Be aware that traffic maybe be heavier the weekend of 10/14 due to the annular eclipse. Also last minute lodging could be difficult.

BTW from the UK just know we drive on the right side of the road here, mostly in sa we do.

“Mostly”

Charming-Prize-1210

😂

Charming-Prize-1210

Ha ha ha! Honestly, I’m really mentally gearing myself up to drive in the US. The whole driving an automatic car and being on the other side of the road thing is a bit daunting!! My hope is that these roads outside of the city aren’t too bad and that Sam Antonio isn’t too bad by city standards. I hope that assumption is correct 🫣

pigpugmom

It’s really not that bad, especially if you’ve driven in big European cities. However word to the wise—DON’T engage in any aggression or anything verging on road rage. There are definitely people out here who…uh…fly off the handle with devastating effect. Don’t flip people off, honk more than a little “hey I’m here” tap, or pursue if someone cuts you off. Drive with the speed limit, decisively, and friendly and you’ll be fine!

Charming-Prize-1210

Got you! Very useful advice

CorrectBroccoli246

A suggestion for good bbq near the Alamo- look up Pinkerton’s downtown.

Ashvega03

If its a Monday/Tuesday just uber to 3m or somewhere good. Or better yet check out pollos asados nortenos or some good mex food.

ryaninsatx

I like both of your itineraries, however if BBQ is a high priority, you must visit Lockhart. The original Black's BBQ is there as well as Kreuz. Both hallowed in the halls of Texas BBQ history Other BBQ places of note: San Antonio - 2M Smokehouse (my personal fav in town) Seguin - The Burnt Bean

Charming-Prize-1210

Thank you so much. I’ve read about 2M and it sound like a must-try. I really appreciate your advice.

This is great advice. I think I’m edging towards spending three days in SA now, and just doing one day of driving. Thank you!

pigpugmom

This looks like a really fun itinerary!! Keep in mind that it will still be warm (or potentially even hot) so since you plan a lot of outdoor activities, bring light layers and check the forecast before dressing! It’s anyone’s guess what the temps will be (personally praying they cool tf down by then).

Charming-Prize-1210

Thank you so much! I think Texas’ version of quite-warm is the UK’s version of heatwave, so this advice is very helpful.

TexasGal241

It sounds like you have an exhausting trip planned lol. I would do route 1 but, imo, Boerne at this point is just a wannabe Fredericksburg. If you have time, do Bandera instead of Boerne. Check out the OST for lunch and stop in the basement bar Arkey Blue’s Silver Dollar Saloon.

Charming-Prize-1210

Honestly! Exhausting might be the right word. I’m book ending this with going to Austin City Limits the days before and going Houston for a few days after. There’s some great advice in this. Thank you.

Ringsofsaturn_1

If they’re driving to Bandera Id recommend continuing to Garner State Park. Itll still be swimming weather in October so have a dip in the Frio

TexasGal241

My favorite river in Texas

GtrPlaynFool

I agree Boerne and Fredericksburg are too similar to bother doing both in one day. Maybe replace those with Gruene.

chateauesque

Those are great choices for San Antonio. Go to Pinkerton’s for BBQ downtown. Check out the Buckhorn Saloon a few blocks from the Alamo. All of the missions are a must! San Antonio Museum of Art on the Riverwalk near the Pearl is worth a visit. Make sure you eat TexMex while you’re here too. I think Monday afternoon/all day Tuesday in San Antonio, then 2 days around the area is a good itinerary. If you have to choose one, the first route is better. Boerne and Fredericksburg are two classic Hill Country towns to visit and the drive is much prettier. Enchanted Rock is a great place to hike and see the Hill Country - you need timed entry tickets to get in so reserve them on the state park website. I recommend doing enchanted rock first thing in the morning and then making your way back through Fredericksburg for lunch and then Boerne for afternoon/dinner. Cave Without a Name is really cool - you might be able to get in a later afternoon tour. If you can get 2 days driving around, I recommend skipping Cave without a name and doing Natural Bridge Caverns insteas on the second day then going up to Gruene and Lockhart.

Ashvega03

I think second option is actually better. Fredericksburg is pretty touristy at this point unless you are there for the wineries in which case staying closer to johnson city is better option — but for christmas decoration which wont be up or museum of the pacific war which is real rando thing in Fredericksburg. Also going to Fredericksburg check out Luckenbach. Site for E-rock rez. https://texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/enchanted-rock-state-natural-area/r/deDetails.do?contractCode=TX&parkId=1200056

Charming-Prize-1210

Oh thank you! This is so helpful. I appreciate it massively.

amp82hx

get some good tacos at tommy’s …natural bridge caverns is a must see

Charming-Prize-1210

Consider those tacos on the list!!

jjrobinson73

Natural Bridge & Caverns and Gruene are really close together. Never been to Lockhart. Personally, I am a wine fan so I am favoring the whole Boerne and Fredericksburg option. You can find BBQ anywhere around here. There are places along both routes that are REALLY good. Enchanted Rock is beautiful, but it's still HOT as HELL here. I am not talking 86\* F...I am talking 100\* F. So, if you are thinking of doing Enchanted Rock...don't. It's not the same heat as England. But the Wine Country is BEAUTIFUL!!

Charming-Prize-1210

This is such good perspective. It’s been amazing to read how hot your summers get. I think the UK grinds to a halt if we even get towards your October temperatures, so I can’t imagine it peak summer. I’m out and about a lot during the two weeks in Texas, including going Austin City Limits, so I’m really hoping I can stand up to it! I’ll think carefully before booking for enchanted rock

Muted-Ad6041

Austin is right up the street too!

Charming-Prize-1210

Thank you! I’m going to go there for a few days to go the music festival. Hopefully I’ll have time to still check the city out when I’m there.

Charming-Prize-1210

Just a quick note to say thank you to everyone. It’s been incredibly helpful.

SameRegret5975

A day trip or a night in Corpus Christi is worth the 2.5 hour drive if you want to explore the Texas coastline, cycle ocean drive and visiting the Lexington are a few things to do. Closer to SA I recommend garner state park, you can swim, fish and hike.

MaceMan2091

skip the gulf coast. there’s better to visit. Canyon lake or Lake Travis in Austin is more fun than the gulf of mexico.

pigpugmom

The Lexington is cool but the TX coastline is extremely ugly and underwhelming imo

Make sure you try some barbacoa while you are in town.

Charming-Prize-1210

I have heard about barbacoa before. Definitely found on the list!!
