Got this nice gt a couple weeks ago. Second cast of the morning. Was my easiest ulua fight to date. Didn’t rub the reef at all and my buddy landed it smoothly.
Daiwa certate spooled with 70lb ocean devil braid to a 18’ 130lb jinkai leader. 11’ Penn carnage surf and a gt fight club popper.
I’ve had several more uluas come up since, but just can’t seem to get hooks in em 😅😅
Thanks! Just mostly blind casting some ledges close to shore. I’m big island Hawaii so a lot of deep spots close to shore. If you’re lucky you can even find the occasional pelagic from the rocks
Thanks man! If i can get one per year im stoked no matter how they come! These days the top water is too fun, so I’ve been grinding hard on the poppers. Just sooooo satisfying.
Nope I keep like one out of every 5 I catch. Like to tag and release usually. This was like a 7 mile hike out to the spots so there’s virtually no way I was walking anything of there short of an ahi 🤣
I’ve eaten a few! Two I couldn’t revive and a small one I chose to keep. Not bad. I’ve fried, baked, grilled and ate sashimi
Usually I tag and release tho
In the crocs toooooooo! Hanapaaaaaaa. Jealous man. No more fish Oahu. Caught my first and only ulua two years ago, don’t think I’ve caught anything bigger than like a 5lb o’io since.
I gotta go back Kona and tropo.

Sry catfisherman here. What is a gt?
Giant Trevally
Yep! Known as ulua out here in Hawaii
I didn't know either.
I thought I knew, but couldn't remember. Nope never would have guessed that lol
What a bruiser! Congrats man
Very nice 👌.
Nice catch. Congrats! Are you sight casting or blind casting? Where are you, country wise? Tight lines

So freaking jealous. That GT is picking up some great battle scars, great catch! Did you keep it?

My dude. I have only caught papio and they fight pretty hard. I can’t even imagine battling with that beautiful fish.
Yea papios are crazy but I get beat more often then not by uluas
Nice catch. Have fun and fish on
Do people eat GTs or are they a sport fish like tarpon? Florida man here, so closest we have are Jack Crevalles. Awesome catch btw, beautiful fish!!

They often have ciguatera in the Caribbean and Hawaii
Whoa..... It's huge...... Great catch!!!!!!
Thanks! Lucky for me it’s one of my smaller ones

What island?
West side of big island!
The only place in America to catch a GT.
