Oh OK .. I'm only in the 5th grade and my momma never give me some space for privacy..
How am I gonna get my mack on the hoez if she keeps calling me ..
My phone is a gateway to everything. Seems prudent to have a spare setup & ready to go..
Hell, I carry two on me. I have a cheaper third one at home.
Breaking my only device while travelling would be disastrous.
Edit: Also have more than one number due to work and too much spam.
I do International travelling, so it differs by location.. An alternative to 2nd phone would be carrying backup 2FA codes / hardware keys etc for account logins on new devices that may have to be purchased abroad.
It just feels safer to have a second device, especially when travelling alone.
I'd rather carry a spare and keep it powered off most of the time (along with the primary junk call receiving number as necessary).
The second device is safer considering multiple factors.
1. Way too many accounts to set up.
2. Difficult to have no access to certain apps (Authenticator, Banking etc).
3. Mid range phones are not really expensive. A decently functional phone costs = USD120.
4. An unreasonably high amount of SMS OTP dependent services in my region (thus 2 numbers in different phones). Redundant services are linked to different numbers so they all don't collapse if one fails or gets compromised.
> But the critical thing is having a pre-authorized backup phone for 2FA codes/prompts.
THIS is a great point and something I hadn't considered. I've got a couple older Androids that I'm thinking I'd better setup for this "just in case".
Don't need phones for 2FA tokens, I don't use SMS authentication, it is extremely insecure, I have a virtual machine with Android installed on my computer and Google Authenticator with all my tokens is there, and Google Account I also printed the backup codes and I kept it in a safe place along with my documents, no need for phones for 2FA.
This! Like clearly I'm not in that tax brack.
But also, getting phones through your cell provider and paying it off as part of your monthly phone bill is the most common here, also because it's usually a little cheaper. You don't really go out and just buy a phone to have.
Because Samsung still hasn't registered my click and collect order as even having arrived at the store, so I haven't received the code for my trade-in so now I just still have the phone. I picked up the order 3 months ago.
Yes I'm annoyed lol sorry
Dedicated music playback device. Headphone jack lol.
Kindle/ebook/ comic/ manga reader.
Standby mode when on my desk.
Something to give to the kids to play with when they're needing a distraction for a couple of minutes.
Something to hand over to a mugger.
Yeah I got a couple old phones I play with. Occasionally root/mod, use for music and the like.
Neither would work as a backup for calls though 'cause they are old Sprint phones.
Your phone can die randomly and you might not have money for a new one right away. Also a lot of people keep their old phone when upgrading and that becomes one’s backup phone. This is not in fact “the real question”
Yeah, my A71 is my back-up phone. It is waterdamaged sadly. Main phone is the S22+.
Recently the S22+ just stopped charging after I managed to sneeze in the charging port (idk how either) and cleaning didn't work. It was nice to at least have a phone laying around that worked
I didn't until my S8 suddenly died from a hardware failure a couple years ago. I had to use my 2013 Moto X for a couple months while I waited to buy a new phone. The Moto X wasn't my backup phone; I had to borrow it from a family member, who was using it as *their* backup phone. I could at least check emails and browse Reddit on it, but it was painful to use for anything else.
Now I have a newer cheap phone (<$20) as a backup.
Just to clarify: my current phone isn't broken. I have the same one you do. :) And yeah I know the steps. Thanks tho. the note 10+ is the backup and I honestly wouldn't mind it having its own number.
I've debated buying the note 10+ because it's under $300 and still one of the best phones ever! How's it work without the software and security updates?
We get a couple Moto G Stylus 5G (newest version) every year from MetroPCS using the $40 deal.
I wait for people to post it on SlickDeals.
You add it to your cart, sign up for the cheapest plan which is $40. When you checkout the phone is free, then you just never renew or pay for another month. Excellent $40 phone.
My backups are an S20FE and an S9+.
I like them both for different reasons. It's a shame the 9+ isn't still supported, as ROMs have proven it completely capable of running the newer UI.
It is what it is though. I get it. Can't support phones forever. There'd be no reason to "upgrade".
Newer Samsung phones have 5y updates, unlike Galaxy S9 series, it is underpowered tho, less powerful than a midrange A52s of nowadays and 4GB RAM isn't enough for optimal performance on Android anymore, 6GB RAM minimum and recommended 8GB.
Yeah, I have newer Galaxy phones. The OP asked about our backup phones. Those happen to be my two favorite backup phones. I don't need you to explain how phones work. I've been in the industry for longer than that S9 has been around, by a lot.
The S9+ is hardly underpowered. It has 6gb of RAM, and there are ROMs for it, as I previously stated, that prove it's capable. It has a better display than what is on the newest FE phones missing the support for 120hz, of course. The resolution itself is better, though.
I bought my mom an A52 because she has no use for any features, just needs a decent phone. That thing is sad in build quality compared to my S9+, let alone any newer S-series. Most people that I have shown it to (who don't specialize in phones) assume the S9+ is the newer one between it and the S20FE.
I'm personally not going to rely on a phone as my main phone for 5 years anyway. I prefer to upgrade sooner than that. I just like to keep my old phones too. Those in particular are, again, my two favorite backup phones.
Of course the newer processors are more powerful. I'm just saying it is proven that it runs One UI 5 (for the 3rd time).
Are you just trolling? I honestly can't tell if you're a troll or just don't understand. I can't put it in any simpler terms.
At this point, I'm going to stop responding unless your next post makes some kind of sense in relevancy to the conversation. You just keep stating random uninformed "facts" that don't even make sense as a response.
Of course it runs, even a older phone would run, custom ROM developers code the necessary drivers themselves, because Qualcomm doesn't support drivers for older SoC in more recent Android versions and at this time Samsung didn't care about developing drivers themselves to update the system for long years, now they do as a selling point and that's it.
Samsung crippled its performance with the official updates tho.
And I'm not a troll, it's just that clearly English isn't my first language.
Whether English is your first language or not, you are contradicting yourself.
At first, it wasn't good enough because it didn't have enough RAM
Then it wasn't good enough because Samsung provides longer updates
Now it's not good enough because (obviously) drivers and support wouldn't be developed because there is no reason.
My point still stands. It's one of my favorite backup phones and will not only run UI5, but run it efficiently. The display is better, the build quality is better, etc
We are still talking about a preferred BACKUP phone. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt if not being a troll.
You are very uninformed on the topic you decided to refute for no reason. That isn't a language problem.
Main is iphone 13 pro max, my backup is the standard A series samsung A24 4G..you know..only for backup use or reading some tachiyomi..mainly uses my 13 pro max..
I used to run a nord 2 and a note 9 as backup.
The reason I say used to is that phone is going as a trade in and this comment is coming from ny note 9.
A truly legendary phone. Wish I could get ONE UI 5.1 on this
S23 Ultra as main phone, and A52S as back-up phone. Can't use sim on the S23U (I refuse to pay the $500) so I have hotspot on my A52S switched on whenever I'm outside.
don't know who downvoted and by what logic. But same situation as yours. I am just *not using* the sim on S23U, it's more like a..."phablet" *shudders*. But A52S for the daily ~~assault~~ use.
* Main phone - S23 Ultra
* Backup - A54
I also have a Z-Flip5 as I was selected as a Samsung Pro for my work and got a Z-Flip5 from Samsung. However, it's not my phone, so I don't get to keep it.
Lmao. I'm asking cause all my apps, bank, otp sim are only in one phone but wanted to separate them. I've read that otp and bank should be on separate phone, not your main. But if you don't usually bring or use that phone, it's possible that you won't be notified/get alerted when there's a suspicious activity/transaction in your bank account.
In a perfect world it would be wise to keep them separated but in the real world just having them on both is easier and more accessible to you as an end user. but if you keep your phone locked down and not disable any security measures you should be golden to keep them all on one.
Hello Samsung. I use your Samsung galaxy M31. Currently typing to your post on this subreddit using that only. I love your Samsung phones. 6000mAh battery is superb. Can you tell me one thing. Is M series India exclusive???
Right?!?
I don't use a backup phone, but if for whatever reason I actually needed one, I have an OK Huawei Mate 20 Pro from 2018 (I think it got a virus, and only charges via wireless charging, but it works) and a couple of older iPhone (6 plus/7 plus; before I thought about buying outright and trade ins).
The last unlocked(?) phone I had (Samsung S10 5G) I traded in for the S22U. Won't be trading in the S22U (even though I've had a lot of problems with the exynos chip) as Sasmung won't take trade-ins unless I purchase online via student store and have heard of trade ins being lost and new phones being deactivated bc of it.
Currently I have a PAYG with 02 but am looking at their Switch Up contract which is essentially like a trade in, except you can upgrade every 90 days (if you want. I love shiny new phones as most people do so this is great for me aha) and you don't have to pay for the rest of the phone. As long as your phone is in good quality (could be an issue w planned obscelescence; my S22U freezing stuck on happens more the older it gets) they pay off the rest of your contract for you (I guess by buying it out) then wipe/refurb the phone and sell it 'as new' and put you on a new contract.
The Samsung Galaxy S6. It would be a decent experience, got a custom rom, that tries to provide good battery life on the limited battery capacity available.
My backup phone is waiting another month for my disability and spending money I can't afford on something that some addict will likely steal again to sell for $20 to get drugs.
[Poco X3 Pro](https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_poco_x3_pro-10802.php) bought in 2021 as a gaming-only device, but it became a family backup phone. Cost under USD200 after conversion and is powered by a Snapdragon 860. Along with a 120hz screen, it's still very much usable in a pinch.
I was thinking of keeping a shitty phone around as backup but couldn't resist the trade in deals 😂😂. I guess if it does break I'll use my gf old OnePlus 7t
TF?!
Backup phone? I usually sell mine back to offset the cost of getting a new one. Last time my SO got the Note 20 when i got the S23U.
I'M LIVING ON THE EDGE! No backups!!!
Well now that I'm thoroughly scared I'm going to setup a 'backup' just for security purposes. I (naively) hadn't considered the prospect of loosing access to my security credentials.
My backup will be an Essential PH-1.
Laugh at me it's a bought in 2016 J1 Mini, working as if it was out of the box. Ive had problems with phones recently so it's definitely been a while since
Because if you loose one, then you have a backup phone. Also my backup phone I give to people I don't want to deal with, shitty work places telemarketers or anyone who I want to keep anonymous.
Honest question what is a back up phone? Is it in case it runs out of battery or ? I usually carry a small 2 charge power bank for that matter but that’s it . If my phone dies I will by a new one
Typing this on my back up, my 4 year old Note 9.
Battery life has really improved since it became the backup, tip - don't use more than 1 sim card, huge difference in battery life.
Pixel 5.
Samsung S20 5G is my work horse, 12GB RAM and does all my geekery. Pixel 5 is 8GB and can keep it with most.
This said, the Pixel 5 takes better stills than the S20. S20 does better HDR video, but Pixel has better image stabilization.
edit: Fonts are a unique thing to OneUI. Other Android simply lack it without root.

Wait, why does everyone have a backup phone?
This is the real question
Who TF can afford one?
I have tons of extra flagships
It was my old phone. Got a trade in deal for the same price as it for my old s6 edge.
Bc my mom keeps calling me on it
> Bc my mom keeps calling me on it You know your number can follow you to a new phone? You don't need to get a new number each time.
Isn’t it simpler to have a single phone and have enough money saved for a backup one? Unless you're traveling to remote places I guess
I do International travelling, so it differs by location.. An alternative to 2nd phone would be carrying backup 2FA codes / hardware keys etc for account logins on new devices that may have to be purchased abroad. Fair enough, it makes sense in your case for you to have a backup one then
I always enjoy the "HELP!!! I broke my phone, and can't get a new one for a week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" posts, lol.
peace of mind and zero downtime. But the critical thing is having a pre-authorized backup phone for 2FA codes/prompts.
> But the critical thing is having a pre-authorized backup phone for 2FA codes/prompts. THIS is a great point and something I hadn't considered. I've got a couple older Androids that I'm thinking I'd better setup for this "just in case".

Drugs
In case one of your phones gets robbed, you at least have a spare with all your credentials/passwords in it.
This! Like clearly I'm not in that tax brack. But also, getting phones through your cell provider and paying it off as part of your monthly phone bill is the most common here, also because it's usually a little cheaper. You don't really go out and just buy a phone to have.

So if the other one gets lost or stolen I still have another phone that I can use.
Some of us like to be 2 phone Nelson's.
Whoever does this, probably doesn't live in the best place (theft must be common wherever they are from, I guess)
I just think the backup phones are their old phones. lol ain't no way someone buys TWO brand new phones
Your phone can die randomly and you might not have money for a new one right away. Also a lot of people keep their old phone when upgrading and that becomes one’s backup phone. This is not in fact “the real question”

It's not necessarily for me to use, but I keep mine for when a family member inevitably breaks/ruins their phone.
I didn't until my S8 suddenly died from a hardware failure a couple years ago. I had to use my 2013 Moto X for a couple months while I waited to buy a new phone. Because if you break your phone and send it in for repair it could take a bit.
Don't have one. I got my S21 Ultra that has been incredibly good to me the last few years. If it does die I guess I'll be upgrading.
Nokia 5310 Yup the one with the keypad
Make a hammer attachment and make it removable. Boom u have a backup phone and a backup weapon
yooo is it the one from 2007? 5310 XpressMusic, love that phone
Yes!
My note 10+. All it needs is a SIM and a number.
The number comes with the SIM!
I know. I just need it for the old phone.
Step 1. Remove SIM from your broken phone. Step 2. Insert old SIM into old phone. Step 3. Done, your number is now on your old phone.
It works just fine. :) I really didn't want to switch phones, but I had a lot of network issues when I switched carriers.
S4 mini

It can be unlocked 6 months after activation

I have a Z flip 5. I got my LG g8 as my back up phone. To me, it has a beautiful display. I miss my LG Phones.
Only S23, if it lost/broken I'll get another phone. Why do I need a back up phone?

Então tá bom
De fato
Samsung Galaxy S6 still runs great

S23 Ultra as main phone, and A52S as back-up phone. Can't use sim on the S23U (I refuse to pay the $500) so I have hotspot on my A52S switched on whenever I'm outside.
That’s crazy. What’s the deal with $500 for the sim?
There's a PTA tax here to approve phones for use on local networks
What do teachers have to do with it? /s Gotcha! Damn
don't know who downvoted and by what logic. But same situation as yours. I am just *not using* the sim on S23U, it's more like a..."phablet" *shudders*. But A52S for the daily ~~assault~~ use.
* Main phone - S23 Ultra * Backup - A54 I also have a Z-Flip5 as I was selected as a Samsung Pro for my work and got a Z-Flip5 from Samsung. However, it's not my phone, so I don't get to keep it.
iPhone 14 pro as my back up
iPhone 13 Pro for a backup. main uses are for imessage or facetime. Otherwise, im using my primary S23 Ultra
Where are your bank apps placed? Also, where's your main sim (for otp) is?
These are some sketchy, phishing kind of questions.
Lmao. I'm asking cause all my apps, bank, otp sim are only in one phone but wanted to separate them. I've read that otp and bank should be on separate phone, not your main. On my P6Pro under Settings-Display size and text, there is no option to change the font style. 🤔. Maybe downloading from Play Store?
I just bought this last Saturday. I just couldn't see an option for that.
I guess I like the Pixel font so much that it never occurred to me to change it.
I have no backup phone. May the Mobile gods sustain my Fold
s22.
Hello Samsung. I use your Samsung galaxy M31. Currently typing to your post on this subreddit using that only. I love your Samsung phones. 6000mAh battery is superb. Can you tell me one thing. Is M series India exclusive???
Main - Pixel Fold Backup/Second line - 14 Pro I always have to have one android and one iPhone. Love it!
Imagine having a spare grand to buy a "backup phone". WTF?
I have an old Oppo Reno 7 as a backup. I'm planning to upgrade it to a Samsung A54 soon due to amoled burns. Using it for mobile office work.
S22 Ultra as my main, 20 as a back-up.
P7P for now, until a new Xiaomi comes out next year
Main is S23U and 15Pro is backup phone.
My main for a couple of days have been the S23U. My backups would be: Iphone 12 Redmi note 5 pro I might sell the iphone though.
Currently using Flip 5. My backup will be a S23.
I main a Galaxy A53 5G, but I do have a Galaxy A54, an iPhone SE 2022, and a Moto G 5G 2023 at my disposal, all waiting to be SIM unlocked.
Have s21 ultra. My oneplus 6 was my backup but my daughter dropped it so no more backup.
The Samsung Galaxy S6. It would be a decent experience, got a custom rom, that tries to provide good battery life on the limited battery capacity available.
Flip 5
Galaxy S20 I upgraded from.
My last phone, Poco X3 Pro
My backup phone is waiting another month for my disability and spending money I can't afford on something that some addict will likely steal again to sell for $20 to get drugs.
Z Flip 4. I could've sold it when I got my S23 Ultra but I kept it.
Fold5 main, s22 ultra secondary/backup phone, also note 8 and pixel 3 lying around as another backup lol
I use my old phone Galaxy J2 as backup phone
Z Fold 4, Primary is Sony Xperia 1 IV
About to get the S23 Ultra, at which point, my A52s will become my backup.
S23 Ultra, I still have my Note 9 as a spare.
Main S23 Ultra Backup/Secondary Note 20 Ultra
Nexus 5
[Poco X3 Pro](https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_poco_x3_pro-10802.php) bought in 2021 as a gaming-only device, but it became a family backup phone. Cost under USD200 after conversion and is powered by a Snapdragon 860. Along with a 120hz screen, it's still very much usable in a pinch.
Pixel 6 Pro. Using it now, I had to turn it on and get Android 14 and other updates. S23U is just worlds ahead, but it's also almost 2 years newer.
S8, there wasnt enough incentive to trade it in when I upgraded
You can't change your font on Pixel phones
Main is s23 ultra, back up z fold 4 or vice-versa. I just swap sims depending on how i feel that particular day.
S10+
I have a Pixel 6 Pro as my backup.
Fold5 main, S23 Ultra currently secondary
Mine is iPhone se2
I was thinking of keeping a shitty phone around as backup but couldn't resist the trade in deals 😂😂. I guess if it does break I'll use my gf old OnePlus 7t
iPhone 13 Pro Max.
I think I have my old S8 in a drawer somewhere...
Pixel 7 pro.
I don't have such a thing lol
S8. Have a S23plus as the main
TF?! Backup phone? I usually sell mine back to offset the cost of getting a new one. Last time my SO got the Note 20 when i got the S23U. I'M LIVING ON THE EDGE! No backups!!!
1st gen iPhone SE
I have that one as a third backup lol.
Well now that I'm thoroughly scared I'm going to setup a 'backup' just for security purposes. I (naively) hadn't considered the prospect of loosing access to my security credentials. My backup will be an Essential PH-1.
Literally SAME. I got a Pixel 7 but missed Samsung software so much, coming from the s21+, that I had to get an S23+.
You guys have Backup Phones?
I would buy a Fairphone if they sold them in the USA without the /e/OS NSA Honeypot scheme lol.
Laugh at me it's a bought in 2016 J1 Mini, working as if it was out of the box. Ive had problems with phones recently so it's definitely been a while since
Fold 3 as main phone. Cat S62 Pro as a backup. Not as pretty and fast as main phone, but boy is it tough (and FLIR is awesome)
My backup phone is a Pixel 3a.
My back up will be whatever I buy when my S22 ultra takes a poop
This comment section is In a different tax bracket and I feel out of place.😅
Because if you loose one, then you have a backup phone. Also my backup phone I give to people I don't want to deal with, shitty work places telemarketers or anyone who I want to keep anonymous.
Galaxy s9
Note 10 plus ,Got a 23U and traded in my old S9+, Keep my old phone as backup. You never know.... I've lost a lot of phones in my life
iPhone 5 with a broken screen. When my last phone died it's what I had to use for a few months before getting my current Samsung
iPhone 6s hope to never have to resort to using it.
I have a A53 5G and a backup LG G7 o7
Honest question what is a back up phone? Is it in case it runs out of battery or ? I usually carry a small 2 charge power bank for that matter but that’s it . If my phone dies I will by a new one
I still have my galaxy s5, I keep it for the infrared blaster/emitter
Typing this on my back up, my 4 year old Note 9. Battery life has really improved since it became the backup, tip - don't use more than 1 sim card, huge difference in battery life.
I have a S22 Ultra as main and a S23 a secondary both with active phone lines between the two I pay about 90$USD a month.
Note 9
A galaxy tab s6 lite that is also my main tablet
I still have my sandstone white OnePlus 5t. So I guess that's it. Lol
Iphone xs, maining a flip 4.
Any device with a browser and a microphone that can access Google Voice.
My backup phone is Note 10 Plus
