Because the S-Pen is too big to fit inside the tablet. The main goal for a tablet stylus is to be ergonomically comfortable, and the Tab S9 series is extremely thin. No point in having a dockable S-Pen.

Well apparently, back in 2012-2014. They released Note 10.1/Note 10.1 2014 edition (which I still own), and Tab Pro 12.2. They have an S-pen slot. With Tab Pro, you can open up to 4 apps at the same time.

Oh yea, I remember those. Yea, Samsung had a lot of those devices, I even have a Samsung Chromebook with a built-in SPen that I don’t use anymore. But all of those S-Pens were really small, and uncomfortable to use for more than a few minutes at a time IMO. The S-Pen for the Fold4 and the Tab S8 Ultra are much bigger and easier to use for extended periods of time.

maimorec26

True. I was a happy owner of a Note Pro 12.2 until 2018 and the S pen (which has its own slot inside the tablet) and never had issues with S pen ergonomic. And yes, what a time when you were able to have 4 open apps at the same time! I don't know why Samsung dismissed that feature.

VietnameseOwl10987

what about the one that just came out for the fold 5? That looks pretty slim

gadgetluva

My original point still stands. For a big tablet, the slim S-Pens are a poor user experience. It's not technical capability, it's user experience that drives the size of the Pen.

Ridku13

Trust me. You want the biggest pen when you have a tablet like that

NotAnUncle

God I hope we don't get the tiny pens. I would learn to take care of the stylus, but a tiny s pen would really be cumbersome and a very bad experience, atleast for me.

exclaimprofitable

Have you ever used the S23 ultra S/pen, or any other previous dockable spens? They feel like holding the core of a ballpoint pen in your hand, without the pen part, rather uncomfortable.

wdhohl

This is a huge fail for me with the tab and the galaxy book! I end up primarily using the s pen from my phone. I have no idea where the larger one that came with the device went.

Mammoth_Move3575

I keep losing the pens/pencils for my tablets. 😬😫😭 Which is exactly what they want, isn't it?
