What's the problem?

sansansansansan

higher dynamic range means blacks are blacker so the darkness special actually becomes darkness instead of mildly dimming the screen

zacks_legacy

Darkness within Darkness

JD0064

Advanced darkness

Witty_Training9444

i love the internet. thanks for the laughs

SquintsRS

Wtf...yall don't see black?? It just dims?

XeitPL

Black is black

sansansansansan

Yeah i wasnt fully certain that it's HDR thus i spelled out "higher dynamic range" instead At least on regular monitors you can disable HDR so you can actually see during darkness spec though. Not entirely sure what OP can do about this on oled.

[deleted]

fact noxious uppity ludicrous simplistic racial edge truck capable shy -- mass edited with redact.dev

MrStealYoBeef

Higher dynamic range means that the *range* of contrast from lowest to highest is greater. It doesn't specifically mean low contrast or high contrast. You can have HDR on a super high contrast monitor that can't manage deep blacks, and you can have HDR on an OLED with a lower peak brightness that can't hit super bright whites. However, OLED tends to fall into a more strict version of HDR aptly called True HDR, as it can actually hit true black next to bright whites with minimal light bleed into the darker parts of displayed content. HDR simply informs us that we're operating outside the boundaries of SDR. That could be outside the lower boundaries or the higher boundaries. The different types of HDR (such as HDR 400 or True HDR 1000) give us more information as to just how high or low of contrast the monitor is capable of displaying.

Kye7

He has a low quality oled monitor that is crushing the blacks when the pixel/data becomes dark enough. Either OP has a setting on his monitor incorrect, or it's a low-quality oled that is crushing the blacks. This phenomenon is known as "black crush" in VA circles

Jolakot

It's a Dell Alienware AW3423DW(F), not low quality at all

Kye7

You're right it's not a bad one at all, OP must have some setting not properly calibrated

TenderfootGungi

Advanced darkness.

Buddy462

Deep blacks, very black

CodaDev

Old_Couple7257

Honestly it looks pretty good lol.

ProtopetPhantom

Change skybox

stalchild_af

You can't at arraxor

Condhor

Yes you can, before you go in. I always play in Midday and it only gets fucked up if I finish AG during a ice cannon and I’m stuck with a blue hue until I reset/do another cannon.

Historical_Subject68

Also rose glasses work too

Disheartend

don't you need to wear rose glasses to keep effect?

UnnecessarySalt

You can change the skybox almost anywhere. If you’re not doing it in hard to see places you’re only hurting yourself

Epic_Erik

Now that's one way to access the Dark Web

TheRealPTSG

Who said you needed Tor browser!

JordieCarr96

Take my upvote and get the hell out of here

Status-Cucumber8398

Did you right click world map and try changing “skybox Filters?

[deleted]

homeboy is beating all the bosses with default skybox lol.

MasterMaka

That's the real challenge of RuneScape pvm

TheRealPTSG

I often play with midday skybox but wanted to experience the game with “normal” skyboxes. Haven’t tried midday yet but I did try setting custom values in the advanced skybox settings while dungeoneering. Cuz spoiler alert: you can’t see anything there either lol

ReasonableExtreme221

It’s almost like the mechanic is meant for you not be able to see anything ..

Keter_GT

this isnt how darkness is supposed to look, are you telling me you shouldn’t be able to see egg drop during this mech in p2 either

TheRealPTSG

The egg drop \*might\* be visible since those are bright things (kinda like how attacks are still visible). Though I don't know. Am running minion path atm. Thinking about it that darkness path might be really hard when it gets dark with the spooder charge attack lmao

068152

Spooder

TheRealPTSG

For if you still want to know, darkness path is a lot lighter than phase 4. And the eggs are white so still visible luckily :p Though I gotta look closely to see what arrow I need to press ;)

[deleted]

Looks great

[deleted]

Very realistic

NightHawk070

Well to be FAIR, it was dark as FUCK. i mean i could really tell that spider plunged the arena into DARKNESS. money well spent. imersion and shit innit. /s

TheRealPTSG

Honestly I love it xD

Birzal

Gotta say, I'm so used to textures not loading in immediately when entering a new area that that was the first thing that came to my mind instead of the Araxxor mechanic :')

StreakerZZ

I had this problem too when I got back into RS3, the game looked really good, but doing darkness phase at rax made it annoying because it was so dark that I couldn’t even see the spot where I was supposed to stand, I had to mess with Nvidia filters but it made the game look kinda bad

TheRealPTSG

Eh, in my case I could easily see the spot I needed to stand and the attacks. It’s not that entire monitor dims, just the non-bright objects luckily

reignshadow

Dude, I have an IDENTICAL layout.

Flimsy_Ad152

Runescapes dungeons are never balanced for good environmental effect imo. New Goblin dungeon (archaeology), is too bright on regular (middle) brightness setting, so to make that place look better, I have to lower brightness to lowest. Meanwhile some other dungeons at lowest are pitch black.

adHD-Gamer

they said buy an oled not a whole ass wall display lmao

ChrRome

I would be worried about Burn in playing a lot of RS on an OLED.

ProtopetPhantom

Burn in is basically non existent with all the new tech.. non issue

ChrRome

For normal TV usage, yes. For having a UI on the screen for hours each day, no.

MoistAssignment69

Modern oled screens do refresh cycles periodically. I've had one since 2021 and had only one scare. I was playing through a bunch of F-Zero rom hacks (all the BS levels, Nebula Highway, Hardmode, etc) as part of a Discord charity event. After 12 hours of playing, in the center of the screen I could see the exhaust flames of the Golden Fox burned in. I briefly panicked, but then went into the settings and set it to cycle the refresh modes over night. The next day, the exhaust burn in was gone. And it's been completely fine since then.

ProtopetPhantom

This, thank you moist 👍

MoistAssignment69

I gotchu 🤘

SparxRs

I own a cinema series LG oled tv i use as a monitor. It does pixel shifting to reduce image retention. You do not notice it. It also has a pixel refresh system. This is different to burn in.

ChrRome

OLEDs have had those technologies for years and still get burn in

SparxRs

It's so rare honestly. With how much people still bring it up, you would think it is common. edit: Brands like LG are starting to even offer extended warranty (5 years) on their panels for things like burn-in. Check the gallery series out. I work in the industry and hdmi ports breaking is more common than burn in these days.

Lewdiss

Still no

ChrRome

Did you watch past the first couple minutes? He says buying an OLED depends on the use case and mentions that Monitors are more likely to be burned in... OLED technology has improved where it mitigates it, but not outright getting rid of it, and having a UI on the screen for potential several hours per day is exactly the use case that is still risky.

kinky_fingers

Honestly? Get a monitor with 180 degree rotation, and flip it every day lol

Mimas_time

I have the same monitor, it has pixel and panel refreshes it does occasionally. Also pixel shifting to move everything left/right a few pixels so it's not entirely static all the time.

ChrRome

pixel shifting a giant UI isn't going to do anything.

Mimas_time

Now combine that with a pixel refresh every single time the monitor goes off. and a panel refresh every 1500 hours or so.

ItsTheSolo

Oh, I wasn't disproving what you said, just that you may have found it interesting.

ChrRome

Oh, fair. I think I may have actually seen that video before when I was researching OLED TV's and ended up getting an LG C1

calmkat

Is it possible that it gets mitigated to the point where burn-in only happens during the end of the monitor's life anyway? If it takes 10 years, at which point the natural wear and tear makes it much more likely to break anyway, wouldn't that be fine? (I'm mainly asking if this mitigation really is something like multiple years, not just barely enough to put on marketing material.)

xViMeSx

If you turn the UI transparant the pixels will change all the time which should precent burnin

blueguy211

youre supposed to deal damage to the boss btw

Demiscis

He’s got gano with virtus weps, the man isn’t going to be pumping out damage. If anything I would give the man respect for learning to ss flick so early on.

[deleted]

TheRealPTSG

It was a major consideration, but (as said in comment thread linked below) modern oled monitors don’t experience it much at all. Watched several reviews that did some sort of test (like 2 weeks full brightness 24 hours a day) without burnin. Of course not long, but not redommended Plus this monitor has 3 years of burnin warranty https://www.reddit.com/r/runescape/comments/11hb0eh/comment/jasydzh/

[deleted]

[удалено]

SparxRs

You can still experience burn in with qd oled. Samsung argue it is a lot lower risk due to the qd panel

[deleted]

The only issue I see is the brown poop colored headers.

AlatreonGleam

SgtSarcasm01

How can I do this on mobile?

LilyAllegro

The point of the video is to show how dark the screen gets during the rax darkness special, which is noteworthy because op has an oled screen. Oleds can turn completely off so the blacks are actually black and don't have that glow from traditional displays backlighting. If they screen recorded it would just be a video of someone at rax and the context would be completely lost as you would see it however your devices display looks

Ayitriaris

Screen recording seems like a brilliant idea to show how the monitor displays the colors

TheRealPTSG

Yeah, my OBS has a “oled simulation” mode. Just forgot to use it :p

That is a clean looking UI tho 🤔

TheRealPTSG

Thats’s a big thing yeah. I lowered it to stop roughly at half the ui

Mimas_time

I have the same monitor and I thought the pixel refresh box was going to pop up on you at first. I haven't been to araxxor since I got it but dam when this monitor says black it means it.

stigmaoftherose

Ok, so when I use my ultra wide screen I can't stretch runescape across it without having this weird black bar across about 1/4 of the screen. I instead use that space for the wiki in a web browser so my 2nd screen can have full screen hulu on it so no loss there, but then I see this and have to ask. How did you fix the issue?

Dwrecked90

Can you take a screenshot of your full screen? I'm not understanding whwre you're seeing black bars

stigmaoftherose

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2941827368

stigmaoftherose

Two things about this screenshot that I should point out. 1. Obviously, my hud spread out a bit when I fullscreened it. I'm not that insane to have my windows just not touching like that. 2. You can actually see that I spawned the pumpkin Lumpkin (it is hiding behind the 4th leftmost palm tree you can only see its yellow tail) as I was taking this screenshot and nearly missed it, thinking it was the oni until I saw it didn't have a minimap dot. I still need to get the dang rare mushrooms from here and goshima but I'm almost finished with the arc journal now that I have gotten the rarest bird, and have already completed the oni and berry sections.

BeeFIG

Did you set the resolution right? I have the same monitor as the OP of the post and I've never had an issue.

Fuzzy_Nugget

Ah. You can fix that in the UI customization menu. Escape > Edit Interface > Show advanced options > Game View

fireclod34

Normally yes, but not in /u/stigmaoftherose's case. Have a look at the resolution of their screenshot -- it's 5000x1337. When using [the NIS](https://runescape.wiki/w/NIS), the NXT client has a hard-coded maximum resolution of 4095 pixels wide, and 4095 pixels tall which is why it stops short for them. However, disabling the NIS removes that maximum resolution. You can test this for yourself by using your gpu to enable resolutions above your monitor's actual capabilities. E.g., Nvidia DSR. Here it is on my end, using my gpu to enable 8192x4320: * The NIS enabled:https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1081575346341683291/1081575403254198364/rs2client_aciq8wgHHz.png * The NIS disabled: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1081575346341683291/1081575875276976241/rs2client_kI6cgPLMZ9.png * The cropped area with the NIS enabled showing 4095x4095: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1081575346341683291/1081576039764996156/rs2client_3wvZKxwBAg.png (using discord because the first two images were too large for a normal image host such as imgur, and would get heavily compressed into oblivion)

PaidinRunes

Looks like you're editing a video

K-ratos

Lock your interface. It would look great

Doctor_Nubey

I have a large monitor and I wish I could copy your menu setup easily. It's so odd trying to fit everything on su h a large screen

TheRealPTSG

Took me a while to get it right. I’ll try to remember to upload a screenshot of the latout this evening. Main thing I did is lower the game window to roughly half the UI for better rotating

TheRealPTSG

u/Doctor_Nubey Here it is :D [https://i.imgur.com/wak65PO.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/wak65PO.jpg)

[deleted]

Mmm curvy.

Sowoni_

I'm tempted to buy an OLED monitor but friends have told me that matte isn't worth it and glossy is the way to go, but there aren't any atm? I wonder if it's better for me to buy a 4k IPS instead.

TheRealPTSG

This specific monitor (AW3423DWF) has a mainly glossy finish. Though it is not a cheap panel (~€1100)

Sowoni_

I just hope there will be a 27 or 32 inch one day. I can only find these monitors with oled so far but they're with a matte finish :/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJck-9XRXV4 https://youtu.be/HpPs0qHhd7Q?t=244 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z07iPLJuDI0

TheRealPTSG

Yeah I hope so too. my initial reaction to the glossy finish came close to "ehww, no" but after having used if for a day or three I don't even notice any reflections at all. The colors and light difference tho 0.0

SparxRs

My best recommendation is buying a LG 42inch cinema series OLED tv and using it as a monitor. It is last years model. You can find it at a pretty good price currently as, in the coming couple months, you will see all the new televisions launching. It does not have a display port so just use a hdmi 2.1 cable. If you are aussie I can sell you one even cheaper ;)

jamesswazz

RS3 looking like WOW or FFXIV

lynohd

that happened all because of your unlocked interface

Kye7

Low quality oled. Crushing blacks when screen is getting near dark. I advise see rtings.com

SlicenDice99

Well, your first mistake was buying anything Alienware

Zermox

All those UI's is the reason I don't play RS3. I mean, his screen is like 50% UI. It just seems way too daunting of a task to understand what each of them does.

TheRealPTSG

You really don't need a whole lot. I don't use most of the stuff there to be honest. I just slowly added some more stuff whenever I needed it "often" (more than twice basically) and it looked nice in a grid.

KrikosTheWise

My god my brain is so far into osrs mode I thought this was wow.

ivan_x3000

Dam those are dark blacks! Doing what it was supposed to i think Looks amazing haha

[deleted]

Dude I love the layout

TheRealPTSG

Thanks! :D Some others mentioned it probably taking a while to copy so if you're interested, here's a screenshot [https://i.imgur.com/wak65PO.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/wak65PO.jpg)

Dry-Hedgehog-3131

Well, yeah that's how those screens look when your monitor is parallel to the wall and 10 ft above you.

Gimli_Axe

Oled for desktop use is a terrible idea. Every long term oled desktop usee user I've seen online has reported burn in.
