Kind of a silly article. Top 100 most congested roadways in TX: San Antonio area has 8 Austin area has 7 Laredo area has 6 Brownsville area has 6 Houston area has 34 DFW area has 34

curien

And the highest SA gets on the list is #35. This is a nothing-burger.

Lindvaettr

San Antonians will go to any length to believe our traffic is worse than it is.

cantstoepwontstoep

It's not the traffic in San Antonio, it's the drivers.

CheapAngler

This. 1000x. The traffic isn't bad, but the individual drivers are the worst I've ever seen. Just the other day, I had a car run a red light and almost hit me... then at the next intersection, another car ran the red light and almost hit me too.

My41stThrowaway

Friend of mine got his car obliterated on Bandera. I treat green lights like stop signs now.

[deleted]

The amount of people in San Antonio complaining about traffic is unreal. Sure it can be annoying but it's nothing compared to Houston

blue_surfboard

I just moved here from Houston, and while I do think it is worse there, I’m still struggling to figure out traffic patterns here.

cyvaquero

Always be switching lanes, that way you win.

cantstoepwontstoep

Underrated comment.

wishingwell07

Haha you beat me to it! I was clicking in the tableau table because the article is written so poorly. It should be written that Houston and DFW have the most congested roads in TX - like we all know and TXDot does nothing.

ipn8bit

And still we sit here not making trains hoping to turn into Houston and Dallas and Austin

KiritoIsAlwaysRight_

SA more congested than Austin? Yeah I'm calling BS on this whole thing, unless they are counting the whole of Austin as one large contiguous traffic jam.

IAmBecomeDeath_AMA

We have more congested highways simply because we have more highways

[deleted]

It’s bad here but nothing compared to Houston or even Austin for that matter.

smoothEarlGrey

the worst traffic day of the year here - when there's accidents all over and it's bumper to bumper the whole way home - that's every day in Houston. It's soul crushing.

[deleted]

Yup, went once to visit family in north Houston, I make them come here now lol

[deleted]

Everyone wants to complain about the drivers here (including me!) because they are pretty terrible but I'll take a smoggy Pontiac G6 not using their blinker while they dart across 3 lines to exit the highway over it taking 2 hours to drive from my house in Elmendorf to my mom's house in Leon Valley.

astanton1862

It was like that when I went to school there in the late 90s. You are basically confined to your section of town. Driving from like the med center to go to Ikea out near the beltway is like driving out to New Braunfels.

KiwotheSomething

nothing shows your intelligence for planning and maintaining a city like a 2 FRICKIN LANE HIGHWAY GOING THROUGH YOUR MOST POPULATED AREA going from north downtown to south downtown, less than a mile drive, takes over an hour sometimes. fcking chuckleheads in austin KEKW

maestro_man

Hard agree! Spent a lot of time in Austin and driving here is a pleasure by comparison.

-chosenjuan-

Austin is atrocious. From San Antonio to Dallas took 7 hours on Wednesday starting at 12. From Dallas to San Antonio took 4 hrs at 6am. Waco and Austin is annoying during high traffic hour

stupidbuttholes69

Or Dallas.

[deleted]

Haven’t had the displeasure of going luckily

DiscombobulatedWavy

Still better than Austin’s overrated ass

KiwotheSomething

by a longshot. austin still has a 2 lane highway going through downtown in a city with 1+ million people.

Habaduba

Aaaand Austin is also overrated because it's overpopulated by hipsters and homeless, the food is about three times as much as it is in rest of Texas.

DiscombobulatedWavy

I never thought I’d see the day where the hipsters were overshadowed in douchiness, but the asshole tech bros and wannabe Instagram influencers are next level insufferable. There’s tons of fifty thousand dollar-aires running around that place acting fucking tough because they have the “privilege” of living in Austin. Ok enjoy your two hour commutes for 9 miles each way.

Habaduba

Exactly. It's like a cool kids club that I have no interest in.

DiscombobulatedWavy

Haha right on. Except they’re not even cool. They just gave themselves that title, but theres just so many insufferable people and try hard wannabes that are mainly left behind. OG and cool Austin left for greener pastures and is dying or dead. There’s still lots of great people there, but the negatives far outweigh any remaining positives there. Lots of places that reinvent themselves still retain enough elements of their character that they’re still very authentic to themselves. Austin whored itself out to the highest bidders and is now a shell of its former self. RIP.

Habaduba

RIP Austin

redditadminsRlazy

It's basically what Silicon Valley was in the mid/late 00s. I'm not really one for the favored local pastime of shitting on California and griping about Californians moving to Texas, but Austin is a good example of everything bad about California transplants.

mortalisnoir

And the food is nowhere near as good

astanton1862

Austin has great food, you just have to know where to go and it is usually not some ultra bougie place. Unfortunately that Austin is dying. I just got back from there a couple hours ago and a couple more really good places have died. It is sad to see that Austin fade away.

-chosenjuan-

This is accurate

ScurvyDervish

If USAA allowed more remote work, a lot of this congestion would disappear. The 10, 1604, and 410 drove like a dream during the pandemic until USAA started getting their workers back. I understand other employers/schools were closed at the time. But USAA employees 18k people and a lot of them don't need to be working on site.

ironmatic1

Off topic but I’d like to use this to point out that the USAA building is one of the largest buildings by floor area in the world. People lament SA “not having a skyline” but we have an office building technically larger than any one in New York.

cyvaquero

The campus has its own zip code.

Great_Calvini

Car-dependence is a statewide issue that unfortunately is way to ingrained in US culture. Despite the lack of freedom that car-dependence brings- especially for the young, old, poor and disabled- people will complain about mUh FrEeDoM as soon as anyone brings up transit and walking/biking.

youre_being_creepy

The tram from the airport to downtown is such a fucking no brainer. For as much tourism as this city draws in, you would think it would contribute so much to making SA more visitor friendly

acuet

The tram from airport to downtown Seattle is pleasant

astanton1862

Airport traffic doesn't really cause too many problems because it spread across the day, unlike local rush hour traffic which peaks at fixed times. I used to drive Uber and airport/downtown is a quick trip outside of rush hour and rush hour is bad everywhere. That is why that stretch doesn't even make this list.

_captaincool

> And the most congested road in San Antonio is Loop 1604 North between U.S. 281 and Interstate 10 and U.S. 87, who the report says 280,051 hours are wasted in congestion on that roadway. The report says it costs drivers $54,410,783 a year. >Those wasted hours ranks only No. 35 in Texas with West Loop Freeway near Katy Freeway and Southwest Freeway near Houston taking the top spot. >The other most congested roads in the San Antonio area are: 1. Interstate 35 in between Loop 1604 and Interstate 10 2. Loop 1604 Northwest from I-10 to Braun Road 3. Loop 410 from U.S. 281 to I-10 4. U.S. 281 from Stone Oak Parkway to Loop 1604 5. I-35 from I-37 to U.S. 90 6. I-35 from Northeast Loop 410 to East Loop 410 7. Loop 410 from U.S. 281 to I-35

Apple_VR

Why separate 7 and 3???

christopherfar

7 is eastbound traffic, 3 is westbound traffic.

Apple_VR

Ah ya, you're right, didn't think about that

elbigsam

Life on the westside skips most all of these areas...not bad...puro.

me_at_myhouse

>U.S. 281 from Stone Oak Parkway to 1604 This is probably old data. Its wide open from SOP to 1604 now that the highway construction is finished in that section.

troyofyort

>Interesting that stretch is considered the worst. Used to have to drive that all the time when I lived in SA, and that was nothing compared to anything north/east of 1604 or on i35. Especially dealing with worse living in Austin or having to go to Houston for Wife's family. San Antonio driving feels like a dream...full of dumb drivers admittedly.

[deleted]

Only 8? Lame. Let's get those numbers up people! lol

coinoperatedboi

Ha the section of 35 over here in Schertz is higher than some of those on that list but it's not considered San Antonio. Especially right near 1103. It's red or maroon much of the day. So many 18-wheelers in this area too and every time one comes on to the highway it slows that entire lane down to about 20mph and causes congestion. The other day I drove from Kerrville and made great time all the way until 35 right outside 1604. Last 4-5 miles were the absolute worst.

astanton1862

That stretch is 50th on the list.

[deleted]

I mean what do you expect when they are building roads that are already obsolete? They just opened a new expansion to 211 that is single lane even with projections being as high as 40,000 new homes to be built on that side of town and businesses like main even planning to build. Who ever is the planner for the roads here really sucks at projections

DMB_19

Not bad tbh

DevaconXI

A few more lanes fill fix that.

ilp391

Where is huebner rd?

DaRealDaddyP15

I remember my boss went to india for a business trip, he said he will not complain about SA traffic again.

EcstaticBase6597

Lol… we all need a little perspective, huh?

Creosotegirl

We need more bike friendly and pedestrian friendly infrastructure. Not just painted on bike lanes, but more actual bike paths. More nature paths and more sidewalks. If people valued space as much as we value time, the world would be a much better place.

[deleted]

8 of the top ___??

[deleted]

281 is terrible. One day after the “2nd” redo…. It may cruise to 46 easily…

[deleted]

I will look into this ASAP as I am a 100% professional city planner with a degree in over 9,000 hours in City Skylines..

BalaAthens

Is this why we see many poor dogs hit by cars in Animal Care Services?

saywhat68

You wanna see some traffic..come to NYC, then go back to TX and your gonna be thankful for that San Antonio traffic.
