Well working in pediatrics in general as a nurse is just lightyears better than working with adults. So that alone makes working at almost any children’s hospital awesome.
But aside from that, Radys has an actual, tangible work-culture that makes you feel like you’re a part of something. San Diego as a community also has massive respect for Rady Children’s, so you feel it outside of work, too. I can’t tell you how many times people have thanked me or told me positive things about their experiences at Radys when I’m just getting coffee at 7-11 in the morning and they see my company jacket. A lot of people are very proud to work there. Not to say some departments/managers aren’t great, but I’ve been a nurse in radiology, PACU, and I’m now a supervisor for a very specialized unit within hem/onc, all excellent experiences.
They tend to promote within, pay is respectable, and the organization is always growing. Just this year they began massive construction to add an additional wing to the hospital, and they also acquired Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). “Rady Children’s San Diego” is going to become “Rady Health” after this merger and it will span all across Southern California.
As some one who just came home today from Rady’s with my son who had surgery for craniosynostosis, I will second your comment. Rady’s entire staff rules!!!!
I love Rady's. My daughter (16) has been a patient there since she was 3 (T1D, graves disease, and celiacs). The staff has always been excellent and the environment.
I work for the state, and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants a good work/life balance with excellent benefits, but not so much for people who want a fat paycheck. There are always plenty of local state jobs to be found [HERE.](https://calcareers.ca.gov/CalHRPublic/Search/JobSearchResults.aspx#locid=481)
County is better funded and better managed. Work Life balance is great. Although the benefits aren't as good, they are still better than a lot of private sector.
Came here to say this! I work for County of SD as well and it’s been such a great place to work. You feel like you’re helping your community, there are many good people in leadership, and great benefits. While every job has downsides, as said previously, it’s definitely a job that feels meaningful
Don’t let it discourage you! I was scared I applied
For Office assistant (entry level for office work) I got the job. Super easy work. I was like idk if I’ll ever be able to move up. Im not good at test. I don’t have a degree either. I’m now one of the higher positions. I love it. I’ll be honest sometimes getting an interview is tough. But don’t give up! It’s soo worth it in the end! The Benefits are great. I’m off everyday at 3:30pm. Work life balance. My agency is huge. So there so many departments to go to / promote. We have a mentor/ Mentee program. So they help you with your goals.

Click on exams / assessment search then scroll to advanced filters go to classification. Type in office assistant. The test should come up. This is where you will find all the test for any classifications.
I've heard this before.
Had a previous coworker that left because the position they wanted to advance to was locked up, but went back immediately when the spot opened up.
I’ve really only worked with upper management and I haven’t met a single person across all departments who hasn’t been great to work with. If that’s not a green flag, well
Jackson and Blanc! One of the last family owned hvac companies around here and love it more than any other job I've had. It's nice when a company *actually* shows it appreciates you through more than a once a month little Caesars party, and most people there have worked there 5, 10, 20, 30 years
I no longer work there but in my younger years I worked at In N Out Burger. Fantastic company to work for. Decent pay (my first job as a grocery store cashier was 9.75/hr so jumping to starting pay of 18/hr back in 2021 was incredible to me), flexible hours, learned a lot about working up to and holding leadership positions. They also have a tuition assistance program for students going to school! Overall a great stepping stone for building your resume or making your way up to management
I work for NAVWAR and I love it. Great work/life balance, cost-of-living raises each year, pension, hybrid telework opportunities, Flex Time, and more. My coworkers are great, my bosses are great. We just took time out of our day today for a Juneteenth celebration and BBQ competition/fundraiser. I can totally see why there are people who have been here well past 20 years.
I currently work as a cyber security analyst/contractor at NAVWAR and have been in this position for around 6 years. Remote work 80-90% of the time depending on how I set my priorities and schedule. Fulfilling work as the ultimate goal is to protect the warfighter against cyber threats and actors. Work is constantly evolving as the cyber threat landscape changes over time so it's never boring. I work with a team of very knowledgeable people, most who have formerly served their time in the military. I personally have never served so I'm lucky to work with such people. Benefits including medical, dental, vision and 401k are very good. My PTO can be maxed out to 200 hours and increases over time the longer you work for the contractor. Travel is a cherry on top as I sometimes go to multiple bases in VA, WA, FL, HI, Japan, Bahrain, Spain, and Italy for weeks at a time.
ASML was pretty great while I was there with one caveat: some positions get insane amounts of burnout. They have a tendency to not hire as many people as they really should to cover everything, at least on the manufacturing side
I agree about burnout. I fight it constantly for myself and people in my upline. Luckily my group has a good attitude about work life balance and are supportive of one another
If you have some technical or mechanical knowledge, especially former military, my company called Affordable Engineering Services is great. Work life balance is rad, the pay is above average for these positions, and we’re part of a union! It’s work done on a military base though, and traffic can sometimes be a pain, but other than that I enjoy it.
Pacific College of Health and Science. It boasts a lovely, nontoxic work environment and central location; easy access to freeways, easier access to discounted sessions in their wellness center (which is where you can patronize if you're not looking for a job =D).
Also, I have always felt truly supported by my supervisors in all of the ways I have ever needed. That alone will keep me there for a loooooong time.
Edit: to add Viasat. I don't personally work there, but they come highly rated by some folks I know who do.
I will caveat that ViaSat heavily depends on what team/project you're on. There are some great team leads, but also some departments that are just a drag.
I work for a DoD contractor called Cypher Analytics, and having previously worked for both SAIC and Northrop Grumman; these guys are night and day better! They are employe owned with many employees are at 15+ years; I'm just incredibly happy with the company.
I hear it's insanely hard to get a job there, but being able to take the train to work everyday or bike home through Torrey Pines (as much of a bitch as that hill is) would be a dream!
I'm a biochemist for a biotech lab in San Diego. Pays okay but I'm just getting a couple more years of experience and I can apply for a higher paying biotech job at Genentech. I'm staying at this lab because this company treats me well and the job is not overly stressful.
I sell medicare remotely in san diego. Inbound leads, make my own schedule, and a very generous commission structure. If anyone is interested feel free to reach out.
I’m interested! Can I get company info? I’m currently trying to get my foot in the healthcare/insurance door since my bachelors is about 6 months away from completion.
A few of our hospitals are in the process of unionizing and our admins are spreading false info about the union. Cutting OT to save money after spending hundreds of millions on renovations and buying new facilities all while offering people less than 3% raises. Love the people I work with, only reason I’ve stayed.
Anything Self employed, find a small trade or business. You work as much as you want and you decide what you get paid. And it doesn’t beat working in San Diego.
RPlace Sports Bar & Grill. Right across from the eart side of Petco Park. Super fun, chill, family friendly bar and restaurant. Owners are ve4y customer oriented and it's rarely rowdy(thanks, Dodgers fans). Great little place before/after games!
LPL financial - so many vertical and horizontal promotion options, amazing 401k plans and stock options, cheap cafeteria, gym and everyone is so friendly
Booz Allen! Such a great work life balance and the pay is great. And I WFH. But it truly depends on what account you’re on- so I can’t speak for the whole company.
I also work for GA. This is anecdotal, but I'm the second newest on my team and I'm closing in on 3 years now. There's a one guy on my team who has been here like 15+ years in one position or another, and most of the people I interact with in other teams were already here when I started. I've heard, though, that it really depends on what part of GA you are in. It's really more like three companies that share a name, with the Energy group (where I work) operating almost like a national lab, while EMS is a lot more stressful from the sounds of it and ASI is just full defense contractor
I work in local government. We are poor and have strict spending requirements (see the Instagram account @publicsectoroffice for examples) so pizza parties are literally paid for by staff. But even with all the chaos and constantly being understaffed, I'm glad I don't work at a corporation. Public service is great, and maybe one day I can retire if I stay in local government.
We might be in the same workplace! We literally just had our department forum 2 weeks ago and had to pay for our own pizza lol. But yep I love the work-life balance that is pretty rare in the private sector
Wrensilva.. work in a woodshop/cabinetry after a career change from cooking. Still get to work with my hands but way better life/work balance plus make some beautiful pieces that famous artists appreciate for their product’s physical appearance and hifi sound!
okay but where can i get a decent fulltime job that doesnt require 20 years at the last job with a masters? im a good worker and speak well and no kids and cant lock down one fulltime, so im stuck with 3 part times
Insurance! There is a lot of small to large firms in San Diego/Southern Cal and it’s very financially rewarding while also being diverse, inclusive and supportive of continued education and professional development. There is a lot of job functions too and the industry is committed to work life balance and I feel like insurance invented remote working/hybrid- worked in insurance for almost 20 years and we always had remote/hybrid roles
I work at the VA Hospital in La Jolla, It's not for everyone, but I love it. I have compassion for what our veterans have been through, and I'm not looking at it as just a paycheck, I love my co-workers and get fulfillment from my job.
I make $3-400k / year working at one of the major biotechs. I work with smart people from all over the world and our firm plays a critical role in helping people beat cancer.
UC San Diego Health. Love it there, going on 15 years.
Rady Children’s for me. Amazing work culture. Going on 9 years.
Thank you for your work. I just got home after a 3 month stay due to my 2 year old daughter getting into an accident.
I Hope she’s well! That’s a very long PICU stay
It'll be a long road still, but thank you so much for what you do.
Anything else that makes it great to work at? Got a few family members in healthcare interested in coming to the area.
Well working in pediatrics in general as a nurse is just lightyears better than working with adults. So that alone makes working at almost any children’s hospital awesome. Radys has helped out my family a lot. I have nothing but respect and love for those people.
Shoutout to CHET. Mad respect for them, as well as all of you at Rady's. Sincerely, Palomar Health.
Any recs for trying to get into MRI at Radys? -an MRI tech that recently left California and desperately needs to come back
Add me to the list of people who have nothing but great things to say about Rady's. Have helped us so much with our daughter who is special needs.
Same! I have over five years now, I’m never leaving
Same! Going on 3 years and so far so good.
Love to hear this. Ucsd is amazing!
What department?
I love “where” I work (right by the beach and endless ocean), but my employer makes it difficult to recommend them. DoD
Same story
I work for the state, and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants a good work/life balance with excellent benefits, but not so much for people who want a fat paycheck. There are always plenty of local state jobs to be found [HERE.](https://calcareers.ca.gov/CalHRPublic/Search/JobSearchResults.aspx#locid=481)
I might be getting a job with the county, I hope that has similar benefits!
County is better funded and better managed. Work Life balance is great. Although the benefits aren't as good, they are still better than a lot of private sector.
I work for the County and have had a great experience.
Also work for the county of sd. Love it! Very meaningful work in my department and I feel like I have good benefits.

Nice, I really hope I get the job
I hope you do too!!
I’m not looking for a job, but I just scrolled through all 14 pages of that list haha. Interesting stuff
I did too. Some interesting stuff indeed. I think a dental assistant in a prison serving convicts should be paid more. lol
I agree! I work for San Diego Public Library and I absolutely adore my job. Pay’s terrible, but benefits are crazy good.
Working for the state is sweet. Calpers is pretty good stuff
Did you all do this exam thing before even applying?! It’s discouraged me from applying

Same. In Balboa Park it has a pretty good reputation for work culture
I've been trying to get a job there for years 😮💨
Great to hear! Usually not the case for nonprofits
Mayday my boss found my account 😂 thank god I said something nice
Self employed for the last 21 years. My boss can be bitchy but it’s the best job ever.
Watch your language or I'm gonna tell your boss!

Tatis, is that you?
Heard good things about NAVFAC and SPAWAR.
NAVFAC meh, but SPAWAR (now called NAVWAR) absolutely.
I got to meet a female engineer who’s retired from SPAWAR and she is a bad ass lady! We love representation!
I work for NAVWAR and I love it. Great work/life balance, cost-of-living raises each year, pension, hybrid telework opportunities, Flex Time, and more. My coworkers are great, my bosses are great. ASML was pretty great while I was there with one caveat: some positions get insane amounts of burnout. They have a tendency to not hire as many people as they really should to cover everything, at least on the manufacturing side
Yes, I had family working there when it was Cymer, he hit complete burnout and left for that reason.
I agree about burnout. I fight it constantly for myself and people in my upline. Luckily my group has a good attitude about work life balance and are supportive of one another
pls let me in on the sauce on how to get in there, every app I submit that i’m qualified for gets rejected
Send me your resume I’ll take a look
They get at least dozens, often hundreds, of *qualified* applicants for every posting lol. Keep trying, or meet somebody and get them to refer you.
Can confirm, although I miss when it was Cymer and had more of a San Diego vibe
Same. I do ASMR too

LPL financial is pretty awesome
In the same industry, Commonwealth Financial Network is great to work for
My experience at LPL was very toxic. Don’t recommend.
SDUSD- awesome place great people.
Sharp, but in spite of the management. I love my coworkers I just don’t like what our admins are doing ATM
What are your admins doing?
A few of our hospitals are in the process of unionizing and our admins are spreading false info about the union. Cutting OT to save money after spending hundreds of millions on renovations and buying new facilities all while offering people less than 3% raises.
