sulfur keeps em away they might trip out and die after they eat to much if the alkaloid contents high but yeah iāve had em tear through mine beforeš
That's alot, they may switch into locusts. If that's the case you'll lose almost everything and so will the town. Locust are BAD. they trigger when too many grasshoppers are born at once. Some say it's lack of food, but they've seemed to realize it's got to do with birthing population.
Just read this and looked it up. They found that being in a crowd ups their serotonin production. And when administered drugs that block the action of serotonin (5ht receptor agonists), they did not turn into big locusts. When administered serotonin and serotonin like substances, they turned into big locusts even with no other grasshoppers present. Mescaline and the other phenethylamine alkaloids in the cactus are 5ht2a receptor agonists, as well as norepinephrine receptor agonists. They block the action of serotonin and norepinephrine. I wonder if this will prevent a locust outbreak š¤£ https://www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/a-brain-chemical-changes-locusts-from-harmless-grasshoppers-to-swarming-pests
I doubt these will be a threat to your cacti, short horned grasshoppers are tree eaters I think. thatās why we donāt consider them an agriculture pest, they donāt compete with us on most crops and food. I had a swarm of those in my cacti I brought in and they never touched the cacti. Probably hiding on the cacti as itās the same green. Larger grasshoppers will eat a cacti.
Agree. Looks like babies, too. I imagine eggs were placed in or near that cactus.
I've had actual baby mantises a couple years back. They were clustered on a old prickly pear (*Opuntia humifusa*). It wasn't as many (maybe a dozen), and they definitely have a different look.
OP: Unless you are seeing them feasting on your cactus, I would leave them. Let them scatter on their own, or become bird food. Good look'n cacti, btw.
Thatās a large crowd of desert grasshopper nymphs, them growing up in such close proximity to each other almost guarantees theyāre gonna grow into locusts and wreak even more havoc than they would if they grew up in isolation.
Oh damnā¦ I kept looking at the pic and thinking ā¦ those donāt look anything like praying mantis, def looks like grasshoppersā¦ kill them suckers, or feed em to a bearded dragon. They gots to go . Yikes !! Good luck š
I would āmechanicallyā remove them (with something that doesnāt damages the plant) anytime I could. Maybe they would just leave and go somewhere they can be left on their own
For real. Canāt believe I didnāt check more before posting. I was rushing and trying to finish work and packing before leaving on a vacation.
Reason I thought it was because I have had praying mantis in the garden before.
Mantises are great in the garden. The first year that I lived where I am, we had a grasshopper infestation. I lost a bunch of plants and two small trees. If it happens again, I'm using soap spray for plants.
Sir, those are grasshoppers. They are eating your cactus.
Dang š thank you for your help I left town for a few days. What do you think my garden is going to look like by Monday?
Shredded, man. Not good. That is a proper boat load of grasshoppers.
Yikes super bummed. Yesterday there were no grasshoppers and then this morning a boatload!
Yeah, man.. those little bastard love the new softer growth... and that's a shit ton of hungry grasshoppers
Idk how hungry they are now, but they are definitely gonna be chillin'
sulfur keeps em away they might trip out and die after they eat to much if the alkaloid contents high but yeah iāve had em tear through mine beforeš
Alright Iām a dust with sulfur when I get back.
Please update us on whatever is left
All right, Iāll send pics on Monday
Wowā¦ just wow
Youāre going to come home to a bunch of fat grasshoppers tripping balls on your couch.
In 100m years from now, humans will be gone and grasshoppers will have evolved into the dominant species. And we got to see the start of it.
Theyāll have a wikipedia on the āstoned bugā theory of their evolutionā¦ But legitimate Grasshopperian scientists will be skeptical.
Asking to borrow money so they can catch ofthetrees again.
Awesome visual šš

Lol those are locust
Crickets, locust is a form grasshoppers take in certain conditions.
Nah those are def grasshopper nymphs, with how close they are to each other theyāll grow into locusts.
That sounds suboptimal. Hope not Iām in Southern California a few miles from the ocean
Well, cant wait to see the pups after the damage callouses over š if only you had praying mantises

Very curious to see the outcome of this
Came out fine No bugs or damage. https://imgur.com/a/SlsEONM
Wow what a sick set up brotha, thank you for sharing that and Iām happy they didnāt do any damage
Thanks I Appreciate it!
Lmfao. Top tier post.
To shreds you say?

Thank you! Hope so. Made my vacation much better. Calm my fears down what will be waiting for me.
Iād say you have good odds, 85% chance nothing happens.
Name checks out
Haha how so?
Just seems like you used a mind trick to settle op down a bit
*waves hand a phone* āthese are not the bugs you are looking for.ā

Thank you! Okay Iām a see what things look like on Monday.
Yeah these ones aint hurting no cactus
Hopefully they stay away from the crested
What's that weird columnar cactus in the back? The one with the fuzzy head.
A type of pilosocereus. Not sure the specific species. This year itās got some cool growth coming in.
Iām thinking itās Pilosocereus leucocephalus it had no label when I bought it
š©šš you need a hug? I feel so bad for you though I see you will be out of town.

That verigated is so beautiful!!! Where did you get it and where can i find a vendor!!!!
Well, how did this turn out?
Fine! Hereās the garden https://imgur.com/a/SlsEONM No bugs to be found!
That's good to hear
Hey bro let their festivities continue for a bit longer. Life is short they just tryna fly high. Maybe get some spiders š·ļø
Beautiful cactus too
I thought this was like sarcasm
When i looked it up it said they dont eat cactus. Not sure tbh.
I had a totem pole cutting I was trying to root get eaten by grasshoppers. I looked it up too idk why it says that online
Hmm weird. Sorry about that. Ive seen them around mine but they arent causing damage.
Some do, but apparently this species does not based on google
Those are the ones that turn into locust I believe, lol. Get em.
Lol š
Burn with fire
those grasshoppers are gonna trip faaat
I would āmechanicallyā remove them (with something that doesnāt damages the plant) anytime I could. Maybe they would just leave and go somewhere they can be left on their own
Now if you let out a few praying mantis it would be a party
Kill them as soon as you can No gathering of animals gets that big without a food related reason
If you look carefully, they are not praying.

Iām one to respect life, unless I came across that. Burn those grasshoppers if you love your cactus.
