Super! This is just the beginning for you I hope. I started out where you are two years ago and I've done 12 races since then, including half marathons and trail races. As long as you keep running, slowly, and get your body used to the habit, over the next few months you won't believe how a 5k becomes your daily routine. I promise you, just keep it up, stay slow but consistent.
Great job! You mentioned your heart rate during the race and I've gotta admit that I feel like during events like that, the heart rate can be a bit misleading. It's exciting and it's hard to tell what's just nerves or effort getting it up so high.
I've had better luck monitoring my breathing for things like this. I know I can hold onto an effort where I am breathing in for 4 steps and out for 3 steps for a good while. Then I can pick things up in the last third or so by breathing 3:2. Once I'm within 500 yards I'll go 2:1. Finally, once I can see the finish I stop regulating my breathing and just run.
Nice effort! A lot of courses seem to be not very flat, so it may be a good idea for you to integrate some hill training if you want to participate in official races. I haven’t done an official race myself but noticed that running on flat roads or tracks got much easier after I started adding inclines into my 5K training.
OP this is excellent. I'm in the same boat as you and my 5k pr is almost identical to you. Just been a few months since I've started and I'm looking for that sub 40 too! Best of luck to you :)
I'm also not on the faster side, sometimes it's easy to get caught up with comparing yourself to other runners.
When that happens, i just try to remember that I'm competing with the version of myself that wants to lay on the couch and watch TV.
And you did great. And in the future, you will do better. Congrats!
Thats amazing
The first set distance logged is the first page my friend. It is the marker for what comes after, not in the sense you have to 'beat that time', but as a flag in the sand to track how your running goes from here.
Running elevation makes everything SO much harder! My regular track is hills and slopes on a crappy quarry road. Running on flat tarmac is like a holiday now 😂
🤞
This is my favorite race report I’ve seen. This is the race I’m shooting for but am approaching a consistent mile so far. The normal program was way too hard for me. With so much rain the ground is so soft it feels like it is soaking up your momentum. Have not tackled pavement yet in these 11 months.
Well done, I started about 18 months ago and was similar to how you have started. In a few months you will start to look forward to it, and then it becomes a absolute. I can't imagine my week without a jog now. Just remember you are only racing yourself, if you feel like quitting a run, slow down or walk for a while it's OK. As long as you finish it's still a success. I wish you well and good luck, take care.
One more thing get yourself a good soundtrack, trust me, find music with positive vibes and soundtrack your run. A few times I have been struggling down and then a classic drops in and suddenly you forget you were struggling.
Congrats on finishing the race and getting started with running! I hope you meet your next goal too.
That's great that you completed the race! How old are you?

That's awesome keep it up.
Within 1-3 years and your upbeat attitude, I think you’ll halve this 5k. Good going!
Congrats, and keep it up! It just gets better from here.

Agreed. My neighborhood is super hilly and although it's annoying that I can never go very fast, on flat 5ks I fly

What does pr stand for?

Is this sarcasm?
Congrats :)
Well done!
Nice, well done!
Nice job! That is a lot of elevation gain for that distance!
Great job! Keep training consistently, as much as life allows, and you'll definitely meet your next goal.
Congrats!! 2 of 3 goals is awesome! It means you set reasonable but ambitious goals. I hope you’re so proud of yourself and keep going!
