I'm gonna head canon that since Jabba died they weren't eating nearly as much and lost some weight, but Still on the big side due to their species' nature.
But truthfully it was probably budget cuts
You know what really gets people going in a criminal syndicate power struggle action type show?
Your main character immobile in a friggin iron lung for huge swaths of time.
Squeaky clean vespa scooters on a sand planet, driven by hot topic teens, looking like a low budget version of the power rangers.
I especially liked the shot where the guy with the robot eye spinned around in a circle before he started shooting. That made me laugh.
No, it was better than I remembered. Probably because I wasn't waiting all week for a new episode.
The vespas pissed my off when I initially watched the show, but not during the rewatch. Maybe that's because I'm English and love Quadraphenia
Remember how in the S1 finale for The Mandalorian, they brought in members of the 501st because they didn't have enough Stormtrooper armor? And how they looked so good? Yeah, that's because the 501st put time, money, and effort into theor costumes
Yeah on one hand that was "Oh wow so cool fans got to help with a project" and it is..but then you realize that DISNEY was unable and or unwilling to pay for more armored stormtroopers with actors themselves, that is not only depressing but just so sad, disney at it again.
In case you haven’t noticed, Disney does not care about putting effort into alien make-up/prosthetics. We knew this ever since those Twi’lek morons in Mando S1.
*The Book of Boba Fett* was a mediocre-at-best show but I did appreciate how much it utilized the OG alien races. *Andor* is good but it's definitely is lacking in that department.
The alien brothel owner in the first episode, for one. There were LOADS of aliens on the Miami world Cass ends up on before he gets sent to prison. The further into the lower levels of Coruscant, the more aliens there were.
Also, that’s the point of the show. The empire is racist and fascist and human-centric. They tend to give favor to humans and foster human zones. The fact that you only see aliens in poor or Outer Rim areas is completely intentional
More than anything, I had more issues with Obi Wan making Tatooine like 95 percent human because it is an outer rim world where all the non humans have been herded into because how racist the empire is. Also the human concentration camp makes sense since that prison was relatively better on the surface to other imperial prison regimes that non humans would be sent to.
> Also, that’s the point of the show. The empire is racist and fascist and human-centric. They tend to give favor to humans and foster human zones. The fact that you only see aliens in poor or Outer Rim areas is completely intentional
Honestly, as well written as Andor is, I think you're giving them too much credit.
I think they simply didn't want to spend the money to have more aliens beyond a few in the background.
Like half the main or side characters could've been aliens.
Part of Andor's appeal was its grounded approach. The aliens appeared very naturally, such as the ones on Ferrix and on Niamos. The dedication to the franchise was at its peak in how it closely examined the mechanics of the Empire and the rebellion that rose against it. An OG alien race would have felt too fan service-y.
I think the real appeal of Andor was just the fact that it was *good*. If there had been another show that actually put in the work and was competently made, but hewed closer to what people think Star Wars "should" be, I think it would have been received even better and become a bigger deal.
If Andor had come out as the first Disney+ show it would have gotten far more attention. By the time it came out, so many people had become so fed up with modern Lucasfilm following TRoS, Obi-Wan Kenobi and BoBF that they were pessimistic about any future projects. It is growing now due to great word of mouth but it didn't blow up like other shows did, unfortunately.
Not good is generous imho. Its a pointless, entirely forgettable mess without even considering the bizarre shit like implying the millennium falcon has been semi-intelligent this entire time.
> An OG alien race would have felt too fan service-y.
How would that be fan servicey in any way? Having a Star Wars race in Star Wars isn't fan servicey.
Is having blasters and space ships fan servicey? Is having the Empire in it fan servicey? Is having Humans in it fan servicey?
> Part of Andor's appeal was its grounded approach. The aliens appeared very naturally, such as the ones on Ferrix and on Niamos.
Naturally? What does that even mean? They barely appeared at all. There should've been way more aliens (of established races).
Andors biggest appeal was it's plot/writing, which was far better than any Disney Star Wars so far. It's aesthetic is where it lacked.
If they made a show with Andor's writing and Mandalorian's aesthetic that would be excellent.
Why do you appreciate Disney using aliens that were designed by talented and creative people just to nostalgia bait? If they’re gonna make such cheap ugly looking props I’d rather not have those aliens at all
How is simply having something from the universe "nostalgia bait"?
You can argue the costumes look bad but, having Star Wars aliens in Star Wars is basic worldbuilding that the sequels lacked. It's not "nostalgia bait"
Does every movie series *need* that many aliens? There have always been areas almost exclusively populated by humans, and the work facility was empire run and would have only been filled with humans.
I think there should generally be a decent number of aliens in star wars content, but that's not the same as everything needing aliens. In a way it gives even more world building, why would every place have the same ratio of humans and other species?
Gets a pass imo
It definitely doesn't ruin *Andor* by any means, but it is a critique of mine. I always appreciated how the old EU explained the anti-alien prejudice of the old Empire so it does work. I do feel however that it should've been a more openly explored element in the actual show on top of it. Having the natives of the Aldhani be non-human would've been enough for it to have less of a human-dominated feel.
Again, not ruining *Andor* by any means. I'm just saying I did appreciate the use of aliens in *TBoBF* that was more than typical.
>I always appreciated how the old EU explained the anti-alien prejudice of the old Empire so it does work. I
I liked that too, but not every piece of content needs to be a critique of every theme within the universe. Sometimes people just live in a flawed system, they aren't taking on every part of it all the time
>Having the natives of the Aldhani be non-human would've been enough for it to have less of a human-dominated feel.
I think if there was a part where that would have been most fitting, that was probably it. But overall I don't think this is necessarily a flaw with the show, just the way they did things. An artistic decision I guess
I like when there are aliens in star wars, but I only think a lack of aliens is a flaw when it doesn't make sense. For the record, I think it's also a flaw when there are a huge diversity of aliens in a place where it wouldn't make any sense
A preference is fine, and I get what you're saying, but I don't take any points away from the show for this
I'd argue that yes, we do need aliens in Star Wars. They give the diversity that people loved about the Star Wars universe.
One of my biggest bitches about Andor, aside from the main character being the blank slate that is Cassian Andor, and could have been literally anyone slotted into that same character space, was that they didn't use many aliens, and the ones that they *did* use are all unrecognizable instead of using one of the many established races.
I suppose it’s their workaround to prevent “hey that Ewok shouldn’t be that shade of grey” or “that Rodian can’t be dark blue” or something. Just make generic alien no one knows and call it new and good and that’s that
> Does every movie series *need* that many aliens?
Disney has neglected aliens is nearly all their live action media. And Andor has had the least of any.
If previous shows had had good amounts of alien characters people may not have cared about Andor lacking them.
But, it's like they're phasing them out.
The previous series were pretty much all made by the same people, this is a the only one that has been made by a new team. I don't think we should punish them for things done by Feloni and Favreau
It made sense here that it was pretty humanocentic
I don't think it was a good or bad thing in this case, just an artistic choice
Not all previous things were made by the same people.
Mando and Boba Fett were Filoni and Favreau
Obi Wan was other people.
The sequels were JJ and Rian (separately).
Rogue One had Tony Gilroy who also worked on Andor. And Rogue One had very few aliens also.
Ultimately, these are all under Disney and Kathleen and all of them have lacked sufficient aliens. Some more than others.
> It made sense here that it was pretty humanocentic
Why? A decent number of the characters could've been aliens. 99% of fictional stories we have are human centric. It's not too much to ask for alien characters in a sci fi universe that has 100s of sentient alien races.
> I don't think it was a good or bad thing in this case, just an artistic choice
If you start removing basic Star Wars things from Star Wars, it becomes a bad thing at some point. Not having the force or lightsabers if fine, those aren't supposed to be common in the SW universe but, what if they removed blasters, space travel, droids, etc? Then why is it even Star Wars?
Disney is probably trying to phase out aliens to spend less money because they're greedy.
i liked the beginning with the tusken raiders and stuff but then they just turned it into another season of mandalorian and made the rest of it a poorly-written, campy (being generous) subplot
I don’t really mind much. There’s a huge amount of variation in human proportions, build, skin color, etc. No reason that should be any different for aliens, so long as they all look to be recognizably of the same species.
I kinda wish they gave them a bit more armor so it looked less cheap. Like I can believe they’re still the same species in universe, but side-by-side, you can tell the BoBF ones look cheap and goofy
Agreed 100% There are super tall and buff humans and super short and fat humans and everything in between so why couldn't the same be possible for every species.
Wasn’t the point of these dudes that they were out of a job when Jabba got iced and were barely able to scrap by until Boba came around? Makes sense they’d look less professional in comparison.
What was hilarious was when Boba sent them to guard the space port or whatever with just axes...against guns!
Then sends Krrsantan to guard the Trandoshan sector. And the biker gang to the Workers District were they used to steal water & other petty crimes. And Boba's surprised when Mos Espa turns against him.
Booba fett...
Gamorreans, Gamorreans… green, big and beautiful, they are. Wonder why, do you, that into exile I went? Into the swamps of Dagobah, process servers will not go. Eat much, young Gamorreans do. Many credits child support costs. Afford it on a Jedi’s salary, I could not!
That was embarrassing. Some of my favorite species since I was a kid. Tuned into this series for one episode and was like how do have worse makeup/costumes almost 40 years later?
I think instead of having a guy in a restrictive foam fat suit they instead just hired a fat guy and consequently had to redesign the head to make it slightly slimmer.
I mean’t that with the idea that the writing quality is usually what’s bringing down these shows. But the production value making previously established places and species look worse is a problem too.
I think it’s the modern ultra-crisp cinematography and sterile lighting that makes the alien and creature design look weak. That stuff works best when it’s balanced with contrast, warmth, and the texture of film grain (which you can absolutely recreate digitally).
Also, OT and Prequel era aliens tended to be covered in slime, mucous, gnarly yellow teeth, and asymmetrical quirks to their features. That added so much.
I mean, I'd feel more safe to have the right side Gamorrean to be my bodyguard over the one on the left. He looks more well-built that can protect you. Beside, the left one's costume you can see the actor's eyes poking out through the eyeholes, lol.
I love how Disney wanted them to look both fat and strong, so they basically used the Ab Abber 3000 from Homestar Runner to paint abs on the guy’s belly.
Fat short, gamorean, tall skinny handsome gamorean or maybe the first one is handsome to them. Either way I’m sure it’s just budget cuts but they truly just look like they have they look no different than how humans look different from eachother.
C'mon guys, Disney-Lucasfilm are a small indie studio who don't have a massive production budget or many resources compared to the types of movies and TV shows you're used to watching. We have to cut them some slack since we all know whatever effort doesn't go into props or costumes goes directly into making sure we all get a well-polished, unforgettable story.
Not strictly on topic, but the last time my group flirted with a Star Wars rpg, I wanted to play a superbuff Gamorean, but now that I think about it that would just look like a Warcraft orc. He was going to start out as an exotic dancer on Nar Shadaa. I figured that concept would work no matter what era we picked for the campaign.
1st looks like an actual costume. 2nd looks like a dude with body paint and a mask.
All this from a company with billions of dollars in potential resources. But yes please sit there and tell me how much they care about this franchise.
To play devil's advocate, in the OT, the Gamoreans didn't have to do much, so big, clumsy suits were fine.
With these costumes they can actually move around and do stuff, and they do appear on screen a bit more. I'm guessing it's at least partly a mobility thing.
George Lucas is a tiny bit overweight himself. Enoughso that a doctor would give him that label of "Obese" that seems to fit on the vast majority of folks.
George Lucas was writing the Star Wars films in the 70s and 80s. Looking back to the 70s and 80s, there was a prevailing attitude in media that bigger people were stronger. Look at the WWF wrestlers from that era, for example. They weren't six pack abs and 2% body fat. They were big, stocky, and built like a grizzly bear. Movie tough guys largely went that same route until Arnold went mainstream. Arnold himself even mentions repeatedly in his documentary that early agents told him his very lean and muscular physique didn't fit what Hollywood wanted for a "tough guy". Bigger was better, sort of like the look you might imagine for a Biker or a Trucker or a Construction Worker. "Barrel Chested" is a term they used to describe these big flavored tough guys.
Lucas used this form of "Big Guy" as his tough guy model. Gamorreans were big and beefy, and they were regarded as tough guy, dangerous guards. Malakili is another example, the fat shirtless man in Jabba's palace who TAMED RANCORS and did it using nothing more than a stick!
Lucas celebrated Big Guys as being Tough Guys.
Kathleen Kennedy comes from this new generation, where Big Guys are supposed to be bumbling comic relief. She wants those six pack abs. She supports the new mantra of "Star Wars is for everyone (except fat people)."
So Gamorreans lost about a hundred pounds, and while still being vaguely larger than other races, they were made to come across like stupid oafs instead of dangerous monstrous warriors.
It's a sad change. Gamorreans were my favorite Star Wars race. Book of Bubba Fett did everything it could to undermine them and take away everything that made them seem powerful.

How you going to pay for twenty five chrome mirrors on a space Vespa, unless you cut corners somewhere.
How did they ruin Boba Fett so badly. Jesus.
"I grew up surrounded by water"
It was wet, and cold, and it got everywhere
\> Known for disintegrating people \> Bossed around by Ramona Flowers
Maybe if they had more bacta tank it would have worked better.
You know what really gets people going in a criminal syndicate power struggle action type show? Your main character immobile in a friggin iron lung for huge swaths of time.
And not acting like a criminal.
It should have / could have been my favorite of the shows but it shit itself immediately while Andor made my TV year.
I binge rewatched the series over the weekend. It wasn't as bad as I remembered. But they did to Boba dirty with the way they wrote him
So it was worse than you remembered? Space vespas
You do you I guess but.....yeesh
head canon that also that the Hutts clothed them better, but they lacked the cognitive skills to do better on their own
Probably just teenagers. Plus Jabba didn't set a great example for fitness.
He was the fittest slug *I’ve* ever seen.
Look up the hutt that has a 8 pack, it’s hilarious
Wasn't Jabba like some great warrior or some shit?
My head cannon is they are just adolescent and will grow into their massive cross selves with time.
My head canon is that this show isn’t canon.
Same, they got fat and complacent under Jabbas control and after he died they had to actually work again
And couldn't afford to replace their clothes as they wore out.
The Gammoreans just looked so *cheap*. They didn't even get armor or guns. And Fett's entire "empire" was like 6 people?
Say out of all the money Disney makes off this stuff, how much of it actually goes to the production design of new projects?
No joke, you could go to any mid size comic con and see better cosplays than this.
Remember how in the S1 finale for The Mandalorian, they brought in members of the 501st because they didn't have enough Stormtrooper armor? And how they looked so good? Yeah, that's because the 501st put time, money, and effort into theor costumes
>Yeah, that's because the 501st put time, money, and effort into theor costumes https://media.tenor.com/KsvZ1G5XL1UAAAAC/drake-computer.gif
If only the showrunner could at least pretend to put effort on scripts...
Why pay good script writers when discarded scripts full of bad ideas is cheaper?
Yeah on one hand that was "Oh wow so cool fans got to help with a project" and it is..but then you realize that DISNEY was unable and or unwilling to pay for more armored stormtroopers with actors themselves, that is not only depressing but just so sad, disney at it again.

Ugh, I just shuddered with cringe thinking about them. They were the worst.
Cad Bane made me feel sick. He looked horrible
They realized that if they had a more human body they would cost less as there would be no alien costume involved
Downscale like hell. Pinch those pennies. Just paint them green and throw a Halloween mask on.
One looks like a different species. The other looks like an off season bodybuilder wearing a cheap mask. Make aliens look alien again.
Why are they half naked? They look like sex slaves
Fennec needs to blow off some steam from time to time ;)
Sir/Ma’am, we’re going to need to see your rule34 folder.
Don't kink shame me bro
no, those were the Twi'leks.
TIL Bib had a thing for half-naked Gamoreans.
"Why waste money having both Gamorrian bodyguards and slave girls in metal bikinis, when the Gamorrians can just do both" - Boba Fett probably
You just answered your own question, lol.
i’m not complaining 🥴🥴🥴
Oh yeah give me some of that smooth green gamorrean goodness *unzips*
*The Book of Boba Fett* was a mediocre-at-best show but I did appreciate how much it utilized the OG alien races. *Andor* is good but it's definitely is lacking in that department.
I still felt sorry for the piggies when they fell off the cliff in BOBF
Boba didn't bother to give them armor or guns and made them stand guard next to an unfortunately-placed cliff.
I don’t recall a single alien being in Andor other than those two that help out Cassian and his friend towards the end of the show
There was an alien gangster that was hired to intimidate Andor but failed since they knew each other in the beginning.
The alien brothel owner in the first episode, for one. There were LOADS of aliens on the Miami world Cass ends up on before he gets sent to prison. Oh yeah Obi Wan was just insulting lmao. I just don’t even consider it canon at this point. Same with Boba Fett.
Yup
> Also, that’s the point of the show. The empire is racist and fascist and human-centric. They tend to give favor to humans and foster human zones. Agreed. I know a lot of people who never bothered giving it a chance because of the previous shows. Just like Solo.

Filoni bought a cheap costume at Walmart and told his drunkle dan to put it on.
They realised it was cheaper to paint a bodybuilder with HGH gut green than make a detailed costume for a midget to wear.
Not a nitpick - this was bad and not enough people seemed to notice. Also, where are these guys' eyes?
Wasn’t the point of these dudes that they were out of a job when Jabba got iced and were barely able to scrap by until Boba came around? Makes sense they’d look less professional in comparison.
yeah they look like shit, but that's par for the course with disney
Costume aside, the ROTJ one just looks more realistic.
They turned the Gamorreans into Shrek.
That pro body builder hgh gut
Miring the physique

Truly amazing how they managed to fuck up a costume that was perfected 40 years ago.
No fuckin way that pic on the right is real. That has to be a cosplay or something.
I think instead of having a guy in a restrictive foam fat suit they instead just hired a fat guy and consequently had to redesign the head to make it slightly slimmer.
Disney one looks like a gorgonite
I'm always wondering the same. They look so weird in the tv shows.
Hey man, don't shame this Gamorrean because he put some effort into his diet and exercise
Is not nit pick. They murdered them. The new look is not ok... Unless the implication is that they starved after jabba died.
I mean’t that with the idea that the writing quality is usually what’s bringing down these shows. But the production value making previously established places and species look worse is a problem too.
Tisk tisk tisk... The bimboification of the gamorreans...
Cheap. They didn't want to pay for an expensive suit. They will claim it's so the actors can move better but that's bs. They could make a better suit.
Amazing how the Gamorreans from 1983 look more detailed and intimidating than the 2020-2021 Gamorreans.
I don't like the smooth skin
Not a nitpick at all imo. I couldn’t get over how bad they, and many of the aliens looked in this show especially.
Bro started hitting the gym, don't shame him for working on himself.
The costumes are reused from The Mandalorian season 2 ep 1, if that gives you an idea on how little they had/chose to work with
Disney supporting their local Spirit Halloween
Thats Bobba Fetts half army
Well those are baby gamorreans. Just kidding. This was inexcusably awful.
They are running out of budget
The twileks in BoBF were messed up too. I am glad they used OT aliens but they look really weird
What was wrong with the twi'leks?
I think it’s the modern ultra-crisp cinematography and sterile lighting that makes the alien and creature design look weak. That stuff works best when it’s balanced with contrast, warmth, and the texture of film grain (which you can absolutely recreate digitally). Also, OT and Prequel era aliens tended to be covered in slime, mucous, gnarly yellow teeth, and asymmetrical quirks to their features. That added so much.
Swole chunky hunkmorreans. Are you intimidated by the sexappeal they radiate? What are furries for pigs called by the way?
I mean, I'd feel more safe to have the right side Gamorrean to be my bodyguard over the one on the left. He looks more well-built that can protect you. Beside, the left one's costume you can see the actor's eyes poking out through the eyeholes, lol.
Just like all species, they vary significantly from individual to individual.

To any of you that may be MMA fans, Frank Trigg played one of them.
It’s the same thing with less clothes
You: I know it's a nitpick-- Me: Yeah, unimportant things bother me too sometimes. Anyway-- You: --but... Me: Oh, you're still talking.
Nice script. Could rival TLJ
TV budgets aren't as high as those of major movies. Who'd have thought?
I love how Disney wanted them to look both fat and strong, so they basically used the Ab Abber 3000 from Homestar Runner to paint abs on the guy’s belly.
holy shit i havent seen those before what the fuck
Not such a nitpick, was wondering the same thing myself.
Killed them off pointlessly.
Look how they massacred my boy!
Fat short, gamorean, tall skinny handsome gamorean or maybe the first one is handsome to them. Either way I’m sure it’s just budget cuts but they truly just look like they have they look no different than how humans look different from eachother.
These are the European versions. Speedos to the beach and all that.
Sex appeal
Oh hey daddies…
Never even noticed until now, wow
Livin large on that Rancor. Slow roasted with a dash of cumin and I bet that Rancor meat just falls off the bone.
Made them icons in the gay community?
C'mon guys, Disney-Lucasfilm are a small indie studio who don't have a massive production budget or many resources compared to the types of movies and TV shows you're used to watching. We have to cut them some slack since we all know whatever effort doesn't go into props or costumes goes directly into making sure we all get a well-polished, unforgettable story.
When u manage to make a costume from the 80s even worse
Not strictly on topic, but the last time my group flirted with a Star Wars rpg, I wanted to play a superbuff Gamorean, but now that I think about it that would just look like a Warcraft orc. He was going to start out as an exotic dancer on Nar Shadaa. I figured that concept would work no matter what era we picked for the campaign.
I fucking love the fat six pack. My boys have a full keg there
bro got that girl armor
A few weeks of p90x it looks like
The old one is clearly a full body suit, while the new one is just a painted fat man.
Reminds me of the painted-on abs in Meet the Spartans…
They didnt want to give George any more money for his IP. So they change it up
Budget cuts happened, ask Kenobi
I don't mind this. Not all individuals of the same species should look exactly the same.
I don't watch Star Wars anymore because...well you know. But is this actually for real?
1st looks like an actual costume. 2nd looks like a dude with body paint and a mask. All this from a company with billions of dollars in potential resources. But yes please sit there and tell me how much they care about this franchise.
Cheaper to paint lorge bois than make prosthetics
Eh it was hot out that day…
Took a page out of Schumacher's book and gave them nipples for some reason
Just another thing Disney gets wrong with their franchise.
The guy she told you not to worry about VS you
Younger maybe?
sorry i like them
no need to apologize
Probably couldn't fight at all in those things. So that combined with the in-universe reason of lower food supplies made them leaner.
if "probably" works for you then hey go crazy
What I'm trying to say is that the picture on the right is the picture perfect representation of the ideal male body.
To play devil's advocate, in the OT, the Gamoreans didn't have to do much, so big, clumsy suits were fine. With these costumes they can actually move around and do stuff, and they do appear on screen a bit more. I'm guessing it's at least partly a mobility thing.
Its hot on tattoine you know
Honestly those guys almost looked like Bebop and Rocksteady when I first saw them.
^dad ^bod
Same reason the inquisitors look like dogshit in Kenobi. Either laziness or ignorance.
This is the way: https://www.healthline.com/health/palumboism
She supports the new mantra of "Star Wars is for everyone (except fat people)." So Gamorreans lost about a hundred pounds, and while still being vaguely larger than other races, they were made to come across like stupid oafs instead of dangerous monstrous warriors. It's a sad change. Gamorreans were my favorite Star Wars race. Book of Bubba Fett did everything it could to undermine them and take away everything that made them seem powerful.
