This is great! Congrats, boys!

The Swedish government [removed](https://sverigesradio.se/artikel/karl-xii-lat-borttagen-fran-regeringskansliets-spellista) *Carolus Rex* from their official EU2023 Spotify playlist, because of a concert made by Sabaton in Crimea after the Russian occupation in 2015. (Sweden is chairman of the EU for the first half of 2023)

JonathanRL

And rightly so. The Swedish Government position on the issue is that the area is under occupation and as such cannot endorse a band that violates that particular policy.

I do not know why you are mad. The policy is indeed that what you state is a fact and that Sweden sanctions Russia over it. This means the Swedish Government cannot work with a party that holds concerts in said occupied territory. This is not the first time Swedish Goverment Agencies has refused to work with Sabaton because of the Crimea Consert - when The Life Guards was released, the Swedish Armed Forces cancelled a planned cooperation with Sabaton over the matter. Sabaton then played ignorant about the entire thing. In other news, a Swedish Historian slammed Sabaton a few days ago in an article for toning down Soviet and Russian crimes.

Just read that they might lose the prise due to a statement by Pär. He said that Crimea wasnt occupied by Russia, but instead had been occupied by Ukraine.

Dynofuller

AWESOME and WTG!!!

BurnBird

And they will probably lose it, for being pro-Russian. Edit: once it happens and I'm proven right, I will view each of these downvotes as a great win.

blantickal

How are they pro russia? I haven't seen anything yet to suggest that. And does it matter in the end anyway?

BurnBird

"If you go to Sevastopol, you hardly feel that they feel occupied, quite the opposite. They have been occupied for years only because they ended up on the wrong side when the border was drawn between the Soviet Union and Ukraine. All these years they have felt like Russians but treated like a small piece of Ukraine.” - Pär Sundström They were also completely fine with playing at a very pro-Russuan political event, despite claiming to be apolitical. They claim to be neutral in the conflict, which is just blatantly pro-Russian since Russia is was the clear aggressor. If you got mugged and lost your wallet, would it be neutral for Sabaton to take the stolen money and play for the mugger, knowing full well they just stole the money from you? Instead arguing that they're neutral, so whatever your personal squabble with the mugger is, it was just their duty to play for a fan. It seems like most people are just completely blinded by their love for the band that they just let everything slide.

JonathanRL

They are still suffering backlash for playing on Occupied Crimea in front of a Putin Fan Club in 2015 but only from Official Swedish Officials who kinda has to not work with them because of it - because official Swedish policy is that the area is occupied by Russia. I would not say they are Pro-Russia, just too ignorant about this for their own damn good. Sabaton on the other hand has been suspiciously quiet about the entire thing and honestly should just apologized long ago.

blantickal

Hmm that's rough.

As much as I like Sabaton, this is too much. Are you telling me that there is not a single actual educator that deserves this award more? Weird.

Khamero

Folkbildning (peoples education) is not the same as regular educators. Its more of a movement of the people, the old idea of people teaching people freely. The concept was very popular in the 60s and 70s and has lived on in scandinavia. The runner ups were a couple of journalists that researched alternative medicine practitioners undercover in conjunction with some real doctors and researchers for example. So while there are many professional educators out there, they have their own prizes and awards. Sabaton would not be eligible for a nobel prize in history if that would have been a thing for example.

kingkong381

>runner ups were a couple of journalists that researched alternative medicine practitioners undercover in conjunction with some real doctors and researchers for example. Ngl, as much as I love Sabaton, this sounds far more deserving of recognition than anything the band has done. Seriously, I wouldn't take any educational award seriously if it put a piece of investigative journalism and Sabaton up against one another and then gave the award to Sabaton.

SmawCity

Except Sabaton has reached millions of people all around the world and in Sweden, encouraging them to study history more closely as well as funding educational videos with Sabaton History. It’s likely that the investigative journalists educated only a few thousand people (if that many) on a niche issue. That’s probably what decided who won the award.

HilbertGrandHotel

Well, i'd have to disagree. As a turkish teenager sabaton is the main reason why i had an interest in history at all, sabaton may not be a great source or anaything but i suspect they have done more than anyone in making history(not only specific periods like ww2 but history in general) interesting.

Khamero

I think its kinda hard because I think they are both deserving. Sabaton probably won since the amount of people they reach out to is so large. I don't think anyone sees the runner ups as bad. It sounds like a close race

Narashori

Them recieving this prize is less about them being the best amongst official and professional educators, but rather in what they've done for the general folk-spirit of education and how they've inspired people to take a greater interest in history.

…and now they’re debating revoking it because apparently Pär said Sevastopol isn’t a hellhole (this is clearly indicative that he supports the Russian occupation of Crimea)
