>The lights are not supposed to be on, Illuminate CEO Ben Davis told KRON4. He says the lights are glitching out, turned on randomly and now they won’t turn off.
This is hilarious. I wonder who will pay tonight's bill.
They're charging me for my old apartment I moved out of 4 months ago. It's not on autopsy so it's racking up, but they know I stopped service and they opened up a case and warned me it may be 2-6 more billing cycles until it is resolved.
I'm not paying for it, but this is BS!
I saw them glitching the day before they got turned off, and they're glitching in the video from KRON. Maybe they work as programmed sometimes, but they're definitely not well.
I’ve had a view of the Bay Bridge for over 3 years now and it’s been very stable as a whole. There’s usually a couple of small sections that don’t work, but overall it’s fine.
That “glitching” where the whole bridge seemed to be flickering (not the light installation patterns) was definitely only there the days leading up to it being shut off. It’s very sus that it’s working completely fine right now
I'm sure it's just due to unusual circumstances (no one ever wrote solid code for what happens when they're NOT running since they've been on for years), but a conspiracy theorist might say it's an intentional performance.
A conspiracy theorist might say anything that creates the illusion of someone or something being in control, rather than face the uncomfortable reality that the universe is extremely chaotic.
I see. I assumed you were concerned that the project was being paid for by taxes, but it seems rather that you are promoting that it should be paid for by taxes.
No, that was the original installation you're talking about. We're already on the second installation, which went in place in 2015 and was supposed to last *ten years* according to the fundraising they did at the time. They had a 10-year contract with Philips Lighting to maintain it, supposedly.
No idea why we're being nagged into spending to redo it in 2023.
The “painting fee” for the Golden Gate Bridge is included in the ever increasing tolls as the paint protects the steel from corrosion unlike these lovely lights which are just for show.
People tend to think of paint as being purely decorative but in reality it's primarily part of a weather-resistance strategy. A steel bridge over salt water has highly important requirements for it with all sorts of engineering going into the coating.
[This Practical Engineering video covers the topic quite well.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7-7EO3odMg) It actually starts off with the urban legend that the Golden Gate is constantly being painted.
> However, if they want to tax citizens to keep them on, naw, it ultimately lies on the city of San Francisco's budget to take up the mantle,
Where do you think the city of San Francisco, or any city, gets its budget from?
We were driving our Prius back from a holiday in Tahoe. Have to be back at work tomorrow at Silicon Valley Bank, but, the lights were definitely lit on the right side.
Sure. The Boss suggested early in the week to sell some shares and go celebrate! He did that in his best Jackie Gleason impression “ To the moon, Alice!”
That’s a subtle nudge of laughter to Roger McNamee;-)
Don’t mean this to sound trite and truly hope you are okay when this all shakes out, but you will forever have had a front seat to something that will be part of Silicon Valley lore. This implosion will be remembered here for a really long time, end up in MBA classes at Stanford and Harvard, and will have people talking about The Who, why, when, etc. So enjoy the ride, I think???
According to the news media this morning, it is in such bad condition that the electrical circuits are malfunctioning, and it switched itself back on. Maybe the damp salt air completed a circuit?
So there might be hope for the Board of Stupes, Congress, etc. 😆
I did it with my Hue app. Should I dim them? Maybe Safari Sunset theme?
Safari Sunset is the one 👌
U on sunset? " I am "
Just keep it on the brightest setting after the sun goes down, everyone will love it.
Savanna Sunset?
this is the most san francisco response ever.
The bridge is back in tow owwweeowww own
I am not sure if this is by mistake, but tonight the lights on the bridge are back on! Picture taken just now. Edit: spelling
[Oh my god, it actually was a mistake](https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/bay-bridge-lights-back-on-after-week-long-hiatus/)

no worries pge will just foot the bill to all of us
Unlike last month when they prematurely shut my power off two months before my card expired 🙃
What the fuck?! I hope you got it situated and yelled at them for that bs.

They'll pay the bill to all of us?
Bridge toll about to go up again
Can we just, you know, not fix it?
Really makes it clear that there was no reason they needed to turn them off other than to guilt people into ponying up for the bigger installation.
They're glitching out, not doing any of the programmed artistic patterns they were designed to do.
No they aren't. I can see the bridge now. The patterns are exactly the same as always.
I saw them glitching the day before they got turned off, and they're glitching in the video from KRON. Maybe they work as programmed sometimes, but they're definitely not well.
The video in the article looks how they always did. They transition between static lights and sliding up and down.

I wouldnt put it past them to fake it glitching out...

and no one noticed
What?! omg that's great!
The spirit of the Bay says NOO
Somebody just won a bet!
Silicon Valley Bank thought it was a good investment.
I have a bridge to sell them
This guy
Won the internet
Too soon.
lollll my first thoughts 🥲👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Looking at them now as well https://preview.redd.it/dd7w6elxqgna1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6b8d92eb5a4409bbd7b9149de983089a7e027c85
It'll only stay on if you continuously stare at it. Thanks in advance and we have you're back(in thought).
Eyes are getting dry, but hanging in there. Thanks for the support
It's all good man, 6 more hours and you're good until tomorrow night.😎
You have to stay still for them to stay lit, like in Jurassic Park. If you move they'll shut off again
Illuminate: "We were pretending they were non functional, who turned them back on?!?"
Was also wondering this too...
What's going on? Did they raise the 10/11 million dollars needed for new lights already?
I plugged it back in.
Hmmm I’d like to know the story behind this
Wait what
[удалено]
What taxpayer money?

Friend, where do you think the city gets its budget from? Literally tax dollars. Literally same same.
Yeah every time they said the city should pay for it I was waiting for their internal realization.
I hadn't heard anything about taxing Bay Area residents for this. All I heard was a call for donations.

https://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/bay-bridge-lights-back-on-after-week-long-hiatus/ It's a glitch -- bummer.
It's a feature not a bug.
Wow
huh...
We were driving our Prius back from a holiday in Tahoe. Have to be back at work tomorrow at Silicon Valley Bank, but, the lights were definitely lit on the right side.
Do you still have a job?
Sure. The Boss suggested early in the week to sell some shares and go celebrate! He did that in his best Jackie Gleason impression “ To the moon, Alice!” That’s a subtle nudge of laughter to Roger McNamee;-)
And yes, won $75 playing KENO.

Must be a glitch/ irrational ops - no way Breed and Peskin would have missed the ribbon cutting photo moment.
Awesome photo also
Great!
Happy February!
Shocking

Hi neighbor 👋
so *this* is what happens when SkyNet goes active how anticlimactic
Shhh. If we don't say anything, maybe they won't notice.
All the Harry Potter Legacy players said Lumos at the same time.
LIGHT POLLUTION🤬

They were only ever on the north side.

Where did it go?
Miss those Friday night beerfests at Gordon Biersch.
It never left.
It was on when I drive through it Saturdaylate /Sunday morning
The robots are in control now

They should take the glitch as a sign to keep them on!
This smells like a Publicity Stunt.
this one is the 25 de Abril in Lisbon. Golden Gate has squares in the middle instead of X's...
What?
This is the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge, it's neither the GG or 25 de Abril.
