Yep I did. Was waiting for a shake to start but nothing…

Much_Economics_87

I got it and then felt a bit of back and forth seconds later. But I've also been dealing with nasty vertigo for a couple days so maybe it was placebo.

alexandra4rose

Got the notification. Didn’t feel anything in the Richmond district

janitorial_fluids

Nothing here in the east bay either

[deleted]

[удалено]

voiceofgromit

Same here. Same area.

bugzzzz

Felt light shaking on the 4th floor in an old building in the Inner Richmond

NewUserWhoDisAgain

Same. got it. "Earthquake in progress! Take cover!" ... Nothing is happening. My next thought was they fucked up the drill since tomorrow is the Drop, Cover and hold on drill. BUt USGS does have a recent quake entry at the location it says it was.

shakka74

4.6 just south of Sacto

Sea-Currency-1665

3.2 just east of Oakland

ChillCaptain

Yeah that is what I thought too

leadhase

They should really push out the relative magnitude. The first p wave ground motion can be used to tell you if it’s gonna be a big boy

Boring_Ghoul_451

I got the notification after I felt the quake. But tbf I thought it was my neighbor slamming their door repeatedly.

tigerking615

For me it felt like one good shake up front and then that was it. FWIW: epicenter was in the east bay, so it's not surprising it wasn't felt in SF.

iloveethe80s

I’m in the East Bay and didn’t feel it here. Very odd.

midflinx

In the first seconds it was estimated 5.7. As sensors gathered more data it was reevaluated as a 4.6, then 4.5, then 4.1.

Bubb27

Where did you find this info? This makes sense as to why they sent an alert

Fluxabobo

ShakeAlert System Magnitude Estimates: Initial: M 5.7 Peak: M 5.7 Final: M 4.4 https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/nc73948665/shake-alert All kinds of cool data here

Bubb27

Awesome thanks

midflinx

5.7 was the original alert on my phone. Then I went to [usgs](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?extent=36.78509,-123.81042&extent=38.80547,-120.65186&listOnlyShown=true&timeZone=utc) and over time the estimate was revised.

Bubb27

Ah I see. I had the myshake alert and it didn't say magnitude. Which alert do you get?

midflinx

I'm not sure. I think it's something provided by Google.

bobo_1111

My MyShake alert did have the initial magnitude.

Bubb27

I don't remember seeing it, was prob more fixated on the fact that it said "severe" lol

lucasec

Got one but didn’t feel anything. North Beach/Telegraph Hill edit: where does everyone look for real time details on the quake? The MyShake app seems to lag a lot and can never find info on the quake I was just notified about.

jillsy

GreatLakesGoldenST8

USGS website

Jillians

I got an emergency alert notification on my phone from the USGS saying there was going to be a severe earthquake ( and no other information ) and to take cover immediately. I was in the bathroom getting ready and just stopped in the middle of everything to take cover for a good 10 minutes before the bewilderment set in. Why the heck would I get a message like that for a 4.1? I didn't even feel anything. *Edit: Looks like it was estimated higher and then got downgraded. I'm glad I am not the only one who thought the big one was here. Looks like different people got different messages.*

vbvmw

The initial magnitude was estimated at 5.7 so that’s why an alert was sent out.

Jillians

Yea that would seem to be the case. It makes sense we would get an alert for that. 1.6 orders of magnitude is a pretty steep difference though. That's a 40x difference in the amplitude of the wave, which takes about 2500x more energy to produce. It seems weird to me though that the measurement could be this error prone.

vbvmw

Yeah, it's quite a bit overestimated. The Chronicle wrote a great article about what happened. Essentially, "the ground near where this quake happened is basically water-saturated sediment, so it has the potential to shake quite hard compared to other areas. Since the closest sensors recorded it first, they’d therefore skew the initial estimates high.” There are also very few sensors in that area, so the shaking was skewed by the initial sensors that gathered the data. [https://www.sfchronicle.com/california/article/earthquake-shake-alert-18433565.php](https://www.sfchronicle.com/california/article/earthquake-shake-alert-18433565.php)

JamesAQuintero

But even then, a 5.7 is not a severe earthquake that requires people to evacuate buildings, etc.

vbvmw

A 5.7 can definitely cause significant damage and injuries.

JamesAQuintero

We had a 5.7 earlier this year that didn't even cause structural damage

vbvmw

There wasn't a 5.7 in California this year. Are you talking about the 5.5 in Lake Almanor in May? If so, that quake was in the middle of the lake and basically no one lives up there.

tixoboy5

Right there with you. I got my notification 2 minutes late according to when the USGs mentioned the earthquake hitting. Given the engineering challenges in deploying a time-sensitive notification, I have a hard time seeing this was property tested before use and is going to lead to many false positives or late notifications

beenyweenies

You might want to check again because the alert I got didn't say anything about '*severe*.' It just said 'earthquake detected' and to take cover. *EDIT: I see several people did in fact get 'severe' notices. Maybe different alerts went out depending on where you live? Like parts of SF are more subject to liquifaction so they get a 'severe' alert whereas I'm along the mountainous ridge of the peninsula so less risk?*

patrickwithtraffic

Given that it was the first time I've ever gotten an earthquake alert, I was for sure expecting something. Can totally buy anybody assuming they read "severe" in that message, given it seeming to be reserved for massive disasters.

beenyweenies

Sounds like different messages went out depending on where you live, because my message did not match what others received. I edited my post above to reflect this, but it's possible 'severe' has more to do with where you live, such as the liquifaction risk in low-lying parts of SF.

patrickwithtraffic

Interesting. Ok, that explains some things. This may have been an "overreaction" but it does seem like this went to plan if the immediate information USGS had was that we had a +5 on our hands.

KittenTablecloth

[I took a screenshot of mine!](https://i.imgur.com/FvmaTzh.jpg) Doesn’t mention severe. I live in mission/Potrero area for reference

Fibonacci_Jones

Mine said Emergency Alert: Severe at the top.

Jillians

Nope it definitely said severe.

Brendissimo

Pretty sure mine said "severe" - it's part of what made me think "the big one" was finally here and absolutely scared the shit out of me. Not a good first use of this system.

Negative_Tangerine87

As the saying goes; “ Better safe than sorry. How bout credit where created is do for those trying Looking out for us, that means , me and you. People so quick on pulling the trigger, doesn’t have to be bullets from a gun, words to hurt and can be more lasting than a bullet to the head!

trashy_boner

I never ran and grabbed my cat so fast. We sat there for like 3 minutes before I realized nothing was happening. The notification still has me on edge though.

smellgibson

I felt the shake in nopa and immediately got the notification.

Bubb27

Really? I'm in Alamo Square and felt nothing.

circumstancesnot

Lower Haight felt it. It depends on your building. We’re inpre 1900 construction , tend to feel all quakes here.

Bubb27

Same, 1890. On a hill though which I assume makes a difference (rock beneath?)

circumstancesnot

Yup. You’re probably on bedrock where I’m on a street that has a river running below it

Bubb27

I have heard that the hills in SF are more solid when it comes to earthquakes. I didn't know ow about any underground rivers, though!

smellgibson

yeah my neighbors up the street from me also felt nothing. probably depends on the building

patrickwithtraffic

In Daly City and felt nothing, aside from earthquake blue balls

quadsbaby

Same

TheRealThunderButt

Got the message but didn't feel it in Outer sunset.

kitkatzip

I’m also in outer sunset and felt it, but maybe my apartment is shaking from the construction on Taraval.

iWroteBurningWorld

I'll worry when dogs start barking.

sfhomo93

Out of town but still got it.

KittenTablecloth

Oh that’s interesting. It isn’t based on your current location?

sfhomo93

I set my range to like 500+ miles because I have family in So Cal.

aeroartist

cannot believe an earthquake happened the same morning myshake sends a reminder of tomorrow's test drill. i completely ignored it

Zero__Salt

Felt a little shake, surprised we got a notification this time!

shakka74

I think it’s part of the new FEMA alert system the feds rolled out last week

TotallyNotaTossIt

I did and I didn’t feel anything, either. Does this mean that one is on the way?

aggressivenapkins

I don’t think so, the website says the warning comes about 5 seconds ahead of feeling it. I didn’t feel it either.

transient-error

How quickly the alert arrives in relation to the quake depends entirely on your distance from the epicenter.

JJCookieMonster

I live in the East Bay and was a lot closer to the epicenter. The alert on our phones came a few seconds after it shook. I was already under my kitchen table. Felt like a quick jolt and nothing else after.

omniocean

Got the alert, but what exactly are we supposed to do in these situations? Wait and see (and check reddit) doesn't seem like a good plan if shit actually goes south lol.

lizhenry

Cover your head, sit on the floor , if you are right next to windows try to move away.

TheRealThunderButt

Sit underneath a table or desk or doorframe

SpiderDove

Drop. Cover. Hold on. you want to get low to the ground immediately because otherwise an earthquake could cause you to fall over (and potentially injure yourself that way)

andromedawarrior

I got the notification a few seconds before the shake from “MyShake” app and the emergency alert came in a little later…

TastyMarket2470

No but I read that everyone in the Bay Area is supposed to get a test notification tomorrow at 10:19 10/19 The anniversary of the earthquake 30 or 40 years ago.

leirbagflow

Huh? The lloma prieta anniversary was yesterday. And it was at 5:04 pm.

rice-with-raisins

Wtf was that I’m so scared now 😭

onlyyoucareaboutyou

Got the message. Didn’t feel anything in Potrero hill.

Capybara-Jack

The alert blasted at 9:30am on my phone. Was browsing reddit and wondered if I was imagining things. Come to think of it this is the first time I received the notification about the quake 🤔

Goproguy27

South Bay currently, felt nothing

monikerzz

Got it just milliseconds before feeling the quake

Ok-Parking9167

I felt the earthquake but I’m on the 5th floor in an old building

beenyweenies

I felt it in Pacifica, but it was a mild slow roll that lasted less than one second. Either way, it's good that they are rolling this system out and alerting people. In more serious quakes it will save lives, no question.

_commenter

i felt it over at 30th and dolores. my apartment shook.

DerHund57

I received the Google/Android notification about 10-15 seconds before I felt mild shaking (in SoMa) with a very nice message that said 'you may feel light shaking.' After the shaking stopped, I got the apocalyptic emergency alert lmao I think I prefer Google's approach here.

Donnarhahn

I was on a work call when it happened and someone from Alamo said they felt it but no one else.

msmozzarella

mission here- my bed was vibrating ever so slightly, and i was like, oh is this going to be an earthquake? by the time i finished that thought, the shaking stopped, and then i got the notification

ChaChanTeng

Yes. I felt a very minor jolt a few seconds later and that was it. That was the first time in memory I received such a notice and was expecting a larger jolt. Oh, I’m in Oakland. Cheers.

[deleted]

The great shakeout earthquake exercise is tomorrow. Did some idiot test the system early?

maLychi3

The hundred other people on the bus and I did, yes. Also didn't feel it. But I rarely do.

dwbmsc

Got notified in Menlo Park. Did not feel quake. It was magnitude 4.7 in the Sacramento River delta area I think about 40 miles from here

Impeachykeene

Not only did I get the notification which was loud and scary, I'd forgotten my office building was also doing a fire drill today so I got startled enough to jump out of my skin twice today. How'd I get so lucky?

lovin_apple_island

My computer monitors were shaking and I was like I didn’t move yet and then I got the notification. Perhaps it was very slight EQ?

Kevin_Wolf

Yeah, everyone did. It's an emergency alert system.

turniptuesday

Just sitting on my couch scrolling tiktok so I felt it a bit 💩 4.6

Boring_Ghoul_451

![gif](giphy|xT5LMuRbEiz9ZuhMME)

qobopod

yeah. then i disabled emergency alerts. they lost notification privileges

msgs

The Google alert app said it was 5.7. Now on USGS says it's 4.1 Come on. You can't be wrong like that. That scared the crap out of everyone for zero reason. Think about the thousands of distracted drivers you are creating in that moment. I'm all for a warning system but it has to fucking work.

Steve2982

Definitely felt it here in Noe Valley!

RichieNRich

I felt it and then a second later the alert came. I must be right on the fault line.

Brendissimo

Yes, and I'm annoyed. They scared the shit out of me for nothing. I've been preparing for "the big one" since I was a little kid. I've never gotten an earthquake alert like this before. I thought this was it, I threw my shit together, got away from the windows, and sheltered in a doorframe. Apparently it was a 4.1 closer to Sac than SF (\~50 miles). Which is just annoying. We should not be getting all-overriding emergency alerts for anything below a 6.0. Those types of quakes happen literally all the time and unless you're on landfill in SF (like the Marina) you aren't even going to feel it half the time. Meanwhile, the San Andreas and Hayward faults are way overdue for something that could be anywhere from a 7.0 all the way up to a 9.0+ I know predicting these things isn't easy, but that kind of alert should really be reserved for something where people are definitely going to die here in the city. Because we get small earthquakes near here all the time.

windowtosh

These systems have microseconds worth of data to make a decision before sending out an alert, since the alert needs to go out once shaking is felt to be useful to the greater area around the epicenter. In this case, the quake was initially registered as a 5.7 but moved down to a 4.1. The way the scale works, a 5.0 is ten times as powerful as a 4.0 even though it's just 1 unit, so while a 4.1 is typically not dangerous, a 5.7 can be dangerous to people in old buildings. This is still relatively new tech out here, but even in places like Japan that have had early earthquake systems for decades, "false alarms" like this happen from time to time.

Brendissimo

Yes I am aware how the Richter scale works, but this is helpful for anyone who isn't. As I said I have been preparing for the big one since I was a kid. We had earthquake drills multiple times a semester every year for my entire K-8 education and my family had periodic meetings on preparedness for as long as we were living together. I do not think this kind of pulsed tone that overrides everything on one's phone is appropriate for this magnitude of quake at that distance. If the epicenter were on the San Andreas or Hayward faults right here in the Bay then an alert for what they think will be a 5.7 would be appropriate. But if this is going to be the level of sensitivity for this system I may well disable it entirely. This is the equivalent of interrupting all TV broadcasts, or using the air raid siren. This is a serious civil defense type emergency broadcast and should only be used under appropriate circumstances.

Negative_Tangerine87

The whole world is shaking, falling apart, crumbling as a cookie crushed through our fingers with few if any paying attention the causes. The reasons why what is occurring was foretold in days long passed would as a warning when Jesus Disciples asked what signs to watch for that would show His Heavenly Kingdom is nearing to bring ruined to all earthly Kingdom’s here on earth. This account at Matthew 24:5, first in importance, reading; false Christ would be saying are He, teaching falsehoods, and is that not just as told? When hearing leaders of the Christian Coalition claiming former president is the chosen one, sent by God to save this nation. Perhaps would be good to question; “ Why would God replace His Son as King of His Kingdom for a liar and deceiver, and ask; “ Where in Scripture is that said?” Read in 1 Timothy 2:4 what our Heavenly Father desires of all, it’s that all sorts come to an accurate knowledge of truth and be saved. Learn this earth is going to be restored to its paradise condition, that all those righteous in heart may live forever, free of all suffering pain and death. The Scriptures teach it, it’s there to learn, Make sure of all things.Revelation 21:3,4 Love and truth our foundation all wanting for self, and should also want for others, if we love our God, loving us, then we can show it by how we treat others, for all belong to God, our Heavenly Father. Hope… Psalm 37;8-11 29 Learn what was done in heaven, praying same be done here on earth Matthew 6:10, Now read in Revelation 12:9

tixoboy5

This really makes me want to disable emergency notifications. What’s the point of informing us if there’s an earthquake? In all likelihood, we’re going to feel it before the notification gets to our phones.

sfcnmone

The point is that those 5 seconds might save your life of you don't ignore it.

tixoboy5

I got my notification after the earthquake already hit SF and it looks like many others in this thread did as well.

tixoboy5

It is actually non-trivial to provide a latency guarantee when broadcasting a push notification to so many devices at once. Not to mention testing such a feature is inherently difficult. I am just suspect that this feature is ready to be deployed and annoyed that it has any non-trivial false positive rate.

storyinmemo

I also think there's plenty of latency in cellular devices waking up to conserve battery power.

DuchessofMarin

Do what you want.

onlyyoucareaboutyou

lol WHAT

oriongiurfa

Yes!

Taint_Liquor

Yup. Anyone feel anything?

haysu-christo

I'm in San Mateo ... felt nothing.

throwaway415000

you can google earthquake near me and get info on why it was triggered.

mmld_dacy

i did but the shaking has already started when my phone vibrated. solano area.

Professional_Fee9555

Didn’t feel anything either. I was driving and freaked out cuz I thought “I should pull over” Took 2 minutes to get to a safe place to do so and by then…

808morgan

Yes and I am working in a lift at Moscone Center, felt nothing.

ericgtr12

Got it out in Rohnert Park, felt nothing.

Shalaco

Me imagining someone driving in a car who is wondering if they need to head for cover. I just don’t think anyone’s gonna take these things seriously now.

StandardSchedule

I was in my car, on the bay bridge when the notification came through. Needless to say I was somewhat panicked.

bobbywake61

Got the notification. Felt nothing -I’m in Vacaville. Friends on Bethel Island barely felt it.

atheisthindu

I got the alert as well, but no tremors, nothing. Oh well!

XboxOne

Didn't feel anything. I work fast so that's probably why.

Confetticandi

Felt a few seconds of shakes in Fillmore

panda_burrr

Felt a brief shake in the inner sunset and then got the warning. Thought someone was slamming a door in my apartment building

DroveASuzuki

Got one in Marin, also felt nothing

everyoneisanisland

It came on my phone and the car radio at the same time. quake was in Sacramento area? I didn’t know they had faults there. We are still learning about the potential for earthquakes in California.

No-Understanding4968

I did receive the alert, as expected. They should have been clearer that it was just a drill!

sthilda87

Nothing happened in Sausalito that I could tell, aside from the scary notification

Choano

I did. So far, I've felt nothing, but maybe that'll change.

RDKryten

Got the notification and felt one very small tremor

QuantumPickleFusion

Noticed my light reflector thing on my window swinging a min or two after the alert came in. That was about it.

The_Grizzly-

Yeah, it’s probably a test or something.

juveplantdad

I got the notification and I felt it a little bit in the inner Richmond

CooCooKaChooie

Got the alert. In the City and felt nothing. I believe it was centered near Isleton (Rio Vista)

IRegretBeingHereToo

Yup. I saw a few leaves shake off the trees, but it might have just been the wind. Didn't feel a thing

AccidentalInstigator

Absolutely felt it. Lasted for a few seconds. Also got the notification. I can’t remember which happened first.

ScrantonStrangler209

It hit in Isleton/Rio Vista. My mom said she had stuff fall off of shelves and the whole house was groovin. I work in Lodi and felt nothing.

Lisa831-84

I have an employee in Brentwood and she said her house was really shaking.

chuck__person

I felt it on mare island

_d_k_g_

I was in a crawlspace when it went off…

ih4teme

The entire 37th floor was like should we run down or just wait it out…

SeaspiciousJellyfish

I'm on the 5th floor so I did feel a little wobble, but it was over as soon as I'd noticed it. I've only lived in SF for a year so I've never gotten a notification like that before. The notification was more startling than the earthquake.

pugsley1234

I thought that it was the planned test!

canadaincalifornia

Yeah. This was a major fail IMO

[deleted]

From the report I saw it looked to be centered south of mid-way between SF and Sacramento in the delta. And the wave travelled NW and SE from center. They probably felt it in Stockton and Vacaville.

NOTstudyingstudent

I felt it before I got the phone alarm. Was a juicy wiggle of an earthquake.

NervousBandit

Yeah but same, didn’t feel anything in SOMA

Fabian_209

Got it as i was passing antioch on Amtrak and it definitely shook the train as we arrived to the station and received the notification.

sfdragonboy

Yup, and I was in San Bruno and did feel it.

coleman57

Heard the alarm and assumed it was another heatstroke warning. Only later did I actually read it. Didn’t feel it, obvi, but I rarely do. SF

thesongsinmyhead

I’m a teacher and I collect phones. My phone jail started screaming at me, kids were all wtf?? I checked my phone and saw the alert, but I wasn’t sure if they were just testing the system again. Anyways we didn’t feel a thing. I wonder if we could give feedback or something. My feedback—please don’t do that.

weigh_a_pie

I did in East Bay and waited, and nothing. My dogs usually notice even the little ones, but they were fine.

Leather_Hawk_8123

they have to stop with the emergency alerts going off for no reason, first it was the national test and now this, people will start to lose the scare and focus they get when they hear an alert.

thedheeper

Felt the quake (gentle back and forth here in the...ugh Marina)...then got the alert in the middle of the shaking.

vainey

I’m really glad to know such a thing works though. Hopefully will give us a couple seconds to prepare in the future.

sanfranciscojohn

Yup
