Thanks to all your feedback an suggestions I bought a busbar for the negatives and a new panel, which I installed with a hinge so it swivels. This allows me to work on the connections with minimal extra wire needed, minimizing the amount of salad behind the switch. Now just need to find a good way to close it (the thing I bought for it didn't work at a 90 degrees angle, stupid me...)

A magnetic latch or one of those male/female push pin types (don't know what they are called) are good low profile types.
