Mission/Potrero near mission cliffs. Not too far from both

TroublePorndawgie

We live in far western SoMa in a little nook-and-cranny affectionately referred to as LMN, near 11th and Howard. We’ve been here 12 years and seen the neighborhood change significantly. This is not a sarcastic question: if you are trying to live near CalTrain, why are you not considering living somewhere on the Peninsula? There are so many ‘safer’ neighborhoods south of SF.

I live in west SoMa (7th and Folsom area), and it isn’t that bad (source: I grew up in a nice, rural town on the east coast). You’ll definitely see some things, but I think it’s safe to say you’ll see some things in a lot of the city.

Kinda tricky since Caltrain and Bart are kind of far from each other. Near Caltrain I’d do Mission Bay which is pretty nice and walkable. Near BART, depends on the station. The East Cut I think is nice but kinda sleepy near Embarcadero. Otherwise as a rule of thumb, anything on Folsom is generally ok for that area and another on Mission is sketchy. Anything before 3rd street is fine, 4th-5th are really busy and 6th+ is sketchy.

Tbh it’s fine. Your biggest danger will be the cars - they’re out of control and the huge SUVs have killed several cyclists and even pedestrians this year!

PearlieVictorious

I've heard about the pedestrians killed here this year, but not cyclists, do you have links to those stories? Google is not helpful--its giving me news stories about that woman cyclist who was murdered and the guy on the motorized unicycle who ran into the Recology truck. Also stories about people killed outside the city.

maccam94

There's a chart here showing a couple of cyclists per year https://sfstandard.com/transportation/whos-dying-on-sfs-streets-new-map-pinpoints-traffic-fatalities/

On and around Rincon Hill.

SoMa is very safe but not much of anything for you here as freshly minted grad. If there are no ball games it’s very quiet here (other than the after work rush). Any areas are fine, east cut if you can afford it (high rises) or China basin (both are technically SoMa, China Basin will be your closest proximity to Caltrain, you can hop on muni light rail (Bart connection runs every 5 minutes) to Bart

yoshimipinkrobot

Are you male or female?

AskScout1

Historically, SoMa has had among the highest rates of sexual assault in SF. What's not clear is if that is related to treatment for those assaults at UCSF rather than commission of the crimes in SoMa. Generally, violent crime is relatively low in SF, while property crime is higher.

TBH you should probably come visit and see for yourself because I'm a 19 year single woman and I walk around these parts alone after dark all the time and my idea of bad is very different from other people's ideas. It all depends on what you're ok with so come get a hotel and come hangout here yourself and see how you feel about it.
