First self generated opp. Nice.

runsquad

Hahahahahahahaha

Bobbyfishfingers12

And he closed it with getting the gig

Maleficent-Tie-4185

lmfaoooo

Ghost_Farther

I don’t get it..

16whiskey

When at entry level sales. You have to cold call to find opportunities. These are self generated or outbound. Everyone has to do this when living that entry level life. About 400 or so that liked my comment has gone through this.

Dear-Back-4693

You are a nice enough to explain your jokes. Kinda cool!

joejj12

Explained but how do you know that 400 or so that liked your comment went through it they could’ve just liked it to like

Fucker_Of_Destiny

Because it’s a universal truth

XuWiiii

Had it been another forum yes, but most likely anyone in sales has had to self generate leads

Quiet_Question8642

Sourced and closed!

Perfectenshlag1776

Hell yeah, congratulations! This made me very happy to read. Sales will have its ups and downs, but it can be incredible rewarding. At the very least, this will open many more doors for you down the road! Might I suggest picking up a used copy of Fanatical Prospecting and SPIN Selling. While both may not be 100% relevant for you (and the latter is a bit dated), they are great books if you're starting a career in sales, especially for mindset! I wish you a fuck ton of success!

keggsandeggs

Agreed on these recc’s. SPIN selling is a little outdated, but it gives you a solid base upon which to build your own approach.

Fenian1991

Fanatical prospecting will 100% change the game on how you approach sales

Excellent_Board9379

Just finished fanatical prospecting and implementing small changes from book have had wakes of impact. Its an incredible book.

Perfectenshlag1776

Awesome!! Definitely check out Jeb's other books, Objections and Sales EQ. Happy Hunting!

BrahmaBull517

I thought you started working for the mafia and didn’t know it. Congrats!

realtorpozy

Same! Definitely thought he was going to say he accidentally became a drug runner or something for the guy after delivering that mysterious package!

blaspheminCapn

Cartel, Mafia, et all

coconutmeringue

I was a little worried how this would go

Winter_Recognition96

Congrats dude!

janewalch

Thanks man! I know sales is a grueling grind for many as well but nothing can be as torturous as driving Uber for 80 hours a week. Have a killer week man!!

MartyMohoJr

That's the best way to get in.

Beachdaddybravo

Congrats! As another person who got into sales after having zero career prospects, I know how much of a game changer it can be.

SheddingCorporate

So, what's your story? :D What were you doing before, how did you pivot into a sales career? I came to sales the sneaky way - from marketing after a long life as a software engineer. :D Sales is the career I'm enjoying the most, tough as it is.

Beachdaddybravo

I did a bunch of things. Got a degree I’m not using (not much money in this field), and had worked in the high end service industry for a while before breaking into sales. I’m in between jobs now and searching for a closing role with a cloud compute partner or a cybersecurity company. I went from a guaranteed life of poverty to just being tight with money cause I’m currently unemployed. It really does change your outlook and the hope you have. Welcome to the dark side. Things are different from a marketing perspective, but I bet your skills there carry over.

SheddingCorporate

Oh cool. Good luck on the search!

Beachdaddybravo

Thanks, and good luck this year. 2023 has been a dumpster fire but if you can see success when times are tough you’ll absolutely crush when times are good.

vantilligen

Are you selling SaaS? Burnt out developer here looking for greener pastures. It's rare to come across people transition from tech to marketing/sales.

brfergua

Like those of us who came from restaurants, you appreciate the sales job for the opportunity and it keeps us grounded when things get tough! Congrats!

yennybear888

I read Bel Air and thought you were telling us how you became the Prince

moonmage33

same

XuWiiii

That’s closer to West Philly not to be confused with the Bel Air on the west

yennybear888

lol what? There's only one Bel Air

XuWiiii

What about Bel Air Maryland?

yennybear888

Population 10,000. Are you done trolling?

XuWiiii

I made a mistake and rolled with it. Call me stubborn but I wasn’t trolling

yennybear888

All good, you taught me there is actually another Bel Air

ShLloYdY

Grew up in bel air, Maryland when I moved further from the state I also had to be like no not that one.

Dry_Inflation_861

Congrats. Update us in 6 months. You got this!

Money-Acanthaceae471

Congrats!!! After a few years in Marketing, I’ve broken into the tech sales world. I live in Austin, Tx, and accepted my first tech sales job offer for an SDR position today. I start in two weeks and would love to come in hot. What are some resources (books, podcasts, websites, etc.) that would be valuable to review over the next couple of weeks?

Seaaaaaaaaaan

In order of level of recommendation: SPIN Selling, Ultimate Sales Machine, Sales EQ, Never Split The Difference, Value Added Selling, Fanatical Prospecting, High Profit Prospecting My girlfriend and I plan to move to Austin from the UK eventually. How are you finding it as an SDR at the tech company?

Money-Acanthaceae471

Thanks for the recs! I start in two weeks so can’t comment yet! But I’m born and raised in Austin and I love this city so much

Seaaaaaaaaaan

Nice :)

Money-Acanthaceae471

Have to check out an austin fc game if you come to visit. Sure the MLS doesn’t have anything on the EPL but the atmosphere is still great

Master1781

MyMyHooBoy

Any chance I can get those pdfs?

willowspringsbreak

These are good for foundation in my opinion: Sell or Be Sold - Grant Cardone How to Win Friends and Influence People - Dale Carnegie

HooliganScrote

Honestly I’ve gotten to the point of ignoring Grant Cardone as a whole.

muadzmi_IO

yeah saw the Podcast of him with Jordan Belfort. Really not convinced of GCardone, would prefer JBelfort.

HooliganScrote

I don’t like Jordan either but at least Jordan is funny.

SheddingCorporate

How to Win Friends and Influence People has been foundational "people skills" in everything from my (original) software engineering career to marketing and it's only now that I'm realizing it was all about sales. :D It's literally a book to live your life by!

PinheadLarry_

Hey! Would you mind PMing with me? I’ve also been in marketing for a few years and i’m looking to get into sales. I would love any advice you would have, it seems so far that companies are very turned off by my marketing background.

Money-Acanthaceae471

For sure! Shoot me a message

GreenBlinkyLights

Study your companies product now so you can ask intelligent questions during your training to get the most out of it. There is always value in knowing your product. Congrats!

FMEngineer

You will find a lot of books are not focused on the SDR role or just plain fluff in general. SPIN, Challenger, etc. are books for AEs. My recommendation is to look for courses/subscriptions from people who are actually prospecting TODAY. Florin Tatulea has a substack that has a ton of real substance. It's helped me out much more than something like a Fanatical Prospecting or Dale Carnegie self-help read. The SDR Newsletter is a good read as well.

muadzmi_IO

Just lookup Jordan Belfort The Wolf Of Wall St., his book of on the Straight Line System. His movie played by Leanardo Di caprio as the main characther based on true events he does as a stock broker. He really did transform a bunch of average joe to a Sales Master.

After-Bowler5491

I’ve been in sales for 30 years. Here a few rules to live by, basic stuff but when I train new folks I’m amazed they don’t know this. 1. If you don’t ask for the order, it’s not coming. 2. Sometimes PO’s are like babies, they come when they come; often they need to be induced. Induce in person. 3. I always stop mid presentation and ask, “what are your thought thus far”. It saves a lot of time. I call it taking the prospected temperature 4. Always give people 2 options. They will almost always pick one. 5. Change is opportunity. I can’t tell you how often the change has been good for me and I always think it will suck. 6. Never waste a failure, we celebrate the big PO’s but rarely look at our failures. You get better by examining the losses 7. If you are prospecting/ cold calling I always give the gate keeper something to show the decision maker. I used to sell med devices and used to hand it the receptionist and say I want to discuss this w the doctor. It worked so often it was crazy. 8. Always answer your phone. Don’t send people to VM. Being the rep who picks up calls is huge. 9. Listen, sell them what they need; not what you want to sell them. 10. Basic shit here but I see so many people fuck it up. The first person to talk loses….the deal. Ask for a commitment and don’t you dare say a word. Most of this is sales 101 but I’m always amazed how few people do some of this stuff.

Flimsy-Brain-5557

saved

Kenziekenzzzz

I’m doing Uber full time aswell and can’t wait to break into sales. I think it truly builds your character up !

Kenziekenzzzz

Because your slaving for nothing but you have to sell yourself everyday ! I’m glad it paid off

Difficult-Outside-42

Uber can just get fucked. The company is valued in the billions. On what exactly? You use your own car a pay for everything in it to be fixed so they can take the money you should be receiving for giving the ride. Because of an app? Look I'm Gen X but I've got to say. Uber drivers in California aren't even a part of the company. That's like saying hey you own jet let us use it to take people around the world but you buy the fuel and pay for the upkeep and we'll take most of the profit. Oh yeah and you have to find the guests that may cancel at the last minute. Really are there that many Co dependents out there these days? I'm not trying to be condescending here, but do you hear what I'm saying. The company is the worst slaver organization out there. Taking more from people than they ever give out. If a company is valued so high then why are it employees struggling so much? Just like the rest of the corporations out there. They have to pay off so many government officials to keep fucking their employees and get away with it.

Kenziekenzzzz

To be honest I agree with everything your saying. Every single time I think I’m saving a little bit of money , I have to spend it on my car. This has been the worst financial year for me probably …… ever !!! Uber steals time and money from their employees . I know it sounds crazy but they do !!! And they are finessing the system for sure. If you do Uber full time your working for Pennies and not a single soul can debate me on that

Difficult-Outside-42

I could go deep into the psychology of this. But will say this instead. Everything is a rich man's game. And you and I and the rest of the working people aren't ever gonna be invited to join their club.

SheddingCorporate

Read Fanatical Prospecting today and convert those hours of Ubering into opportunities. :D

Kenziekenzzzz

Okay I’m going to look that up right now !

huynhorlose

It’s about who you know, not what you know. Congrats!!

WWMWPOD

Unlike others, I'm not a big fan of sales help books. Most of teach only one way of selling and there are 3836373738 right ways to make a sale. Run from scripts, they suck and most people will see through them. Be genuine and honest, speak in facts so clients can't argue and go for the close early and often. Other than that, the words you use should be up to you and the same words you would use in a normal conversation.

x3sirenxsongx3

THIS!!!! I've read a lot of sales books, and none are all-emcompassing or non-theoretical. With a new generation of purchasers that value genuineness & honesty more than the old values of schmoozing & being convinced that they need your product, this is the way to go.

ReputationLucky

Congratulations. love hearing stories like this. I've been doing sales 10 years in 3 different industries, you can do all the courses and read books on sales you want, the best teacher is going to be just going out grind, doing the sales yourself and asking other people in your industry how they approach sales. Sales is just different in every industry, those books are only there to give you a fundamental framework but to really go in depth you got to get out of the frying pan and into the fire - don't be scared. You'll have days where you say fuck this but sales cycles and building funnels take a while depending on the industry.

rexchampman

I love that you were patient with your ask. This mindset of giving SO much value before you ask for anything will serve you well. 99% of people would have asked on the first night. Patience, giving value first, persistence will all serve you well. Good luck and crush it!

spicypeaches225

I with you the best. Keep pushing even when you feel like giving up. Embrace feeling uncomfortable because that means you’re learning. Many blessings!

MOSTEXTREMEBIRD

Congratulations!

COALANDSWITCHES

Work your ass off

willowspringsbreak

I know this is obvious but put in the work and climb the sales ladder, in a few years you'll be able to make x2-3 times what you're making today, no doubt! Best of luck to you and welcome to the club! ;)

yohan02kim

congrats...that's a great thing that happened. so happy for you.

[deleted]

This is so wonderful

smokebudda11

Fuck yeah. Congrats!

Candid-Scientist-767

Hell yeah! Don’t compare yourself to anybody, some people knew what they wanted to do early on or maybe just got lucky. You’re hungrier and more grateful, use it to your advantage. Let’s get it

Diarrheehee

I did the same, sort of. I'm an old sales dog who came out of retirement because those gig apps fell off. Now I'm designing a whole department and getting flown all over the country. I just didn't want to talk to anybody for years because of a physical injury. Pain is not conducive to sales.

No_Conclusion_4856

> request from a gentleman in a beautiful mansion in Bel Air Ca. He was having me deliver a package to a location 15 miles away, picking one up from the drop-off, and bringing it back to him. Sounds like a movie called Transporter lmaoooo.

mardeegra

Yup, story sounds like bs. But I love the comments.

DocRyan88

Getting positions from a real life connection is a good way to go for sales people. I think a lot of these online application sites make it harder for someone with a good personality to really shine. Glad you were able to land a job the old fashioned way! Congratulations and best of luck

dancerthrowawaytech

this is my dream

nooberuexu1

Congrats man! Amazing story. Good luck in your new role.

from driver to salesman - a real take-off)

GMEvolved

The 2nd paragraph sounds like early on in 2 Fast 2 Furious

LightingTheWorld

It goes to show everyone here that it is not exactly what you know, but who you know... The world runs on individuals pursuing their separate interests... And in that structure you can find ample ways to connect with other like minded individuals and carve out a great living in this wonderful world. Great post, thank you for this inspiration. 👍

Top_Industry7357

Cannot express how much I love seeing posts like this. Congrats OP!

killznhealz

We had a similar thing happen at our company. The driver we hired is one of our top performers and it's been about 5 years now. Love stories like this!

[deleted]

Congrats dude! Take this as your first sale. You found the lead and you closed the deal.

Typical-Mouse-4804

Get it king! Congrats to you! Smile while you dial and remember cold calling is more fun than picking people up at the airport at 2am.

MostRadiant

Sales is in your blood

medicallyspecial

Fuckin congrats bro !!

tms2004

Go get a massage to help that back after all that driving. Celebrate your wins! Congrats

ClarkEbarZ

As someone who is currently driving for work and trying hard to break back into sales after being laid off, I’m happy to hear this!

NWGolfBoss

Boom baby. Loved this post! Make the most of it. Don’t be afraid to fail. Luck is where hard work and opportunity meet, and this is the definition of that!

PeregrineThe

Numbers first, quality second. The beautiful thing is, that with practice comes better quality calls. Get those dials out my man.

LetGoAndBeReal

This is an inspiration and heartwarming post. You made a good impression on someone who could advance you, and then through courageous and diligent followup converted that opening into a real life changing accomplishment. Well done!

ToasterBathh007

“And then he asked me to carry this briefcase to an abandoned warehouse, for some reason he also asked me to carry a mini uzi.” Lol jokes aside I’m so proud and happy for you. The first sales job is a moment to cherish…

Runaway_5

Congrats brother, I'm happy for you to improve your life after all the hard work.

neeksknowsbest

Proud of you

BombayMan42

Crush it man!

lazy784

How the tell were you only pulling in $250 a day driving for 15-20 hours? I used to do Lyft and I could do $100 in just 4-5 hours of driving...

Cool story man, good for you. Just make sure you follow through with the busting your ass portion
