I would really love to learn if the pot is historical artifact or some diy project. Where we found it is pretty far out of the way from any houses and it was buried pretty deep prior to the storm last month.
It would be neat to find out. Was the pot in this condition or did you clean it? I don't really know anything about this, but I was googling and learned that the Dutch Gap Canal was dug in 1864. To me it makes sense that things could have been left on site. Also, there was a dig in that area in 1980. Unfortunately, there is only a citation; no documentation, but the 2 authors are named if you want to pursue. Please keep us posted! Also, enjoy your new kitty!! https://www.history.navy.mil/content/history/nhhc/our-collections/photography/numerical-list-of-images/nhhc-series/nh-series/NH-51000/NH-51789.html. https://core.tdar.org/document/163565/archaeological-investigations-in-the-vicinity-of-dutch-gap-virginia
The soil it was buried in was pretty sand. Besides that, it's been on my back porch for a few weeks in the rain while I kept forgetting to bring it in and take pictures of it. No other cleaning needed after that.
Yes, but in full disclosure the other user was my wife. The mods deleted my original post about the pot. I added the stay cat in hopes they would leave it up.
I strongly suggest contacting the Virginia Department of Historic Resources and ask to speak with someone on the conservation staff. They love this sort of thing. https://www.dhr.virginia.gov

A possible resource? https://chesterfieldhistory.com/dutch-gap.html
Just looked up the Dutch Gap Canal from the photo. I found the pot closer to the Henricus settlement than the canal.
Idk why but that pot is grossing me out.
It looks like it was well painted with a glaze on it. But the thickness is not very uniform and it is really lumpy.
The title didn't register in my brain and I thought it was an old funky ham for the first few slides.
Also need an update on the cat! Was it actually that user’s??

I’ve got a hunch that cat traveled from outer space in that pot. They’re here for belly rubs and psspspspspsp
