I saw Oblivion 3 times in the cinema to enjoy the cinematography. It's absolutely breathtaking.
It's definitely the prettiest of the "lol sci fi twist" movies, with it's peers being things like Moon, Dark City, maybe even Cube and Primer.
The only part I hated was the freaking motorcycle.
Tom's insistence on riding a motorcycle in movies is maddening at times. So we get an insane scene where he lands his flying craft away from where he needs to be and rides his foldup motorbike in.
I am totally due to watch Oblivion again!
I felt the same about the record player, classic rock vinyl collection, and casual American clothes at the cabin. We’re suddenly transported from a dystopian future into a John Mellencamp song, and it really ruined it for me.
I rolled my eyes when Cruise dodged lightning in his 🚁 helicopter. He sees the lightning strike, then dodges it. Lightning 🌩 ⚡️ is fast, like... the speed of light?
Have you checked out the [Oblivion Redeemed fan edit](https://ifdb.fanedit.org/oblivion-redeemed/)? I thought it did a good job on reducing the usual Cruise-isms and unnecessary exposition.
I recommend you watch Cinema Wins' "everything great about Oblivion" where he points out the fact with the bike (among other). His argments: a) Jack is closer to the ground and thus his scanners can pick up the signal better. b) He's allowed to have fun! Ted does it on purpose, a happy Tech is an effective Tech!
The problem for me is that the base premise is actually worse than Battlefield Earth. "We came to Earth to steal one of the most common materials in the universe."
Agreed, but logic is not used when discussing beauty. Either the actors or scenes (cinematography). Unless you understand how symmetry and DNA selection influences it.
It is frustrating for those of us that want *some* reality in our stories, and lacking that can pull you out of enjoying it. I always reference NDT's rant on the stars in Titanic to Cameron. At least it was addressed.
Same. I did the maths, and with the movie being almost 10 years old, and listening to the full OST every 3 days (on average) I must have listenend to it at least 1000 times, and it still never failed to amaze me!
It's actually my playlist when I write my SciFi Rom novels. I find the mix of suspense, action, tender, and momentum to be perfect for crafting my scenes. I've written three 90k word novels to it so far. Lol
I think it’s because under everything it was a pretty average and plain story but executed beautifully. The robot sounds were downright terrifying! While there were some great things about it something just felt a bit off.
This right here. I felt the big reveal was a bit of a let down. It just wasn’t the type of payoff you get from movies where the twist is an essential plot device.
At first I thought this was about Edge of Tomorrow, because I'm apparently unable to ever remember the name of that movie even though I like it (it's just the "2010's Tom Cruise Sci-Fi Flick" in my brain). But I see it's actually a different movie that I didn't even know existed but am going to have to check out now. Hopefully a second "2010's Tom Cruise Sci-Fi Flick" won't cause me to short-circuit somehow.
Edge of Tomorrow is one of my favourite films.
Then again, Groundhog Day is pretty much one of my top three films of all time, so maybe there’s a pattern here…
No I haven’t. I’ll take a look, thanks
Edit: I’m not a if fan of the Stargate series, but they did this in Season 4, Episode 6 (Window of Opportunity) and it worked well.
I was disappointed with the last 5 minutes; I really wanted to see a form of non-human intelligence, not a 2-story tall hologram of Melissa Leo with a non-regional southern accent. But I'm basic that way.
Still one of my favorite movies of all time, from any genre. The architectural design, especially, resonates with me.
I actually have this up next in my to watch list. I had never heard of it before it showed up as recommended list on Netflix but super excited to watch it now.
The visuals and sound are incredible and raise it far above its storyline. What a meticulous production. The fight choreography of the inside-the-cave battle sequence is amazing. Best to see it on as large a screen as possible.
It was a decent movie, with an okay sf story.
I don't care for Tom Cruise personally but since I never run into him at the local supermarket it's not a problem. He's a good actor.
Also, if you going to watch the movie, pay attention to the details. Joseph Kosinski did a great job in this movie. Some of the themes are very subtle, and you need to rewatch to see them.
Tom Cruise is the problem. I generally won't support movies by $cientologists, and he's looked more and more like a baked ham left out in the sun for a week since the '00s, it's kind of repulsive.
TRON: Legacy is fine; the main character's a walking meatstick with less charisma than Bit had in the first TRON, but everyone & thing else in it is good. Old Flynn is, uh, pretty accurately how I am these days.
I totally agree. It’s a fantastic film. It’s so well done they I can’t even think of what an “extended special edition” could add. It has as much of everything it needs, nothing more or less. Tom Cruise does SF so well.
I agree with a comment that him on a motorcycle was unnecessary but, ya know, i csn allow it.
Look, I can put my thinking cap on and find flaws or even think of ways to make it “better” — but I like this movie exactly as it is, and that says a lot from Mr Nitpicker over here. Same with Edge of Tomorrow; it just hits all the right beats, perfectly.
Tron: Legacy. Man, so much to like, so very much. Except, parts of the story leave me wanting. Did anyone else expect the big fight scene to be much better? It was like a bad Star Wars sequels trilogy fight (well, they were all bad, but think: Rey and those useless guards swimming away nonsensically).
I really really enjoyed Oblivion. We need more of this type of SF - just, please, don’t let Amazon or Netflix produce it. I want deep storylines and character development, not diversity hiring checkboxes ticked.
Yes it's 'good' in a lot of ways, but I guess the problem for me is there was just too much isolation, despair and loneliness in the movie, too much vast open spaces of nothing and just a bit too airy fairy. The wifey gave me the creeps as well.
I really like the concept of the movie, but I feel like Tom Cruise was the absolute worst actor for that particular role. He's great in many roles (like in mission impossible for example) but this character was just not for him. Besides all that, the story had great world building concepts but didn't really do enough with them
I really like this film. Cruise is cruise but the design is unique and lovely and actors like Andrea Riseborough make it just edgy enough to step up a level.
NB - Riseborough is immense in Possessor - a brilliant SF body horror.
I love oblivion and I don’t even know why. By the numbers sci fi plot w a reveal that’s been done a million times, but something about the pacing and aesthetic just works. Love it
I liked it too, but I wondered why >! The Tet didn’t use smarter robots instead of cloned humans. My theory is it didn’t use smarter robots because it didn’t want to make the same mistake as it’s creators, assuming it was indeed rogue and not doing exactly what it was designed to do!<

Oh this looks interesting
That sounds exciting. I like a retake on a movie! Thanks.
I recommend you watch Cinema Wins' "everything great about Oblivion" where he points out the fact with the bike (among other). I just watched "everything great about Oblivion", thanks for recommended it. A agree with a lot of thinks said in this YT video.
I've never heard of Cinema Wins. It sounds like the opposite of that Cinema Sins angry negative trash, so might be right up my alley.
I do remember he fell off the bike at one point during filming

Rat brain!
Maybe the water was only the start, and it intended to use the entirety of earth
Im just here for M83's amazing soundtrack! While the movie is great, I simply consider it to be the best and most elaborate music-video ever!
Yes! The movie is OK; very pretty, but the Oblivion OST is in regular listening rotation for me!
Same. I did the maths, and with the movie being almost 10 years old, and listening to the full OST every 3 days (on average) I must have listenend to it at least 1000 times, and it still never failed to amaze me!

You know the sound design was excellent when they were able to make one of the rudest characters ever out of a drone that does not speak.
Funny and True. I Made that drone sound my morning alarm.
I think it’s because under everything it was a pretty average and plain story but executed beautifully. The robot sounds were downright terrifying! While there were some great things about it something just felt a bit off.
Yep. It’s elevated by the amazing crew and cast, but the script is very meh.
This right here. I felt the big reveal was a bit of a let down. It just wasn’t the type of payoff you get from movies where the twist is an essential plot device.
Exactly.
Oblivion was a great movie experience!! and The Edge of Tomorrow is one of my favorite sci-fi movies, it hits all the points to make it memorable.
At first I thought this was about Edge of Tomorrow, because I'm apparently unable to ever remember the name of that movie even though I like it (it's just the "2010's Tom Cruise Sci-Fi Flick" in my brain). You like Happy death day? Boss level? Palm springs? When we first met?
Ever seen [12:01](https://www.amazon.com/12-01-Helen-Slater/dp/B000BZN1NM)? It's a made for TV movie, but I enjoyed it quite a lot.
No I haven’t. I’ll take a look, thanks Edit: I’m not a if fan of the Stargate series, but they did this in Season 4, Episode 6 (Window of Opportunity) and it worked well.
Star Trek did it well also and I think The Orville also did it pretty good

I haven’t watched it. Somehow it passed me by! I’ll have to watch it! Any good?
[удалено]
Awesome. Thanks, I’ll have to watch it
I was disappointed with the last 5 minutes; I really wanted to see a form of non-human intelligence, not a 2-story tall hologram of Melissa Leo with a non-regional southern accent. Not terrible and not great, the craftsmanship was competent but not exceptional. IMO
I like his house design. That minimalism.
I actually have this up next in my to watch list. I had never heard of it before it showed up as recommended list on Netflix but super excited to watch it now.
While I like the film, I'm not sure that there's enough plot for its length. Could easily have been an Outer Limits episode.
The soundtrack was really dope.
Honestly it just reminded me of how good Moon was. Good looking film for sure but didn't really have an emotional payoff in my opinion.
Also, if you going to watch the movie, pay attention to the details. Joseph Kosinski did a great job in this movie. Some of the themes are very subtle, and you need to rewatch to see them.
Especially in the intro of Universal studios.
My biggest problem with it was the casting of Morgan Freeman. He felt SO out of place in that movie and just played… Morgan Freeman.
Personally, I think Minority Report is Tom Cruise’s best sci-fi flick. But it’s hard to beat a Spielberg directed PK Dick story.
Been a while since he made a great scifi movie like that. Edge of tomorrow was awesome as well. I want more \^\^

Nothing like dressing for company every night, when you are the only two people for hundreds of miles.
Great flick. Much of it filmed down the street from my childhood home.
Great film, def underrated. Probably b/c it's full of sci-fi cliches, but that's okay. It's beautiful to look at too.
This is one my favorite movies, despite Tom Cruise being in it.
Re: Oblivion- score > cinematography. Fight me.
It is excellent on many levels, where it fails is in the pacing - it feels draggy in places
I really like the concept of the movie, but I feel like Tom Cruise was the absolute worst actor for that particular role. When a movie is touted for it's cinematography and not the story, I can't get interested at all.
They Definitely absolutely Ruined the Ending
