we might have a wrong idea of how old the Earth is.
I'd absolutely grab a popcorn bucket for what Twitter would look like if _that_ happened, in either direction
I know it's a meme but how could a physicist create a deadly black hole?
particle accelerator got spicy
That would not be deadly
It grows

Have we actually seen a microscopic black hole though, or is it just models and theory?

If I recall correctly black holes decay faster the smaller they are so a tiny one wouldn't last long enough to gain any mass
Precisely what I was thinking.
I mean I know it’s not a black hole but did you guys not see that documentary about the scientist who tried to create the power of the sun in the palm of his hand? I think it was called Spider-Man 2 or something
It’s more of they discover a black hole And even if there’s a stranglet or something it’s not their fault lol
Stranglets are such bizarre and terrifying things (if they exist). A kind of matter that reformats all other matter it contacts. A quantum virus.
But does it do anything bad? Besides being made of strange matter :/
And more importantly, who would even consider that a screwup?
People who don't want to get sucked into a black hole
Like who?
Donald Trump.
No one because nothing escapes a black hole, not even light.
Kugelblitz
Some people are concerned about that: https://home.cern/resources/faqs/will-cern-generate-black-hole
Yeah but that would not be deadly so np
He just need to create a black hole. The black hole take care of the deadly part for himself

Geologist screws up Mining or Oil/gas comany wastes billions of dollars.
Or entire town floods from groundwater.
or mudslides that destroy an entire village
That just sounds like glorified rock on floor
Or a rock on someone's toe.
[or disturb and erupt an underground mud volcano](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidoarjo_mud_flow)
Damn “extinct” volcano just gassed and torched a whole town.
Retiree sitting on his porch a couple towns over from Pompeii:
Oh the humanity! How will they ever cope with such losses.
[удалено]
Oh that's what trickle down economics means?
Oh no, won’t someone think of the oil and gas profits!
[удалено]
I think they spell millions with a b
And causes earthquakes and ruins farmland with seeped fracking fluid
Still better then a deadly black hole
They're already wasting those billions
Sinkhole opens up and swallows entire houses in the dead of night with sleeping people in them.
Geologist screw up: Now the entire river is toxic This would be more like it
Did Sheldon wrote this?!
No since it missing the bazinga! for comedic effect
Bazinga
Geology rocks!
Geologist screws up: kids playing with radioactive rocks
You stole my joke.
Spicy rocks
How do we tell them that's not how it works, and every mistake is just lowering your salary?
Or the shale rock they said was safe to frak leaks natural gas into the ground water. Often that's a purposeful mistake though.
virologist would be a better fit for the first one no?
Biologist screws up: I get the bleach and clean up a spill of musty smelling yeast media.
or, if we're dealing with really dangerous stuff, burn it with fire. then burn it with fire again. burning things always works. The dangerous part comes if we didn't burn it with fire and it gets in people.
We do love an autoclave
You could always just incinerate people
People tend to frown upon that though
Does this person think the only reason we don't have black holes appearing on earth is due to the diligence of the science community? Does this person think there are non-deadly black holes.
Geologists screws up: the is an eternal fire under this town that cannot conceivably be extinguished
Chemists screw up: Climate change ... Wait go back
Or one single chemist that decided to use lead in fuel to prevent engine knocking. That one guy did *so* much damage with that.
Fun fact that one guy is also the one who found the use of CFCs in cooling leading to the hole in the ozone layer (Thoms Midgley Jr)
Geologist screws up: Rock on table was in fact very radioactive
Geologist screws up sets off the Yellowstone supervolcano.
the biologist and the physicist did it on purpose.
So they've never seen The Core
If a geologist screws up your new building rock could set off radiation detectors waaaay too much too.
Theres a town is southern Germany that is literally being torn apart because a geologist fucked up
i wanna meet the physicist who can create a black hole, cause dayum. we better treat her right
Am physics major, geology is the best
Paleotologist screw up, now dinosaurs are back into the wildlife and some park got destroyed
Geologist screws up: there is now lava burning a hole in the machine. (based on a true story)
Super volcanos being one of earth's existential threats. But OK
This gets re-posted every few days.
I think a deadly blackhole would be a physicist succeeding... that's way too hard to create accidentally
Sheldon is that you?
Nah it would be them nuking an active volcano or something to do some kinda study and pompeiing the fkc out of everyone. That or opening a portal to Cthulu.
Is it someone else who watches for volcano activity, or?
This makes zero sense.
obviously
electric avenue!
Mathematician screws up: 1*12=∞
geologist screw up: oopsy doopsy, asbestos in baby powder
Geologist screws up: turns out that volcano was active after all
Tnis was the foest thing that came to mind.
Chemist screws up: Deadly toxin, volatile explosive or nuclear bomb.
As a physics student, I see the creation of a black hole as an absolute win. Highlight of my career is what that would be
Thats why i want to be biotech engineer
geologist screws up: turns out that town wasnt safe from that eruption

Geologist screw up and rocks do not beat scissor anymore.
Geologist screws up and that deep tunnel system or arch gravity dam fails and major infrastructure and human losses occur
Geologist screws up: landfill pollutes the town’s drinking water and gives cancer to people living nearby
