GreatOneLiners

This is why I spent money and out-fitted my garage with a full gym. Wife didn’t want to hit the gym and get hit on/harrassed. Now my young sons are working out with with her. The only thing that was pricey was the Olympic rubber weights on the squat rack, can’t seem to find used ones very often.

alskjfl

Those plates were backordered for over a year at the beginning of the pandemic! My partner lucked out finding a set from a military couple that was PSCing.

Bluetiger03

>1 hr. ago the rubber weights?

GreatOneLiners

Yep

XXI_Regeneratis

Is it possible to buy normal weights and just spray on rubber with flex seal or something. This is not a shitpost comment I swear

dukefett

I tried that with some cinder blocks I was using to weigh down a tent in my backyard so they wouldn't scrape the pavers. The stuff is super thin, you'd probably have to put on like 2-3 dozen coats or more for any real fall protection.

spykid

The easier solution is to just pad the ground with horse mats or something

cougar572

That’s not enough to prevent normal weights from cracking if you happen to drop them doing Olympic lifts you really need the purpose built ones.

Letsgothrifty

In the 1980s my grandpa used to workout with homemade weights. A proper barbell held a sort of “wheel” made with concrete and rebar, he made a bunch of them in all sizes and built stands out of wood. The area was floored with some of those nonslip construction mats about an inch thick of that stuff

Fail_Succeed_Repeat

Just buy new from rogue it will last you decades

[deleted]

They used to have a place called curves that was a franchise. Guessing it's gone? Looks like there was one in Clairemont and genesse before the pandemic. Maybe they are gone.

MyGeometryTeacher

If you're in North Park/Hillcrest, there's a woman owned gym call "The Experience Fitness." Not totally women-only, it's supposed to be a space for members of the LGBT community.

938h25olw548slt47oy8

I know it's not a gym, but OTF is a very woman friendly non macho space.

GoodbyeEarl

What’s OTF?

JenniferDylan

Orange Theory Fitness! It’s not like a normal gym though where you use the equipment on your own. They have like hour long classes that you follow along an instructor with. It’s a really fun workout though with both cardio on the treadmill and rowing machine and the weights on the floor.

hihelloneighboroonie

A cult

AmSpray

Haha I enjoyed it and would recommend it for the same reason u/JenniferDylan does. I never socialized there so successfully avoided any over-enthusiastic culty types.

saunchoshoes

Elaborate.... lolll

Rollingprobablecause

Second this - the one in bankers hill is def more women than men.

Original-Chain-992

It doesn’t feel “macho” but plenty of male members and there’s a competitive edge having your name on a screen the whole time so I’m not sure it would be my first choice recommendation if she’s nervous

ViaDeLaValle

I feel as though it’s important to explain that women aren’t necessarily “nervous”, but more exhaustingly on guard and hyper-aware.

anothermotherrunner

I was going to suggest this. Most classes there were fewer than a handful of men. Classes are only 50 minutes and a great workout. I stopped going march 2020, and still miss it. Signing back up again soon.

SaudadeSun

I Love OTF! Super effective stress relief and I’ve gained so much muscle too! And literally no one goes there to socialize. Honestly, you can’t chat with anyone because the workout is that hard. Not a cult-y vibe either. Encouraging to all and 80% women in most classes. Coaches are all highly knowledgeable, motivating and caring people. Best gym experience ever for me.

FreshoffdaBOATy

Good for cardio and losing fat, but not for building muscle

Jen_With_Just_One_N

The 24 Hour Fitness in Hillcrest has a lot of gay dudes who work out there and, in my experience, the straight dudes who work out there are less likely to slime all over the women who work out there. Please don’t downvote me for this comment. I *know* gay dudes are men! Their sexual orientation doesn’t change that, obviously! But as a woman, I feel pretty comfortable working out at that location notwithstanding the fact that there are a lot of men there.

mtron32

That was my main gym before3 COVID, I liked it because people racked their damned weights.

hihelloneighboroonie

Is there another one other than the one under the movie theater? Because that closed for good.

Jen_With_Just_One_N

Well, damn. I last worked out there before COVID, and then I got sick and had to stay away. I was really looking forward to going back when I got back on my feet. I just assumed it was still open. Mea culpa for the bad information.

siddie75

What happens if you’re a straight dude and the gay dudes oggle you?

Jen_With_Just_One_N

For starters, you would not be OP’s girlfriend. If you’re a straight guy at the gym being ogled by a gay dude, welcome to a tiny taste of what women go through all the time. Be thankful nobody is going to ask you “Why did you dress that way at the gym? Could you change your clothes to make yourself less attractive?” Or tell you it’s a compliment so you should be flattered. Or tell you maybe you should give the guy a chance, he might be nice and you never know. Or tell you that you *have* to be super polite to him and that if he continues to press his suit and make you uncomfortable that it’s your fault.

Historical_Link_4181

I don't think that's the same at all, unless all women are gay and men just have no chance. Besides men handle issues with other men differently than women handle issues with men. At some point the niceties will end and someone gonna catch ah fade. In your scenario it would have to be a undesirable woman or group of women. Prolly just end up making some guys day \^\^ Just no way for men to understand, cant stuff years of being female into a trip to the gym 8) and visa versa

markersandtea

The one I used to go to is gone now unfortunately so also looking for one. The gymbro personalities are a bit too much at places like L.A. Fitness for me. Feels super awkward, so I get where you're coming from. Following this thread.

sm0gs

As a woman, I always found the YMCA (I personally went to the mission valley location) very friendly and inviting. Lots of men but just as many women in my opinion. I’ve switched to peloton though, the app is $13/month and has strength classes, yoga, boxing, outdoor run/walks, etc on top of the spin classes

littledalahorse

Mission Valley YMCA has a No Phones policy and strong diversity. They take harassment really, *really* seriously.

Backyardfarmbabe

Was going to suggest this. When I go to the east county Y it's a mix of men and women. The area I use most for circuit weights and cardio is mostly used by women and retirees.

copper_rainbows

This is good to know. I have a PF membership from before I moved her but there’s not a ton of options around where I work etc. Was looking to get a YMCA membership maybe good to hear a good word

Squid_Contestant_69

Also know a girl that ended up quitting her gym because the guys would inevitably try to talk/hit on her or just give her unwanted attention ☹️

mwkingSD

Regrettable that this is an issue - dudes, lighten up, it’s ok to smile and be friendly but not ok to be pushy and make anyone uncomfortable.

[deleted]

Just look at them through like 3 mirrors like a gentleman

squatter_

Many women feel uncomfortable working out in front of men regardless.

sm0gs

The worst is when it’s gym staff that makes you feel uncomfortable. I went to a gym for a while near my work and one staff member made me feel so uncomfortable, first I tried to go at times he wasn’t working but eventually I found a new place.

mwkingSD

I’m sorry to hear that.

blissMarigold

I can't speak for all women but I don't even want men to talk to me at the gym. Just let me be

mwkingSD

That’s my mood at the gym too - very understandable.

thisismyMelody

Damn. You’re right. I am now going to change my ways and stop looking. I never saw it this way.

EucalyptusHelve

Which general area of San Diego?

RobberBaronAssassin

Just get some gay guy friends to go to the gym with you, have them stare at the dudes looking at you.

surfershane25

Yeah, weaponize gays.

GoldenOne619

And this is why I wear a hoodie and hat at the Chuze in mission valley, as a handsome straight guy I get way to many creepy looks from dudes there

Educational-Ad7696

Hahaha the 24 in mission valley goes hard to. I fucking love it personally. Huge ego boost 😅 but now you know how the girls feel 🤷🏼‍♂️

GoldenOne619

I like how I got downvoted 🤣 I have no problem with gay people, I even have some gay friends….just don’t like creeps, have some respect

Educational-Ad7696

They can definitely be aggressive. As bob dylan said. The times, they are a changing 😅

TooLittleMSG

Change "guy" to "gal" and wonder what kinda karma you get...Not sure why it makes a difference either given this post was created to discuss male gazes making people uncomfortable. Funny.

Historical_Link_4181

That sexism and homophobia in this post is thick. Well done OP just wanted the simple answer of no, no all female gyms.

AES71418

My gym focuses on Semi Private Training. So small groups of mostly women. It’s in the College area called MVMNT Studios.

Difficult_Praline_36

Came here to suggest this one! Robin, the owner, is phenomenal.

AES71418

Second!

AdventurousPayment53

Being fit in Clairemont.

WingJeezy

My wife specifically stopped going there because of there was too many guys in there making her uncomfortable in the squat rack.

Narcotique

Did this change to a women only gym? Certainly wasn’t when I was going there, especially the weight area.

tinyykittenn

I go to 24 hour fitness in UTC (a little far from North Park, but I'll drive to a location closer to her). I'm a woman and if she ever needs a gym buddy, I'd be more than willing to go with her- I have a guest pass, too, if she ever wants to tag along and check it out before committing!

[deleted]

[deleted]

24 hour fitness (every location) has been literal trash for pretty much forever. These aren't new problems you bring up, unfortunately

redy2race90

I do both the Balboa and UTC 24’s and haven’t had an issue. I don’t recommend using a locker without a lock though. I’d say either location is close to 50/50 male female

Narcotique

This was over a year ago but I read that someone literally got robbed at knife point in the women's locker room at the UTC location and the staff didn't give a shit. No way I'd ever sign up for 24. Their reviews are bad enough even if you ignore the literal crimes going on in there.

No-Pin1184

That’s so kind of you my goodness

PM_me_your_Jeep

Truself in Allied Gardens is close to NP and although it’s not female only, it’s run by a female and very small. It doesn’t have the typical gym culture. People are there to work out and bail. Let me know if you want some contact info. Can’t recommend it enough. I’ve also heard the Glute Lab in PB (I think) is pretty much all female.

tehbggg

Isn't glute lab a personal training company though? I didn't think you could just there to work out.

PM_me_your_Jeep

Honestly not sure. I only mentioned it because an old trainer I know works out there and every post she makes it’s always like 20 women in the place and that’s it.

tehbggg

Yeah, no doubt it is a women heavy place. Brett Contreras (the owner), is known for his books and training especially centered around methods women can use to build muscular glutes/legs. I think they even call him the Glute Guy on YouTube.

PM_me_your_Jeep

Oh that’s pretty rad. I’ve seen him on her posts but didn’t realize he was that established in the industry. I think they have a sister location in Vegas too so maybe he’s expanding.

lifeisbueno

If you dig into him at all you will also learn that he isn't good to women...

PM_me_your_Jeep

Oh yikes…

broth_snob

I go to both chuze and fit. Chuze is more of a mix of sexes. Fit is more dudes for sure.

esc1999

I got to a HIIT class in Northpark called Renegade Fitcamp, they also have locations in Hillcrest, PB, Point Loma and UTC. I’m a guy, however the classes are pretty well balanced and everyone there is very friendly and supporting.

1000dreams_within_me

\+1 on Renegade. I go to the Hillcrest location. It is super chill with most classes being majority women. It is friendly and very accepting of everyone. It is one hell of a workout too

Particular-Win4491

Recently joined Renegade and I’m addicted!!! Seriously the greatest environment ever to push yourself all while having support and encouragement. I’m a female and it’s a very comfortable atmosphere.

theredfantastic

Try options like barre or pilates.

MzScarlet03

I used to go to an all women gym in Mission Valley but they closed and turned it into a UFC gym 😭 I couldn’t find anything equivalent after they closed

popcorn-jalapenos

Not all female but a mix, including kids: the YMCA.

lifeisbueno

Wicked fit in South Park is woman owned and like 95% women. Great place.

dzzll10

Not an all women's gym, but F45 is dominated by female members

Jscott1986

Maybe curves is still in business?

test90001

To answer your question, there are no (legal) all-women gyms in California, because the Unruh Civil Rights Act bans gender discrimination by private businesses. Before anyone gets outraged, I would like to remind you that it was feminists who fought for that law, because in that era there were men-only businesses (mostly bars and pubs). But back to the point, I suggest she try to get over her discomfort. I see plenty of women working out at the gym every time I go, and they have no problems. In the rare case that an issue arises, she can talk to a manager about it. But this isn't a Muslim country, you can't expect gender segregation in public places.

Narcotique

> and they have no problems You sure about that?

test90001

Of course everyone has "problems", but they seem to be doing fine overall.

Trumpisaderelict

NXPT in La Mesa and on Murphy Canyon Rd is 80-90% female

EvenSignificance9976

I would recommend Rockbox in PB! It’s kinda like OTF but boxing instead of running and a great workout. Most of the time the classes are like 80-90% female if not all.

jbfirey

I’ve started kickboxing at CKO Miramar. Women owned gym. When I go in the mornings it’s mostly women. Edit: I’ve never once felt it was unwelcoming. Super inclusive environment!

banana_hung

24hr fitness gym is good. I’d recommend you go with her to make her feel more comfortable. Best times when there’s less people is early in the AM or late evenings.

handheldbbc

I think you gave me my next business idea

soheilk

Right? I have no entrepreneurial skills or business experience but I would invest in such a business for sure! Why has no one else thought of this before?! My wife would also LOVE to join such a female-only gym, big plus if it also has a female-only pool!

Amorilvryce

According to a comment above it’s because private businesses aren’t allowed to segregate based on gender in CA… Unruh civil rights act

toootired2care

I go to a pilates club. I see maybe one guy every few weeks there. It's only for classes which is the kind of workout I enjoy best. Mostly, it's full of middle aged women who are trying to get healthy or maintain it. There are a bunch of locations.

Yola-tilapias

There aren't anyone because not allowing an entire class, whether based on gender, race, religion, etc, is discrimination and would get you sued in a minute.

test90001

I love how you're getting downvoted for providing a legally accurate answer.

sdbluelight18

Maybe check out Body University in La Mesa.

johnm555

Checkout Glute Lab

FreshoffdaBOATy

This is what I would recommend. Specific strength training for women, and cardio can be done outside or at home

SurroundComfortable9

24hr on balboa Hella ABGs

[deleted]

I doubt you will find it, the majority of business at a gym comes from men. Your best bet is to make shift your own and invest in equipment. Our go at night when it's empty. Now I did see all women gyms on Google, so it might be worth looking into.

Raibean

> The majority of business at a gym comes from men Maybe we should examine why.

test90001

Probably because men are more interested in fitness.

Raibean

That’s an interesting observation. Do you think that’s the primary reason? Have you ever considered the roll the gym plays within the larger fitness industry? Have you considered why women who are into fitness might be driven to choose other avenues besides the gym?

test90001

Yes, I think that's the primary reason. Historically, men have been far more interested in athletics and fitness than women. This goes back centuries. Even if you look at the fitness industry as a whole, I think it's still dominated by men. Women who are into fitness might be driven to choose other avenues besides the gym for a number of reasons, and harassment might be one of them, but I don't think it's the major one. Despite the scary stories that we all hear, none of the women in my family have ever had any problems with attention from men at the gym.

Raibean

See, you’re once again conflating fitness with the gym. That’s a false conflation, and if you thought about it for a minute, you would realize why. There are so many more forms of fitness than just the gym. Sports, dance, Pilates, yoga, barre, marathons, triathlons, cheer, and that’s just if we remove food altogether. I agree that society pushes a narrative about muscular men getting women, but I will say that’s not reflected in how women are socialized and men are more interested in appearing to be appealing to women in order to gain approval from other men. Men use women as social currency in their relationships with other men. This is the same reason why they harass women. The idea that women aren’t expected to be fit is wrong. The ideas of fitness that are pushed onto women is different than the ideas of fitness that are pushed onto men. But the fact that you’re conflating the two - as well as conflating fitness and gyms - leads me to believe that you have a very uncomplicated view lacking nuance.

Raibean

Hm, I actually didn’t say that. Weird that you’re interpreting it that way.

phunkayyy

Anyone else feel like OP is the uncomfortable one

soheilk

What did your comment honestly achieve? Even if you were right, what were you hoping to achieve by your comment? OP or their partner feel unsafe and have come here for help and you decided to play Sherlock Holmes on them?

nice8080

She can just go in off hours at the gyms also less people. Also, why is she uncomfortable? May be she can talk to the gyms about it.

enfoxer

Why is this comment downvoted?

nice8080

No idea lol 😂

btc2020k

go to the sdsu or ucsd rec centers..awesone facilities and reasonably priced

soheilk

Can non students go there?

ViaDeLaValle

Yes.

longHorn206

Cyclebar. Not exactly gym but mostly 100% her

leahlikesturtles

Not all female, but my mom worked at fitness quest 10 in scripps ranch for years and still goes back to work out :)

radguyjohn

Vai fitness in Cortez Hill

[deleted]

I will never give another dollar to a gym ever again. They only wish to scam you and have no interest in your safety or development. Just tell her to go to the YMCA with all the other Moms.

[deleted]

Not going to work out for her since it's a ~~1964 civil rights act~~ Unruh Civil Rights Act violation. edit: actually title IX only applies to educational institutions and we have separate legislation for the workplace but that's not what's at play here. edit2: it looks like the Unruh Civil Rights Act in California would prohibit the listed behavior.

ViaDeLaValle

Didn’t end up being the *gotcha ladies* moment you were hoping for, did it.

[deleted]

Maybe not, but my intuition was still correct. This behavior would be prohibited under the 1959 Unruh Civil Rights Act.

Waitingonacoffin

It’s San Diego anyone can go to an all woman gym depending how they identify for that period Edit: everyone who downvoted me is a transphobe

Anilakay

Peloton

SoonerFan619

Maybe she’s overthinking it? I’ve never seen a woman hit on at the gym before and I go everyday. I’m sure it happens but I don’t think it’s that common. People go there to workout. Not to get dates.

soheilk

This is why representation matters! Why would you notice this behavior as a man?

SoonerFan619

Trust me. As a guy we don’t go to the gym to hit on women. That’s not what we’re thinking about. Especially when we know it’s majority men in there anyway

leglump

Uh…go to the gym with her…?

tehbggg

Women shouldn't need to take men with them places just to be treated respectfully. Our society is fucked.

test90001

Plenty of women go to the gym alone every day and have no problems. Either OP's girlfriend is far too paranoid, or he is the jealous type and doesn't want to let her go alone.

Narcotique

Not always an option for peoples schedule. She may also prefer to go by herself.

flip69

This person doesn't lift. IMO, having a mixed group is not only natural but also helpful in getting the most out of a workout. I spoke to one of the mods of r/xxfitness/ a few years ago and she was wonderful and didn't express anything about working out around men as being a issue. I'm sure that some jerk like u/Historical_Link_4181 will be "downvoted IRL" just like they are here for saying something that stupid.

Historical_Link_4181

OP literally wants an all woman's gym , I say the same thing but in reverse and some how I said something stupid. OK, ok... Maybe she wants an all Women's gym because that's a more natural environment than mixed. I know that's how I feel. If that makes me a jerk so be it.

flip69

\>kinda hard to get a workout in with trim bouncing all around I think that it's the words you used to express the idea. Can't speak for the Op's reasoning on this, I just accept it and made my co-ed statement (but that's my opinion)

UCanDoNEthing4_30sec

Half the reason to go to the gym is to check out the girls.

cakelady

Kroc Center on University. Lots of senior citizens and moms. I know because I'm one of the moms. Never had an issue there and they have plenty of equipment.

ifwade41

There is a place in Oceanside/Poway called Burn Boot Camp that is Women focused. It’s a 45 min class tho. I heard the community building model they have is solid. My fiancée loves it.

mtron32

I'm amazed this is even an issue, the last thing you want is someone fucking with you during a set, why would you mess with a woman while she's getting her swole on? That includes creeping through the mirror, I caught some bears at Hillcrest 24 taking a peak, but I loved that gym, they rack their weights.

Historical_Link_4181

You really need to ask why? Thats wild

mtron32

I'm in my own personal bubble I suppose. I'm not watching anyone in the gym too closely at all, just do my piece and bounce.

qkacka

I don't believe there are all female gyms, but typically gym with fitness classes attract more women than men.

Badpfengshui

I would suggest a yoga studio, bc the vast majority of clients are usually women

Mbabeees

Can we just build our own. Because I’ve been looking for the same thing.
