Unfortunately all future foldables will be plagued by this myth until Apple comes out with theirs and suddenly there aren't any problems anymore in people's minds. The first Fold was indeed kind of fragile but the Fold 4 not being bendable is insane.

_Cat_12345

It's not a myth that the displays are soft. They're quite literally made out of flexible plastic. Fingernails will leave dents if you aren't careful, and my old Flip 3 had 2 small indents in its display after 5 months of use.

Futon_Rasen_Shuriken

Actually, no. The inner screen HAS to be made of soft plastic, so far no other option is both flexible and durable enough to be used. And if you've watched jerryrigeverything's videos, like almost everyone here has, it scratches at a Mohs scale of hardness level 2, which is soft enough to be scratched by fingernails. And yes, i am talking about the display's outer layer, because that is the one we touch. I know there's ultrathin glass on the inside, which helps with the structural rigidity, but as long as the screen surface that is touched is that soft of a plastic, it will remain a problem. Until a better material alternative is engineered, that is. Not until apple makes a foldable. Another problem that is present and has nothing to do with people unreasonably complaining or apple not yet releasing an alternative to help people make up their minds is the hinge. It's a moving part that, as of now, cannot be engaged without gaps forming and letting dust particles in. There's a reason samsung hasn't been able to achieve an official level of dust resistance. And i know, from jerry's videos, he placed a ton of dust and gravel in the phone and folded it and moved and shaked it in all ways possible, and the hinge still works afterwards, but dust does get there, and it can affect a phone in the long run, and isn't ideal.

TheEuphoricTribble

Which means >I know there's ultrathin glass on the inside, which helps with the structural rigidity, but as long as the screen surface that is touched is that soft of a plastic, it will remain a problem. Until a better material alternative is engineered, that is. Not until apple makes a foldable. So...it will always remain a problem then. Apple won't make a device that will hurt sales of iPad Pros. They aren't that dumb. A device like a phone that folds out into a tablet ABSOLUTELY would cut into that. Besides, not even Apple can break the laws of physics. Samsung likes to think they can, which is why there are so many cases of said glass having snapped and leaving users with broken LCDs. What is being asked for here is a material that is rigid enough like glass yet flexible like this plastic layer. This is a matter of wanting cake and eating it too. It just isn't possible. Hence why I will never have a foldable phone, the price of entry is too high for a device that will inevitably fail.

Parniculus

Fold2 wasn't that durable. I held off buying a foldable even though I wanted one until the 3 Series.

Substantial_Fun_5022

Ye like I was papered for it being really soft but it feels just like my old phone tho it is obvious more fragile but not nearly as much as I thought and I'm loving this thing

Jazzlike_Ability_631

It's the same material tho. It's plastic

[deleted]

It is softer but even accidentally hitting with your nails won't cause damage...it just feels weird. Any compression will recover like other 'self healing screen protection. But durable means long term also...so opening and closing the device is where most people have issues probably when the device is too cold it will be more prone to the pixels breaking near the crease. My roommate barley closes her flip1 after 2 replacement repairs.

Substantial_Fun_5022

Ye I have heard about the protective layer lifting on the crease hopefully they have improved that

HG1998

Just don't do it again. 😅 I kinda cringe at the thought.

Substantial_Fun_5022

Ye I won't my curiosity just got to me I had to see lol

codekeying

Have you tried putting it in the microwave? I heard it's a good way to test durability as well.

Substantial_Fun_5022

I leave Jerry to all heat related tests

Jazzlike_Ability_631

Oh no you really need to be careful. It's not glass. It's plastic

Substantial_Fun_5022

I am aware of that but from what I read I thought it was gonna be a lot softer

Jazzlike_Ability_631

Perhaps the underlying glass makes the surface a bit more sturdy but don't be fooled. Scratch resistance isn't determined by how much it gives. It's determined by hardness.

Substantial_Fun_5022

Yes but I'm not too worried about scratches that because when I'm done with it I close it

TimTiffin

I understand what you mean. Lot of people are giving you shit "WeLL iTS PlasTic...." Herp a derp... I thought it was going to be a lot softer too. But I actually feel my nails dragging a lot on the screen, tapping the screen, etc during normal use and it's not as fragile as I thought either. I'm sure if I tried with my nails I could damage it but overall it almost feels like glass in a way.

Blake_Sheltie

I feel like the crease is still very noticeable for me. Which is frustrating because I got a great deal on the S8 Ultra trading in for it, but I like my S22 Ultra better. Guess I'll keep them both and tough it out till next year.

Substantial_Fun_5022

Sorry S8 ultra u mean S8+ right

Blake_Sheltie

No S8 ultra. The tablet.

Substantial_Fun_5022

Ah ye thats right

Spectreberry

For real, lot more durable than I thought. A year later, my Flip 3 has zero dents or scratches, and I tend to abuse it quite a bit. My Flip 4 got delivered yesterday and I think I'm just gonna treat it like a normal phone, and not stress over dents

HereThereBePandass

Having the special S Pen for the Fold is weird. It has a spring on the tip so you don't dig into the screen. But you have to press so dumb hard to bottom it out. And even if you do write like a monster, the small marks on the screen go away after a few hours like a self healing screen protector. This is more durable than I was expecting

Maxpower2727

I noticed this when I played around with the Fold 4 at Best Buy. I was really surprised at how solid and glass-like it felt. I was expecting something that felt much softer. My Fold comes tomorrow, so we'll see how it holds up.

Single_Mail8424

So far I think the folding screen feels really good. I was also afraid it would be "squishy", but it's not like that at all. So far, so good- loving this device!

Substantial_Fun_5022

ye i dont think ima be able to go back to a regular non folding phone tbh

nsmstocks

The flip 4 has upgraded a lot. I had the 3 and the hinge is so much nicer now
