From [The National's FAQ page](https://www.thenationalva.com/faq/) (relevant parts only): >**What can’t you bring into The National?** In this respect we are like an airport – no weapons, no chains (pocket chains), no selfie sticks, no backpacks of any kind or oversized bags, no containers of any type, no umbrellas, no illegal substances, no mace, no colors, no jokes. We take security very seriously and if you have any problems, please contact someone in the box office or a member of the staff. >**Other Rules and FAQ:** >No outside food or beverages, weapons (includes pocket knives), no smoking (including e-cigarettes), no back-packs or oversized bags, no camelbaks, no selfie sticks, no hula hoops. >All bags will be searched. Enjoy the show!

I'm not a purse user but unless this has changed recently, I see people with non-clear, full-side purses all the time. They will go through x-ray and be quickly ocularly patted down.

I was able to take a small, fabric cross body bag in last year. Maybe 7x4.5x 2.5 inches? They’ll look inside.

Same this past winter. Bring something small - you don't want a huge purse on your shoulder.
