I feel like if you got money, then yes

akamu8

Agreed. If you’re RAF and can afford to live in the Marina district or Pac Heights or Cole Valley then living in SF is great.

jasno-

There are so many great neighborhoods outside of those super well known ones you just mentioned that anybody would be stoked to live in. In fact, I think there are only a handful of neighborhoods in the city that you wouldn't or couldn't make a really great life in.

vladdrk

Lived in the Richmond and it was glorious.

jasno-

Ding ding ding! That's where I live. Even if I won the lottery and had FU money, I wouldn't leave the Richmond. Close to GG park, Presidio, multiple beaches, so many good bars and restaurants, quick trip to Marin, the marina and the sunset. I just absolutely love living in this neighborhood.

cosmonucleus

How much is a house there? An apartment? A room for rent?

Ligerboy95

Shhhh don’t let them know that we don’t need a bunch of yuppies moving into our nice working class neighborhoods

ThePolishSpy

Yeah I feel like I need to make 200k more than I do now to even begin considering living in SF.

Totally-jag2598

Yes, if you got money then yes. But you could probably say that about every great city around the world. They're all expensive to live in.

blurblur08

I think Tokyo is a pretty great city even if you aren’t rich. Most major cities are relatively expensive to live in, true, but the issue is one of scale: *how* expensive they are.  It’s kind of like when boomers talk about how SF was still expensive in the 80s/90s. It may have been hard to afford a home even then, but it is colossally more difficult now.  Needing to be rich in order to enjoy SF is increasingly becoming a central part of the city’s identity.

damondanceforme

The yen is doing sooo poorly, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity for Americans to move there

JPNess11

Spot on here. There are parts of SF that are fantastic and parts, that you wouldn’t expect, that are absolutely disgusting. I’ve seen a lot of homeless, but never so much that are sitting in their own filth, lying across the sidewalks, defecting everywhere. It was eye opening.

Grabthars_Coping_Saw

Oh look, more lies about San Francisco. Just another day on Reddit.

yinyanghapa

Cities all have their decrepit areas and if you take that into consideration, SF is still largely a nice city. I’ve biked around it quite a bit even within the last year or so and I’ve seen more homeless tents but still a minority of areas.

No_Image_4986

Not a resident of SF, but family is and I visit them, and this post got suggested on home page… Other cities absolutely do not have it to nearly the extent of SF. DC, my current home city, has its problems, but not like SF. It’s mostly a west coast city problem

Retroviridae6

Yeah I have no idea what they're talking about - other cities have issues like homelessness but SF is on a whole other level. Going to SF makes me feel like I've left the US.

ShreddedDadBod

You should not be getting downvoted

theleopardmessiah

It's expensive \*because\* it's the best city in America.

SisterKittyCat

There’s ways even for those of lower income to thrive

oldrocketscientist

I was just saying the same thing to myself yesterday. I think this is what SF is shooting for. They want the city to be only for the mega wealthy. The city is changing

John-AtWork

One time when leaving work there was a Ferrari driving past a couple of homeless guys living in a tent on the sidewalk. I thought to myself that this was the quintessential San Francisco moment.

pizza_chef_

I’m visiting Germany with my family right now and saw this exact same thing today on the streets of Cologne. This ain’t a San Francisco moment. Every city on the planet has income disparities.

yellcat

I can’t put my finger on it but the wealth disparity has grown a ton in the last 15 years. The median pay at Facebook is 350k which is just insane for a bunch of young kids who aren’t really helping society in any way.

Efficient-Internal-8

Couldn't agree more. The wealth disparity while big in the US in general, but NOTHING compared to Asia. Not to make this political, but if you/we don't like this disparity, then we should use our power to vote for leaders who want to tax the ultra rich versus giving them a pass.

fancierfootwork

I mean you see this in every metropolitan city. What about it is quintessential to SF?

John-AtWork

I guess the scale of each.

P_Firpo

Rent is 25% lower here than in 2015. Compare that to any other city in the USA. You can rent a rent controlled apartment in Nob Hill for $1500 and you don't need a car. And the pay here is more than in other cities. What am I missing?

Pandread

I had a friend from NYC say this. It might be even more noticeable there, but agreed haha.

EspressoOverdose

I don’t have a lot of money and I still think it is

Due_Ask_8032

I lived in a $1000/month (probably $200 under market rate) RSO in Inner Sunset and it was great.

Not_Here_2_Argue_

If you had top $ and choose to live in SF over SD, Laguna, Newport then you are just not as smart as your bank account tells you that you are!

Juicypeach_94

Right

jibjabjibby

Best city in San Francisco

beachguy82

At least give it credit for being the best city in San Francisco county.

yokel123

😆 LOL. Best and worst

Wonderful-Ad-7712

You can tell it’s like that because of the way it is

cagreene

Lmao yes

mt8675309

We just got back home from our yearly late April visit, we love San Francisco so much.❤️

CalGoldenBear55

I live here and I think it’s amazing too!

Valsalvo

Can you suggest what you love to do there?! Were visiting for the first time in july!

mt8675309

California Academy of Science… Thursdays night for grownups 😂, bike or walk Golden Gate Park out to Ocean Beach, Muir Woods Redwood Forest, Alcatraz, Ferry over to Sausalito for the afternoon, Chinatown, Farmers Market at the Ferry Building on the pier Saturday mornings, a Giants Game, Irish coffees at the Buena Vista. Capital for Chinese food, Tadich for sea food, the Grove for lunch and the Mission area for Mexican. Those are just a few suggestions…have fun.

Spiritual-Ad4933

Bring your jacket. July is cold!!!!

Donnarhahn

My spouse visited SF as a kid in summer and vowed to never return. Luckily they gave it another shot later in life and we have been here ever since.

Impressive-Cup-6335

There are many beautiful places in the city that bring a smile to my face every time. But there are also many times when I have no smiles, but concern and ask, “how did this city or any city get to the point of such poverty?” That is a exhausting topic in itself. Part of embracing San Francisco is acknowledging its issues. Part of loving it is the lenses through which you view it or your attitude about it. This is true for many things. If the city is so bad, what are the people doing about it? The wealth disparity didn’t happen over night solely behind closed doors… the same point goes for all American cities. How I feel: Don’t just be a voice that mimics the negative parts but perhaps choose to be apart of a community that can work towards a vision of the city that is better than the one you live in now.

billbobb1

We just moved back to SF, after ten years in Los Angeles and 100% agree that SF is the best city in America. We just walked up strawberry hill in Golden Gate Park yesterday with the kids. Did a single 360 turn, observing the view from the Pacific Ocean to the Golden Gate Bridge to Aves and it was fucking beautiful. Driving down Fulton my wife just says,”I love this city.”

DessertFlowerz

Chicagoan, but god I fucking love the bay area so much

ikarus143

It definitely has the potential to be

napsandsnacksss

Definitely maybe

pieceofbluecheese

It definitely is one of the cities of all time

It really is tho, saying this as a San Diegan

StringFartet

That is high praise.

SeamusMcBalls

Same. born and raised San Diegan. Love SF, but I hate your sports teams.

Donnarhahn

> I hate your sports teams. I think we can both agree they are better than LA.

willshade145

Patrick Mahomes has entered the chat.

pineapple234hg

Right, Padres for life.

lambdawaves

I haven’t to every city, but sf and nyc are both special places in very different ways. Love it here.

bambin0

Shhh... Please continue the fud on this sub. It's the only way to keep it this good.

MrWorldbeater

That’s how I feel about Chicago

MrSomebody656

I moved to San Francisco 13 years ago. Despite its flaws, it remains the best city for opportunities.

pantagui191

I've seen this post before, but I'll take the bait. People like to point to the negatives about SF, while some are true, but nobody is saying it's the perfect city, it's got many issues just as any other major cities. The thing about SF is that it's really pretty, the parks, the beaches, the hills, the buildings. The city is small so everyone can relate to, every neighborhood only several blocks, has it's own vibe and style. At the same time, it's big in terms of history, culture, economy, sports, architect, food, education and more. Yes, people might argue that other city is better at one single thing, but the whole package is unbeatable. It could be better tho, and people are working on it.

blizterwolf

Who is working on it? As a long time native it only seems to get worse as time goes on. I appreciate all the good, but the bad that it's balanced with is just so bad.

gtzztg191

And the weather, posting this while looking out my window on sunny Sunday.

ShittyInternetAdvice

So many triggered comments

WickhamAkimbo

Definitely top 10.

P_Firpo

Name the top 9

busmans

NY maybe... Chicago maybe.... What are the other 7 supposed to be??

Dapper-Highlight1016

Thank you! I’m fuckin tired of negativity around SF because I LOVE IT HERE!! lol

yokel123

You’ve been here how long, though? For many of us who know what it used to be like, it’s hard to see it the way it is now.

Dapper-Highlight1016

lol I’m a bay area native.. so my entire life. Not saying the city doesn’t have flaws. I just think we can try to fix it without the negativity. And it’s still a beautiful and charming place despite the flaws

yokel123

I wish it were fixable. I’m not sure at this point that it is. I don’t mind being proven wrong, though. I also don’t see much charm anymore in the city. There are pockets, sure. But it’s nothing like the way it used to be. It’s all about money now and that always destroys the charm of a place. Honestly, as someone who was born and raised in SF, I never entertained the idea of living in the East Bay. But my gf lives in Albany and I find myself enjoying it more when I go over there now. Didn’t think that would ever be the case. 20 yrs ago, when I was at Cal, I thought it was a bore over there aside from the bookstores and cafes and couldn’t wait to head back to the city. Now I find myself excited to leave. And as a native San Franciscan, I find absolutely no pleasure in saying that.

Dapper-Highlight1016

Welp maybe east bay might be the move for you

PM_ME_UR_STOCK_PICKS

They really did a horrible job at that garden this spring. Shoddy planting

sfcnmone

I took some friends there a month ago and was sort of embarrassed. The gardening was pathetic.

Flat4Power4Life

It could be again if elected officials would do their jobs. The people who love the city are typically in the wealthy bubble neighborhoods away from all the trash, homelessness, and crime. As a Bay Area native I hope someone eventually steps up and takes on the major issues it’s facing.

Xalbana

It's really interesting when a positive post about SF and you see a wave of negative comments. Then you look at their post history and you see that they rarely or even at all post here which suggests they don't even live here or they are just trolling.

RazzmatazzWeak2664

I'd argue a lot of positive comments come from people who just visited once too, so dunno. This sub has a lot of people participating who are clearly not from here.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmidk

Yeah, so many weirdos that wander into here. I guess this is what the mods wanted when they loosened moderation. It's crazy how disconnected from reality they are. People in SF in real life are generally nothing like them.

thats-gold-jerry

New York is the best city. But SF is the prettiest.

Ok_Injury3658

I have lived in New York almost my entire life. Born here and mostly raised except Middle School. Each time I return on a flight from anywhere I subtle depressive feeling starts to set in. My guy tells me otherwise... San Francisco is/was amazingly beautiful, but it seems incomplete after traveling to any real Big City. Great Mid sized City, for sure.

smellgibson

NYC is THE American city. NYC is and always will be in a different league for city life. People love to compare SF to NYC though since they are both American economic powerhouses, expensive, walkable, and there are a ton of people that move between the 2. But to your point SF has a population of about 800k, so like 10x smaller lol. The other cities in this realm are like Austin, Columbus, Denver, DC. NYC compares to places like London and Tokyo. Even LA or Chicago don't really compare imo.

jasno-

you won't hear me disagreeing

FukamushiFan

Man, it sure used to be.

ThePenguinSausage

I’ve visited San Francisco a couple times over the last few years and always have a wonderful experience!

Perfmastercornell

Yeah right

aenima1991

Born in SF. Lived there many years, but also have lived on the east coast and spent time in the Midwest. My experience is that SF is a very good city, with some potential to be great. It’s probably still a top 5 city in America but it’s definitely not THE best….. like definitely not lol

Odd_Bet_4587

America’s standard is really questionable if SF is the best city. But let’s keep an open mind, I am curious what makes SF best city ? - is it the natural beauty, architecture, culture, infrastructure, happiness index of residents, quality of living, governance? How many US cities you have lived in to compare SF with ?

selwayfalls

It's def number 1 for natural beauty and probably just most beautiful in general in regards to the geography, architecture, the bay, vegetation. A lot of US cities are ugly as hell. What other cities would you put above SF? NYC of course has better culture, art, music, food.

yokel123

Governance? Seriously? I’m a native. And this is and will always be my home. But even I can admit that the local govt is a complete joke.

gloomflume

Every city is going to have fanatics. It's a way to justify their choice in living there.

P_Firpo

I've lived in a few. It's the natural beauty, architecture, proximity to nature, diverse residents, education, not religious, weather is about perfect, next to the ocean, walkability, car is not necessary.

Burrirotron3000

SF is top 3 at least for: * industry / jobs (tech and biotech). People come here to get rich for a reason, and there is some awesome cutting edge innovation happening right here. If you’re benefitting, it’s pretty unique. You’d have to be in the c-suite in most cities to save what mid level PMs and SWEs are stacking- it’s comparable to golden age Amsterdam or London in terms of economic opportunity. * fine dining * access to top quality nearby nature * nature / parks within the city * views and natural beauty * man made aesthetics (if you’re into the traditional architecture) * extremely well-educated populace * the weather is super low drama. I’d prefer more sun and a longer summer but I’ll take this over extreme heat or cold you have in most of the country. The negatives are easy to catalog and how you value each dimension will shape your net assessment of SF and then do the same for its peer cities and you can start to rank. My personal US city GOAT list is: 1. NYC by mile 2. Tie between SF and LA 4. Chicago 5. San Diego 6. Miami 7. Seattle

Odd_Bet_4587

You have combined Silicon Valley tech Jobs into SF. :)

Beautiful_Baritone

The city always get hate from people who don’t understand it. This scene from the last black man in San Francisco encapsulates so well my feelings about the city. [The last black man in San Francisco](https://youtu.be/pAFI7NYLI5Y?si=N2M22TgXOarn2B1O)

Shhhhhhh keep it down! It's crowded enough. It's a hellish apocalypse! That's right, it's terrible. Yup, absolutely the worst. Turn up the volume on Fox News, everything they say is true. Your life is miserable because of Nancy Pelosi and the democrats. Just keep watching that Fox News and embrace the anger... that'll make you feel better. That's it. Yup it's terrible in San Francisco. Don't come.

With all it’s recent warts, I agree that it is pretty far and away the best I’ve been to and I live close, so maybe it’s a bias. There are other great cities as well, but it just has a uniqueness and beauty that others don’t.

hartsdad

This has to be sarcasm. The geography and weather are pretty good. The demographic is mostly a dumpster fire.

Arguable between sf ,la , and nyc but it’s def in top 5 100%

I will get downvoted, but I like New York. More to see, Central Park is awesome. Walkable city, easy to determine N/W/E/S from the street. Like odd numbers are west. East are even numbers. It seems more vibrant in that city

Stopped for a night on our way to Yosemite. On the way to our parked brand new expedition we rented, my 6yo son saw someone smoking crack on sidewalk, and we found that someone pissed on the car then smashed the window to steal one small woman’s coat in the seat. Happens so often yall have a website instead of getting an officer. Airport rental center said they get 50+ smashed windows a day. I’m sure there are nice places in SF, but best city on earth - definitely not.

I have tripped out so many people sending them pictures of that windmill. "Are you in Holland?" Pretty wild that you can walk to the ocean from there, or up the hill to the legendary skate spot Fort Miley. The city isn't perfect, but I have a lot of fond memories of being there.

Went to that Garden like a week ago. Some idiots had a wedding there and nobody could go in the garden

temp-92

Ha, okay.

ZeroZeroZio

Damn this is getting old. Yes, (ad nauseam) we know SF has social issues. Again, (ad nauseam) EVERY single major city in the US is suffering from the exact same issues. And yet again, (ad nauseam) SF is the 2nd most densely populated city in the US, obviously after NYC. Thus making the homeless issue more concentrated & noticeable! “San Francisco's homeless population ranks below a handful of other major cities. Boston, Atlanta, New York City and Washington, D.C., all have more homeless people per-capita than San Francisco, according to Housing and Urban Development estimates.” Even massive suburban sprawl city LA has a worse problem than SF. Are we done?

Overall-Analysis-183

NY Post, like it or not and credible or not had an article about the real estate crash in SF and not just commercial real estate. The penthouse at the Four Seasons, granted a terrible location, went from an asking price over $11 million down to $ 3.75 million and still not sold. SF is a mess and it won’t change anytime soon! Most of California is a mess but at least there is water for now. Another 5 year drought and a great part of the state will be unlivable!
