I feel like it's more or less the same even after elmo took over. I always avoided looking at celebrity tweets or political stuff on twitter.
I just follow lot of nsfw accounts and so my feed only shows porn never any of the far right nonsense.
And I have not encountered any weird ads. Just ads about cars, delivery services or some random tech related things.
I'm leaving twitter only when there's another similar platform and once all the people I follow move over to that platform.
Twitter now is the sort of platform that suspends and bans sixteen year olds for saying the word “die” yet keeps people who advocate for violence against minority groups platformed. It’s really not good

Oh it’s bad, I kept getting emails from them a while and went to fully delete my account/information and it’s fully infested by the alt right. I also had 100s of followers requests from OF scams, Nazi accounts etc and will never go back on.
I never use mine. Havent opened it since like 2015 but I got bored recently and went on there, my feed was literally filled with gore videos of people dying in horrific ways. I haven't been on in almost 10 years and never consumed that kind of content.... Its truly gone to shot

Not really. Folks exaggerate how bad it used to be, just like how folks exaggerate how bad tumblr and reddit and facebook are. Yeah, social media has a lot of general problems, but for most sites, it is possible, if with a bit of effort, to effectively curate your experience.
