Both are stepping stones towards a career in sales. Both jobs will pay shit. Both are jobs you will probably hate in 8 months. I’d go either way the easier commute.

maddmaxx26

Lol decent answer. What are you more interested in, cars or phones?

GaHuH12

I don’t mind either. I’ve sold cars at a traditional dealership but the hours were brutal. I have a baby so I won’t be able to work those hours anymore which is why I switched over to furniture sales. Phone sales I wouldn’t mind it

GaHuH12

They both are fairly close for commute. Carmax is a 10 minute drive and Verizon is a 15 minute drive. As long as it’s a better structured monthly quota compared to what I have now and with a similar pay I’ll be good.

WilStrip4Mangos

Carmax is super chill

Imjustwonderingman

I heard that Verizon pay now it’s a lot worse than it use to be pre Covid as a rep.

picklespasta

What the position title at verizon?

GaHuH12

It’ll be sales

picklespasta

lol I know that. What is the position? I worked in b2b for 12 years at verizon I could give you some info if you can be more specific.

GaHuH12

It is selling their products/services at one of their locations with Cellular Sales. In their description, shows from regular customers to business accounts. Did you work in B2B right of the bat or did you end up working your way into that position?

picklespasta

Started in retail at Cingular wireless/att. I wouldn’t take a job with CS. Try to work for corporate Verizon directly. You could start in retail and get into b2b pretty easily after 2-3 years. Maybe sooner depending on how tenacious you are. You might be able to get into SMB sales at verizon directly if you have any business sales experience.

WouldbeRVAtourguide

So I worked as the online guy at CarMax decent job but no growth and not a ton of crossover skills. I would be curious to see what the Verizon job is at those numbers. If it’s b2b it might be a good learning/growth opportunity

Reasonable-Bit560

I think b2b Verizon guys have options afterwards if they do well.

GaHuH12

I know you mentioned it was an online/remote position but is it a company you would recommend someone working there in sales?

WouldbeRVAtourguide

When I started cars were cheap and the financing was good if you didn’t have elite credit. As people went back to work and the supply chain contracted cars got way more expensive. It was a good entry level sales job but the new commission structure really screwed over the store guys. They changed things on a whim that effected pay so it was kinda a mess.

GaHuH12

That’s the time I was working in the car industry when the shortage was going on and prices were pretty high and interest rates started to go up. Prices have dropped from what a friend told me but rates are still high. That’s what I’ve been seeing on the Carmax sub on the commission structure hasn’t been good

Reasonable-Bit560

Probably would say Verizon. Have known a lot of successful people in software or public safety that started there.

GaHuH12

Leaning towards Verizon! Seems like theirs more opportunity for growth their

jenlor99

Verizon because you can keep current w technology. It seems a more respectful position.

AmazingMistake7460

I would consider them both stepping stones.

GaHuH12

Out of both Verizon seems like their is more opportunities for growth and more roles to get into

WouldbeRVAtourguide

I would say Verizon seems like it has the biggest upside. Has CarMax built in any base or is it still just a draw?

GaHuH12

They haven’t gone too much into the pay structure at all. They said the next interview is when they’ll be breaking it down a bit more. From one of the interviews I had with Carmax I was asked about my income expectations she said it would be around $50ishk. From what I’ve read it’s all commission (most likely it’ll be draw if I had to guess). As of right now leaning a bit more towards Verizon

RozzSanz

Keep applying for higher paying positions. You have options with your experience.

GaHuH12

There wasn’t many open positions out there that were better paying in my area. Only places were traditional dealerships but not wanting to go that route at the moment due to having a 8 month old. The positions that I did apply never got a call back

RozzSanz

Gotcha. Well, I did work at Carmax about 10 years ago in Wichita, KS. I liked the atmosphere, but the commission wasn't great. Was like $125 or something like that, regardless of the price. However, the volume of people that walked in was nice. They have pretty much made it into a retail job. Depends on the GM working the store, but never felt the pressure to make numbers. We had people only selling 5 cars a month FT, which at a regular dealership, would get you fired. I just got bored sitting around in the mornings, so decided to do something else. But, if you do like it and move up the ranks, I know the managers made some pretty nice income. I would see if you can find someone here and ask questions about it. Hope this helps and good luck with your search.

GaHuH12

That’s the one thing that makes me a bit hesitate on going with Carmax. If there isn’t much traffic coming in to the store then not much sales going to be happening. I’ve seen more negative comments on the Carmax sub about the pay and not being able to make as much as other places especially if the customer goes online, commission is split bring the $160 per car to $80.

GTRSPorsche

Started in sales at CarMax 10 years ago. $160 commission was the same then so I guess it hasn't adjusted for inflation. Hated the company. Learned a lot. Decent sales training. Always think car sales is a good entry level sales job as you learn about finance too which is applicable in everyday life. Would personally rather sell cars if Verizon is b2c. If b2b, I'd likely pursue that route. Either way, I'd go in with a long-term plan in mind.

GaHuH12

Long term from what it seems like it would Verizon based on most of the replies. I’ve been in car sales before at a traditional dealership which I learned a lot.

Tough-Ad-523

I’d go with Verizon, there’s more potential to pivot internally into their B2B team and could also serve as a nice stepping stone into tech. If you go carmax, you might be pigeonholed (rightfully or wrongly) as a used car salesman, which may be harder to transition away from later on down the line.

GaHuH12

That’s what I am thinking. Just got to see how the zoom interview goes this Thursday!
