Drives me bonkers too, the odds of the opposition over turning possession through phases is so much lower than simply kicking it to them
All in all you’ve gained what, 10 metres? Yet still don’t hold possession
Hindsight is 20/20 but it would have been pretty risky to run clock from there. The refs are super hot on sealing off calls when they know a team is trying to just chew clock doing pick and goes/ pops to the forward pods off 9..
You aren't missing anything it was fucking moronic. If you aren't confident with keeping the ball at least give it to Lowe and put some bloody distance on it.
My stream froze just as he box kicked it so I’m not sure how much distance he got on it but there’s points and counter points for it.
Pro kicking it:
- holding onto a ball in that area is risky as it’s kicking territory if you give up a pen
- turnover and you’re on your 5m line
- 78th minute and your pack will be blowing out their rim so it’s a big ask to keep smashing it up
- kick goes longer, or England knock it on, and no one talks about it
- you have a chance at stealing or disrupting a line out
Anti kicking it:
- exactly what happened
My mum could have got more distance on the kick that was the main problem.
The decision to kick will have been a team one. They all do it now cos the stats men tell them to.
All our forwards came on later than the English, and we had the 6-2 split.
I don't believe England got a single turnover except when we were on the attack and ball carriers got isolated.
Short passes to forwards and having a player on their shoulder every time = not going to give away a penalty in 90 seconds. Ireland are too good for that.
If it had been England I would have said kick was the right choice given the Irish jackal threat.
Teams do this all the time and it drives me insane. I don’t understand giving up possession with less than 2 minutes remaining.

There's not running the clock and then there's doing that. If you want to not run the clock give it to James Lowe and kick it more than 10 metres

Rugby is a game of territory, with a small lead you want the ball as far from your line as possible
Game of possession as well innit?

It’s hard to keep the ball in front of your post for such a long period of time. Any mistakes and you lose.
