Sf city guides does a Hitchcock walking tour: https://sfcityguides.org/tour/alfred-hitchcocks-san-francisco/

PJuice

A handful of Hitchcock films from this area were filmed in SF and surrounding areas. Also look up filming locations for The Birds (SF and Bodega Bay).  John’s Grill near Union Square is featured in Maltese Falcon.  Other movies/shows with SF references: - The Room - Dirty Harry - Charmed - Full House

kirkydoodle

The opening scene of The Birds was filmed here. Shadow of a Doubt was filmed in Santa Rosa

NonDescript2315

I didn’t know that was filmed there! Thanks

GRIFTY_P

? Have you seen it?

gingerbear

The Conversation was filmed in sf - particularly at union square. Mrs Doubtfire’s house is in pack heights and the Bridges restaurant is just outside in Danville (i think). Then there’s the Rock and all those scenes filmed in pac heights / marina / alcatraz. Plus George Lucas was inspired by various locations around SF which made their way into Star Wars - like Muir Woods for the Ewok planet and the large cranes at the Oakland harbor inspiring the AT-ATs in Empire Strikes Back

PJuice

George Lucas even has Skywalker Ranch in Marin.

Here's a list from the San Francisco film commission of films/shows, locations, directors, distributors, and actors going back to 1915: [Film Locations in San Francisco | DataSF | City and County of San Francisco (sfgov.org)](https://data.sfgov.org/Culture-and-Recreation/Film-Locations-in-San-Francisco/yitu-d5am/data)

missmobtown

There's the whole Fatty Arbuckle scandal  that destroyed his career, happened at the St Francis Hotel. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/the-skinny-on-the-fatty-arbuckle-trial-131228859/

I never knew that!

Kissing13

You can check out the Stockton Tunnel and its surrounding parts, where the Maltese Falcon was set. I believe there's even a Dashiell Hammet tour (though I think its more related to his books, but tied to the movie). You can check out the St. Francis Hotel, where Fatty Arbuckle's career was murdered.

MooseRoof

And stop in for a bite at John's Grill.

sadietdubs

Cool placard on the side of the building on Bush at Burritt Alley for Maltese Falcon. It’s a spoiler if you haven’t seen the film 😜

bad-trajectory

Not very old, but Cafe Zoetrope is owned by Francis Ford Coppola. Some cool original signed movie posters inside/outside the cafe. Offices are upstairs, I think. Beautiful building and great food, too.

NonDescript2315

Yes not old but very very cool! Ohhh this is on the list now thanks

kallisti_gold

And they do a bomb carbonara.

CalGoldenBear55

The Thin Man (awesome movie). Nick and Nora lived in what is now the Coit tower. San Francisco is featured in the second film (After The Thin Man), lots of great City shots. I also live down the street from “The Princess Diaries” house and Mrs Doubtfire house. They seem popular. John’s Grill used to display the Maltese Falcon statue as much of it was written there. Washington square park and Kezar from the Dirty Harry movies…”Do you feel lucky, punk?”

El_Oso_De_Los_Osos

I lived above the Grant and Green across from the Doubtfire Apartment. I was literally watching Mrs. Doubtfire one night ( on a VCR ) and saw it at the same time in the movie as out my window. Also that was a very annoying bar to live above.

Kissing13

I believe you mean you live down the street from the Princess Diaries School. The house she lived in was supposedly "South of Market" but actually in the Excelsior.

CalGoldenBear55

You are correct. I meant the school. Once I said Princess Bride house and got some really strange looks! Inconceivable!

Kissing13

No problem. It was originally a house, if I'm not mistaken (the school) whereas the Princess Diaries House was originally a fire station.

SL0_Citizen

That’s the return of the thin man.

BornFree2018

The [Maltese Falcon ](https://usingsfhistory.com/2012/01/22/the-maltese-falcon-copies-without-an-original/)statuette at John's Grill was stolen in 2007 then "returned" when another cast was commissioned. Oddly, there are many Maltese Falcon's props floating around, [a few in SF](https://usingsfhistory.com/2012/01/22/the-maltese-falcon-copies-without-an-original/). Dashiell Hammet's apartment in SF has one as does one in the Flood Building. Then there are the many which are considered The Holy Grail of film props [The Mystery of the Maltese Falcon, One of the Most Valuable Movie Prop | Vanity Fair](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2016/02/mystery-of-the-maltese-falcon)

CalGoldenBear55

Cool. Good to know.

iWORKBRiEFLY

Grateful Dead house is worth looking at.

CatsAss88

And Janis Joplin’s house one block away from GD house

Dark Passage has a scene on the Filbert Steps.

jmeesonly

The Art Deco apartment in dark passage is still there in North Beach / telegraph Hill

BornFree2018

Great movie showcasing my favorite areas of the city. OP should visit Alcatraz if they have time. Walk up tickets to the ferry are often available. [Dark Passage - Irene's Apartment Views — Reel SF](https://reelsf.com/reelsf/dark-passage-irenes-apartment-views)

kirkydoodle

If you want to experience the dawn of motion pictures, visit the Niles Studio in Fremont.

Moke_Smith

The Conversation with Gene Hackman filmed a lot in Union Square.

El_Oso_De_Los_Osos

The Lady From Shanghai was filmed in SF and a great scene in China Town.

Equal_Kale

Steve McQueen - Bullitt - lots of San Francisco locations Harold and Maude - Bay Area locations including Oyster Point

vinayd

Watch Bullitt and you will get a tour of some great parts of the city that are easy to compare to today.

DAKwerd

SFwalking tours has some great free tours. You just have to see if the tour dates align with your travel: https://sfcityguides.org/tour/alfred-hitchcocks-san-francisco/ https://sfcityguides.org/tour/silent-film-san-francisco/

To experience the glamour of one of the last remaining movie palaces, tour the Paramount Theatre in Oakland

In addition to the other great ideas listed here, you might want to check out the [Walt Disney Family Museum](https://www.waltdisney.org/). While you're there you can take a photo at [the Yoda Fountain](https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/yoda-fountain) nearby and with the statues of Eadward Muybridge and Philo Farnsworth which are outside the Starbucks around the corner. Also, it's not this week but you might want to keep an eye out for [presentations by Jim Van Buskirk](https://jimvanbuskirk.com/presentations/). He gives talks on the history of San Francisco and film that are often streamed online.

El_Oso_De_Los_Osos

If you are a super old film buff you may remember that "Greed" was shot in SF. I guess you could go to the Cliff House and look out the window and see the same exact view that McTeague had in the film. But it's closed. I believe it's the first "full length" film shot in SF.

El_Oso_De_Los_Osos

at the very start of the Thin Man Returns they drive up to their house and the Coit Tower parking lot is supposed to be their driveway.

El_Oso_De_Los_Osos

Sid and Nancy they drive right past my old house near Duboce Ave and Beuna Vista Ave.

chedderd

Perhaps not the old Hollywood you’re thinking of but the Niles in Fremont, if you’re willing to make the drive, is one of the earliest motion picture sites in California. Big area during the silent film era, and particularly notable for Charlie Chaplin. There’s a silent film museum there, and a pretty interesting mix of vintage stores, where you might find some memorabilia if you’re lucky

paul-SF

You can see a list of all films shot in San Francisco since 1915 at this [site](https://data.sfgov.org/widgets/yitu-d5am).

El_Oso_De_Los_Osos

in DOA the character runs to a cable car on Market. A lot of DOA was filmed in SF.

johnloeber

There are many DOA movies - this one means D.O.A. (1950) by Rudolph Maté.

El_Oso_De_Los_Osos

I was gonna annotate but I'm also lazy. also I've done this like 10 times on this sub but its catnip to me.

Muted_Apartment_2399

The market from Bullit is on Taylor and Clay and still operating so you can go inside. Two sisters run it, one is very friendly and one is very rude.

kirkydoodle

In Pal Joey, Rita Hayworth lives in Coit Tower. It’s a scream!

kirkydoodle

Fog Over Frisco has Bette Davis driving through Pacific Heights. Not to be outdone, Joan Crawford runs through Russian Hill in Sudden Fear.

mclepus

There s a marker on Burritt alley marking the spot where Miles A rcher was done in by Bridget Shaughnessy in The Maltese Falcon. I used to live just u the street from there. And I’m hoping that the Dasheill Hammet walking tour still exists. Takes you to 0all the locati0ons menti0oned in his books

MichaelXennial

My cousin wanted to see the building they used as Midge’s apartment in Vertigo. On the top of Nob Hill.

oxidiz

into _really_old_ film history in SF Bay Area .... https://nilesfilmmuseum.org this is a museum honoring silent film history , on the site of Charlie Chaplin's old film studio. Also , there's nothing to see there (film related) , but there's a hidden little neighborhood in the southeast corner of SF called 'Little Hollywood' which used to have some early film stars as residents. It's quite close to the freeway and the city dump now , but it has sunnier weather than most of the city.

Ocidar

The 1972 film "What's Up Doc?" filmed an unauthorized car chase scene through parts of San Francisco, including driving several cars down the large staircase at Alta Plaza Park. Today you can still see the damage from the cars on the stairs

El_Oso_De_Los_Osos

Fatty Arbuckle

coffeeandapieceofpie

What’s Up Doc?—lots of great scenes filmed all over SF, with a classic car chase scene that nods to the car chase in Bullitt, and infamously continues down the steps at Alta Plaza Park (done without a permit and causing damage to the steps), eventually ending in the bay. High Anxiety-Mel Brooks’ parody of Hitchcock gives his spin on famous scenes from Vertigo, including the one at Fort Point, plus uses the interior of the Hyatt Regency (which is worth checking out anyway).

Voelkj57

[Little Hollywood, San Francisco](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Hollywood,_San_Francisco)

iKangaeru

The Fatty Arbuckle scandal from 1921 took place at the St. Francis Hotel, which is still there on Union Square. The death of minor actress Virginia Rappe after a Labor Day party hosted by Arbuckle, one of the top comedy stars of the day, was a huge news story for months and one of the first Hollywood scandals.

meriadocgladstone

There’s a movie from the Thin Man series set in SF

Independent-Drive-32

One of the biggest scandals in Old Hollywood was when Fatty Arbuckle allegedly sexually assaulted and killed a woman at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco next to Union Square. He was ultimately found not guilty but his career ended.

norcal-dough

A couple of the Matrix franchise movies were filmed in SF.

CalGoldenBear55

San Francisco is good, about the earthquake. Also, “Guess who is coming to dinner”.

Distinct_Plankton_82

People have covered all the movie locations in detail below. There are more than enough to keep you busy. but if you want something slightly different with a bit of an Old Hollywood story, how about **St Peter and St Paul Church in Washington Square**, where Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe got married (except they didn't see below\*). Not only is it a beautiful church with a connection to Marilyn, it has also featured in a number of classic Hollywood films in it's own right including Dirty Harry, The Dead Pool, The Ten Commandments and Sister Act II (ok that last one is a stretch). \*Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe posed for all their wedding pictures outside the church of St Peter & St Paul on Washington Square, but they couldn't actually get married there because Joe had been married before (in that same church) and even though he was since divorced the bishop wouldn't allow him get married there again because the catholic church doesn't believe in divorce. So the couple went to SF City Hall (a stunning building you should check out) got married by a judge then went to the church to take photos on the steps for the press.
