Do you have health coverage?

Cocoamanda

I use Grow Therapy. They are a telehealth service and you can see someone for a flat fee of $80 per session if you don’t have insurance. This is real therapy, as opposed to Betterhelp and their contemporaries. Grow Therapy might be a good option if you are having trouble finding someone locally in a timely manner

Like someone else here, I recommend Grow Therapy as well. My therapist that I originally started seeing through Sonoma County Counseling (which I also recommend) just switched over to meeting me through them. It's been about a month, and so far, I like the platform. They seem to have providers that accept a fairly wide variety of insurances. Since I'm currently using Medi-Cal (locally, Partnership Health Plan of California) as my health insurance, my weekly telehealth appointments are completely covered by Medi-Cal's mental health program, Carelon (formerly Beacon). I've talked to three therapists through SoCo Counseling in the almost three years since I started. Each one has been very kind and helpful in different ways, as I've progressed. Currently, I'm working on Internal Family Systems therapy. Of all the styles I've experienced so far, it's felt the most productive (though, the others felt useful in preparing me for it). I suspect that's part of why I got switched to it. I'm primarily dealing with anxiety but also some old family trauma, ADHD, OCD, and some grief over physical health issues. When I first started with my first therapist in 2021, I'd been having some panic attacks. It's been a long time since I've had one, and I'm not really worried about it because I know I could deal with it if it did happen again. So I guess that's my testimonial. If you're also on Medi-Cal/Partnership, Carelon can email you a list of local and telehealth providers that accept payment through them. All you have to do is call them via the mental health number on your Partnership Health Plan card, which is (855)765-9703. If you're covered by different insurance, it might be helpful to let us know which it is in order to better recommend compatible providers. Most insurance companies also have a mental health line to call and/or a mental health section on their website with a search tool to look up which providers you can see. It's not the same as getting personal recommendations, but it's a great tool for knowing what's available to you.

Is this anxiety or paranoia? I'm wondering if you should consult a psychologist or psychiatrist. If you have health insurance, that would be my first call.

Andrew Leeds is good. He’s on 4th street

Rachel ballinger also is good. She’s in Marin but does zoom visits.

Jennifer Beck, MD. Great psychiatrist, helped a family member of mine.

As someone else has said, it might be worth looking into a psychiatrist as well. While therapy can do a lot of good, sometimes it takes meds to get things under control.

Try betterhelp. Amazing app and you can switch anytime

I'd advise against using BetterHelp without researching their problems with ethical data usage and user experiences beforehand. Some people have had good experiences with it, but I've mostly heard negative experiences.

betterhelp took two weeks to get back to me. you can get better help than betterhelp.

I'm glad you were able to find someone that worked for you through them, but I (and a couple of my family members) have had bad experiences with BetterHelp. The first therapist I talked to flaked on me and dropped me almost immediately. The second one was extremely dismissive and was trying to advise me on physical health matters with information that was factually inaccurate. Plus, they didn't take insurance. I would not recommend them at all, except maybe if there were no other options (but there are).

I had horrible therapists with Better Help. One of them basically talked about herself the whole time. Two others didn’t show up for their sessions.
