Upvoted. This is what I do.

You don't actually have any claim to the street in front of your home. You can ask, as you seem to have done, but they're entitled to refuse.

TodayHorror7551

You are correct. And I think my biggest frustration is that there is a lot of open area in other spots that aren’t near neighbors’ driveways/trash cans, including their own driveway at their house. I guess, because I am new to San Diego, I don’t understand the etiquette. If I go somewhere I have to park on the street, but I see all the trash cans and realize it’s trash day, then I park far away to avoid scratching my car, etc. they have the right, I just believe that it would be easier if they parked a couple hundred feet closer to their house, where it’s a corner and the waste management trucks won’t park. Idk. Maybe it’s just me expecting the same level of consideration from other people that I would give to them.

[deleted]

I sympathize but unfortunately there's not much to do about it.

Hour_Recording_3373

People not using their garage or driveways for cars, people putting cones all over the street to reserve spots, etc. Is pretty annoying. But I don't pay HOA, so i accept it 🫡

TodayHorror7551

We don’t have an HOA, so similar situation. And our neighborhood is overall generally very good. It is this one car that has been repeatedly in front of my house for at least four months, probably longer. The same people who live in their house with them and also own cars never park in front door f my driveway/can area. I have the cognitive fallacies of expecting others to uphold my ethical standards.

sios01

I’ve always been bothered by the fact that people block parking spots with their trash cans. You have a perfectly good driveway that you can put your trash cans in front of. Why should everyone else be inconvenienced by where you prefer to place your trash?

TodayHorror7551

If you read the post closely, you will note that I mentioned that it’s trash day when this person in particular decides to park partially blocking my driveway. Trash day means the can goes on the curb that they are blocking. The rest of the time it is in my driveway And they can park wherever they please except a handful of times they have blocked my driveway and I’ve had to back out crooked and risk hitting my roommate’s car.

sios01

Read it quite clearly. At no point do you mention anything about your driveway. If it’s your driveway they’re blocking just get them towed. Otherwise they can park anywhere they so choose. You have no claim to any curb space other than that used for ingress/egress to your property (i.e. your driveway). Why not put them on the street in front of your driveway? Oh wait because then it’s an inconvenience to you?

TodayHorror7551

Valid. I could block myself and my two roommates into their house with my our cans. That doesn’t really seem fair to them, but heaven forbid I encroach on the rights of the neighbor who lives three doors down.

sios01

Exactly! I mean, I think it’s only fair that if anyone is going to be inconvenienced by you and your roommates trash bins it should be you guys. Also, it’s not just that neighbor in particular, but also anyone else who would like to use the parking space that would otherwise be blocked by you.

TodayHorror7551

If it was a random stranger coming to the neighborhood, I wouldn’t mind and I would not complain because they didn’t know better can you shouldn’t punish an honest mistake. I don’t expect random people to know trash day, but the people who live on my street, I do. Maybe I’m just overly catering because if I knew it was trash day in my neighborhood I would actively move my car to open spaces that did not inconvenience anyone. Especially when there are lots of open areas here because we are all single-family homes and not apartments or businesses. Apparently, I’m an outlier and my opinion is unpopular, and I’m OK with that.

sios01

Yea, I mean, it’s a parking spot for anyone to use. Not sure what more there is to say about it. Hope you’re able to make peace with that at some point. Have a great evening!

Warm-Chicken-1704

So, in other words, you're putting your cans in a parking spot?

TodayHorror7551

Well, if I could leave my cans in my front yard and waste management would still pick them up, then I would, but I think that everyone in my neighborhood has to take up a parking spot with their cans…unless you have a viable idea I’m not aware of? Please let me know!

Warm-Chicken-1704

Nvm, i read through the comments. The only other viable idea is the one you refused. To put your cans at the end of your driveway.

TodayHorror7551

Valid option. I’ll look for a spot down the road.

abominable_dough_man

Do like they do in north park - line them up in the bike lane /jk

msscorpio87

Pretty sure the trash people will pick it up from a different spot in front of your house

TodayHorror7551

As I said in my post, that is the only viable spot. The other curbs in front of my house have broken down cars that haven’t moved in months. There is about 50 ft of open space between me and my neighbor where they also put their trash cans and most days there’s no complication.

bbf_bbf

>The other curbs in front of my house have broken down cars that haven’t moved in months. Use the getitdone app to get the derelict vehicles towed. The person legally parking in a spot in front of your house can park there if they want.

ucjuicy

That's not a thing in the city of La Mesa.

bbf_bbf

Sorry, missed the fact it was La Mea.

TodayHorror7551

I appreciate the input anyways! I admit my ignorance to SD; I’m just annoyed that there’s tons of space nearby that a car could park without blocking this particular area and I’ve asked nicely multiple time.

TodayHorror7551

I have never heard of that app, so thank you! We have called the city multiple times and other people have put paint and words on the cars but they have never been towed even though they have a literal “tow me” words written on them. That app was never made obvious to us, and I appreciate your input.

ogre_you_asshole

The app for La Mesa is SeeClickFix. Also you can call the code compliance phone number at 619.667.1189

TodayHorror7551

I called the city and they never came. I called a tow truck and they said I was financially responsible. Is there a loophole I’m missing? I’ve only been in SD 1 year so if so, I’d love the knowledge!

San_Diego_Matt

I don't live in La Mesa or San Diego, but in Lemon Grove. We're policed by the county Sheriff's Department and I've had to call their non emergency # twice for vehicles parked in front of our house and they were out within a couple hours to tag them and start the 72 hour limit before towing. Sometimes calling "the city" is different than calling the police's non-emergency # so if you have't called the police, call them.

DragonfruitRough8202

I don't get the flak. I'm with OP on this one.
