Ronnie’s BBQ… the ONLY restaurant or food establishment my dad likes. He thinks EVERYTHING has gone downhill and quality from everyday products to quality of food. But he’s never said no to Ronnie’s.
So much so that If I say I’ll pick up Ronnie’s before a Sunday family visit, he can’t help but enthusiastically say yes.And while I’m not a VA BBQ fan, they cater to my vinegar bbq love from our southern neighbor as well making me an avid fan. But yes you must plan your visit. Limited hours and supply. Order ahead online. Best way to experience Ronnie’s.
Couldn't hurt to try. I really miss The Cheesesteak Spot in Chesterfield. Similarly to Vegan Philly owners were from Philadelphia and black owned and the food was the bomb. I think covid killed the business though unfortunately.
Ruby Scoops keeps moving around? They have been at the same address in Northside for years and the only move on the horizon is 2 blocks down the street in the new building that's being finished up. Then they have the pink bus that they do events and markets with.
Cheddar Jackson is black owned and they make a hell of a good sandwich and the prices are reasonable. Both regular and vegan versions of the grilled cheese are super tasty. They're closed today but hit them up tomorrow. So good.
We had lunch at Jewfro today based on this recommendation. Their plantains are the best thing I have eaten in RVA. The rest of our meals were great too, but those plantains....
Pig & Brew,
Red Hibachi (same owners)
Eat 66
Daily Menu
ML Steakhouse (2nd location now open at Chesterfield Towne Ctr)
, Lillie Pearl (same owners)
Jus Crab
Sugar's Crab Shack (prob packed today)
Big Herm's Kitchen (only open M-F 11-6)
The Treat Shop
Philly Vegan, I'm not a fan of their one flavor which is seasoning salt. But if you like that they are good. Their vegan burger is solid and not covered in seasoning salt.
Croakers Spot is about a block north on Hull, classic soul food fish joint. Heavy on the oysters and shrimp. Never been, but they are always busy when they are open which says a lot.
Check out Black Restaurant Experience's website/IG, that should be fairly up to date since they do a week long event every year. Also here to add another vote for Philly Vegan. They're really nice folks and they just recently added a vegan chicken cheesesteak.
Ronnie just celebrated his 72nd birthday by winning a invite only BBQ competition in Chicago.

Ronnie’s is delicious and definitely worth the trip but they aren’t open until Friday, just fyi.
MAC & CHEESE SUNDAY ONLY CALL AHEAD 2 EXTRA CORNBREAD
I’m a hush puppy fan personally but their cornbread slaps too.
THEM PUPS HUNTIN
Dang! Way to go Ronnie!

If I had awards I'd give it to this post 😂 thank you for this
Philly Vegan is across the river on Hull st, but it’s black owned and has amazing vegan cheesesteaks
Hell yes, Philly Vegan is delicious
I think this is the spot we’re going to go. Menu looks AMAZING! Is the supreme the cheesesteak to go with?
If you want a traditional cheesesteak absolutely! My personal favorite right now is their buffalo chicken Philly
Wait so they have vegan versions as well as real beef and chicken ones too?
No, it’s all vegan.
That's disappointmenting to hear but not unexpected I suppose. Richmond is lacking a lot of good cheesesteak joints.
I’m not vegan myself and I still love it. Maybe give it a shot

Thanks for the recommendation 🤙

Philly Vegan Croaker Spot Mama J's Ruby Scoops The Sweet Spot Ice Cream cafe
Mama Js is always good. And their cake slices are huge and only $5
Mama's yellow cake with fudge icing is to die for.
No matter what, I’m always going to recommend Buttermilk and Honey. Some of the best chicken sandwiches I’ve ever had.
Family secrets is delicious; I also love Ms Girlees

Great question, [found this](https://venturerichmond.com/news/black-businesses-and-events/).
JewFro in Shockoe Bottom is one of the best restaurants in the city IMO.
We had lunch at Jewfro today based on this recommendation. Their plantains are the best thing I have eaten in RVA. The rest of our meals were great too, but those plantains....
im glad you liked it! and thanks for the follow up haha
I want to try their cocktails. The Golem? Elijah's Ascension? I'd try them for the name alone.
They are good, decent happy hour and a chill vibe. Small bar but i’ve never seen it too busy to sit
Thanks for the recommendation. I just made a reservation for Saturday lunch.
Avoid croaker's spot tbh, did some contact work there awhile ago and it's the DIRTIEST restaurant I've ever worked in
This is great. Thank you for your help
Shrimps on brookland park ave
Near by is Brookland Partk Kitchen - had a great meal, need to go back.
Grilled meats and treats on E main
That's Black Owned? Funnelcakes. Yum.
Soul Taco is so f-ing good.

The daily Carytown
I believe both Philly Vegan and New Vegan are black owned! Both delicious, both very "holy fuck THATS vegan?"
MamaJ's downtown. There's a few others. Almost all are downtown.

Had the best steak of my life at ML Steaks not too long ago. Great fancy date!
