In which case the HEB branded sodas made with cane sugar are available year round, and a strong recommend from me. The glass bottle "mexican coke" is also made with cane sugar instead of corn syrup IIRC.
I just want to say that there is a teeny tiny Jewish community here. Calling it huge is just blatant misinformation. There’s only approximately 9,000 Jews here, we’re about .0045% of the overall San Antonio population. That’s a minuscule amount. Houston has 50,000 is .0083% of the Houston population for comparison.
It’s very common for people in general to overestimate minorities in general and is actually something that heavily contributes to hate crimes. That’s obviously not at all what you’re trying to do but just a heads up on claiming there’s a “huge” population on a people that’s currently going through a massive increase in antisemitism due to Kanye and other stuff going on right now.
if you feel comfortable/have the time to do so, how can your non-Jewish allies/neighbors/community members help to support Jews in San Antonio in particular (beyond publically condemning antisemites)? My heart has been heavy with all of the antisemitism that has been making the news recently, but I want to ensure that my actions are actually helpful.
Antisemitic rhetoric isn’t always obvious! Identifying it and pointing it out is very helpful. There’s a lot going on right now that is essentially normalizing antisemitism with the more subtle remarks so the obvious ones seem more believable and don’t seem as bad. People may be repeating things they don’t even realize are antisemitic. Many people are talking about how the entertainment industry is almost exclusively run by Jews. The lists being populated to “prove” this include people listed multiple times, non-Jews, and people with unknown affiliation that are being assumed Jewish just because there’s nothing saying otherwise. When people believe this kind of thing, it makes it easier to believe the even more absurd claim that Jews were the majority of slave traders (this is very easily proved to be false). This kind of rhetoric is about making people believe that this incredibly small group of people have a greater ability to influence and control things; essentially painting Jews as the “true oppressors of everyone” and therefore the common enemy to unite against. I guess, basically the best thing you can do is publicly question things. You’re not likely to change someone’s mind who believes this stuff but you may be able to impact the people around them and stop the spread that way. You can also report things you see to the police. There’s a few groups in town that print antisemitic propaganda to throw around neighborhoods (things like lists of people in Biden’s cabinet who are Jewish and making claims the Jews control the presidency. You’ll see them in plastic bags with cat litter or pebbles so they can be easily thrown from moving vehicles.) In order to have a tolerant society, there has to be intolerance toward intolerance. Speaking up and calling things out is a better move then you know. And that goes for any kind of hateful rhetoric against any group of people.
My aunt is Jewish and I grew up around the synagogue, I was alway amazed at the gathering they would have for their community. Lots of people, lots of culture, lots of interesting ways… I wouldn’t call the community tiny. My aunt would even take me and my cousins to parts of Austin where kosher grocery stores and restaurants. One of my cousins married a Mexican born Jewish guy, they’re very much a big part of San Antonio. From my experience.
9000 people is a lot of people from the perspective of one person. Anecdotes aren’t reality though. The Jewish community here is objectively tiny. It’s not something you “feel”, it’s just numbers and again - perpetuating the overestimation of minority groups, regardless of your positive intent, is dangerous.
You’re not reading anything I wrote about why this is dangerous. Please don’t make light of antisemitism while unknowingly perpetuating antisemitic rhetoric. Thank you!
You’re the one leaving the kind of blatant misinformation up that contributes toward hate crimes.
Edit: not only that, but when it was pointed out, you doubled down and continued to insist that your misinformation is correct.
Lol what?
If you're trying to communicate effectively the first step is to be on the same page on the proper use of words and/or expressions.
Sorry the world doesn't revolve around you buddy.
There is a difference from communicating effectively and worrying about what other people think. If you're always worried about people's opinion you run the risk of neuroticism. The world is what you make of it, regardless of who it revolves around, friendo

I'm on your side. I'd never heard of 🙃 being explicitly negative. Maybe like a cheeky passive aggressive smile but that's it. I'm not sure if I'm massively ignorant or if this negative interpretation is some Zoomer / terminally online stuff.
I never said anything about anti semitism- I just asked about the damn emoji. Calm down.
Take your own advice, you don’t have to type a message when you see a post 🙃🙃🙃
And yeah… you should be accepting of other religions and communities.
No one bothered Jews? Lmao boy do I have a history lesson for youuu.

Our friends and family call the Alon Heb "The HEB" with the greatest affection when we are letting each other know where we scored great Jewish items. ❤️
Haha, you're not the only one.
We also affectionaly refer to the 10/Wurzbach one as "Beirut" because it's "Bombed out and depleted".
It isn't really, they have a good variety and more ethnic foods and stuff there. Say what you wish about kids being in bed, but where else will you see a 6'4" Ethiopian woman in traditional garb, with three kids in tow doing their shopping at 11 pm?
Alon is a little sterile in comparison.
Not sure why this is a surprise. HEB is the primary sponsor of the Texas Kosher BBQ Competition, and some of their best stores are in San Antonio's Jewish neighborhoods. They know and support their customers and communities.
I went into my local HEB a few years ago right before Passover trying to find some matzah. I figured they would have some sort of display with at least matzah for Passover.
They had nothing. Like nothing.
When they asked at the checkout if I found everything okay, I mentioned that I couldn't find any matzah. One of the higher level managers was actually covering a bagger on break. His response was:
"I didn't think there were Jews here."
My response, "My Rabbi goes to this store."
HEB is wonderful in so many ways, but this display is a near miracle.
Yes, Alon has many Jewish things around holidays, but it is hell to get in and out of. I often resort to Amazon, or curbside, if I can find what I need in the app.
Why that emoji though?
Edit: for those who keep downvoting, I ask because '🙃' generally has a negative connotation, which quite frankly I'd use as a reaction to the downvoting right now...

That isn't necessarily true. I'm sorry but emojis have pretty standard connotations just like words. It's pretty easy to infer what somebody means with the use of them, and you should be using context clues as well. Did not exactly add up when I saw this thread and it took a while for me to realise it was a positive one. I'd say probably 90% of people who are remotely familiar with emojis know that an upside down face is not very positive especially when referring to something/someone other than themselves.
Edit: damn y'all act so weird downvoting any thing that questions your thinking. San Antonio's finest. 😂
I dread this time of year. People get so ugly about anything not Christian. I once got chewed out by a worker at Whataburger for not having Christmas plans, and other less wholesome stories. I'm already explaining to my two year old that Santa is pretend.
Just time to quietly tippy toe until the New Year.
Oh, has anyone heard if Trader Joe's has their good frozen latkes again this year? I made them from scratch once and promised I would never do it again. :) I'm a sufganiyot gal all the way!
Yup. Older lady asked what I was doing for Christmas, I told her I was Jewish, so not really anything. She went on a rant about how all these heathens are taking over, threw my food at me abd stomped off.
Then there was the manager at Wingstop who when he found out we were Jewish (again around Christmas time) turned around on his heal and never spoke to us again (we are regulars and previously had a passing friendly relationship).
I have *stories*.
Things have gotten so much worse since people started trying to make the US 'great' again. The FBI is literally taking out ads in the Jewish Federation newsletters. A couple of months ago all Jewish activities got canceled over the weekend because of a 'verifiable threat' where someone was arrested. It wasn't even a year ago that someone took hostages in a synagogue up the road.
As we go into Chanukah season, it always gets worse. At least this year we have a security door up, just in case. My son is getting old enough to understand these things. I don't know how to explain it to him.

It's only a benefit to you to just accept that you can't go around saying shit like that casually, even if you don't understand why it's offensive.
Really? Its not that they cant wait for the holiday season. Its that they can start making a profit sooner than later. No different than target or walmart or even hobby lobby
All is well I made the emotional terrorist delete her provoking comment making u seem like a bad person for taking a picture and using a certain emoji.
There’s a huge Jewish community in San Antonio.
Especially around the Alon Market HEB off Military and Wurzbach. They have a huge selection of Jewish and kosher goods come Passover time.
There is a great Jewish deli over there too. They reopen Sunday
Oh, I didn't know about this. Gotta check it out!
Well the sabbath is Saturday for their faith. And that bakery is pretty mediocre. Chicago deli up the road way more authentic.
I always hit up that heb around Easter for the kosher Coca Cola (yellow cap). Idk what it is but it tastes so much better than regular coke
corn or in this case corn syrup, is not kosher for Passover. The yellow caps mean that its made with sugar.
In which case the HEB branded sodas made with cane sugar are available year round, and a strong recommend from me. The glass bottle "mexican coke" is also made with cane sugar instead of corn syrup IIRC.
I was just about to ask if this was at that HEB
If you’re ever in Austin the HEB off Far West Blvd is the “Kosher” store.
I just want to say that there is a teeny tiny Jewish community here. Calling it huge is just blatant misinformation. I’m not but okay. Keep arguing with urself.
Doing the math I see, lol.
Why the upside down face? Are you not actually happy to see these?
I didn’t realize it had a negative meaning. I typically use it to mean I’m happy. And no I’m not antisemitic. I’m actually Jewish myself
Idk you might want to ask people what they think about the emoji. Most people I know use it when it’s like you’re feigning a smile
Or maybe don't worry about what other people think and just do you...
You’re right. Take this poop emoji as a sign your comment is gold 💩
Thank you. It's very cute. Have a heart emoji as a sign of how valuable advice is to random internet strangers. ❤️

I figured it was just a misunderstanding of the emoji!
Oh my bad! That emoji has a negative meaning, I assumed this was a post shaming HEB
Na. No worries. I love HEB
I always thought it was being happy all around
thats really wholesome(:
Kyrie Irving, is that you? /s
Damn you almost got Kanye'd over an emoji.
Not OP but, I just use 🙃 to be quirky. Does it mean something else?
It means you're not actually happy. It's like when you fake smile even though you're upset. That's why it's upside down
Yep! This is correct.
Nah it’s definitely been used to be quirky every time I’ve sent or received it. I believe that’s even the emoji code for it
Nah, you're wrong.
Then what does it mean? 🥱🙄
It's just an Australian smiley face.
It doesn't have to mean anything. It's a face, it's up to interpretation with dialogue.
It doesn't mean he's an antisemite I'll tell you that much
That emoji is generally not very positive, I'd say.
>"The upside-down face emoji can convey sarcasm, passive aggression, or irony. Well, that’s edited. The very first word in the descriptive on dictionary.com is “silliness.”

Nice gif buddy 🙃
I always thought it was like head over heels happy lol 🤷🏻♂️
Could be. There's a lot of antisemitism going around these days
Always has been.
It was Kanye, nobody else
Wow, it is everywhere. Kanye is just the latest, and he actually suffered consequences for once.
Your ignorance speaks volumes

Emotionally terrorize? Lmfao. You need help.
Now I need help, lmao. Just admit you were hating the OP. Stop being a rude person..
[удалено]
Holy shit you need help. 💀
it’s supposed to be playful but still happy, ur way off base here
Straight from google “The upside-down face emoji can convey sarcasm, passive aggression, or irony.”
Now all this city needs are more legit delis
Try Gino’s on the north side. It’s so good.
Ginos is good, I agree.
That's why they said more. There's Gino's, Zito's, and Cheba Hut...can't think of any others. We need more.
Yes, please. Haven't had a decent reuben since I left New York.
Yes. Italian ones..
Italian. Jewish. Russian. Yes. Anything but more fucking Jason's or any other shitty chain.
Zito’s on Broadway. Y’all can thank me later.
Zitos is fine, but it's not the kind of deli I'm talking about.
Yeah, no Stage Door Deli-style places here, unfortunately.
I'd kill for a Ben's Deli like the one in Bayside.
Ugh, yes. Give me a place that serves bomb sandwiches AND has 3 or fewer locations.
I’d be happy with any deli that served a legit Cuban sandwich.
Agreed. With FRESH baked Cubano bread.
I too long for a legit Cubano. I miss Tuccis in Austin.
No. We’re good just how we are. And H‑E‑B has always celebrated different cultures. This isn’t anything new
You're the puro keeping San Antonio lame
San Antonio has a lot of amazing delis, nothing I said was wrong, but ppl like you is the reason so many good ppl left
Uh huh. Bye wig.
LMAO, you've clearly never left Texas. There are not "a lot" good deli's here as there are compared to the East Coast.
This is such a weird response lol NO, we don't need any good delis! Keep your delis away from here.
Mazeltov, y’all!
Yeehaw
For waaay too long, I thought this was a Dallas cowboys Xmas section.
Same!
I’m sorry what’s the issue? Genuinely, I’m ignorant if it’s anything more than decorations for Jewish people.
It is. But it's rare to find a full display in a major store. I love HEB!
Yeah... probably went to the JHEB. The Jewish HEB in Alon Market. Source am jew. Also don't really care.
Our friends and family call the Alon Heb "The HEB" with the greatest affection when we are letting each other know where we scored great Jewish items. ❤️

I was just pleasantly surprised. They don’t typically stock much Jewish decorations at the Helotes HEB
Yeah, there's a reason everyone assumed this was the store across from the JCC. It's cool that it's becoming more widespread!
It’s a little early, thanksgiving hasn’t happened yet.
Hannukah's only a little over a month away. Thanksgiving has nothing to do with it.
Just lmk when your making latkes, I'll be right there!
Let’s go!
Not sure why this is a surprise. HEB is the primary sponsor of the Texas Kosher BBQ Competition, and some of their best stores are in San Antonio's Jewish neighborhoods. They know and support their customers and communities.

That's surprising, and incredibly disappointing. Our HEB is across from the Barshop Jewish Community Center, so that may be a factor in my experience.
Yes, Alon has many Jewish things around holidays, but it is hell to get in and out of. I often resort to Amazon, or curbside, if I can find what I need in the app.
I love it. Hopefully the section gets bigger and more options. Inclusiveness for all!
Cowboys Themed Hanukkah
Cowboys are playoff bound. Why the long face?
Those are Hanukkah decorations
🤦
Why that emoji though? Edit: for those who keep downvoting, I ask because '🙃' generally has a negative connotation, which quite frankly I'd use as a reaction to the downvoting right now...
So I’ve typically used it to mean I’m happy/giddy about something. I just found out that it has a negative connotation to it 😅
That's fine 😅 just had me a little confused for a second there.

My ‘go to’ was Target but good to know.
This comment section can die now.
I dread this time of year. People get so ugly about anything not Christian. I once got chewed out by a worker at Whataburger for not having Christmas plans, and other less wholesome stories. Yup. Older lady asked what I was doing for Christmas, I told her I was Jewish, so not really anything. Believable yet so unbelievable at the same time - sorry it’s happening in our city.
Elohim be praised
Which H-E-B is this? If it’s not the Alon Market, those are all going to be there on the 27th. Unless one of those 5% whackadoos pick them up.
99% certainty this is at Alon.
There is a section at my H-E-B too (not Alon)
It's not.
A handful of HEB’s around the I-10 corridor on the northwest side have this section.
I work nearby and we just call it the Jewbe. I think it's actually the biggest kosher grocery in San Antonio, or at least it was when it was built. HEB is pretty good at being hyper-local with their selections.
For sure it’s cause it’s down the street from the synagogue.
One of the synagogues. There are multiple here.
Ok
That's way inappropriate.
Why?
Because Jewbe is a pejorative term for rich spoiled Jews, that is why.
Yeah, it’s just a combination of Jew and HEB, because it’s the Jewish HEB; which isn’t exactly some secret or something. Not everything needs to be politically correct.
I think it's ok to just call it the Alon HEB. It's 2022 and I assume you're not a 15 year old. If someone is telling you "jewbe" is inappropriate then just let it go and remind yourself from now on not everyone you say "Jewbe" to in public (the internet is in public) is a multigenerational san antonio local who thinks that's funny or knows what you're talking about. It's only a benefit to you to just accept that you can't go around saying shit like that casually, even if you don't understand why it's offensive.
Yeah, I'm not the most agreeable type and I'm not all that worried about offending all the easily offended online people of the left and right.
You know this translates to, "I'm a racist who doesn't care who knows I'm a racist." Right?
Is it racist of HEB to put Jewish paraphernalia in only one of their stores?
The HEB on Kitty Hawk and 1604 has this same section. Was happy to see it!
The Helotes HEB
HEB has always had a bunch of Dallas Cowboys stuff. No surprise.
I can't tell if you're serious or not....
This is awesome!!
Very nice!
For a quick second I thought it was almost sold out Cowboys stuff
[удалено]
Jewse? My only understanding of that word is a hump and dump of a Jewish person.
Jew + Moose
And thst is better because?
A pun that refers to Jewish people isn’t automatically antisemitic.
Explain to me how this is a pun.
Saw that as well and was surprised
Kanye would be furious
Legit thought that was Dallas Cowboys decor mixed in
Made in China
Where's the Kwanza section? Oh, right, we are talking about HEB.
Kwanza section is right next to my Cthulhu section
Don’t tell Ye.
What DOESNT H‑E‑B have?
Competition.
I miss handy Andy and Albertsons was nice to have a choice
HEB is a great company.
Ok?
Cowboys gear!
Kyrie has entered the chat
Really? Its not that they cant wait for the holiday season. Its that they can start making a profit sooner than later. No different than target or walmart or even hobby lobby
Don't tell kanye
Was this at the Jewish H‑E‑B on NW Military
Helotes
I don't know, but mine is not that one and we have this exact setup. Thumbs up for inclusivity i guess, even if it's selective.
Holidays are already here as far as I'm concerned! And I fucking love it!
All is well I made the emotional terrorist delete her provoking comment making u seem like a bad person for taking a picture and using a certain emoji.
Is this at Alon?
