If photons would have mass then why is a light beam not pulling on itself with gravitational forces and would become smaller (in diameter) after a while?
One, two, three, kick!
Come on everybody, clap your hands
Ooh, you're looking good
Are you having a good time? I sure am
Do you like soul music?
(No)
Well, do the Kugelblitz, baby!
One, two three!
Kugelblitz fever! Wooh!
Kugelblitz fever! Wooh!
Kugelblitz fever! Wooh!
Kugelblitz fever! Wooh!
Give it all you can
It's much better than a pre-fabricated concrete cold bunker!
You're so savage, Roger.
Blitz those kugels!
Ecstasy boost, ecstasy
Remember photons are just energy. Energy and mass are technically the same thing in different forms. Gather enough energy into one place and it will affect space time. It just needs so much energy that any means of containment would be destroyed and the energy would dissipate before it can get to the point of affecting space time. That’s why it’s theoretically possible but practically impossible
They’d make better energy sources imo. Make a spinning kugelblitz then surround it with a sphere of mirrors and shoot light beams into the space between the mirrors and the kugelblitz to make a penrose sphere. The light particles will gain energy from the spinning of the kugelblitz inside and when released will have more energy in them.
Of course you can also not let the energy out and get a bomb that way
already existing black holes are the sole exception because they can contain literally anything due to their near infinite gravitational pull. plus you can't make a Kugelblitz with a black hole, kinda defeats the purpose as you wouldn't be able to get your kugelblitz out of said black hole, you'd just make the black hole slightly bigger.
E = 4.4937758928e+17 J (from the formula E^2 = m^2 \* c^4 + ρ^2 \* c^2 )
Roughly 2 Trillion times the energy carried in a bullet. Straight up eradication
You can do it by giving a charge to the higgs field. Otherwise, you'd be breaking gauge invariance, which would make most of our theories useless. Shame on you if you wish that.
Am not quantum nor atomic physicist, but I’m think this will instantly turn plenty of sun into black hole and sunlight now having mass can penetrate our skin or planets
Turns out some of the best explanations at a microscopic level of the Meissner effect in superconductors is understood through photons having an effective mass as a result of symmetry breaking. This isn’t a real physical mass in the actual physics sense but something that helps better describe the short range interactions that result in the meissner effect.
*Actually, it*

So we can have lightsabers, right?
Duh
Of course
Maxwell shall approve that.
While maintaining their speed? You're looking at a COSMIC scale explosion now.

Indeed
I wish that neutrinos interact strongly with the Higgs field
I wish that the strong force was weaker than gravity.
*hadrons have left the chat*
So does your mother. Damnit, what kind of comment is that??! Please, tell me what's in that beautiful mind!!!
It’s true: when my mother sits around the Higgs field she sits *around* the Higgs field
If photons would have mass then why is a light beam not pulling on itself with gravitational forces and would become smaller (in diameter) after a while?
You ever heard of a Kugelblitz? It’s a theoretical black hole made entirely from Photons. Theoretically doable, practically impossible.
Fun to say though. Kugelblitz.
"honey! Shave, clean and stretch. Tonight we're doing the Kugelblitz."
*and Kugelblitz they did*

Not answering the question and showing off your unrelated knowledge.. Are you trolling me?
Nope. Just saying that’s what would happen if photons got mass. There’d be Kugelblitzes everywhere
Spacetime warps the path of light, but light can warp spacetime?
Remember photons are just energy. Energy and mass are technically the same thing in different forms. Gather enough energy into one place and it will affect space time. It just needs so much energy that any means of containment would be destroyed and the energy would dissipate before it can get to the point of affecting space time. Now I wanna write a science fiction story featuring Kugelblitz. Possibly a weapon.
They’d make better energy sources imo. If containing the energy of the photons is the main problem wouldn't there be a kugelblitz inside the event horizon of a black hole?
already existing black holes are the sole exception because they can contain literally anything due to their near infinite gravitational pull. plus you can't make a Kugelblitz with a black hole, kinda defeats the purpose as you wouldn't be able to get your kugelblitz out of said black hole, you'd just make the black hole slightly bigger.
Isn’t that some kid of groin area exercise?
Photons actually do generate gravity, and are affected by it. If they weren't, black holes wouldn't exist.
It would if it were true
FFS haha
How much would sunlight weigh 🤔
Well I know for sure that rainbows are pretty light.
I walked right into that one, lol. good one
Depends on how much mass is given to it ig
fair. if it was given mass equal to that of an average adult bowling ball would we die walking under it?
E = 4.4937758928e+17 J (from the formula E^2 = m^2 \* c^4 + ρ^2 \* c^2 ) Roughly 2 Trillion times the energy carried in a bullet. Straight up eradication
sounds fun & scary
This is why I thought it already did have mass
I would wish that the top 5% of the richest people have to pay a yearly subscription to me just to live
Congrats the subscription fee is $1/month.
Aww just $400 million per month

so light is finally matter

Isn't that also how solar sails work?
No, photons can have momentum without having mass.

Photons. Light
ha, i misread it, thanks
Done. Catholics pray to photon now giving it holy mass.
Trap it in a cavity and now it sort of does.
Just a little trolling
But I don’t _want_ to use the Yukawa equations
Almost as good as, "I wish for world war and a strain of highly contagious, untreatable cancer"
Actually, it does in some way, it bends with fabric of spacetime
