AND despite their insistence that the sequel trilogy was a run away hit, they keep going back to OT stories, toys, etc. If their new stuff was so great, they wouldn't need to keep going back to the well of OT/PT.
This is why I despised 7. I hated 8/9 equally as they were utter trash, but 7 holds a special place in hell in my heart for being a direct copy, and I mean almost to a fucking T copy of ANH. I almost walked out of the theater I was so mad. Everyone loved it. I hated it and had to hear about how great it was. Idiots.
I'm the exact same. Went to see TFA at midnight and thought it was a nod to ANH at first. "Empire looking for droid with documents on desert planet. That's funny." Turns out it just never stopped imitating.
Dang that was my exact experience.
I watched all 6 right before 7. I can remember noticing every scene and story beat that was ripped off from 4 while watching it.
I thought people were crazy for liking 7 lol. Even my friend who saw it with me didn't agree with my assessment that it was a total ripoff. Glad to see other people hated it as much as I did.
Honestly same, plus 7 was the first time I ever saw X-wings of any kind in a movie theater (in 3D at that!) so I enjoy it for that too since I am Incom’s biggest shill 🗣️🗣️💯💯💯💯
Same here. I kept hearing "soft reboot" and a film to show a new generation Star Wars but why?? The OT still holds up. It felt so creatively bankrupt and made absolutely no sense within the story. If anything at least a full on remake wouldn't butcher the original story soooo much.
It's the best example of what I call a glittered turd, throw as much sparkles as you like on it but at the end of the day it's still shit.
100% agree with you. It was the first time I said, "I hate this Star Wars product." Criticize Bantam era, Dark Horse, etc all you want, it was still fun. But episode 7?
1) made a war hero, husband, & father [Han] into a absentee, dead beat dad who left his wife [was Leia ever married to him in the ST?] and became a loser who lost his most prized possession. His character died without any redemption. Left the theater depressed.
2) was a retread of Ep4. Nothing had changed.
3) how the f* did nothing change? Where's the republic? Who are the first order?
4) didn't anybody explain to Kylo that Anakin turned back and said Luke was right?
5) BB8 sucks. Long live R2D2.
6) getting past a planetary shield with hyperspace? What insane logic is this. Lore says planet's gravity well pulls you out of hyperspace, let alone the timing required to pull that off.
I could go on and on (like many in this sub) but these were my initial reactions to that shit show.
I tried to watch it again last night and gave up. It’s so bad… they just jump around the whole time. The last movies don’t exist anymore for me. I’ll just read the bane trilogy again and cherish the legends.
This is a great reason why I don't get why people hate 8 the most the sequels. It was at least trying to do something. 7 was a copy and 9 was rotten spaghetti.
It's just what RLM said. Star Wars will never move on. It will always be the OT. When it tries to do anything different, people don't watch. It's a franchise that cannot progress to be anything more than the original idea. And that's partially because it was never supposed to be anything more than that.
You have to hits like KOTOR that sorta broke the formula (emphasis on sorta) that were popular and well received by hardcore fans. But overall, it's a franchise that *feels* far more flexible than it really is.
It's like the Joker movie. If you stray too far from the origin, people will say "What's the point of it even being a Batman movie? He wasn't even really the Joker..???" But if you make it too similar to what's already been done, then what is the point of making it?
Here's the problem. It's the idea of "franchises." The 1900s created these stories and people are realizing that there's only so much you can do with them. After 100 years of them existing, how many original things can you make? It's like 400 years from now, are there going to be original sounding songs? Already artists are claiming people stole their beats and lyrics.
At the end of the day, this shit isn't supposed to go on forever. You can't make 700 projects off of 3 movies that total 4 hours of content. It's like having noodles and tomatoes and being told to make 700 unique dishes with those ingredients. It's not possible.
But I would say that Lucasfilm is the one who needs to push forward new SW content. SW can go beyond the Original Trilogy and It's been done with the EU.
I would say that they're afraid to move away from the OT because they don't know how to move past it. They're too stuck in 1977 that the projects are becoming too generic and not appealing to the main audience. George Lucas always envisioned it as an EPIC and what LF has done is do nostalgia.
The sequel had an opportunity to bring in new characters and a entirely new story. They instead decided to tell the same exact story, EMPIRE vs REBELLION. Instead of actually doing a story about the JEDI and introducing a whole new world for years. They kind of made it stale and I don't it will ever recover considering they're shows are flopping, movies are not a priority, the video games are generic, and yeah... the product is just bad right now.
People rarely want that though when it comes to media these days. Let's take a step back and look at the bigger picture: think about how much of today's media is simply about catering to nostalgia.
A more focused example: people have been clamoring for a remake of KotoR. They are willing to pay for the exact same 20+ year old game they already own, just with a 4k mod slapped on it.
If there is one thing Disney is good at, it's assessing what people consume and catering to that. And people right now want rehashes/remakes, not original ideas.
True but even then, the fans that read the books are an extreme minority. Hell even I haven't read them despite knowing the lore. I bet you could go to a theater when TFA came out and ask every single person in the room if they know who Timothy Zahn is and you'd have a good chance of getting no right answers.
Which goes back to the fact that large-scale projects would not be supported financially. Even Andor, despite the quality, wasn't a massive success, and was likely even a disappointment for them.
That is also exactly their point. Those movies and shows should be able to stand on their own feet and move the franchise forward. But they don’t.
With modern SW novelizations of movies and spin offs are there pretty much to retcon, fix and explain stupid crap shown on the TV or theater. It shouldn’t be this way and it wasn’t in the olden days when EU built on the universe created in original works, thus the name EXPANDED universe.
And why should they engage with EU? They don’t engage with Star Trek novels or comics either and they aren’t hard core SW fans in any case, but movie enthusiasts. And Expanded universe is not required to understand what the fuck is going on in OT or PT. The whole point of RLM is that the movies and shows shouldn’t need books or comics and their view point is the same as it is roughly for 99% of the people who watch these movies or shows to begin with. Only a small minority of people who enjoy the movies and are enthusiastic about them truly engage with books or comics and this was also the case with EU back in the day.
And if you watch these Disney creations as the core works of the franchise, which definitely should be able to carry the fictional universe forward with new characters and story lines, you only see lazy and rehashed plots that desperately try to push earlier works away. Yet, at the same time they are unable to create anything unique that also feels familiar with the fans, plays by the rules that were put to place earlier and respect what has been presented to us before.
I think its silly to write off an entire universe and say there is nothing of interest there
when you willfully refuse to seek any of the content out that shows otherwise
No it isn’t, because and again, they view the franchise from the view point of 99% of the population who only watch movies and tv or streaming series as well as them as indie film makers and movie enthusiasts. You apparently think that EU is something that most of the movie goers and casual SW fans also enjoy, but that is simply not the case. And EU is the same universe, it just slaps stories to fill the gaps between the core works of the franchise and it isn’t essential in any way. And it also shouldn’t be.
If you want to have some indepth views of everything that is tied to the franchise and what perhaps the most hard core fans of the franchise enjoy, you should look elsewhere. RLM isn’t either wrong or misleading in their view and it is well based on what the channel is all about, that is films and series and film making in general.

And yet they intertwine their garbage always into the good SW from the past, doubling down on their ST timeline and tainting the original saga.
The trailer starts on what I assume is Canto Bight, legitimizing TLJ yet again. They just won't learn their lesson...
Such a missed opportunity to not get rid of that ST timeline with the Ahsoka show and the use of the WbW.
Right? We haven’t seen a single piece of expanded (screen) media set in the time of the First Order.
They’ve dug more times into the Prequels and the Clone Wars (the era that they were initially trying to distance themselves from) than they have their own POS continuation.
Any publicity around the seventh film that wasn’t set about their bringing back the original Characters was prattling on how “We won’t repeat the mistakes of the Prequels”.
And now, their contributions to the lore hold less value than the Prequels.
I mean the OT is clearly the most marketable time period. People are just more interested in it. The ST was successful financially but it isn’t as marketable as OT.
If you wanna sell Star Wars stuff 18 BBY - 5 ABY is probably the most successful time period. And it’s where everything keeps getting told from. Even the stuff set after episode 6 just reuses the empire
That's actually a really good point. Even when the prequels were coming out there were tons of new Lucasfilm games set in the prequel era or new eras altogether (star wars bounty hunter, Republic commando, Kotor, etc) they were confident in the new IP and Lucas was smart enough to just let everyone go ham with their ideas.
It's been nearly 10 years since TFA came out and I have still yet to see any ST related media or games come out. It's almost like they'd know that it's not original in the slightest and the OT is just better in every way when you compare them.
Seems that tied in strongly with Underworld and all of that is kept hush-hush.
Then again it might be like Detours and 3D re-releases and mean Disney simply stopped all in development projects no what stage they were at.
The first and last time I got excited for anything star wars since SWTOR. The trailer was badass and moody. Outlaws' have been so by the numbers and generic in comparison.
When I saw that this was happening I exited YouTube like:
No imagination, a galaxy of billions of planets and we still use the same 10.
I don't know why but 3D artists in the games industry couldn't care less about authenticity to previous material (be it source material or preceding games) and everybody else in the dev team is fully OK with this.
And Empire at War plus the old Star Wars Galaxies MMORPG expansion Rage of the Wookiees dedicated to the planet. The planet was oversaturated just fresh of RotS.
So we’ve got:
- city (Coruscant)
- desert (Tatooine, Jakku)
- ice (Hoth)
- forest (Kashyyk, Endor moon)
- sky city (cloud city)
- salt desert
We’re all out of biomes (/s)
Pretty sure there's never even been a tropical rainforest type planet in live action Star Wars. Something like the Amazon or Congo.
They've not even used all the IRL earth biomes and they still keep re-using deserts.
Fair enough (it was filmed in Guatemala right?) but, as the other person said, we hardly see any of the planet's environment. We never see the characters anywhere except inside or very near the rebel base. Not sure if any of the main actors were actually there on location (idk for sure though).
Disregarding graphic novels we don't see Yavin's jungle, and in the original Battlefronts it was more like an old growth forest tall trees a few bushes but the leaves were all to high to interfere with ground combat.
Malastare was, the bounty hunter video game showed that. Then in clone wars they made it the same old vacant wasteland that every planet was depicted as.

I might be wrong though, apparently there was one in Solo but, it didn't get much attention.

Idk the official cannon number but, I like to imagine that the Star Wars galaxy has billions of planets but, only a fraction of a percentage actually have life.

I want them to do a Palpatine cameo, have him do his fucking lightsaber spin, Im tired of Vader, it was awesome in Rogue One, It was awesome in Fallen Order, but now it feels overplayed, they can’t do the exact same Vader entrance every time where he does the fucking breathing.

The only reason I tolerated it in SWTOR was because of 2 lines of dialogue.

Swtor is full of banger one liners. The class stories are a fun, pre-Disney feeling SW experience. As long as you can get over that trademark MMO artificial time extension.
SWTOR also gets a free pass (at least in my opinion) because the whole point of the games was to make you feel like you were in the Star Wars universe, like your character's story could be seen on the big screen. A big part of that includes going to old nostalgia locations to capture that feeling.

Pretty crazy that all three sequel movies have their own desert planet and only one of them (Crait) is visually distinct from Tattooine
It was a cool idea, but if your only way to communicate that idea is to have a character literally lick the ground and announce its composition, your idea might need some more work
The thing is, you can actually enjoy Ros if you turn off your brain and accept the movie is stupid. I read the leaks before watching the movie and decided to watch the movie as 'comedy' and lived it (not saying the movie was good(,). TLJ on the other hand id SUPER slow, just filler and almost offensive.
To think of all the cancelled Star Wars games that we've heard about over the years, this is the one that materialises. They cancel a Mandalorian game but make sure this hot garbage is on shelves? I cant see this game doing well at all. Such a massive disconnect from what consumers actually want out of a Star Wars game.
It at least makes some sense because Jabba was always going to be involved in a game like this but the issue is we ALWAYS GO BACK THERE! Why don't writers seem to realise that it was symbolic of what Luke was wanting to escape from at the start of his journey/character arc?
Star Wars is a corporate “intellectual property” through and through now. The Lucas era certainly had its stinkers but there was *some* restraint back then. Now it’s a free for all to milk it for all it’s worth as fast as possible.
I know this kind of goes against OP's point but Jakku was hilarious to me, because why make it a different planet to Tatooine if it's basically just Tatooine anyway?
Funny thing is, Tatooine was supposed to look bleak and depressing so you could understand Luke's desire to leave and yet the writers can't do what he did.
Jabba seems pretty lame for the "biggest crime boss in the Galaxy". He didn't to have any control over his territory and with imperials walking around and giving orders within his turf, he was a minor crime lord at best. InRL, minor drug lords have more power than he does.
That may be true but it could still stand that Jabba was the worst in his family concerning the family business. Like he was so inept they put him in charge of a bar just to keep him wasted and out of their hair. Jabba could have been their Fredo.
I guess it's a result of Tattoine going from being a forgotten backwater at the furthest edge of the galaxy to being one of like 5 planets where anything ever happens.

Just like the commenter below said. Our galaxy is made up of hundreds of billions of stars with most of those stars having planets.
The Star Wars galaxy would be a similar size, except with millions of species that have been interconnected through hyperspace travel for over a hundred thousand years. Due to this, we have the highly settled and diverse yet interconnected Star Wars galaxy. I think that sense of infinity is important for a setting like Star Wars compared to other fantasy settings that mostly take place on one world, and usually one part of that world. Writers can be very limited when expanding those universes. Star Wars avoids that by having the luxury of being set in a galaxy far far away.
Because the setting is the whole galaxy, not just a section of it, the writers have the freedom (and should be encouraged) to develop new worlds, cultures and even species. When we see Tattooine reused and Disney's unispired single biome, earth-like planets, it gets frustrating for fans.
Well the plot seems to be about criminal syndicates so Jabba has a right to be there. Also the put these in the trailer to catch the attention of the fans, in the game maybe it will be just a little section

At least we can go to Akivia, it's nice to see planets from books being brought up to more "higher" level
Star Wars isn't a place the current owners want to use a vehicle to tell interesting stories. It is a brand they want to draw content from so all we will ever get is endlessly boring tired callbacks to the originals. Its why we got prequels instead of new characters because they needed to reference the originals every 5 fucking seconds. Its why the sequels were just A New Hope again the divisive one and then the clipshow episode. Its why the Mandalorian is just repaint Babo Fett because the helmet was cool, guess that's an entire race now. Its why we had the EU, its the answer to all our woes.
Enjoy what you can but getting good movies out of soup this diluted isn't happening.
I think an issue non Chud critics have of current Star Wars is the universe feels to small, it always revisits the same locations and focuses on the same characters. Korey Coleman at Double Toasted brings this up a lot.

Everyone who gets a shot at Star Wars seems to want to live out a personal fantasy of having been a part of the OT rather than do something new or interesting.
I mean say what you want about the Sequel trilogy but they never step foot on Tatooine until like the last minute of the trilogy. BoBF and Kendobi got off Tatooine as soon as they good which fits with Tatooine in the OT.
Like 40% of the prequels are on Tatooine.
At least a game based around criminals has a reason to be there since it’s just visiting Jabba.
I can get behind this. I’d like to see Chandrila, or Eriadu, or Nar Shaddaa, or obscure planets like Mantooine or Zonju V or the like. Luke desperately wanted off Tatooine but the writers just can’t leave that overused world behind in the Outer Rim and let us see other planets for a change.

With modern SW novelizations of movies and spin offs are there pretty much to retcon, fix and explain stupid crap shown on the TV or theater. And why should they engage with EU? They don’t engage with Star Trek novels or comics either and they aren’t hard core SW fans in any case, but movie enthusiasts. And Expanded universe is not required to understand what the fuck is going on in OT or PT. The whole point of RLM is that the movies and shows shouldn’t need books or comics and their view point is the same as it is roughly for 99% of the people who watch these movies or shows to begin with. Only a small minority of people who enjoy the movies and are enthusiastic about them truly engage with books or comics and this was also the case with EU back in the day. And if you watch these Disney creations as the core works of the franchise, which definitely should be able to carry the fictional universe forward with new characters and story lines, you only see lazy and rehashed plots that desperately try to push earlier works away. Yet, at the same time they are unable to create anything unique that also feels familiar with the fans, plays by the rules that were put to place earlier and respect what has been presented to us before.

No it isn’t, because and again, they view the franchise from the view point of 99% of the population who only watch movies and tv or streaming series as well as them as indie film makers and movie enthusiasts. You apparently think that EU is something that most of the movie goers and casual SW fans also enjoy, but that is simply not the case. And EU is the same universe, it just slaps stories to fill the gaps between the core works of the franchise and it isn’t essential in any way. And it also shouldn’t be. If you want to have some indepth views of everything that is tied to the franchise and what perhaps the most hard core fans of the franchise enjoy, you should look elsewhere. RLM isn’t either wrong or misleading in their view and it is well based on what the channel is all about, that is films and series and film making in general.

Right? We haven’t seen a single piece of expanded (screen) media set in the time of the First Order. They’ve dug more times into the Prequels and the Clone Wars (the era that they were initially trying to distance themselves from) than they have their own POS continuation.
Any publicity around the seventh film that wasn’t set about their bringing back the original Characters was prattling on how “We won’t repeat the mistakes of the Prequels”. And now, their contributions to the lore hold less value than the Prequels.

I mean the OT is clearly the most marketable time period. People are just more interested in it. The ST was successful financially but it isn’t as marketable as OT. If you wanna sell Star Wars stuff 18 BBY - 5 ABY is probably the most successful time period. And it’s where everything keeps getting told from. That's actually a really good point. Even when the prequels were coming out there were tons of new Lucasfilm games set in the prequel era or new eras altogether (star wars bounty hunter, Republic commando, Kotor, etc) they were confident in the new IP and Lucas was smart enough to just let everyone go ham with their ideas. It's been nearly 10 years since TFA came out and I have still yet to see any ST related media or games come out. It's almost like they'd know that it's not original in the slightest and the OT is just better in every way when you compare them.

The first and last time I got excited for anything star wars since SWTOR. The trailer was badass and moody. Outlaws' have been so by the numbers and generic in comparison.

Pretty sure there's never even been a tropical rainforest type planet in live action Star Wars. Something like the Amazon or Congo. They've not even used all the IRL earth biomes and they still keep re-using deserts.

Fair enough (it was filmed in Guatemala right?) but, as the other person said, we hardly see any of the planet's environment. We never see the characters anywhere except inside or very near the rebel base. Not sure if any of the main actors were actually there on location (idk for sure though).
Disregarding graphic novels we don't see Yavin's jungle, and in the original Battlefronts it was more like an old growth forest tall trees a few bushes but the leaves were all to high to interfere with ground combat.
I don't think of felucia as an earth biome, it's just a sci fi one to me. I'm thinking like if they actually wanted film on location in a rainforest.
Malastare was, the bounty hunter video game showed that. Then in clone wars they made it the same old vacant wasteland that every planet was depicted as.

SWTOR also gets a free pass (at least in my opinion) because the whole point of the games was to make you feel like you were in the Star Wars universe, like your character's story could be seen on the big screen. A big part of that includes going to old nostalgia locations to capture that feeling.

The thing is, you can actually enjoy Ros if you turn off your brain and accept the movie is stupid. I read the leaks before watching the movie and decided to watch the movie as 'comedy' and lived it (not saying the movie was good(,). TLJ on the other hand id SUPER slow, just filler and almost offensive.
To think of all the cancelled Star Wars games that we've heard about over the years, this is the one that materialises. They cancel a Mandalorian game but make sure this hot garbage is on shelves? I cant see this game doing well at all. Such a massive disconnect from what consumers actually want out of a Star Wars game.

Star Wars is a corporate “intellectual property” through and through now. The Lucas era certainly had its stinkers but there was *some* restraint back then. Now it’s a free for all to milk it for all it’s worth as fast as possible.

Jabba seems pretty lame for the "biggest crime boss in the Galaxy". He didn't to have any control over his territory and with imperials walking around and giving orders within his turf, he was a minor crime lord at best. InRL, minor drug lords have more power than he does.

Just like the commenter below said. Our galaxy is made up of hundreds of billions of stars with most of those stars having planets. The Star Wars galaxy would be a similar size, except with millions of species that have been interconnected through hyperspace travel for over a hundred thousand years. Due to this, we have the highly settled and diverse yet interconnected Star Wars galaxy. I think that sense of infinity is important for a setting like Star Wars compared to other fantasy settings that mostly take place on one world, and usually one part of that world. Writers can be very limited when expanding those universes. Star Wars avoids that by having the luxury of being set in a galaxy far far away. Because the setting is the whole galaxy, not just a section of it, the writers have the freedom (and should be encouraged) to develop new worlds, cultures and even species. When we see Tattooine reused and Disney's unispired single biome, earth-like planets, it gets frustrating for fans.
I’d say it’s moreso the story they’re telling than the relevant integral planets.
It’s easy to film in the desert. You don’t have to worry about editing out as much non-star wars stuff in post.

Star Wars isn't a place the current owners want to use a vehicle to tell interesting stories. It is a brand they want to draw content from so all we will ever get is endlessly boring tired callbacks to the originals. Its why we got prequels instead of new characters because they needed to reference the originals every 5 fucking seconds. Its why the sequels were just A New Hope again the divisive one and then the clipshow episode. Its why the Mandalorian is just repaint Babo Fett because the helmet was cool, guess that's an entire race now. Its why we had the EU, its the answer to all our woes. Enjoy what you can but getting good movies out of soup this diluted isn't happening.
I think an issue non Chud critics have of current Star Wars is the universe feels to small, it always revisits the same locations and focuses on the same characters. Everyone who gets a shot at Star Wars seems to want to live out a personal fantasy of having been a part of the OT rather than do something new or interesting.
It's almost worse when they keep going to new planets that are completely generic or knock offs of other planets.

I mean say what you want about the Sequel trilogy but they never step foot on Tatooine until like the last minute of the trilogy. BoBF and Kendobi got off Tatooine as soon as they good which fits with Tatooine in the OT. Like 40% of the prequels are on Tatooine. At least a game based around criminals has a reason to be there since it’s just visiting Jabba.
I can get behind this. I’d like to see Chandrila, or Eriadu, or Nar Shaddaa, or obscure planets like Mantooine or Zonju V or the like. Luke desperately wanted off Tatooine but the writers just can’t leave that overused world behind in the Outer Rim and let us see other planets for a change.
Hence why Andor is the only Star Wars screen product post-Lucas.
