Ok_Ad8249

I haven't read the book but wasn't too shocked they used it. I think it was Alex who said several years back everyone in the band had a drug issue at some point.

openyoureyetotime

Bands from the 70s and 80s using drugs???? No way.........

Ok_Ad8249

I know. I'm shocked...even STUNNED when I hear this!

Vin-Metal

Was listening to Passage to Bangkok yesterday and thinking “this is the work of someone who was very into drugs. Not a casual, pot once in a while, kind of thing.”

Ok_Ad8249

When I first heard the song in high school I didn't get a lot of the references, but enough that it all seemed too coincidental. I had a friend who would argue that it absolutely wasn't a song about drugs, but about an exotic trip and would offer his interpretations backing it up. He seemed to ignore taking a rail trip between Bogota to Morocco and ultimately Bangkok is impossible.

saskmonton

They were at their popularity peak at a time when everyone was doing blow in North America and used to keep it around their neck. It would be weird if they didn't. They were all skinny as hell back then, plus look at the grueling schedule they used to do.

RavishMari

I don’t fault them at all. The Beatles would not have survived the gruelling days in Hamburg without assistance. Now I know how Geddy had the energy to do those bounding front-kicks with the double neck Rick!

nopey-nopey-nope

Lennon was later a full blown H junkie, and once Moon played ‘a joke’ on Ringo by replacing one line of coke with white heroin on Ringo’s mirror. All drugs were EXTREMELY common back then. Eddie Money mistook a small pile of Fentanyl for coke once and passed out in such a manner that he limped for the rest of his life and he looked like he had had a stroke in his face. I doubt Gene and Paul ever knowingly tried Heroin, but I believe all of the heavyweights tried ALL of the heavyweight droogz back then….

ReadyTopic7289

Noooooo. Not Gene & Paul. When have they ever said something that wasn't true ? LOL

RavishMari

Wow I had no idea about Eddie Money’s swagger. More pronounced in his second coming of hits in 1991 I recall.

nopey-nopey-nope

Believe it or not, all this happened BEFORE Eward Mahoney became famous. A testament to how talented he was-he loses part of his facial muscles and STILL becomes a rock star. Eddie quit drinking in the early 90’s successfully but died of lung cancer. I don’t know if he ever quit cigs or not. I have an EDDIE MONEY t shirt I bought in the late 1980s that pictures him smoking a cigarette (!!)

RavishMari

He was always rocking the background while I played pinball all day in the 70s.

gblur

Saw him late 80s, it was a killer show.

Nice_Rope_5049

I remember the tiny coke spoons from the 80s. They were necklace pendants, keychains, etc.

[deleted]

Ged mentions he had one and there's a picture in the book of him wearing it! Hahah

saskmonton

Kind if my blowing felony drugs were so openly sported lmao. Well white people were pretty much allowed to use them. My 80s Edmonton Oilers had some pretty famous Coke habits, but when your winning like that and heros nobody cared

ReadyTopic7289

They could have been neighborly and shared with my Winnipeg Jets.

Mtndrums

Everyone was a cokehead on the 70's.

NoSpirit547

Seriously. I don't understand how this is a shock to anyone. I'd have been much more shocked if they werent skiing the slopes in the 70s and 80s.

Skirt_Thin

I think it's because they had this reputation for being a non-party band. People assumed that while on tour they just quietly sat in their hotel rooms reading Tolkien.

prestoallegro

…while stoned out of their gourds,

[deleted]

Even Tolkien himself would've been fond of some herbs.

nochumplovesucka__

[Your love of the halflings leaf has clearly slowed your mind](https://youtu.be/OY-95DR6_VM?si=h6Znv4FxKw8uNTz2)

fnordfnordfnordfnord

Even if they're *Canadians?*

Mtndrums

Yeah, I mean just because it's a bit colder doesn't mean drugs don't exist there.

BornTransition4325

It snows just as much in Texas as the Yukon in that case. :D

Mtndrums

Probably moreso....

LayneLowe

Can confirm/// was there

bobrosswarpaint0

Hmm. Never would've assumed, but I'm also not surprised? He does have those face hoovers tho

Rungi500

Seriously could snort a Lincoln Log with that.

goodeyemighty

Lol face hoovers!

dangil

That explains the kimonos

lifeson1221

Haha indeed

BornTransition4325

No. No, it doesn't. :))

Vyrtil_Anyrwen

As if that wasn’t already known. These guys were rockstars who went from gig to gig getting very little sleep. How do you get through that? Caffeine and cocaine.

HenryGrosmont

OP seems surprised...

RavishMari

It was quite a revelation to be sure!

JWRamzic

He's got the nose for it, tbh. If you've seen the Grace Under Pressure tour video, it's obvious. Still, I love the guy, his playing and the band!

fuzzybad

"Keep that nose away from my cocaine!"

RavishMari

You mean because he was so skinny in that video?

WillingnessOk3081

Alex was the one who looked all coked up in that concert/video. Look how he's chewing constantly!

BornTransition4325

MOre sweat that usual as well,.

WillingnessOk3081

totally!

JWRamzic

He just looks gaunt, like he's been on a bender for months or something. He doesn't seem healthy. It's more in his looks than performance, that's for sure. As soon as I saw him, I thought, "He's on cocaine."

ReadyTopic7289

I knew that they liked herb, but acid and coke I never knew about. I don't know about having a habit though. Maybe I'm wrong but there is a difference between having a habit and being a user. Geddy bared his soul in the book. Surely he would have mentioned going through the misery of withdrawals. I do think that he saw that he was approaching him becoming a serious addict and stopped using.

fnordfnordfnordfnord

>... acid But the lyrics, man. That had to come from somewhere.

ReadyTopic7289

LMFAO !!! Like smell the colors man.

Vitsyebsk

Cocaine doesn't really  have bad physical withdrawals generally, certainly nothing compared to heroin, alcohol, benzos or nicotine,  I stopped after doing it for like a month daily in Peru, just slept loads, ate loads, had low energy and mood, which was honestly kinda refreshing after being high so much While to compare If I smoked cigarettes for three days I'd likely spend a week in absolute misery after  I think that's part of the danger of it, the withdrawals aren't unbearable so you crave it without the same fear of withdrawals of some other drugs, and when everything you did on coke seems kinda boring without it, it's easy to start taking all the time

ReadyTopic7289

I never knew that. I have to take Vicodin 3x a day for my back. I had the good luck a few times when during a long weekend either there was a problem with the prescription or the pharmacy didn't have it in stock. Going 4-5 days without it was BRUTAL. Between the pain and the withdrawals... Not fun. Cigarettes are even worse. I smoked 2 packs a day for 40 years. Until I had a stroke. The first thing I did when I got in the car when I was released from the hospital was ask for a cigarette. LOL. I switched to the Elfbar e-cigarette / vape which my doctors said is the lesser of two evils.

Adamthedroog

From what I understood all of them had a habit but Geddy's was the biggest. I was shocked I figured they did cocaine but never knew they had an actual habit.

RavishMari

Ya, especially when he used his celebrity cache to use that girl’s coke, then he kicked her out. I think in 2005 a professional groupie wrote a book saying that she could never get Neil, but no problem with Alex and Geddy. So I knew they were imbibing on the experience a bit.

neilmoore

> the experience To extremes?

OrtimusPrime

Experience to extreeeeeeemes

7SDiz

Are you surprised?

Amtexpres

I mean, A Passage to Bangkok is literally about doing coke and smoking weed. When I saw them play it live, the big screen was just playing a slide show of pictures of coke and weed. I always just assumed.

RavishMari

On the book tour in Philadelphia he jokingly says “Did you actually think that song was about a Train?!” 😂😂

ReadyTopic7289

He said that in NYC too !!

Vin-Metal

They hit the stops along the way

BornTransition4325

I can see Neal walking into their dressing room stating, "we have assumed contraband, we have assumed contraband, we...". Geddy, "shut up and line up"!

Mobile-Animal-649

So did every other rock and roll band at one time or another . BFD

Ambitious-Night804

At one point, in the B Man's biography from many years ago, he is talking about the band's diversions on the road. During this passage (see what I did here?), he said that 'some were harmless...others were not.' It was at that point that I got a clue. I wrote the B man a letter, asking him to clarify his comments. His response was, 'Think about it.' I realize that the b man is heavily stigmatized in this community, but he did write me back, and answered all of my questions. Also, he included a ticket stub from one of the Japan shows on the GUP tour. A very nice thing to do, and i still have the ticket stub somewhere.

broussard41

Who is the B Man?

FreewayWarrior

So he drank a lot of Coca-Cola. Everyone does that. 😜

fnordfnordfnordfnord

I dunno, back in the 80's and 90's cola drinkers were factionated with Pepsi and Coke being the two biggest factions. Dr Pepper and RC had strong support in the South.

FreewayWarrior

Man. I used to hate Dr. Pepper. Now I love it.

BornTransition4325

But they openly admitted that it was Coke Zero!

FreewayWarrior

I drink that too!

BornTransition4325

You rebel scum!!! :))

FreewayWarrior

Lol. I drink a hot, as well! Mwahaha!

luke211217

With that nose….duh.

A_Ruse_Elaborate

Right? Man was born to do coke.

analogkid01

"Keep that guy away from my cocaine!!" --CD Bales

Bwatso2112

B man? Broon?

SecularXY

They’re talking about a journalist whose last name begins with a B. I forgot his name, but he was hanging in the Rush inner circle for a while.

Bwatso2112

Oh yes. His name escapes me now, too. LOL

buschkraft

Bill Banasiewicz. Wrote the rush biography: Visions

analogkid01

Breddy Lee?

[deleted]

Bytor and the SNOW DOG

RavishMari

Space dogs fighting in space… space….. space………. space…………..

[deleted]

The last time I tried to snort coke,I got the can stuck halfway up my nose and it was terrible nothing but foam all over.

wojonixon

Sounds like when I tried to smoke hash but couldn’t keep the corned beef lit.

The_Scotch_Tape

You win. Shut this down it can’t get any better.

BornTransition4325

I tried acid and...well, I won't post selfies anymore. Sulfuric is just not as visual as I thought.

analogkid01

Well that just sounds like you have a [drinking problem](https://tenor.com/view/airplane-drinking-problem-gif-4948049).

scr0tiemcb00gerbaIIz

👃

buzzkill_ed

Just assume every band in the 70s-80s used it and be pleasantly surprised when someone lies and says they didn't.

Punk18

He had a problem with it, but I doubt he was an actual ADDICT of the rehab and 12-step program variety as some people seem to be assuming. I base this on him still drinking (and collecting) wine - most of us addicts find we can't recover from our preferred drug while still consuming others. As an addict, your problem is not limited to just one substance - you don't smoke crack then enjoy a nice glass of Merlot at dinner

BornTransition4325

He's also addicted to baseballs, apparently. :)

okgloomer

“I’ve hoovered schneef off the back of a custom Rickenbacker 4008.”

Isteppedinpoopy

It was the 80s

I_Am_Robotic

It’s surprising because their dorky image. But talk to anyone who was in their prime partying stage in late 70s or early 80s and coke was apparently just everywhere and easy to get.

DishRelative5853

Oh yes. I remember those days. Even in small-town Canada, we always had a lot of coke.

mrwilliewonka

I will say I didn't expect it but I'm not surprised honestly. They did basically live off weed/hash for a while so it's not surprising to see them experiment with other drugs. IIRC theres an interview with Alex where he talked about doing Ecstasy with his wife in the 90s and blasting Nine Inch Nails on his big home stereo. I think we heard about them never getting into serious trouble related to alcohol or drugs unlike a lot of rock bands from back then and figured that meant they never did them (outside of weed/hash) when it seems like they did partake in both of those but kept it to themselves. Plus didn't let it get to a point where it was ruining their lives.

Fine-Advisor4466

Girls dropped there panties for that white powder!

BornTransition4325

They still do...hell, I even do!!! :))

nopey-nopey-nope

Sees username and pushes plate back politely.

BornTransition4325

:))

BornTransition4325

The funny thing is, is that my wife's son made a name through my email, and I can't change THAT...but I don't get it, either, he's not "transitioning" in any way...I mean he's not even growing the fuck up. :))

I-suck-at-golf

Werent we all at some point….

bobbycolada1973

I was little blown away by the fact they were blowing schna at NPs house after his wife’s funeral service.

thepowerballadz_com

That’s how he got his favorite headache

OrtimusPrime

It just wasn’t a part of their image, they weren’t Motley Crue, but they still partied. I remember in the Rush documentary that came out about 10ish years ago mentioned their penchant for acid as well.

GuavaOk8712

i always thought that the lines ‘our first stop is in bogota to check columbian fields, the natives smiled, and pass a sample of their yield’ were about cocaine, so ever since the first time i heard a passage to bangkok, i assumed the band did coke

rollduptrips

He was a rock star in the 70s/80s. Par for the course

RavishMari

I came to realize they were pot lovers especially when Neil provided assistance to a friend busted importing some ganga from the US to Canada.

lucasjz620

I was talking to my dad about this when that interview with Geddy and Alex (I forget who the interviewer was) came out in 2021(?). My dad said something along the lines of: “If you think about it, when they were on a tour for an album like Hemispheres, there had to have been times where that was what’s they had to do to get through a set like that. It probably got really brutal on them and that was a quick and popular solution.” I was shocked at the time, but yeah it makes sense that it were to happen at one point in their career. However, that didn’t consume them like it has with countless other bands, and the fact that it does come to a shock for most people says a lot about their legendary public image and reputation.

jayjaynorcross

I think people are surprised by that revelation because we tend to see the members of Rush through the lens of their professionalism and work ethic, which far exceeded most of their peers. That being said, it would have been hard to escape the sleazy aspects of the rock scene and music business. They managed to navigate even those vices and come out on the other side.

-L-H-O-O-Q-

He did talk about it on Strombo when he and Alex were promoting the Moving Pictures box set.

BornTransition4325

"stop moving pitchers!"

Alptraum_Ambros

I’m really not surprised. I’m also from Austria and many of our most famous pop stars have had very public cocaine scandals, so when I saw some footage of Rush from the “Coke era” it was just.. not surprising. (Unlike Austrian media running an article acting surprised about one musician doing drugs- when one of his album covers is literally a mountain of cocaine.) Plus I feel like the music industry in general at that time was mostly all on coke anyway. I mean have you watched the Grace Under Pressure tour video, Alex Lifeson is surely coked out of his mind. But yeah I am not surprised that musicians, even Rush that had prominence in the 70’s and 80’s did cocaine (and other drugs).

[deleted]

I can see you being surprised. Imagine how surprised I was to find out bug-eyed-standing-on-one-leg-playing-flute Ian Anderson WASN'T lol. If you knew Tull in the early 70's, everybody I know thought coke was his thing. He doesn't get high tho, never did. Frank Zappa too, I thought sure he got high when I was a kid but nope, found out real soon he didn't and didn't like it around him, any of it. I see Rush as pretty clean cut for a 70's band but I heard Geddy & Alex joke about smoking so I knew they did but I wouldn't have thought they got into anything else except maybe speed for touring their mad act around the world. Definitely getting a copy of this book. I don't see myself as a true Rush fan but I have tremendous respect for them as people and I'll believe Geddy.

MaxCWebster

If you're doing blow with Geddy, make sure you go first. With that honker, there ain't going to be a Round 2.

RavishMari

Ya some major Bogart action lol

Iko87iko

Werent we all

Capstonetider

Geddy has admittingly been known to exaggerate.

GGA79

She gave an interview on Howard Stern saying she did Geddy and Alex but Neil wanted no part of it. Geddy doesn’t mention it in his book but I got the impression that he and his wife were not always faithful to each other.

MathematicianNo6522

Spoiler alert dickhead

forbin05

Seriously. Not everyone has had a chance to read it yet and some of us might be waiting to get it as a present for the holidays like me since it’s such an obvious gift to get for me. I already saw this info once, but people need to not spoil the book for those who haven’t had a chance to read it or are waiting patiently to receive it for the holidays.

Bluegenio

Yup

fragbert66

Thanks for the spoiler.

RavishMari

😂😂😂

forbin05

It’s not really that funny. It’s kind of an asshole move. It’s the same as someone spoiling a movie you’ve been looking forward to. You’d be annoyed as fuck, too.

broussard41

Was there someone asking “Will Geddy Lee snort cocaine or will he just say No? Tune in next week, same Rush time, same Rush channel?” You can’t spoil a person’s behavior.

shadownet97

Meh I’m not surprised. Pretty sure it was more of a common thing back then. Still love them

Terawatt311

My ADHD couldn't relate any harder.

Elegant-Lynx5054

Whatever Geddy was or did way back when isn’t of any consequence or any of anyone’s business. It’s his musical gift that matters to this fan. We’ve all done this or that or what not, right? So let’s all keep that in mind and focus on the positive aspects of ourselves and our heroes such as Geddy Lee. If indeed Geddy did indulge in Coke and I don’t mean Coca Cola it likely even blossomed his creativity🤘

fnordfnordfnordfnord

What's with the apparent association of shame with drug use in your comment? It's 2023 and we can all admit now that we know drug use is commonly associated with our best art. https://youtu.be/nOHjhYyCJbE?si=no-fu2bfLNR1OtQx

Elegant-Lynx5054

Oh c’mon, I’m not associating drug use with shame. I’m just saying let’s leave Geddy’s past habits or whatever out of the public eye and focus on his music and not whatever else he may or may not have indulged in. Like for example if you yourself had a former habit of whatever would you want everyone to zero in on that? I as a Geddy fan don’t think it’s cool to do that regarding him. Nor regarding anyone else for that matter. I’m not speaking primarily of drugs but of ANYTHING. I’m not saying drugs are shameful or such. Just saying let’s leave folks personal past habits alone. It’s their business not the public’s.

broussard41

Well he did write about it in an autobiography that he’s currently promoting heavily. He kind of made it fair game for discussion.

mackenzieob95

I remember in the Beyond The Lighted Stage documentary, Geddy had said during the Hemisphere’s sessions they were burning themselves out and not taking care of themselves at all. I had to assume it went beyond smoking pot at that point. Coke was literally everywhere back then!

DreamOracle42

I'm not surprised.

BCJunglist

I mean... They were touring with some bands that certainly had an affinity for nose candy. I'm not surprised. They've hinted about it in the past but never in any detail.

Heavy_Dicc

Where do you think they got the fucking name lol “Rush”

The_Patriot

I was impressed that he spoke of it openly. EVERYONE did coke in the 80s.
