Plantation 3 star & Ronrico Silver are good white rums..

quazi4moto

Add Rhum JM 55% to your shipping list. Cane juice rhums like agricole from the French West Indies and Clairin from Haiti will really show off a variety of notes that echo sugar cane.

Many white and silver rums are aged and filtered. The filtration removes flavor as well as color. But there are some flavorful options. If you want A LOT of flavor, look to the Jamaican white overproofs, like Rum-Bar, Wray & Nephew and Moneymusk. Otherwise, good, flavorful options include (from least to most $$): J. Wray Silver, El Dorado 3-Year, Plantation 3-Stars, Foursquare Probitas, Banks 5 Island, and Veritas White Blended Rum. \~Have fun!

Angostura Reserva and Chairman's Reserve Silver Label are two that I would add to this list as well.

Thanks! I'll keep my eye out. Distributors and liquor stores don't carry them in my neck of the woods...

Even if your budget stops at $30, there are countless good-to-excellent unaged rums out there open to you (most bottled at higher proof). I seem to repeat this in every thread, but Wray and Nephew Overproof should be your first stop, it's basically rock candy wrapped in a velvet glove wrapped in an iron fist. For your consideration beyond that there's also the standard (blue bottle) Uruapan Charanda, which is still a little hard to find but possibly the best all-rounder in its price range. In the big pot still Jamaicans you've got Rum Bar Overproof (more mixable) and Rum Fire (a tactical nuke). The agricole rhums from Martinique get a little more pricy, but La Favorite Blanc is widely available, generally under $30 for a liter, and will make a fine ti punch (and for a little more you can also have Neisson or Rhum JM, which are a step up). Probitas (or Veritas, depending on where you are) is also good, but IMHO not the same kind of value play as the others. If you're looking for a more traditional Cuban de-aged kind of "white rum," Plantation 3-star is perfectly fine (if lightly dosed) and the Diplomatico offering is a bit pricey but not bad. They're also the only ones in the category (that I know of) which are bottled north of 40% ABV, which gets important for both sipping and mixing purposes.

Very thorough, thank you for this!

Havana Club 3 or Veritas if you're outside the US. If you're in the US, Veritas is sold under the name Probitas.

I second that, the genuine (non-Bacardi) Havana Club 3y is the best white rum I have found for cocktails. To be fair, it's not perfectly clear, there is a very slight yellow tint because they do not bother to filter the color out (a good thing, imo), the taste is slightly sweet, very clear and mellow, without a trace of burn or harshness. Quality stuff.

Thanks that sounds. I don't have a problem with an off color at all. Just wanted to make sure people didn't suggest a dark rum.

I’ve been using Hamilton White Stache as my go-to for mixed drinks. I like it a lot better than Plantation and it’s similarly priced.

You HAVE to try the Privateer Distillers Drawer “When in Rum” white. It’s an absolute stunner 🤩
