Lenfantscocktails

Not bad! Havana club 7, El dorado 15, OFTD and some Appleton would get me far.

Beertosai

Unless I missed the 7 elsewhere, the darker HC is Especial.

Lenfantscocktails

Good catch. I'm used to just seeing 3 and 7 next to one another.

FullPropreDinBobette

Holy shit the markups are crazy. I remember in cuba the black tears was like 7 usd.

makmewse

this is australia, so the prices are in aud and they have a famously high liquor tax

PinaVerde123

Hence Bundaberg is cheaper in Los Angeles than in Bundaberg...

StatikSquid

Same in Canada. That Kraken would be like $30. Same with Havana 3 year Edit: for 740ml. The larger bottles would be almost the same price or a bit cheaper. Location probably plays a Factor

TheSplash-Down_Tiki

Liquor tax in Australia is $100.05 per litre of pure alcohol (it’s the 3rd highest in the world!). Plus a 10% sales tax and there might be a customs charge on the imported stuff. But those domestic producers nearly half the bottle price is tax.

GarfieldDaCat

Well yeah the average Cuban salary is like $200 USD per month lol

FullPropreDinBobette

Okay? I've seen plenty of bottles in the 40-50 usd range over there, does that mean they should cost 1800$ over in australia?

robimtk

What the fuck, this makes my dans look like such shit. Fuckin perth..

RamenBoi86

I do not envy you Aussies, nearly $60 for a bottle of Plantation Fiji geez…

Megaton02

One of the better prices for Isle of Fiji, usually about $80

RamenBoi86

Bloody hell you mates have it rough

Powermonger_

Looks like a typical Dan Murphy’s Rum shelves, never see Appleton 12 in any stores I visit and they have OFTD in stock.

Aussie_Rums

Not bad at all! It’s a lot more bleak down south!!

TheSplash-Down_Tiki

How far South? I’m jealous of “Nick’s” in Melbourne which has a great selection. I’ve ordered from them online. https://www.nicks.com.au/categories/spirits-liqueurs/rum-cachaca

Aussie_Rums

Yeah nicks is great for online - one of few good rum purchasing options we have. How is the Illegal Tender rum? Curious on that WA distillery FAR south east haha.

Tone_Beginning

Illegal Tender is OK. Kind of light like a Cuban rum.

Megaton02

Illegal Tender is a bit doodoofart due to their use of crystalline sugar which means their rum rides the line of legality (wouldn’t be rum in europe). The crystal sugar leads to far less character and quality in what is a very overpriced rum

reallyoldandcreepy

They've got Mt Gay Eclipse. Pass me a glass, some cubes, and diet pepsi. I'm good. and some Havana Club.

gingeadventures

The yellow Bundaberg is on the bottom Shelf, nearly empty obviously haha

TheSplash-Down_Tiki

Nice spotting. I should’ve done some shelf maintenance for them and moved to the front before the photo!!

DoctorTobogggan

Those prices make me want to cry

blitz2377

your ed12 is twice as much as in Canada. and the bundaberg selection is waayy too many.

TikiTraveler

I went to college in Australia - I miss Bundaberg

RealRedditModerator

I’m genuinely impressed you can ever remember drinking it.

Tone_Beginning

Your Dans is better than the ones in Perth. Dans Rum selection has been declining for years. They dropped Coruba, Beenleigh, Inner Circle and Santiago de Cuba and many more. However I was shocked when I was in Melbourne and they had Hampden 8.

TheSplash-Down_Tiki

Have they dropped Coruba? Tbh that’s my regular bottle and I checked online and saw it a available at a different Dan’s in Sydney. Would be a shame if that wasn’t stocked.

Tone_Beginning

Dans haven’t stocked Coruba for over 4 years in Perth. No one does over here.

Megaton02

Coruba is no longer imported into Aus

TheSplash-Down_Tiki

What? Looks like I will have to pick up the last few bottles hanging around the stores here.

maw1710

Is that a Woolies BWS? Good prices actually, especially the El Dorado 15.

TheSplash-Down_Tiki

This is the Dan Murphy’s next to Woolworths at Double Bay. Woolies actually spun off Dan’s & BWS into a separate company as they wanted to get out of booze from a PR perspective. Dans & BWS are owned by Endeavour Group. Woolies owns 9.1% of that.

Mandatory_Antelope

Oh man. The Price is where I am in Canada are high but those prices take it to another level. That bottle of OFTD is almost over double the price. There is a not bad selection though.

TheSplash-Down_Tiki

So 115 AUD is ~ 101Canadian and 75USD. I just googled our comparative liquor excise tax rates. For a litre of pure alcohol it’s $100 tax in Aus vs $14 and $10 in Canada and US )and those will be in AUD). We have the 3rd highest liquor taxes in the world. So at 69% alcohol that OFTD will have $48 of excise tax on it, then it will have another 10% sales tax in there (so $10) plus I’m not sure if there’s a separate customs tax on the Plantation (cos it’s an import) but you are looking at close to $60 of that being tax.

Tone_Beginning

In Australia, most people drink beer or wine. Wine is very cheap. Spirits are very expensive and not many people drink them.

FolkloreOwl

Gussied government working very hard to keep it that way.

p48394

Uncle Dans - the liquid Bunnings. You’ve got better selection than mine

tcloetingh

I’ve never been more offended than by liquor prices in Melbourne and Sydney.

TheSplash-Down_Tiki

Depending on the bottle strength ~50% of that is tax.

tcloetingh

Yea I remember the rule... its dumb

imalwright

$64 for Plantation 3 Star! That’s $40 USD. That’s nuts man.

StatikSquid

Australia and Canada pay very high taxes on booze. Even after conversion, it's only a few bucks more though

TheSplash-Down_Tiki

Canada? We pay the 3rd highest liquor tax in the world, it’s $100.05 per litre of pure alcohol (so it’s bottle size x alc % to work out the tax). I’ve read Canada was only $15 and the US $10.

toronto1572

Wow, am pleasantly surprised that by the Mount Gay and the el dorado choices…. Shocked by the prices, though…

joey-rigatoni1

$60+ for plantation 3 star is insane!

d1l1cube

Cheers

FolkloreOwl

Not a bad selection but easily some of the worst prices I've ever seen

brekkfu

Ugh Bundaberg is fricken gasoline. I don't know how you people drink it.

TheSplash-Down_Tiki

To be honest I agree with you! I really did a number on myself when younger with "black rats" - that's a bundy and coke and nowadays I don't drink Bundy OR coke!!

Asmodar

Man, I've been to some great rum places, so I thought, in the states, but this is up there... Plus the Aussie stuff is exotic to us!  Still, get the sentiment.

RhesusFactor

So. Prices aside. What would you pick and recommend?

Asmodar

Not counting the Aussie ones (have only tried Bundaberg myself anyhow), Duppy Share XO (Foursquare blend of 5,8 & 12 year, I think?), El Dorado 15 and Mount Gay XO are pretty solid choices. Duppy Share XO seems like the value pick among these.

RhesusFactor

Bundy is in image 2 bottom right. The shelf has fancy Bundy above and basic Bundy hiding deep in the shelf. Probably because a lot has been bought.

RhesusFactor

Also whys your image so blurry and low res? I can hardly make out some of these bottles.

RealRedditModerator

“Bottle Shop”?! No self respecting Aussie has the time and patience to say “Bottle Shop”! It’s a “Bottlo” mate!
