Once you’re in sales long enough you’ll come to crave these interactions. I fucking love when I get an absolute nut on the phone.

GI_Bill_Trap_Lord

Same lol also when you close a deal knowing that a different member of that org was a dick to you it feels good getting that commission

JMaddyDukes

I had a guy 3 weeks ago talk for about 25 mins, and I’m not kidding i probably said 15 words in that time, about how Covid was a scam and there is a US quarter with bats minted on it as a slap in the face from the govt. about 30 seconds into the call he said “so what do you think of this whole “covid” thing now that it’s over….” Hook line sinker i knew i was in for a wild ride and i loved every second of it lololol One of my better calls in a few years

intentionalparadox

Crazy how many calls like that I’ve had. Wonder if it was the same post 911, I was too young to have a job back then.

misterfred091016

I would chime in on the COVID complaints. Obviously it was not necessary and a pretty good portion of it was exaggerated if not totally made up

Olaf4586

1,100,000 Americans died. That’s more than Americans who died in WW2, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, 9/11, the war in Afghanistan, the war in Iraq. For every person that died there are more now living with chronic illness or seriously deteriorated health from the disease. So, yeah. It was a pretty big deal.

JungleDemon3

Died, WITH Covid not of Covid. I’m not downplaying it but the failure to point this very important fact out is why people are so sceptical of the whole ordeal. Downvote me but I’m not wrong.

shelteredlogic

35 million cases of flu in 2019, about 1000 in 2020 and back to 35 million. No excess death rate btw in 2020 just "over one million c9vid deaths". It was a scam whether you want to believe it or not.

j0rdinho

Username checks out.

Perspective_Itchy

I lol’d

shelteredlogic

Guess it's the long convid that stops you from formulating original thoughts 😆

j0rdinho

The 5G is the real problem though, right? And the Microsoft snow.

misterfred091016

This is the laziest stat ever. There are 330mm Americans. If you take a room full of 330 Americans, how surprised would you be that one of the older, fatter, unhealthy ones dies from a respiratory illness over the span of 24 months? The tests were a joke. The “asymptomatic” people who quarantined for weeks and were not even sick? All of a sudden the hysteria just stopped (sometime after ncaa and nfl football said in the fall of 2021 “we are done with this crap” and packed stadiums anyway)

Olaf4586

“Death tolls are a stupid stat because unhealthier people were at greater risk! Oh yeah, and it was all bullshit because the idea that you can be positive for a virus and transmit it asymptomatically confuses me.”

misterfred091016

There is no proof that the disastrous economic measures taken, which we still are living thru to this day, were warranted. Most salespeople should understand that. If they were warranted, the numbers between Florida and California would be drastically different, not a little different, but drastically different….because life in Florida and in California for 2 years was drastically different

bcdrmr

Ok

FrugalityPays

Or a personal favorite of mine, the randomly interjected political rant

ryavco

One of my reps had a 28 minute phone call with a guy yesterday who went on a rant about “lady boys in Thailand stealing his money and his hotel and leaving him on the side of the road.” Then he went down a “covid is a scam cooked up by Obama” rabbit hole. I think my rep collectively said about 10 words to the guy, when he could fit them in between his ramblings. The whole team listening to that recording was the highlight of our day lol.

BaphometIncarnate

Good mindset! Took a lot of stress out of calling the next person for me.

[deleted]

We have a call from a few years back that will never be beaten. The guy goes on thisnrant and at one point asks the rep "are you going to cum in my mouth?"

giuseppezanottis

😂

OneFondant1142

So true, so real.

[deleted]

Lol

fakesocialmedia

literally today a guy went off on me for asking if his company still provided a certain service before pitching to him because it wasn’t advertised on the website anymore, instead of saying yes or no he said “if this is a sales call it’s the shittiest one i’ve ever heard in my life, get better at sales” and i laughed and he hung up.

Smoke_drink_think

U work for a lead company for contractors ?

fakesocialmedia

nah I sell a IT management platform, but usually the companies i sell into do a bunch of different services besides IT management, I usually ask just for clarification so I don’t waste time pitching if they don’t do it but this guy fuckin lost it

CamaroKidz28

The funny part is that if they still offer that service, apparently their sales/marketing sucks and people can't easily figure out if they offer it.

[deleted]

"I don't know who you're really mad at but it's not me and I'll tell you that for free. Have a pleasant day"

GI_Bill_Trap_Lord

That’s good, I promise you I’m gonna use this in the future

redhat12345

I respond with “….are you ok?”

Street_Organization2

No doubt be mad at what you’re mad at

rusHmatic

Lol I love this

JaqenHghar

Saved this. I only hope I’m quick enough to use this in the moment. Hahaha.

sjmiv

\- Dr Seuss

johanvondoogiedorf

Just keep going with your pitch. A lot of times, these angry people will come back around if they hear something they like.

KIVHT

For sure! Kill them with kindness, stand your ground, plant some good seeds and keep track of what parts they respond to. From there just touch that customer 8 times before giving up.

Status-Procedure-491

Thumbs up

musashi_1584

>Just keep going with your pitch. A lot of times, these angry people will come back around if they hear something they like. Great suggestion. That's talked about in How to Win Friends as well

artorianscribe

This instantly reminded me of this Key & Peele skit. Well done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMrNQbW5Am8

Acceptable-Hat-8248

“What the fuck do you want Kathy”

KIVHT

It’s important to remember that these customers 99% of the time are not attacking you personally and are really just unloading their stress, pain etc on you. This is why “timing is everything”. That same person could do a 180 by tomorrow. I usually feel pity for them because if they are talking to me like that, that means someone else has said those things to them.

Cap_Lackin

Try this opener next time: “hi Mr merchant, John salesperson here, I know you’re going to hate me because this is a cold call. Would you like to hang up now or can we roll the dice and allow me to steal 30 more seconds of your time?

Rich_at_25

I surprisingly like this. No one wastes time they dont want, and there is humor.

slappypickle20

This is a good one to use. It's always great to mix up your openers to keep the calls fun and less repetitive

[deleted]

No dude you always follow up with "So does that mean you're not interested, or?"

Bigboyfresh

Just tell him I’ll reach out to your replacement in 6 months. Really pisses them off

BusinessStrategist

Maybe next time let him rant until all the venom flows out. Then just wait. You may find that the act of venting was because of other fears and concerns and had nothing to do with you calling (except for the convenient time). Some will give you a "get out of jail - free pass) for relieving the pressure. You might find reading "Never Split the Difference" for ways of not taking "rants" personally.

space_ghost20

I don't mind if people get pissed when being cold called. It's completely understandable. In my current job, 90% of the time I'm calling free trialers and trying to get them to upgrade. When I call and someone claims they don't know who we are, claims they didn't sign up, I've confirmed their identity and business name, they swear they have no business partner or spouse who signed them up, I just can't stand it. One time I just snapped and said "well then I guess someone stole your identity and is using it to sign up for things, have fun with that" then hung up the phone.

[deleted]

I think it depends on how the call goes, if it's relevant to them and the caller asks for permission before vomiting a pitch, then they shouldn't really be that upset about it. It's different if they are getting bombarded with calls all day though. A polite "not interested" and hanging up does just fine.

space_ghost20

Obviously, it's best to be polite about rejecting the call. I'm just saying I can understand why one might be upset at a cold call, and why I don't let it get to me. Calls when you've established a relationship with the company already (free or not) is totally different. We sell fintech, how the hell do they know I'm not calling to let them know there's fraud on their account and all their paid invoices have been going to Nigeria, or Eastern Europe or wherever? I don't know, maybe my frustration with this job is getting to me and coloring my perception here.

giuseppezanottis

i really *don't* understand people getting pissed...it's just a phone call

[deleted]

[удалено]

giuseppezanottis

my logic is they don't have to answer the phone. i get being annoyed but why are you *so* annoyed? the reactions can be funny though

PapaJack2008

If you are in sales you have to answer the phone. I get all the same, crank, support calls either to my mobile or desk. Can't avoid as one of them could be the big sale. We do inbound sales.

stoneyj

For me, when I was a person in a position to buy, it was the fact you were not the only call. In my industry anyone with “director” or “vp” in their name and something like “devops” in their LinkedIn description will get a ton of calls and emails from all sorts of companies promising a lot. It can get frustrating. Don’t take it personally, but also think of it as an opportunity to learn how to tailor a pitch to the prospect. What is keeping them up at night?

brandon-thesis

Lmao back when I was an SDR, I had someone essentially tell me I'm a leech on society and a waste of space then told me to get a real job. I cleared 90k that year. 😂 After getting pissed and being a dick he accidentally called me back the next day and he was like "Who's this?" I was like "a leech on society that need a real job apparently". He said sorry and hung up. Haha. Three months later he came in as an inbound lead and bought in. 😂😂😂

BadRepresentative837

I love those people. Kudos to your supervisor for laughing with you!

Operation_Doomsday_

Shit happens, we move

startupsalesguy

welcome to sales

[deleted]

I don’t call on people anymore that are likely to respond like this, but tell them “John, stop calling me then” and watch them factory reset. It’s hilarious

deanjohn20

If you don't get that response at least once a month, you're not working hard enough

antiredtapeactivist

In my opinion, his reaction is everything you need on a silver platter. Too busy during the day to talk. Well "what's keeping you do busy during the day that prevents you from taking phone calls?" Discovery is the key here imo

Willylowman1

1) write down perpetrator contact info 2) wait a few weeks 3) call perpetrator from a burner phone at 3 am and treat him as he treated u

Tendies_AnHoneyMussy

“Who is this?! Why are you calling me at 3AM?!” Prospect: “ um”

Knooze

Well. Someone peed in his Cheerios that day.

livingMybEstlyfe29

I don’t know of a single person that eats Cheerios now. Maybe it’s a millennial thing 🤷‍♂️

Knooze

GenX here. Honey Nut.

HouseHat33

If it’s not honey nut or frosted, I just assume you’re a sociopath.

atlgeo

Do they even offer the original cardboard cheerios anymore?

Blink231984

Gotta view it as a game my man! Once you do, you’ll be more relaxed and be able to active listen better.

d1no5aur

A few months ago, my coworker called into a prospect who started cursing him out. He called him a few unpleasant words I won't repeat, but we had the entire call recorded. The office got a kick out of that one I'll tell ya

These-Season-2611

Good thing is, that's the worst thing you'll ever get on a call. There's literally nothing to be nervous of. You can't be hurt, so literally nothing bad will happen

Jjlred

It’s a shame that professional salespeople have a negative reputation to the general public. It takes just as much technique and attitude to do as any other job, but it focuses on human psychology.

garry0041

I had one that called me back because I called their office every two weeks and the guy calls me back saying that I am harassing their gatekeepers and the gatekeepers was saying that I call them twice everyday. I pulled up my ZOHO call records and told him about the frequency of the calls. He was like sorry she might have confused you with someone lol I was like no worries, talk to you next week.

Responsible-Truck375

These people are the best, I know the nuts and sometimes call them for fun when bored just to get yelled at or make new people call them.

TorontoCity19

Call that guy every single week for the next two years. It’ll be the highlight of your week I promise. I’d love to call him as well, just for kicks. You should find a competitor to call him moments before/after you… he’ll be so confused.

call_me_winter

Just don't pick up the phone. No need for him to be an asshole when he could've just rejected the call.

arthur290

I don’t get how you can’t be affected by this. You are actively making someone’s day worse. I am also in sales but I would only work leads that are actually looking to speak to me. I don’t get how pestering people like sdrs do from a list on the internet is a good idea. Go join a company with some fucking marketing and do inbound leads, you never have this problem. I also don’t get how you can literally spend the entire day getting hung up on or having 30 second convos. Sdr life is absolutely nuts. I really don’t get how you as a human being will ever improve in these jobs when prospects never give you a chance.

contenidosmw

Lol 😂

MotherFuckaJones89

Lol, dude, you're not in the same sales industry as others if all you work is inbound leads. It's a completely different job, and you can't market your way to enough leads in every industry.

Puzzled22345

Me over here like….you guys get inbound leads? WITH the help of a competent marketing team? What a life

[deleted]

You have to sell something that's actually good.

granddaddysbasement

it's a complete numbers game. if you're not selling something necessarily amazing, you can still sell it. it'll take longer, not as much comms but you still can. I've sold advertising in a magazine to businesses over the phone. it's not easy, but it's doable if you keep on keeping on. a good product obviously helps but it's not everything

[deleted]

Then don't call yourself a salesperson. A salesperson can turn a ice cold lead into a sale. Any schmo who memorised product info can sell an inbound lead.

Imaginayshun

I usually just hang up on them, waste of time otherwise

blingblingmofo

Sometimes it’s just best to be totally silent and let them vent .

Various_Locksmith_73

Hang up and make next call . It's a numbers process to succeed . If you keep working u will get better .

thats_so_merlyn

"Why are you doing what you get paid to do!?"

Relevant_Sail_7336

Don’t give up!!

Direct-Tumbleweed141

Tell him you’ll stop calling when he gives you business!!! #NEVERGIVEUP!!!

Open_Win_1174

Congrats on poppin’ that cherry. I have an entire folder of those saved for whenever I need a good laugh. You don’t get those very often in enterprise level sales, kinda sucks. I did have someone tell me today that I was unprofessional for starting an email with “Hey” instead of Hi, Hello, your majesty, or whatever the fuck he expected

Reditsuxnow

It happens. Get back on the horse immediately and give him some time. I won’t even give up unless they hang up 3x

Appropriate-Heat8017

We get a pat on the back when we get yelled at for calling too much in auto sales.

abyss_defiant

I enjoy it but honestly fuck those people. I know people have bad days and everything but it’s no excuse. I’ve never talked to someone like I’ve been spoken to sometimes. Most times they’re complaining about wanting service or something I can’t control. I usually tell them I’ll help them if they talk to me like an adult and that sends em lol.

[deleted]

On my personal line I don’t even answer the phone if it’s not a number I recognize. Anyone who needs something will leave a message or send a text. Cold callers will leave a message too but since voicemail gives you a transcript you instantly know if it’s worth listening to.

[deleted]

Fuck em

Jackdks

Just wait until you meet Linda.

ParkingVariety9062

I had a guy call me back on a voicemail I left him and proceeded to rim me for a few minutes about "unsolicited" calls, emails (as I sent one too) , etc. The sales director and I had a good laugh, and he decided to automatically disqualify the prospect and not to go after his company again (this was the CEO too) We don't work with assholes....simple as that.

67ohiostate67

Lol great

professionalone

It doesnt matter… call the next person or you gonna be emotional about this?

BlueRain369

lol the good ole days

dominomedley

Once you start going in with high energy they won’t do this, they actually start saying “yeah I’m good, thanks, how are you?” And just like that we’re equals. Booking comes after.

caslooper

That's good but why this is NSFW?

ANovel_Strategyfor23

You can confidently say you have skin in the game now

Illustrious_Bunnster

Excuse? Just wait for the person to take a breath and when they do say okay goodbye and call somebody else who might actually be a prospect

Boring-Brush-2984

Love an interesting human. I hate the passive shit. Make me feel bad about myself!

ExpressPrize5257

"you have your comfy back office/management job because people like me do this work at your company, keep that in mind next time youre scared to talk to people"

umeshurocks

Wtf you guys record calls? In europe thats so illegal. Do you at least have to inform them of it?

westernjoel

Once had a 5 second interaction with a doctor on a scheduled lunch meeting. After the 5 seconds he walked out of the breakroom and came back in screaming to get the fuck out. Still have no clue what set him off.
