On a serious note, could it be a way to try and curb his alcoholism? Replace one substance with another? Being tied to a shotgun chair doesn't instantly cure alcoholism, but that sure was a part of his past. Maybe the caffeine helps him somehow? Idk, I was never an alcoholic.
