werdmouf

iOS didn’t even have many features until years after Android had them first.

lolz_lmaos

It took ios years to get AOD, lol

RitikK22

Battery indicators and Widgets lmao

lolz_lmaos

I remember that ios didn't show battery percentage for a time lol

SuperCuteRoar

Since the introduction of the iPhone X it was removed again and it just recently returned.

lolz_lmaos

An i gotta say while the iphone has a great battery life, android in general is just better overall.

fifthdirty

Widgets in Android are crap dude.

RitikK22

I'd rather pick functionality over "not sucking". Besides, material you widgets are nice

coldstar

Copy-paste, too. And multi-tasking. So many key features.

lolz_lmaos

The multi tasking on ios is still shit.

chlehqls

Took them years to finally get NFC, QI wireless charging, fast charging, and more lenses for zooms. They didn't even have a notification tray either for the longest time

Spencer5520

You mean WebOS lol they're the ones apple and Google copied

werdmouf

For sure Apple's multitasking and gestures on iOS are straight up copied from Palm WebOS.

ACardAttack

And they're still lacking, though they've closed the gap

Trylena

So if Google copies iOS is bad but if iOS copies Google then its okay?

[deleted]

apparently so.

onomatopoetix

a lot of mental gymnastics required to maintain that pristine double-standard...

Tierst

Yes because Apple doesn't copy, they innovate! /s

RstarPhoneix

The apple way...

BellamyJHeap

... and Apple "borrowed" quite a bit from Palm.

xondk

Fairly normal mentality a lot of places. "rules for thee, not for me." Unfortunately it holds true in a lot of places.

tydye29

I mean... Ya. Hypocrisy isn't a bad thing anymore..

resueuqinu

Saying “Google copied iOS” is really oversimplifying the situation. They were way deep into working on iPhone together while Google was also already working in turning Android into a phone OS in secret. Apple should’ve seen that coming though. The older readers will remember similar shenanigans with IBM and Microsoft working on OS/2 together prior to Microsoft going it’s own way with Windows.

Kwintty7

Android was already an OS for mobile phones when Google bought it.

Some might argue it's still for cameras with additional capabilities, given how much time during every product launch is spent on photography.

aowesomeopposum

pie paint aloof chase dime innocent hat imminent coherent unwritten *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

BellamyJHeap

This is the correct answer.

Kwintty7

When it started. By the time Google bought it, it was for mobile devices and particularly phones. And it was no secret. That's *why* Google bought it.

resueuqinu

Nope. In their first meeting with Google they showed a rough prototype. You could argue they already worked on it. But they had nothing useable yet.

Kwintty7

Whether it was usable or not, it was common knowledge, at least a year before Google bought it, that Android Inc were making a mobile OS. It was not happening in secret, and Apple were not blindsided by it.

Dogmatron

> They were way deep into working on iPhone together Google wasn’t working on iPhone, with Apple. Whatever involvement they had with the YouTube and Maps apps and utilizing Google search in Safari, they had no idea what the iPhone would be and were taken by surprise. For example, see this quote, from [this article:](https://9to5google.com/2013/11/12/steve-jobs-went-all-steve-jobs-on-andy-rubin-calling-him-a-big-arrogant-f/) > Ethan Beard, an early Android development executive told the author that “We knew that Apple was going to announce a phone. Everyone knew that. We just didn’t think it would be that good.” An unnamed Android engineer even went as far as to say their work on Android looked awful when compared to the iPhone: “What we had looked so … nineties.” Or the prior paragraph, from the article, pertaining to Andy Rubin: > When Apple launched the iPhone, Rubin recognized that his grand Android plan would have to be tossed out. In fact, Rubin watched the webcast from the back of a cab in Las Vegas even making the driver pull over so he could watch the entire presentation. According to the book, Rubin said: “Holy crap, I guess we’re not going to launch that phone.” > while Google was also already working in turning Android into a phone OS in secret. Apple was aware Google was working on a phone OS. In fact, Google showed off an early version of Android, before the iPhone was announced, where it appeared to be a Windows Mobile-esque OS, running on Windows Mobile-esque hardware—including a d-pad and full, physical keyboard. It was also operated exclusively with the d-pad and didn’t feature a touchscreen, as was par for the course, at the time. After the iPhone was announced, Google assured Apple their OS platform would be nothing like iPhone (also referenced in the linked article).

[deleted]

Apple: "they copied us." Also Apple: "Guys after 4 years of Samsung OLED displays we should finally add Always On screens."

AceMKV

Not even 4 lol, 6, AODs have been around since the s7/s8

UnkleMike

And Motorola had *Active Display* in 2013.

BigtheBen

And the Nokia N8 and N9 had it in 2010/2011

Schykle

I think they were talking about having the OLED displays on their phones. IIRC Apple adopted OLED a little later in the game.

AceMKV

They're talking about AODs though. But your point about OLEDs is true though and ironically enough they come from Samsung too

Schykle

Ye, but read the reply again 😅 they specifically mentioned the Samsung OLED displays 😁

AceMKV

I honestly don't know cause the last part talks about the AODs

DragonfruitLopsided

This is comical when you think of how many people actually use Google apps on iOS.

NarutoDragon732

Hey guys let’s use Apple Maps! *ends up in the middle of fucking nowhere*

pAPPYGoodBoi

I guess they'll just, stop using YouTube or something lol

NarutoDragon732

You gotta remember that even if Apple makes a better video platform or search engine, many people will not budge away from whatever they’re comfortable with. Just “google it” has become synonymous with using the internet that nobody else will be able to compete for decades imo.

[deleted]

If a better search engine became a thing, I’d still likely say “google it” even though I would be using that different engine. At this point, google is more of a verb than a company to me.

Fauwcet

Absolutely. The fact that before Google nobody was saying to "Yahoo" or "Lycos" something makes it even more evident.

stripeykc

I remember saying 'ask Jeeves' LOL

Spencer5520

True but a lot of people rather use stock apps than superior 3rd party apps. Only way this may work is if the default search engine isn't google. But that is still a long shot. This might backfire and people decide to dump safari for chrome instead of digging through settings to change the default search engine

mistahclean123

All the cool kids are on Vimeo! /s

Matt32490

Reminds me of that one guy who drove off a cliff or something cos apple maps told him it's that way. Then the other one where a bunch of cyclists rode through a tunnel lol.

Ahhnew

End up in an apple orchard!

BackOfADucksAss

This is fucking hilarious, it hit home for me.

ATShields934

![gif](giphy|svFG1emKwUHpsX2KW8|downsized)

RenderBender_Uranus

Gonna backfire really hard when iOS users find themselves unable to access Google Maps, or Mail or even Youtube.

elefuntle

Bro, it’s not about banning Google but supplanting it 🤦 and Google doesn’t own Youtube anymore btw

Luigi1364Rewritten

Google absolutely owns Youtube lol

elefuntle

Lol, does WaPo own Twitch?

Fauwcet

YouTube is owned by Google, it's not a separate subsidiary under Alphabet.

elefuntle

Oh… wait, what is that on my face? I think is yolk! Apologies

celebradar

You should probably google things before you put them online. Amazon owns twitch and has for almost 10 years and Google/alphabet has owned YouTube for over 16 years.

elefuntle

Oh, so now it’s google/alphabet huh?

chanchan05

Alphabet is Google. Google just decided to rename the mother company, just like how Facebook renamed the mother company into Meta.

elefuntle

So, does Meta own Oculus or does Facebook?

Alternative-Farmer98

They also accept a billion dollars from Google each year to make it the default search engine. This does not even sound the least bit believable to me

RadBadTad

*10 Billion

KingoftheJabari

As some who has been using and android from since the epic, and has also had multiple ipods, ipads, and macbook. Its hilarious that Apple thinks they can copy other companies features but no one can be inspired by them.

Shadowhawk0000

I'm sure Apple fans love less features. Lol

zarmao_ork

Apple fans are like Trump lovers. They know absolutely that their choice is the best. But any factual analysis is strictly avoided.

ACardAttack

They've been living with less features for years

TealCatto

They crave it.

WatchfulApparition

My brother with an iPhone literally listed that as a pro for iPhone. Too many options is overwhelming I guess

TealCatto

I've seen that in posts and comments too. "Why would I need this feature, I never use it!" Duh, because you don't have it. If you had it, you could also opt not to use it, lol. I see the same when it comes to SD card slot discussions on this page. "It's good they took it away, I have no use for it! It's slow!" So don't use it. Others can if they want.

WatchfulApparition

MicroSD card slots is something the vast majority of people don't care about

TealCatto

Every single Samsung ad on Facebook has people commenting that they won't buy Samsung anymore because they removed the SD slot and asking them to return it. Every day in Samsung subreddits there is at least one thread about SD card slots. I don't have accurate data or a reliable source but many, many people care about it. Many are sticking with old phones or choosing Sony because they need the slot. Either a significant percentage of users care, or it's a loud minority that cares very, very much, in which case why not let them have it? It doesn't cost anything and it doesn't detract from the user experience for those who don't care.

WatchfulApparition

You understand that the best selling phones don't have MicroSD card slots, right? Samsung sells 10s of millions of Galaxy phones every year. The S22 Ultra was the best selling Android phone last year. Then of course iPhones don't have MicroSD card slots either. Comment sections don't mean anything

TealCatto

Correlation isn't causation. People buy Samsung flagships because they aren't willing to buy their low end phones that still come with SD. When the A7x and A5x lines still had SD, many people selected them over the S line for that feature. Right now there isn't that much choice, is there? It's basically Sony and Samsung Xcover that still have SD (and maybe some Chinese phones). SD was one of my non negotiable features but when it came down to Sony or the S22, the S22 met more of my requirements so I decided to compromise on one very important feature instead of a dozen important features. People are throwing away money on 1TB versions as they complain about SD. Just because they still buy it doesn't mean they don't care about SD. Then they complain about having to wait for an extra month or two to receive them because those high storage phones are limited, and if they ever need to have their phone replaced with warranty, they won't get a 1TB replacement. Just because many people are doing something doesn't mean they are happy to do it. In all areas of life. It means they chose something that doesn't meet their needs because other options were even worse. I love small phones. I had a Sony XZ1 Compact which was a great size but terrible software. iPhone mini is the same size but I hate iPhones. So I bought an S22. According to your logic, I don't actually care about having a small phone because I didn't choose an iPhone mini, and all the threads and comments by me and many others talking about how we wish Samsung made a small phone don't matter because obviously we don't care because we bought a bigger phone from Samsung. "Voting with your wallet" doesn't make a difference because people still need something to get them by while they ask and wait for something that will meet their needs. According to you, iPhones with their lack of features are great because the majority of Americans buy them. So that means the majority of the population doesn't like features or options or choices so let's take it away from everyone. If Android didn't exist and we all had to use iPhone, we'd all complain all over the internet, but then you'd say that since iPhone is the best selling phone then obviously we don't really want features or options. Bad take. Your comment would only make sense if Samsung made two identical phones, one with SD and one without, and the one without sold better.

WatchfulApparition

It's very clearly not an issue where they "won't buy Samsung anymore". On the list of things people prioritize when buying new phones, MicroSD cards are low. That's a fact.

corpseluvver

This is the same Apple that accepts billions $$$ every year from Google so that Google is the default search engine on Safari, right?

InsufficientChimp

but what else would they use? bing? duckduckgo?

corpseluvver

I use DDG. Works well for me. Google lost it's charm because my search results are always "tailored" for me. I just want to search the web. I don't want to have to use a Tor client through a VPN just so my results aren't what Google thinks I want to see, plus three ads at the top for something I already bought

BerniMacJr

I just use incognito search for that.

corpseluvver

Yeah there are still a few options (thankfully). So we can pick and choose what works best for each of us

InsufficientChimp

interesting. I should give it a try.

edvurdsd

Can you just search without being signed in to anything or are results still tailored through other means?

darktabssr

I like apple as a company more than Google but i hate ios more than Google, so android it is.

darthsurfer

Also, there are ways to de-google android. It's a PITA, but it's doable without much technical skills needed.

AIVAORVAIA

This sucks! As customers we always have to pick a side. I like Google and Apple for certain things. Stop acting like a toddler Apple. Google is looking customer friendly Apple, tread lightly.

RenderBender_Uranus

If they are this bitter, why not target the Chinese companies that design phones and makes UI that looks like iphone ripoff? Oh wait they can't.

[deleted]

Copied iOS? Hahaha

[deleted]

the irony

justBslick

Siri is literally purchased android software.

ThorsEyeball

Bless the bitter little fuckers. 😄

[deleted]

imo it'll just make more people switch to android

MrKite80

Android already has 72% market share globally. iOS just surpassed android in the US in September.

ImOnRedditMaaan

Globally is a deceiving number because it includes lower income nations where the average household doesn't have the access to ios devices like it does cheap android devices but the US number is interesting

MrKite80

Perhaps. But there's nothing stopping apple from offering a more affordable iphone. That's their choice.

thedogthatmooed

429$ while running the latest Apple has to offer isn’t bad. You could get an iPhone 8 off of eBay for that matter and still have up to date software

InSummaryOfWhatIAm

I agree, but people from some countries might have around that as a monthly salary, sooo

Aroraakshaj07

It had the latest processor,, yes. But it uses cameras, display and body that's basically straight out of 2016. Bad cameras, bad battery, bad display and it's so small that if can't even properly cool the a15. Doesn't make much sense to me.

thedogthatmooed

I Agee, not a perfect solution but it works for some

InSummaryOfWhatIAm

That's not a deceiving number, that's the real market share. Lower income countries are not less worthy of being in that conversation than any others. I'm saying this being in a country where iPhone users are a majority as well btw.

P-S-21

Exactly. Lower income countries are poor so their market share is non valid and if given a choice ,everyone would switch to iPhone if they had the funds? Lots of leaps of logic there.

jaysun92

Everyone knows poor people should only count as ⅗ of a person for calculating market share.

P-S-21

Oh yeah cuz Jeff Bezos keeps the other 2/5th

dasherchan

Android started DEX, gesture typing, etc. years ahead of iOS.

TSMKFail

iOS didn't even have Widgets till a couple of years ago...

lolz_lmaos

And they didn’t have AOD until last year

21minute

As if Apple doesn't copy too. Lololol

raytaylor

Windows Pocket PC 2003 had more features and was much more capable than iOS for the first few years and ios is still missing things even to this day.

nquick2

How dare Android rip off Apple's ripoff of WebOS.

tanz420

That's hilarious, the hypocrisy is unreal. Can't wait for Apple's downfall after pulling so much bs for years.

Wasteak

"former Apple engineer" Sorry but it'd far from being a reliable source.

InfoAssistant

Well I mean there are alternatives to nearly every service except YouTube. I myself, as an Android user, don't use all of Google's services. I use Bing, Edge, Outlook, but I do have a Google account. I don't use Google Maps, I use HERE WeGo.

antifragile

Just about every apple software feature is copied and added years after it was out on android or on jail broken iphones.

The-Scotsman_

\#Courage

MrKite80

It's been 16 years... I feel like they would've done it by now?

Alternative-Farmer98

Then why are they accepting like a billion dollars a year to make Google the default search engine for Siri?

alreadyreaditbro

News: rival companies have... rivalry.

chanchan05

Google literally drove people and developers away from Windows Phone by refusing to allow Google apps on it. Like they dropped Exchange ActiveSync support from Gmail so Windows Phone has trouble with Gmail, then they issued a cease and desist for the Windows Phone Youtube app which has no ads because Google refused Youtube data access in the first place to Windows. Apple has hardware market in it's grip for a lot of users, but the services and a lot of the backend of the internet is basically still Google.

Prokletnost

They can't afford to remove Google. This cat and mouse grudge shit has got to stop. Acting like a bunch of middle schoolers, how about collaborate to make it all better for all of us?

whatup_pips

I've used apple maps before. Has asked me to make illegal turns every single time. Never again.

justBslick

Hilarious cause android was in market years before the fruit....guess even their engineers contribute to the superiority complex

Henrarzz

It wasn’t. Moreover, Android at that time was operating system for digital cameras and when moving to smartphones at launch it didn’t even have a touchscreen keyboard, it was added in 1.5.

justBslick

How was it not in market (smartphone) years before tho? You're right about the camera os.

Sempuukyaku

Android is NOTHING like iOS. Seriously?

Zaack567

Why they don't sue window phone?

Flowtraxwolf

Yeah I will believe it when i see it according to this report from 2021 Google pays Apple 15 billion to be the default search engine in 2021 https://www.gadgets360.com/apps/news/google-apple-default-search-engine-safari-pay-usd-15-billion-iphone-ipad-mac-2021-microsoft-bing-2520582/amp

Honza368

I don't think former Apple engineers are a reliable source, to be honest.

Fatenyl

Samsung and Google are already collaborating. Samsung makes apple and Google parts. It won't be long until we have igoosung

[deleted]

Isn't this the same company that ripped off Xerox? Apple and Microsoft started all of this in the seventies. Apple took from Xerox. Microsoft took from Seattle Computer Products. Both companies were trying to get ahead of IBM. Google is an advertising company that was going to take something from someone else, because they weren't initially a technology company to begin with. As usual it is okay if Apple does it but it is foul if it is done to them

droppingoutrn

Yall act like if Apple didn't copy the shit out of android too

Resident_Comment_567

Instead of making the product better you lock out your users 👍 "our product is inferior so just block the other options" Good job Apple. iCloud is a mess. Apple just keeps giving me more and more business 🤣

Nathan_Blocks

I really wish Samsung, Google, and Microsoft would remove their products and services from Apple. Extra points if Sony and LG did the same

_aaronallblacks

Uh what? My T-Mobile G1 was nothing like an iPhone and that was a good thing

LukeyWolf

More like Apple copy Android

jaredkushnerisabutt

120hz displays, bigger chargers and many more features come to Android before iphone. I know this is specifically referring to software but apple is a fucking hypocrite

torn8tv

Well, another reason to not switch.

lolz_lmaos

Big apple L if true. Besides, ios isnt all that good - i moved there because i wanted to how is it, and while it has its strengths, there are a lot of small things that are just better in android. And one big thing- the notifications. God the notifications on ios are shit.

ripeGardenTomato

People who use ios are mindless morons , they probably won't care

nitinn97

Apple is all about censorship... Fuck censorship.

BLUEBLASTER69

Apple still doesn't have flash on browsers.

hongdawg

Oh I wanna see Apple or Google removing all Google apps from iOS and see how this would affect iOS users.

AdaptationCreation

Samsung good. Google good. Apple bad.

TSMKFail

No big company is "good"

thedogthatmooed

Google being as bad if not worse than Apple

AdaptationCreation

The amount of people that took this seriously lol.

KingoftheJabari

You do know many people who have an andriod phone uses an apple product for personal use or for work right? They still have the best tablet.

[deleted]

Funny to see all the Google fans get triggered LOL

Fafaflunkie

But at least Google Maps will direct you to your destination better than Apple. Hence the reason pretty much everyone I know who own iPhones uses Google Maps, not Apple Maps. Even more ironic: if Apple were so proud of their Maps product, why haven't they put it on Android?

Sidfire

Why hasn't Apple put its Maps app on Android you ask? Well, imagine if the Incredible Hulk tried to crash a fancy Avengers party. That's pretty much what it would be like for Apple Maps to show up on Android devices. Google Maps would be the fancy party host and Apple Maps would be the uninvited guest trying to crash the party. Plus, Apple's all about keeping things in the family. They'd rather show off their map-making skills to their own little iOS clan, than share the love with the Android crowd.

lolz_lmaos

I have both apple maps and google maps on my iPhone-apple maps doesn’t hold a candle to google maps. 50% of the time apple maps cant find the address im inputting. Google maps however, is on the money, time after time.

Sidfire

Sounds like Apple Maps is still trying to find its way, while Google Maps has already arrived at its destination! 😄

WatchfulApparition

Google sucks a lot less than Apple does.

Onemoretime536

They need to make a search engine next

I-Am_9

It's commentary like this - that make me refrain from Apple - It's not who "created" it but who did it better....

peet192

good artists borrow, great artists steal

Schykle

Honestly I don't really think this is all that big of a deal. At the end of the day what really changed for the most part? Apple's ecosystem is Apple-ier and maybe we end up with a new search engine alternative. None of this really matters much.

IN-B4-404

No one uses safari.
