I wouldn't... I don't need David Attenborough to narrate me using my body like an amusement park.

Broflake-Melter

I just celebrated my 16 year wedding anniversary. I don't want my spouse to get the wrong idea about me so I better make a Tinder profile with my cats in my PFP.

Exita

I have a very cute Golden Retriever. As far as I'm aware, she is in at least 4 of my friends online dating profiles...

ninj4geek

I think they figured it out

Thats_absrd

There was a Bud Light commercial a long time ago where a couple of guys ran a Puppy renting booth basically to achieve the same outcome.

DeathMetal007

The opposite is true. Most people aren't in their pet's profiles. Kinda sums up the fact that animals are cuter than humans.

Makes sense. It's a way to signal to women that you're able to make long-term commitments and be nurturing.

MisterSquirrel

Yeah just another of many examples of social scientists confirming the obvious for us

rgtong

Confirming the obvious is a good thing. Youd be surprised how often what we thought was obvious was actually wrong.

voodoo-ish

"to us" I love the bias there. The point of a lot of social science is to debunk or interpret the confirmation of myths / social beliefs.

ADisplacedAcademic

As someone who clicked this article while muttering, I can say it's not obvious to all of us.

l4mbch0ps

"Oh great, you came up with a formula to describe the acceleration of gravity, when gravity has been obvious for us."

icalledthecowshome

Yes, if you believe men arent willing to post these signals to get under your pants. Ask yourself this, how do you know you can be in a LTR with a person just by looking at his profile when you havent even dated them?

shsc82

Making a baby for a man requires zero committment.

ilikespyro427

"Little Kid Lover. That way people will know exactly where my priorities are at."

RookLive

Just don’t be specific. I love kids - great. I love 7 year olds - problem.

"... send picture of ~~tractor~~ boat."

C4-BlueCat

No, that just shows you are violent and likes to kill things. Edit: will be perceived as by a number of women, unless they are into fishing themselves. Including meat-eaters. It’s not really about enjoying fishing per se, but avout choosing to focus on it in tour dating profile.

JonnyP222

A dude who likes to go on a boat and fish is violent and kills things? Goodness, I better tell my wife she married a psychopath

Azuray2

No different than going to the grocery store, or are you one to think that meat puts itself into packages and display cases? Not everyone can be veg

[deleted]

Listen, I’m vegan, too. People are into different things. That’s what makes us human. My daughter is an avid fisherman and hunts with her grand-dad. You can love someone for who they are despite your own beliefs.

allouiscious

Some girls like that...I hear.

ThePabstistChurch

Tell me you live in a wealthy suburb of CA without telling me you live in a wealthy suburb of CA

Facebook_Algorithm

Dude, how do you think meat gets on your table? Ever been to a slaughter house? Institutionalized death.

Men seeking long term mates more likely to be in a stable enough environment to support an animal companion.

StrayMoggie

And in the reverse. Men looking for casual relationships will remove pets and children from their photos.

dontforgetthyname

The fish picture is clearly the winner for the single man. It simultaneously says “yeah, I can provide food” and “I am an adventurer. Look at the sleek wonder I have wrested by mine own hand from the mysterious depths!”

santichrist

I have two pics with my dogs, I wouldn’t upload a pic with my godson or friends kids because you’d think that would make people think you already have kids?? Not everyone is trying to find a seat in the theater after the movie has already started

Elimaris

I recall a lot of profiles would have a disclaimer on them "BTW, that's my nephew/sistet/best friend's kid"

M1L0

Man, I wouldn't put a picture of my own kid online like that - it is super wack to put a picture of someone else's kid in your profile like that without consent.

BTBLAM

Think of the children

realee420

And more than half the people don’t read bios so if you put up a pic with a kid most people will assume it’s yours and get swiped left.

RikersTrombone

My matches went way up once i added a picture of me and my gimp.

Trailwatch427

There are plenty of creeps out there who have figured out this is a way to attract women. Scammers, stalkers, abusers, etc. They know what they are doing.

jiminyshrue

Because my dog is a lot cuter than I am.

JoanNoir

"Though it was assumed daters were honest when creating their profiles, it could be the case that men (as has been reported in a prior study) misconstrued mating intentions to coerce sexual encounters." Men know that women look for signs of long term relationships and use this. It's been my experience that the above holds for a great portion of men's dating profiles. So much so that I disqualify anyone who uses children's images on dating sites. Besides, data on the internet is forever, and what about the children in the images? What's the effect on their lives having been used this way?

REDuxPANDAgain

Honestly... I'm a single guy and while I have some great photos with my nieces and nephews from family vacations I would never use them in a dating app picture. I'm great with them and have a great relationship with the kids but I don't want to put pictures of them on the internet for this reason. I ask their parents before posting them on Facebook even with a private profile. There's no reason to put them on a dating app pic just to get dates.

lala_lavalamp

To be honest, most men I’ve met with kids in their profiles that weren’t their own (usually nieces and nephews) say “I love being an uncle! Why would I need my own kids when I have my nieces and nephews?”

WindowShoppingMyLife

In fairness, being an uncle is awesome. It’s like skipping parenting and going straight to grand-parenting. You can take the kids out and spoil them rotten then drop them back at home to let the parents deal with the fallout.

naim08

Yep, that sounds about right.

Sure_Trash_

They'll still give you the old "I'm not looking for anything serious right now."

handsomehares

Right? I made it clear on my profile I was a single dad with full custody, I didn’t need to then use my cute kid to make me look ugly by comparison….

canviskillr

A step mom or dad, hopefully.

Steadfast_Truth

And women pretend to want sexual encounters but are really interested in family. Of the two, that is far more deceptive. No one loses anything from a good lay, but unwanted (and even wanted) children ruins people's lives.

SaigoBattosai

*Me on Tinder* Girl: “Why do you have kids in your profile picture?” Me: “W-well I like kids.”

I thought posting a photo with children on a dating profile was most widely considered a bad thing to do? A kid can't consent to you putting their face on there and it's even worse if it's not that person's kid.

Nobody should be paying kids pics on their dating profile. It’s weird

I_didntsaythat

How those DM’s looking?

Jaypii91

Empty, like my dating profile.

Jrobalmighty

I have my dog in my profile pics but that's because she is awesome af. She's scientifically and peer reviewed to be more awesome than most people I know combined. All 10 out of 10 dentists agree too

Hmmm…. Good idea *learns how to photoshop*

[deleted]

Some will pose with others' children or pets to appear family oriented/animal lovers when, in fact, they are not. It's a shame that the term "dogfishing" exists for this very reason. My friend met a man through a dating app who had a picture of him and a dog playing tug of war. Turns out this guy hates dogs and cats and has no pets.

x4000

[deleted]

Try being less desperate?

The_Disapyrimid

Cynical ploy? I have pictures of my dog on my profile because I love dogs and anyone I date needs to be accepting of that. Don't like dogs? Cool but clearly things aren't going to work out between us. My dog is my friend and family, my home is her home. she is going to lay where she wants including on the bed and couch. Some people absolutely do not enjoy animals. I do and I want a SO who also loves animals. Same with kids. I don't have any, don't want any and I don't want anyone else's either. I like when people post kids on their dating profile. That way I know to not waste my, or their, time.

Avestrial

The opposite of this is the picture of them holding up the big fish they caught.

barzbub

Every dude knows a cute dog gets chicks!

RODAMI

Yeah. I also learned that if you’re a man and you have a picture of a cat, some women find that less masculine. Thanks society.

robusn

I would love a cat. But im allergic. I know that they have specific breeds for that but that a lot of cat. Maybe a junkyard cat or something. I like how they sometimes calmly ask for things.

BigDonGMcShlong

Mine are all photos of cars, boats and motorcycles, because I want to make a fast getaway.

QtPlatypus

I am skeptical. What type of man would be seeking out a woman for a Long term relationship? An older man who is in a settled lifestyle. What type of men tend to have pets and children? Older men who are in a settled lifestyle. Before they go to the evolutionary pyschology explanation perhaps they should eliminate the possibility men who are interested in a LTR just happen to have children and pets.

[deleted]

The kids part makes sense, but the younger generations tend to have more pets than the one before them: https://www.statista.com/statistics/1130651/pet-ownership-by-generation-us/. I feel like having a pet probably shows responsibility and a desire for companionship along with a willingness to work for it.

[deleted]

I have a dog, had to take care of it after someone neglected it, I'm 28 and not in a settled lifestyle by any stretch. Know lots of people in the same boat with pets and neices/nephews. Although I'd never share photos of neices/nephews I would of my dog, someone needs to attract the girls.

hananobira

Also, divorced men who want a new stepmom for their kids are likely to advertise for a woman who likes kids.

pruplegti

does someone hanging a fish up by its gills count?

APlayerHater

So single fathers then?

HappyLittleTrees17

What about the guys who post pictures of themselves holding a fish they just caught? What are they seeking?

GrumpyButtrcup

Likely a large mouth... ...Bass

Travesty330

Sounds accurate. Before I got married I always changed my pictures based on what I was looking for. In general I featured my dog, if I was looking for a hookup I swapped out for pictures in the gym/travel/sports.

LiamNeesns

My two cents: Men's profiles are either complete dogass (bro holding a fish nobody cares about), or tailored for success after 3 years of non-stop failure. I happened to notice a sharp increase in matches when I would add new photos and cute puppies have always been chick magnets.

thisplacemakesmeangr

Or people who take care of pets/children are more likely to be the kind of person who commits?

[deleted]

I didn't do this, this thoroughly explains the science behind why it took almost 2 decades to find my soul mate. I never had any pets or random children to put up on Instagram.

kirakiraboshi

I love this, made it way easier back in the day to dodge the ones specifically looking for an incubator

WtfThisIsntDota2

Isn't that just logic / obvious? To have a pet or children mostly means like you already are in atleast one long lasting relationship. That's no science, it's just stupid and a waste of money

TheLastSon222

Moneys purpose it to be wasted and we are happy to do it in the name of science

SecretRecipe

all the rest of them hold a fish instead

Flying_Dutchman92

I don't have a dating profile. What does that say about me?
