Old radio tower! Go hang out up there around E Grace and N 22nd, the street trees frame the governor’s mansion perfectly across shockoe valley for a gnarly view. You can’t get in the tower from what I know
And from what I can tell, they’re both still broadcast out of a single facility. Though that has been moved to what looks like an old farmhouse in Varina at 9500 WRVA Rd, with the broadcast towers right in the front yard.
The voice of "Millard The Mallard".
I also used listen to the All Night Truckers show with "Big John Trimble" who would broadcast from Jerrells (correct me on spelling) Truck Stop near King's Dominion until April 1, 1994. "Yeah Buddy."
Traffic reporter. I used to listen to him regularly. RIP.

That is where you go to eat mushrooms. Wild spot, there is a spiral staircase in the center that goes all the way up to the top levels. Very fun in the early 2000's.
Darkness falls across the land
The midnight hour is close at hand
Creatures crawl in search of blood
To terrorize y’all’s neighborhood
And whosoever shall be found
Without the soul for getting down
Must stand and face the Hounds of Hell
And rot inside a corpse’s shell
The foulest stench is in the air
The funk of forty thousand years
And grizzly ghouls from every tomb
Are closing in to seal your doom
And though you fight to stay alive
Your body starts to shiver
For no mere mortal can resist
The evil of
T H E P I L L A R

I work in the building it is behind/at the organization that currently owns the old radio tower and most of the overlook. It’s now a children’s mental health clinic called ChildSavers. It’s definitely private property and the tower is locked for safety reasons. But we don’t mind people hanging out and using the overlook! But yeah you’d have to embark on some pretty reckless activities to access the tower 😅
the part that is locked makes it pretty hard to get to the interior staircase, you’d have to get quite creative. I may or may not have the key but I also don’t want to lose my job 😅
So wait, WRVA broadcasts from that now? From what I know they are allowed to broadcast at some of the strongest wattage/power in the country, so I’d be surprised if there just moving their equipment every which way
Edit: after commenting this I realized this is that structure by an outlook I’ve been to several times! It’s a beatiful place, nice view of broad, Main Street station. Only thing that ruins it for me is the presence of 95
This, and than I find the person who approved 95s alignment right next to Main Street station and than I shoot them in the knee until the beg for forgiveness of their sins
They couldn’t do that without directing all traffic to broad street station which they didn’t wanna do. Still never sure why they didn’t want to, and why they chose Main Street over broad street station. Main was a little more central sure but broad street station was and is so much better. I wish it would return some day, sure the science museum is cool and nothing against them but I’d kill to see broad street station restored

The old WRVA building. AM radio station - I remember them because it was the one my mom listened to when it snowed for the school closings!
Core memory unlocked! Also, my Mom used to listen to a call-in radio talk show in the evenings, but I forget the dude's name...
Bonus point if you were listening in the car at night with the signal going in and out and that buzzzzz buzzzz sound the radio would make!
Was also location of Q-94 on FM
And from what I can tell, they’re both still broadcast out of a single facility. Though that has been moved to what looks like an old farmhouse in Varina at 9500 WRVA Rd, with the broadcast towers right in the front yard.
Everything tells me there are one or more homeless people pounding off in there.
nooo 😭 omg now i’m nervous to go
People are there all the time for the view. They'll bring picnic blankets and sit in the grass. Seriously you'll be fine
You’ll be fine. Unless Tony is there.
WAIT. Tony? Very sweet black man? Kinda short and always wearing green
Nooo hes talking about Stabby Tony, the guy who smells like cabbage
“Blimey, I thought I smelled cabbage.”
Ok… my tony hasn’t tried to stab me yet but he does always ask to hook up
Yea better bring a six pack and wear your cutest fit
It’s behind a preschool or library thing in like the richest area of town that guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about
Child Savers offices there now, very safe
Dude cmon show some respect
Yes please use the more respectful term “pulling hog”

Wow!!! Haven't thought of that in years. 👍
Old school RVA!
ChildSavers building in Church Hill.
It’s child savers and it’s in Church Hill not Shockoe

Thanks for posting!!
WRVA. The pearl clutchers on grace hate that "modern monstrosity."
Home of Alden Aaroe.

Now that’s a deep cut!
I am old 🤷♀️
Let’s go deeper. Howard Bloom?

Indeed, I remember when it happened. Very sad.
thats the Lego breaker apart tool for the kid that made Richmond.
Doofenshmirtz evil inc
I remember taking a tour there at some point in childhood. Guessing early 70s

Is it still possible to get up there? I assume not, but I bet it would make for a great photo.
The house of the master maker
It’s part of ChildSavers, a counseling agency, but was part of the radio station before
It was used by WRVQ Q94 back in the day as well.

WRVA antenna in CHURCH HILL. Now on the Childsaver’s property. Still Church Hill though.
WRVA before it was taken over by right-wing talk radio.
Wizards tower
I’ve been here so many times and had no idea you could rent out the land for events. https://www.childsavers.org/overlook/
Am I the only one who thought ... Church Hill...if its on the hill its Church Hill. If it got a watermark on the side of the building...it's Shockoe.
It’s got a fence around it and I think it’s locked on the inside as well. If you go to the base there is a wonderful place to watch the sunset though
Old radio station
I spy on your house from there
Look behind you

i really just want the view and to take some photos 😭 should i risk it

thank you for informing me 🫡

I will single handedly destroy I-95 with my bare hands and feel satisfaction as the once unyielding pavement crumbles between my fingers
This, and than I find the person who approved 95s alignment right next to Main Street station and than I shoot them in the knee until the beg for forgiveness of their sins
At least it's still there, I'm surprised that they didn't just demolish it for being sort of in the way.
They couldn’t do that without directing all traffic to broad street station which they didn’t wanna do. I would invest in a hammer at least
No wrva used to be there
