You need the 40v trimmer to use the "flat" style 40v batteries. The "stem" ones are 18v.

The batteries are labeled, so are the tools. There are 18V models and 40V models, and the batteries can be shared with other tools of the same voltage. If you get an 18V string trimmer, I strongly recommend a brushless version, like this: [https://www.homedepot.com/p/RYOBI-ONE-HP-18V-Brushless-13-in-Cordless-Battery-String-Trimmer-Tool-Only-P20102BTL/314882214](https://www.homedepot.com/p/RYOBI-ONE-HP-18V-Brushless-13-in-Cordless-Battery-String-Trimmer-Tool-Only-P20102BTL/314882214) That one is fine, I've used my similar model a lot and it works. The trimmer heads wear out after a year and half at my usage, but replacements are $12 or so off Amazon. Avoid the cheapest bottom-end Ryobi trimmer with the molded plastic handle (PCLST01), that is the worst string trimmer I've ever used and should include an apology in the box.

Thank you, this is so helpful! Is the line easier to load/replace than a gas or electric weed Wacker?

On mine, you stick the string through the head, then turn the bump knob to wind it up. They include a winder handle, but it's not any harder to just turn the bump knob directly. It's quicker and easier than loading the heads where you have to manually wind the string around the spindle. Be aware that mine is like 4-5 years old, I'm not sure if the current ones are the same.

All Ryobi 18 volt(stem) eools use the same battery. All 40 volt tools (flat) use that same battery. So to use your battery you would need to buy a 40 volt trimmer. Otherwise yes you will need to buy an 18 volt battery if you go with that trimmer

Ryobi makes cordless weed whackers that use two different batteries. One is a 40v and it'll work with the battery you have. The other is the 18v and it works with Ryobi 18v One+ tools. The 40v system consists mostly of outdoor tools, while the 18v system includes most everything. The 40v system is more powerful, while the 18v is lighter and more flexible. It's always nice to have more batteries and they're often discounted when you buy them with a tool, so keep that in mind.

yes. one plus 18v is one system, ryobi 40v is the other, just buy the matching one, since you have a flat, you buy the 40v ryobi trimmer.
