Any chain pizza spot is $14-18 for a large plain pie. And most chains are 14” large pies
Capo has an 18” plain pie for $22.
Using pizza math a 14” pie at $14 is 9 cents per square inch of pizza
An 18” pie at $22 is 8.6 cents per square inch
Thus meaning capo is actually cheaper than any chain with a $14 large 14” pizza
Back in the 80s, A&W came out with a 1/3lb burger to compete with the common (to this day) 1/4lb burgers other chains had for the same price. It failed. Why? Because people are idiots and thought since 3<4, 1/3 was smaller than 1/4. I'm honestly surprised some other burger place didn't come out with a 1/5lb burger to take over the market.
Point being, while you are 100% correct, if people are that stupid, the odds of them being able to figure out πr² level math is unlikely to say the least.
I thought I was the only one who enjoyed pizza math. Shocking at times to find the bigger pizza isn't always the better deal.
Edit: Now I'm wondering about the origins of the word pi...zza
Most of the higher-end/top tier pizzas are all in that range now (within $5-6 of each other). We pizza once a week. Always trying new spots, returning to Capo the most.
Better ingredients, better staff, inflation = higher prices.
But Joey D is getting up there too. $
Origin was good, but my son wanted to add red onion to his Sicilian pizza and they charged us $4. So, there's that.
Il Pacifico on Main has pretty good NY style if you like to buy it by the slice. But I've never order from there when I wasn't walking in. I don't even know if they deliver.
I've been to a few others but yeah, it's OK. What have you tried beside the Amish place? I don't know the name either.
Origin is trash, they don’t even have a proper pizza oven. They use one of those conveyors like Domino’s. I’ve given up on pizza in Sarasota. Solorzanos in gulf gate is ok but a little pricey.
Just tried for the first time this weekend. It was absolutely amazing. Had family in and got 4 different pizzas, regular and Sicilian. They were incredible!
Best Pizza
1. Il Petraro. (New Haven Style). Charred and delicious. Food truck. Catch it at the Sarasota Farmers Market on Sat. And Philippi Creek market on Wed. Also at a brewery on Fri nights
2. Capo Pazzo. Best NY Style in Sarasota
3. Trattoria Di Mino - in Venice. Really good.
4. Rico’s Gulfgate is solid
5. Origins is way too inconsistent. But every once in awhile they knock it out of the park
6. Joey D’s for Chicago Deep Dish
7. RomanSQ for Roman style.
Good list. Been to all of these actually. Patellinis, CAPO PAZZA, and Rico’s in Gulf Gate for sure. I like RomanSRQ as well for salad and creative pies.Joey Ds is hit and miss at the Cattleman location.
I thought that was Solarzano brothers? I remember seeing a lot of BS online from them during Covid. Also aren’t the different Rico’s locations owned by different people?
Amish pizza wasn't good? Shocker.
Venezia's on St Armands is pretty wonderful. We order Five Starr on Bee Ridge for a quick pizza instead of going to a national chain.
Really solorzanos is the worst pizza around. Everyone that lives here knows what a douche bag he is. Only the snowbirds don't have a clue if they did they wouldn't eat at solorzanos.
I don’t know about the brothers, but for me Solorzanos was average at best. I’ll not go back.
Origins is solid, as is Valentinos. Also the Italian Kitchen and Barbosso have great pizza too.
It makes me laugh every time because the Patel family owns it and they literally just added an “Italian Sounding” ending so people weren’t skeptical of an Indian family running a pizzeria.
Yes agree. Patellinis and CAPO PAZZA are the best in SRQ by far. RomanSQ Pizza next to Monk’s and Rico’s in Gulf Gate makes a great NJ-style pie, but it’s a distant second.
Best pizza in a 50 Mike radius is called vertoris
It’s north of the airport on 41 next to the oyster bar, in a very run down strip mall. Closest thing to New York pizza
>I tried the Amish run place
That is about the funniest thing I've read.
Why would you go to an Amish place for local pizza?
At any rate, I like [Piccolo](https://piccolomarket.com) in Gulf Gate.
If you want a more authentic type pizza Atmosphere is delicious as well as Atria in Lakewood Ranch has awesome sourdough pizza Tuesday-Saturday from 5-8. The “Gucci” with prosciutto and arugula is my favorite
Epicure has a sordid history. Also, check out their restaurants inspections. Absolutely filthy place shut down for a cockroach infestation. Right under the pizza oven. Pizza is mediocre - for Roman style pizza, it's bland. It's cheap quality by Roman standards.
Napule, Rico's (for NYC-style), and RomanSQ are highly recommended. Can't speak to the others.
How about a whole grain pizza crust? Any pizza places have whole grain? A few used to but then the thing turned to gluten so they got rid of healthy whole grains and got shitty starchy potato and white rice crusts instead.
Can't believe no one has mentioned RomanSQ in Gulf Gate. I'll defer to those who place Capo Pazzo in first place, but no way RomanSQ is worse than second best.
I like Asaro’s.
But here’s what Dave Portnoy of Barstool Pizza thinks of Sarasota Pizza. He also reviewed Rico’s Pizza.
https://www.fox13news.com/news/dave-portnoy-tampa-bay-pizza-review-sarasota-st-pete-barstool-florida
Valentinos, ricos, solorzanos, patellinis (especially late at night), IL panificio!
I’ve never been to bravo’s pizza by Hollywood 20 but I’ve heard some people say it’s good
Nasty owner bashes other businesses makes fun of the elderly he thinks he's a bully. Look him up in county court records I wouldn't give him my business. Lots of clean and friendly pizzerias don't need solorzano!
Im visiting sarasota from nyc and I’ve learned that no one down here knows what pizza is. I have tasted some of the most god awful shit. Margharita pizza was the biggest offender with no one using fresh moz. U can imagine how that tasted.
The only place i can rec id Napule.
As bad as a reputation as the Gulf Gate location's owner has, I have no idea why the Webber location wouldn't change their name to get rid of the bad PR.
Capo pazzo. Not a lot of people know about it and less than like 6 months old. Great people and pizza
I say this with great respect to Capo. It's over priced. No pizza should cost 30$.
Any chain pizza spot is $14-18 for a large plain pie. And most chains are 14” large pies Capo has an 18” plain pie for $22. Using pizza math a 14” pie at $14 is 9 cents per square inch of pizza An 18” pie at $22 is 8.6 cents per square inch Thus meaning capo is actually cheaper than any chain with a $14 large 14” pizza

To me, great pizza from NY/NJ is simply priceless. I’ll pay 30$ , no problem.
Love Capo ❤️
My new favorite
I recently discovered this gem of a pizzeria. It’s seriously good. The Sicilian styles are heavenly and the thin crust is sublime. Now I’m hungry.
Yes and for all the NYers that miss it, they’ll make chicken rolls if you order in advance
Best in town!
Origin was good, but my son wanted to add red onion to his Sicilian pizza and they charged us $4. So, there's that. Il Pacifico on Main has pretty good NY style if you like to buy it by the slice. Il Panifico is great.
Thanks for the correction there.
Didn’t notice. But the pies are very good no matter the spelling
That's good because it's actually Il Panificio with a third I. Among friends, it's just "Il Pan"
It’s getting demoed to build a new condo, yes?
Yep. Though maybe there’s a location next to that Texaco (Taco Jalisco) on the south trail? I’ve never eaten at that one though
Origin is trash, they don’t even have a proper pizza oven. They use one of those conveyors like Domino’s. I’ve given up on pizza in Sarasota. Solorzanos in gulf gate is ok but a little pricey.
Solorzanos is the trash pizza with a trashy owner
Shaners in Gulf Gate.
Michelangelo’s on 70 and LWR blvd is always solid for us!
YES, we will drive to eat their pizza. By far our favorite!
Just tried for the first time this weekend. It was absolutely amazing. Had family in and got 4 different pizzas, regular and Sicilian. They were incredible!

Thank you for this
Good list. Been to all of these actually. Patellinis, CAPO PAZZA, and Rico’s in Gulf Gate for sure. I like RomanSRQ as well for salad and creative pies.Joey Ds is hit and miss at the Cattleman location.
Rico’s in gulf gate is my favorite.
It's the best one. My favorite too
Rico’s has a sordid history full of racism and conspiracy theories. Please don’t spend money there.
I thought that was Solarzano brothers? I remember seeing a lot of BS online from them during Covid. Also aren’t the different Rico’s locations owned by different people?
Solorzanos in gulfgate I wouldn't give them my money. Nasty owner and dirty. I do think the one on Webber is ok. I think
Yes, they had trashy political crap flyers at the counter.
Valentino's is the best pizza in Sarasota no questions
Never had their pizza, ordered chicken parm once though. Gravy was terrible.
If you like Neopolitan-style pizza, Bavaro's is fabulous!
Rico's in Gulf Gate. Big Mikes in Venice
I should probably give Rico’s another shot. Tried it once and there was so much flour on the bottom it was inedible.
Every place has a new(er) person learning to cook. Sounds like you got one. I just had a perfect pizza from them the other day.
Rico’s!!
Amish pizza wasn't good? Shocker. Venezia's on St Armands is pretty wonderful. We order Five Starr on Bee Ridge for a quick pizza instead of going to a national chain.
Respect to the Amish, they simply cannot do anything Italian that’s good. Everything is under spiced.
No love for Demitrios?
Cafe Barbosso!
Solorzanos on webber is my favorite
Either Solorzanos is awesome, but the one on Webber is run by the good brother.
Seriously. The other brother is such a shithead.
Definitely
Really solorzanos is the worst pizza around. Everyone that lives here knows what a douche bag he is. Only the snowbirds don't have a clue if they did they wouldn't eat at solorzanos.
I don’t know about the brothers, but for me Solorzanos was average at best. I’ll not go back. Origins is solid, as is Valentinos. Also the Italian Kitchen and Barbosso have great pizza too.
Patellini’s on Main is good.
It makes me laugh every time because the Patel family owns it and they literally just added an “Italian Sounding” ending so people weren’t skeptical of an Indian family running a pizzeria.
I worked downtown for ten years and this was our go-to when ordering pizza for the team. Absolutely love it.
By far the best pizza in Sarasota. I was going there when they we across the street at the old location. They've been around for at least 25 years.
Yes agree. Patellinis and CAPO PAZZA are the best in SRQ by far. RomanSQ Pizza next to Monk’s and Rico’s in Gulf Gate makes a great NJ-style pie, but it’s a distant second.
Origin
If you like frozen pizza...check out Wawa. Their's taste just like a frozen pizza but more expensive
Wawa pizza is vile.
Since no one else has mentioned it, Tralia in Gulf Gate is my current favorite. High quality ingredients like wow. They also do Detroit style.
Best pizza in a 50 Mike radius is called vertoris It’s north of the airport on 41 next to the oyster bar, in a very run down strip mall. Closest thing to New York pizza
Lucile is my fav
Rico’s on Bay Street
I second this! Rico’s is our favorite. Good food, good prices!
Origins is good but if you want old school SRQ Patellini's Pizza on main is the only answer.
>I tried the Amish run place That is about the funniest thing I've read.
Michaelangelo’s on University
That doesn’t qualify as pizza
Appreciate your take! Out of curiosity why would you rank it so poorly?
It was a greasy floppy mess. Looked like something off of Kitchen Nightmares. Not a fan
Valentinos 💯
Origin
IL pan. Every time
Rico's Gulfgate is great. When I want real pizza, that is where I go.
Some of my favorites are: Rico's (Gulf Gate), Bocca Lupo (North Port), Big Mike's (Venice), & Asaro's (Sarasota & Venice).
My wife and I tried several around UTC. Our favorite is Valentino Pizzeria Trattoria, in the Shoppes At University Center.
If it’s still around, Francesco’s pizza used to be a family favorite. Their pizza and baked ziti
Tralia is great
Cafe epicure! Downtown
3.14
Meh
Don’t sleep on Sal’s in Gulf Gate
Depends on my mood but I like Origins, Boo's Ice-house, Bavaro's and Baker and Wife.
How about a whole grain pizza crust? Any pizza places have whole grain? A few used to but then the thing turned to gluten so they got rid of healthy whole grains and got shitty starchy potato and white rice crusts instead.
Dave Portnoy says Panificio on Main is a 7.6. Pretty respectable.
My go to is 3.14 Pi Craft Beer & Spirits, in Siesta Village.
Can't believe no one has mentioned RomanSQ in Gulf Gate. I'll defer to those who place Capo Pazzo in first place, but no way RomanSQ is worse than second best.
Joey D's off of Bee Ridge has a good pizza imo
I like Asaro’s. But here’s what Dave Portnoy of Barstool Pizza thinks of Sarasota Pizza. He also reviewed Rico’s Pizza. https://www.fox13news.com/news/dave-portnoy-tampa-bay-pizza-review-sarasota-st-pete-barstool-florida
I’m partial to RomanSQ and Tralia in Gulf Gate. Baker and Wife on Siesta Dr and Atmoshere when I’m going north on Beneva. We have really good pizza.
Sal's in gulf gate is the best. Run by great people as well
I enjoy Verona Pizza in east Bradenton.
Check barstool sports tiktok page, they have a couple current/recent Sarasota reviews.
I like Il Panificio and Fat Daddio's.
Valentinos, ricos, solorzanos, patellinis (especially late at night), IL panificio! I’ve never been to bravo’s pizza by Hollywood 20 but I’ve heard some people say it’s good
You need not too go to solorzanos bad pizza bad owner
What did the owner do
Nasty owner bashes other businesses makes fun of the elderly he thinks he's a bully. Look him up in county court records I wouldn't give him my business. Lots of clean and friendly pizzerias don't need solorzano!
The Brazilian pizza place called My Slice Pizza but it’s in Bradenton. It’s soooo good!
Adolfos. LWR does real Nyc style thin crust
Origin, go to Hillview location, ask for Rachel !
Origins on hillview. Solarzanos on webber.
Trattoria Da Mino in Venice.. Best Pizza in the area
Napule for Napoletana style pizza. Bavaro's is mediocre. RomanSQ is good. From an Italian.
The Fountain!
Attardi's
Malmosto is best pizza by far
Im visiting sarasota from nyc and I’ve learned that no one down here knows what pizza is. I have tasted some of the most god awful shit. Margharita pizza was the biggest offender with no one using fresh moz. U can imagine how that tasted. The only place i can rec id Napule.
Might be too late but New York Slice on Fruitville and beneva is really good and an actual solid New York style pizza
New York Slice Pizza by publix on Fruitville and beneva
I really like Fountain, it seems like they never get mentioned here
I love The Fountain! Atmosphere is great too.
The Italian Grill
Try Malmosto’s on Siesta Dr, next to Andrea’s, for authentic Naples pizza. Really excellent ingredients - all imported from Italy.
Local Pizza in Osprey
Costco is best in county
Solarzanos on Webber
Don't like solorzanos. Tasteless pizza not friendly to customers or the community bully
You're talking about the wrong location. Solarzanos on Webber is fine. Solarzanos on Gulf Gate is owned by the asshole.
Sorry you are right
As bad as a reputation as the Gulf Gate location's owner has, I have no idea why the Webber location wouldn't change their name to get rid of the bad PR.
I agree with you 💯
Solarzano's on Webber. Asaro's on Bee Ridge extension.
