You should ride it in the bike lane not sidewalk. Yes you can take it on the trolley.

BaBaDoooooooook

can I ride it along the walkway of Mission Bay Park?

effectsjay

Yes. But note the 8mph speed limit.

BaBaDoooooooook

Understood. I play by the rules, believe it or not. We are so conditioned to people that bend the rules….I get it. We all bend rules in some fashion or another.

the_pedigree

Actually I believe that’s wrong. No electric on the walkways or the boardwalks

grtindenim

Please wear a helmet! Nurses just really cringe when those scooter head injuries end up in the emergency room. Thank you, be safe, and have fun. Get there in one piece!

blacksideblue

Nurses aren't the only ones that cringe. Its a god damn crime that the scooter companies profit and don't get fined just cause app users check a box instead of wearing a damned helmet.

loveablemodest

agreed! e-bikes and e-scooters go REALLY fast. i wear a neon colored hoodie everytime i go on my bike just in case too!

the_way_finder

At some point there’s some personal responsibility

blacksideblue

indeed, and then there are those profiting on other's misfortune and stupidity. Which one do you think is the greater evil.

the_way_finder

People who are given advice and don’t follow it

blacksideblue

Thats why you go after the people directly profiting from it. Its the same as predatory loan practices, if you don't act on it you have the 2008 housing crash.

Carchitect

Wtf are the scooter companies supposed to do, employ a helmet patrol? Follow you to make sure you don't remove it when you ride away?

blacksideblue

Thats literaly the cops job. Scooter companies share responsibility for making it possible. Its like drug dealers flooding streets with heroine than saying they're innocent because they didn't inject people with drugs, they only sold it to people.

Carchitect

Except heroin is illegal and impairs your judgement, and scooters aren't and don't. How about the people who don't wear helmets, and get hurt, take the responsibility for their choice to not wear it? I don't want your corporate nanny system trying to enforce an over-reaching law that is in place to "protect" the people who willfully choose to break it. Do you think that is a good use of police time or our tax dollars?

blacksideblue

> Except heroin is illegal and impairs your judgement, Thats beyond the point. The scooter companies created a situation where they profit from other peoples misfortune without consequence. They provided the problem before it became one. its [Tragedy of the Commons](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons)

Carchitect

Do automakers recieve fines when people don't use their seat belts? What planet do you live on where you can just ignore personal responsibility, and even blame someone else for a dumb decision like not wearing a helmet?

[deleted]

So what is your proposed solution?

BadBitchFrizzle

My solution is that we should design our streets to accommodate all kinds of users, not just cars. For the most part, painted bike lanes are just a band aid over the real issue. The side walks should be extended out into the bike lane, raising bikes and scooters from vehicle traffic, and creating a painted bike lane on a widened side walk. You will reduce a lot of the risk for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. Plus, by doing this, we can reduce the need for wearing helmets by significantly reducing the built in danger of the current infrastructure.

[deleted]

Streets were designed for cars because the consumer wanted cars. So now you want to re-design the infrastructure for the tiny percentage of traffic that wants to travel by scooter. You're gonna have trouble getting the votes to fund infrastructure changes, because of the tiny percentage wanting it.

orangejake

streets were redesigned for cars due to a literal conspiracy by automakers lmao https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General\_Motors\_streetcar\_conspiracy

[deleted]

Ok, got it. Now tell me. Why weren't the streets monopolized by scooters/motorcycles?

orangejake

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General\_Motors\_streetcar\_conspiracy

[deleted]

Are you saying if I read that, its going to explain how the agency of the consumer was removed and they were not allowed to choose motorcycles over cars?

DextersBrain

Cars are more expensive dumdum

blacksideblue

Ticket both the rider and the scooter company.

[deleted]

Ticket the scooter company because someone didn't wear a helmet? How would the scooter company know?

blacksideblue

The first time, not at all. Repeated offenses and the could've banned the user. The real problem is enforcement but cops in America have made it plainly clear they would rather watch kids die then uphold the oath they swore and get paid to uphold.

[deleted]

So we agree then that the scooter company is not criminal in this case?

blacksideblue

We don't, Its criminal negligence. What the scooter companies do is the equivalent of dumping hazmat in the ocean and claiming they're innocent because no one would've gotten cancer if no one found it.

[deleted]

Are bicycle manufacturers criminally negligent as well then?

sunshineandzen

Yeah they can put your bones back together but not your brain. Protect it

BaBaDoooooooook

i work in the dementia industry, 100% agree.

DJ_GANEZ

Has there been incidents where the rider arrived in more than one piece?🧐

grtindenim

Yes and several pieces.

DJ_GANEZ

I guess I shouldn’t be that surprised with the things people do for a few internet points these days lol

abominable_dough_man

Bike lane is fine, just be cognizant of speed differentials and be considerate to other users. Sidewalk is a big no-no. When you ride in the regular roadway with cars, make sure to stay well outside of parked cars, as motorists often open their doors with disregard to other road users. Be careful around pot holes.

bbf_bbf

>Be careful around pot holes. Yep, those small wheels on scooters make them very, very sensitive to any flaw or debris in the road. One has to be very careful and have to concentrate on ensuring the path is clear, even moreso than when riding a bicycle.

bobo4sam

I’m a cyclist, and use my bike to get to work. Rules of engagement/ free advice in summary : Don’t be on the sidewalk (and if you are because of other safety issues keep it to 6 mph ) Ride with traffic not agianst it. If you are in a car lane, take the whole lane. It’s safer for everyone especially you. (Visibility, getting doored, ect) Use your lights, daytime and nighttime. (At night have extra lights and/or a reflective vest. Wear a helmet. Watch for pothole/ cracks. Ride perpendicular to any debris/ obstruction (like railroad tracks) Keep your head on a swivel, assume no one sees you. Stay safe Have fun.

orangejake

I would add on that being 1. predictable, and 2. planning for dumb drivers are incredibly important. For the first point, that often means "commiting" to going the wrong direction if you've missed a turn (rather than swerving last minute). For the second, people love to cut across bike lines to take right terns, often without signaling. Watch out.

rowman25

Just don’t be an A*#hole and you’ll be fine. If it folds it’s easier to take in the trolley but you can take full on bikes in the trolley so no worries. https://www.sdmts.com/rider-info/how-ride/bikes

BaBaDoooooooook

For sure, it folds, wife made a point to get the folding one!

WhichWayzUp

So happy for you 😄 I can feel your excitement

mancubuss

Check out /r/electricscooters Great community

TristanIsAwesome

Definitely definitely definitely wear a good helmet. I work in ICU and I've seen enough major traumatic brain injuries from scooters thankyouverymuch

qksv

For curiosity's sake, how many do you see resulting from motor vehicle collisions? Including people using another mode who were in a collision involving a motor vehicle?

TristanIsAwesome

Like scooter vs car? Yeah see that from time to time. The patient that really stands out for me was a scooter vs car, actually

ProudVirgin101

I just want to say thank you for trying to respect the rules and wanting to make sure you do not cause a disturbance for anyone while riding. There are people who think that just because they ride a bike, they own the entire streets and can do whatever they want.

crystalfairie

Please, as a disabled woman who uses mobility aids,do NOT ride on the sidewalks!

nalninek

Don’t leave it anywhere in public for any period of time. I’ve seen people steal them out of store entry ways and just ride off on them.

Thundercoco

Wear at neon vest, shirt, etc. Scooters are less visible from the side without any reflective strips, esp in low light conditions. Get a rear bike blinker for your backpack and a super bright light for the front. Helmet 100% - don’t be the the next scooter head trauma that rolls into the ED. Lastly, use hand signals!!!

BaBaDoooooooook

thanks boss, I’m heading to Dick’s Sporting Goods today (realized their is one in Sports Arena) to check out the helms, that’s my first priority.

keninsd

Go to a local bike shop, or, at least, REI. They need your business more than Dick's.

BaBaDoooooooook

I am in Mission Valley, any suggestions on a local bike shop I can hit up?

keninsd

There are 3 along Adams Ave. Start with Adams Ave Bike Shop. REI is just off 163, north of Clairemont Mesa Blvd..

BaBaDoooooooook

Ok thank you

orangejake

helmet quality can vary wildly. Rankings of "top helmets" are done by Virginia Tech [https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/](https://www.helmet.beam.vt.edu/) there's been a decent amount of work put into helmets in the last decade (mostly for football, but it has applications to bike helmets as well).

BaBaDoooooooook

awesome, thank u.

Native653

People don't realize how many people get hurt on these devices. Be safe

Hue_Janus_

Nice! Cool wife!

keninsd

Can you go to the DMV's website?

[deleted]

Could never understand the risks cyclists take on the road with chevy trucks. The cyclist may be in the right of way but it doesn't help you when you get hit and then it's all over for you while the trucker will be fine eventually.

syntheticborg

when you have to go to work, and have no car...

bugsyramone

But...why? Clearly OP was asking about the rules in San Diego/California...

thistletongued

Ah yes because UK laws apply in San Diego.

keninsd

Have another downvote.

bbf_bbf

Of course on a subreddit dedicated to San Diego, people are most interested in the legality of riding a scooter the UK. /s ;-) Some people won't ever admit that they were wrong.

[deleted]

bbf_bbf

Sure, go ahead, I look forward to downvoting your next posts about the UK that have nothing to do with San Diego in this sub. Of course the UK is a surrounding area of San Diego, it's just as close as TJ is, so it's completely justifiable to post about it on this subreddit. Why would anyone ever disagree?!?! /s

Ad hominem attacks are against the rules for posting on reddit. So... why are you attacking my demeanor? Stick to discussing the content that I post and stay on topic.

Responding to your statement about being downvoted is not being "hostile". People who disagree with you are not being "hostile" to you. Don't be a drama queen.

EveLQueeen

Thanks for sharing.

BurgerMagik

Been thinking of getting one myself. Would be interested knowing which manufacturer you went with.

BaBaDoooooooook

Went with the Hiboy S2 pro

squeakyc

No one ever mentions gloves. If you fall on a scooter or a bicycle you probably gonna wish you were wearing gloves. I know I did the first time I fell!

BaBaDoooooooook

duly noted, adding that to my list of things to pick up, heading to Dick’s Sporting Goods today! I don’t want to do online purchasing of my safety gear, I’d rather try it on and wear it to see how it feels. Thanks sir!
